This is a dive bar. So it gets 5 stars because I love spending time here and the bartenders are great. But if you're expecting trendy, fancy cocktail program, etc., that's not what you get here. You get a top notch dive bar experience. You CANNOT beat the location, right on the sand. People playing volleyball right in front of you. Lots of dogs outside. Boats going in and out of the harbor. Love this place! #1 location right on the beach! Hollywood Beach just north of the channel that the boats go in and out of from the Channel Islands harbor dividing the Strand and Hollywood Beach. The bar inside definitely tells MANY stories with its rich history from its early years til now-coming up in their 60 yr anniversary! It is a spot that draws all types of people! The bartenders are super cool and are heavy on the pours w/the drinks priced just right! They celebrate St. Patty's Day, host Volleyball Tournaments 4th of July, Labor Day etc... a really cool place! They have a nice patio that you access from the beach to enter the bar...but the best part is their set up on the beach! Lots of picnic tables, plenty of Adirondack chairs on the sand and a couple volleyball courts that are almost always going! Great place to mingle, we always meet new people-lots of locals and many out of towers find their way there too! We also always bring our dog because there's plenty of pup socializing going on as well! They provide a large community water bowl for them which is nice. Definitely must check it out!! Great dive bar nestled in Oxnard right smack dab in the middle of the beach! Where else can you enjoy drinks right on the sand :) drinks are super affordable as well. Just remember this is a cash only bar so definitely hit the ATM machine before coming and you'll be golden! They also have two large pool tables and a jukebox. So fun ! read more

Excellent Dive/Beachy/Toes in the sand kind of bar. They just celebrated their 60th anniversary in September. Great local spot filled w regulars and people in the know. Not sure if this is new, but I stopped by today with the impression that this place was dog friendly. But there is a sign on the front door that says no animals allowed inside or in the patio. I took my business and my furry pal elsewhere. read more

The Rudder Room is a priceless community watering hole with cheap drinks & a million dollar beach front view. If you have the chance to stop in you will meet the welcoming Oxnard locals & be sure to ask the bartenders about the rich history of the bar. Almost hate to do this for fear of more people but y'all got to check this one out. Best dive bar in area. Full of locals and vacationers alike. Bartenders are fun as hell and can't beat the location. $5 beers. Kinda of high for my brain but cheaper than most left coast places. I heard people saying drinks also good. Just a FYI it's cash only but they do have a a ATM. And for the person crying in their white claw they don't let pets. I think your making it up or you where just a problem customer and they chose not to serve you. Couple good looking dogs brought their humans out for a cold one. Any way. This is a dive bar worth visiting. I'm not sure how they keep their drink prices as low as they do. The place is very old. The drinks are strong and cheap. Walk out the back and sit at a table or Adirondack chairs on the beach. It's an awesome location and fantastic service. Recommend over and over. read more

This is not hyperbole: I have had drinks at 100s (if not thