Was my hair in desperation or what. I allowed my hair to grow since last visiting in January and the color was pretty but very long overdue for a cut and refresh. I wanted to go darker, shorter and mature. Jessica has always been my girl and she did an amazing job getting me to where I wanted. I would definitely say we cut at least 6 inches off. It did take a while (8 hours to be exact), but if that's what it takes to get my hair looking amazing then so be it. They have plenty of snacks and drinks available or you can always order food for delivery. Went yesterday and it was super quiet. So I highly recommend going on a week day if you can so it's not as packed. The salon is very clean and inviting. Everyone who works here is very sweet. I have to give it to Jenn; there's a difference when you operate a business with passion. After decades of not processing my hair I decided to go for something fun now that I have grays coming in. I was extremely indecisive, going in twice for both a colored extension consultation and a highlights+vivids color process consultation on my own hair. While I had Andrea for my stylist, Jenn is involved in the process and Jenn was able to break down the pros and cons in a clear manner for me to make a decision without regrets. Both were very patient. She is also able to offer nuanced advice that comes with doing specialty hair color that I don't think more main stream salons can offer. The location is tucked into a low-key shopping center on the pike with a cute Japanese grocery store and Taiwanese bubble tea place if you need refreshments while getting your hair done. The atmosphere is upbeat. Pricing is reasonable. Clientele and team while I was there are mostly under 40. I've gone to Jenn Shin studios for almost 3 years now, so it's about time I wrote a review. 3 KEY THINGS TO KNOW (for any hair salon): 1. COMMUNICATE: talk to your stylist. Be honest and speak up (nicely). They're a human being, not robots. 2. MANAGE EXPECTATIONS: sometimes your current hair can't handle what you want (depending on box dye, past care, past treatments), unless you want more damage 3. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR/TIME IT TAKES: I learned this the hard way. You not getting that hair you saw on IG for $200 (it isn't 2001 anymore). Honor your stylist's skills and time and pay up! She gives personalized recommendations based on my lifestyle, job, and hair condition. Customer service is top notch. I'm really big on that kind of thing. Studio is really cute, clean, and Instagrammable. Jenn puts in WORK for sure. My very black hair takes many hours to lighten, and I've had 9 hour foliyage appointments. Throughout the process, the staff constantly check in to make sure I'm comfortable. The salon and staff are so pleasant though that it feels like a social visit with friends. They talk TO me, and not just over me. I've had the most contact with Jenn, Eric, and Christy personally! Eric's head massages are 10/10. Jenn, Eric, and Christy stayed to 8pm to finish styling my hair, even when they all must've been exhausted. They happily encouraged me to have that final curl (if it was what I wanted!). Plenty of parking in the back... easy access to the salon. If you park in the front I think you'll have to walk to the back so park in the back :) There are two doors and you can enter through any door. In the middle is the front desk and you can check in there. Super friendly and great service. My sister had an appointment at 2 and we got there a little earlier cus I don't like being late even though I'm late most of the time. Anyway, she was ready for my sister a little after 2. I like that she's punctual because some places have you wait another 15-30 mins to be actually in a chair and be seen. I'm writing this review and it's 2:11 and my sister was talking to her and in a chair before :) I definitely want to get my hair done by her when in md and when I have time and money lol. I saw how she did a lot of different color corrections and I know I'm going to need that because I got my hair done in nyc and my hair is so bad right now.. I thought they'd be better in nyc but that's not true. I see some many asian girls with such bad color jobs :( and the same happened to me and I need it fixed but I also know it'll take almost the whole day. So if you need to get your hair fixed I'd get it done here cus I've seen lots of good hair corrections done by Jenn. I like that Jenn really took her time with cutting my sisters hair and told her what she thought. She took time to get to know her hair to see what would be best for her. I love that she also gives her opinion when asked because I personally never know what to do or know what would look good and she has more experience so she can really help. In the end, if I don't like it, it's on me since I asked her and she just tried to do what she thought was best. When she cut my sisters hair short I was kind of worried but after seeing the end product I was sooooooo obsessed with my sisters hair. She is so talented. It ended up being more work for my sister cus she needs to straighten and curl her hair depending but she knew she'd be doing that and it looks so good. Before meeting Jenn, I wasn't super high maintenance with my hair. I never had a "favorite" or "go-to" stylist. Quite frankly, I would just book with any studios that had a stylist available day of once or twice a year for a "basic trim" and ashamed to admit it, I profusely colored my hair with box-dye (ah, that college budget). My visit with Jenn was prompted from a horrible 2016 balayage job from another very popular stylist in the Tysons Corner region. This was during the time when everyone was trying to achieve that gray/silver look - which I also wanted (without understanding the difficulty of color correction and the fact that silver/gray lasts for about one wash). Anyways, the stylist I booked with didn't ask much of my previous haircare or discuss realistic looks. When she was done with my hair, it was NOT silver. In fact, she kept trying to correct it before giving up (because she had another incoming client), leaving my hair with splotches of purple and green...I am very hesitant to voice my opinion regarding my hair so I just told her thanks and left the salon crying. That night, I actually got my friend to help box dye my hair back to black because the job was completely botched. I grew out my hair for about 6 months and in the meantime, also booked an appointment with Jenn. I still remember my very first appointment with Jenn. She asked me about my previous dye jobs, discussed realistically what she might be able to achieve and told me that I may not get what I wanted that day but we could work towards it. It was the first time ever that a stylist sat down and discussed my hair so thoroughly. When I left her chair several hours later that day, it was damn near close to silver/gray (for my poor hair care over the years anyways...). The grow out from all the different bleach jobs/dye over the months following was also perfection. That botched balayage job kind of traumatized me (kidding), and one of the main reasons I have stuck with Jenn since. When you have someone this great with hair, you just don't stray (and the one time I did try to stray to another stylist after I had met Jenn, they messed up my hair as well...and Jenn had to correct it lol...never again). I have consistently driven an hour every time to see Jenn to get my hair done. Over the years I have seen Jenn grow so much as a stylist and business owner. She is so caring and real towards her clients and if you come in with an open-mind, you will not only leave with great hair, but you will also leave SO educated about hair every time. From my observations, Jenn is also extremely supportive of the stylists that work at her studio (which I find very endearing). Everyone at Jenn Shin Studios is so sweet and welcoming (no judgmental vibes here at all), and, they're ALL amazing at curling hair. Although I exclusively go to Jenn, everyone in the studio has assisted with my hair at some point and I would vouch for any of them to cut or color your hair as I've gotten the privilege to see a lot of their beautiful completed looks throughout the years. My little sister is going through her funky hair phase and goes to Eriq to get it colored, and loves the results he does for her EVERY. TIME. Jenn has worked so hard over the years to achieve the looks I wanted, everything from platinum blonde, overall pink, purple ombre, silver, etc. to more subtle looks, such as nice framing babylights. She has taught me so much about hair and I can confidently tell you, when it comes to coloring hair, THIS is who you want. People do frequently ask who I get my hair done with, and I always enthusiastically recommend Jenn, but I also tell them to come in with realistic expectations and look at her pricing online. I would hate to send her someone that would leave a nasty review not understanding the hard work Jenn has done over the years to acquire the level of skills she currently has today (I'm looking at you, all you one/two star reviewers). At this point, I wholeheartedly trust Jenn, so whatever she recommends sometimes, I go with and it has never failed me. If you want great hair, definitely go to Jenn. If you want to color your hair but on a groupon $100 budget, please go somewhere else. Trust me, I GET IT, I used to never have a designated hairstylist and would try to get the cheapest hair coloring/cut service possible. But, you really do pay for what you get, and if you want your hair to look good even after you leave the salon chair, then go to Jenn. Also, if you don't want to respect a hairstylist's time and cancellation fees, then also go elsewhere. I have seen all the stylists here stay late into the night just to ensure a client leaves happy with their hair. I've been to many different stylists and hair salons in the Montgomery County area, but Jenn Shin Studios is definitely here to stay! Jenn Shin has been in the industry for many years, and has been great to see how she has progressed as a stylist, continuing her trade, opening, and expanding her own business as well! All the staff at Jenn Shin Studios are extremely knowledgeable and talented. My first time at Jenn Shin Studios, I had gone to Daisy and wanted to transition from a bleach out to foilayage for lower maintenance, since my previous stylist had moved away. For those who may have sensitive scalp, would highly recommend foilayage since the lightener is not applied close to the roots, but still able to have the bright look depending on how much dimension you would like! I was very satisfied with the Foilayage that Daisy had done (was in around 9-10am and out maybe around 4-5 PM, so definitely recommend setting aside a whole day, don't rush the process!). She had recommended toning the color a bit darker/deeper, so there was more color retention and a better fade than if I had gone a lighter purple color. I've had Foilayage done two other times with Cara, who is no longer at the salon but had taken very good care of me and my hair as well! She was able to get my hair light/bright and was also able to cut/style in the way that I had liked. I asked for longer wispier curtain bangs, and she was able to deliver! She had also educated myself on how to get more volume in hair by blow drying, and how to style the bangs as well with a curling iron. The salon carries a line called Maria Nila which I really like, after taking recommendations from Cara. She used the conditioners/masks and I was definitely sold and bought a bottle of shampoo and a mask. I would highly recommend pre booking your next service, because this salon is BUSY, and for a good reason! I am currently in the process of wedding planning, and definitely going to go to Jenn Shin studios for the picture perfect hair color for that special day. read more

I found this salon after doing a ton of research, and the reviews were overwhelmingly positive. I usually drive back to my hair stylist in North Carolina, but I was in desperate need of a haircut...well, I should've driven back to NC. I showed the stylist a VERY simple inspiration picture. The hairstylist started off by doing a "rough cut." NEVER in my life has a hairstylist cut my hair in two shaggy layers. And yes - I mentioned layers, but I truly do not know what this stylist was thinking. The stylist proceeded to ask me 500 questions about the haircut - I'm not a hairstylist?? How should I know? I had to ask her to blend my hair more at the end because it was just so choppy. I told myself that I'd just style it until things got better, but my hair was just SO thin. I had even expressed worries about thinning hair?!?! 1.5 months after my haircut at Jenn shin salon, I traveled back to North Carolina for my hairstylist and she noticed that 1) the front was completely uneven; 2) the layers were extremely drastic - my front bangs have inches of difference between the rest of my face framing hair; and 3) my hair was uneven by an INCH in the back. Jenn Shin Studios is located off of Fishers Lane inside of Symmetry Salon. There is street parking available as well as a garage, both require payment. Jenn and her team (Cara and Daisy) are the best, I have had my hair done by each of them and I have always gotten exactly what I asked for :) I have done silver hair, which by the way, takes a LONG time to process (hours and hours and hoursssss) so I suggest you do a consultation to see if your hair can handle the processing. Jenn, Cara and Daisy actually care about the health of your hair. They do not to over process and destroy your hair just to get a cool picture and send you on your way like some of these other salons in the area. Along with my silver hair, I also got extensions with them and recently gone with dark black hair with extensions. I have also had my hair braided by Daisy. They really do it all here! Whenever Daisy styles my hair, whether curls, braids, etc. I can neverrr replicate, she just makes my hair look so good! ;) If you are looking for a friendly hair salon with the best music playlist (love the throwback tracks mixed in with current radio hits!) then this is the salon for you. I had seen the same stylist for over 2 decades after an unfortunate "Friends" haircut turned into a mullet during my first semester in college while working at a certain retail store that mostly hired based on looks and, at that time, did not allow for makeup to be worn my female brand representatives. After I found him, I never looked elsewhere and maintained my loyalty through almost 2 decades of military life that included moves all up and down the East Coast. Unfortunately, while my former stylist gives AMAZING haircuts and does a great color, his attention (& availability) was starting to drift to other projects, so Mama needed to search for someone new. This was super difficult because I do love my former hair stylist and he is super amazing (I'm talking I could go 6-9 months between sessions and my hair would still look amazing). Fast forward to 2019, I decide to take the plunge and try someone new. I have been stalking (oops "researching") Jenn since her old days before she ventured out on her own. I followed her story as well as others knowing that one day, I might need to find someone new. Keeping in mind my trust of my hair with others after my unfortunate mullet in college, I wanted to make sure I chose the right person...and I did. I first went to Jenn's first location before she opened up her beautiful current location. Eric was lending a hand that day and both made me feel super comfortable. Eric is now on his own (at JSS) and doing some amazing work too!! Jenn is super sweet, not cocky, and definitely talented. I usually come in and tell her to do whatever which I'm sure isn't the most helpful, but I love seeing what she envisions and the end product has always been awesome. 2020: Jenn has been super careful about following all the COVID regulations and making sure her staff and clients are safe. I have seen her put others ahead of herself and this year has been no exception. The pandemic happened RIGHT after she opened her new salon and I didn't see her complain about "poor me" but always was "stay safe and let's get through this together". I don't know why it's taken me so long to write a proper review, but I've been going to get my hair done by Jenn for a couple years now. I've gone from a subtle balayage to global blonding to full highlights/babylights and let me tell you I have loved the results every single time! Service: Jenn (and her whole team) are always super friendly and able to answer any questions I may have. Bleaching hair can be a very time consuming process and I've had a couple 7-8 hour sessions that have run on past closing hours, but Jenn and her team (shoutout to Christie :^)) always stay late without complaint and make sure my hair is finished and styled the way I like. Jenn strives to maintain the integrity of your hair and will be honest as to whether a process is right for you. Price: This salon is definitely on the "premium" end compared to other places that may have cheaper prices, but I believe you are definitely paying for the best quality, results, and the amount of time and effort the stylists put in. Jenn's work has been consistently wonderful and my hair never feels damaged afterwards (of course you should probably also invest in some after care to take care of ya mane). If budget is a concern, definitely check out their website which has specific pricing listed by stylist before booking. I'm usually pretty cautious when looking for new hairstylists and worry about whether they know how to handle Asian hair, but Jenn has been consistent with amazing results throughout the years so she will definitely continue to be my go to! It's been 5+ years since I've been seeing Jenn and I believe that calls for an updated Yelp review: I started seeing Jenn when she was still an assistant at her previous salon. The master stylist she worked for had bleached me twice and after a couple of months I was in dire need of a cut (to get rid of my gummy bleached hair) and a darker toner. Her boss, my stylist, was busy that day so I was lucky to have sat on Jenn's chair. She made me a beautiful brunette again in addition to giving me an amazing cut. Fast forward 5ish years, I've continued to exclusively see Jenn for all of my hair needs and I will never, hold on, let me repeat myself for the people in the back, NEVER see anyone again. I have been there through the evolution of what is now Jenn Shin Studio, willing to pay whatever price increase is established by her, because her work is worth every single penny. People tell me "oh my gosh, your hair looks amazing... but how much did you pay for it? Omg I paid like $250 for mine". Babes, if you want groceries and you only have an Aldi budget, then by all means shop at Aldis. I'm sure it's great. Want a new shirt but can only afford target? Love it, I'm sure they have got something great for you... I on the other hand, want the best, and I will pay for the best. I have never left Jenn's chair unsatisfied and I know that if my smile isn't big enough when I get up to leave, she will make sure that I'm happy with every strand of my hair before I walk out the door. Considering the uneven hair after the toner washed out, I obviously cannot recommend this to anyone at this premium price. It's one thing to end up with unsatisfactory hair, but the fact that after I reached out to express my concern, Jenn texts me saying that I am directly insulting her. Avoid this place if you are expecting any follow-up support for your hair because if you reach out stating that you've gotten better results at other salons (even if true), you'll be met by some accusatory language. Hands down, the best experience I received for my first professional color hair appt. I wanted to go from virgin dark brown (with residual box dye) to a bright blonde. And I'm so happy with the results First off the staff is super knowledgable and sweet-- All of them. I asked Daisy to go as light as possible with low maintenance and a nice grow out. She was very patient and took her time to hear what I wanted and gave me the best results to what I was looking for. She also explained her knowledge on what color would look best with my complexion as well as mentioning how box dye can impact the process. The whole process took about 8-9 hours but Daisy, Cristy and the staff were all very friendly and made sure I was ok and making me feel pretty. And S/O Jenn and staff for keeping the place COVID friendly with necessary distancing! The staff were diligent to keep clients 6 feet apart and disinfecting everything down. HANDS DOWN THE BEST HAIR SALON EVER! Truth be told, I've had TERRIBLE hair experiences at other places and was never a loyal customer UNTIL JENN!! I was a bit concerned going in due to past PTSD hair salon experiences, but I was referred to Jenn by a friend, so I trusted the process. And right from when I entered the door I was greeted with their friendly staff and the studio is bright and clean. Jenn was so tentative of my hair and the look I wanted to achieve. She analyzed my hair and asked lots of questions about my past treatments so that she could accurately diagnose the best treatment options without damaging my hair. I've been consistently going to Jenn to color my hair every 8-10 weeks, with the occasional toner in between, for the last year and a half. Jenn and her team (Cara, Daisy, Eriq) are the BEST! Jenn's gonna straight up tell you what is and what might not be possible-- she keeps it real because she has YOUR best interests in mind. I usually show up and go "lol idk what I want" (sorry, I'm the worst) and Jenn offers helpful suggestions on what's possible/what would look good/what it would fade to. I've LOVED every color and have continuously pushed the limits of what's considered acceptable in the office haha. Also, somehow the assistants have perfected the art of the beachy wave and I'm actually obsessed with it. Book early! There's a reason she's booked so far out; she's just that good. Price wise, you get what you pay for. I sleep soundly at night knowing that my hair is hella dope and that it's not gonna fall out.
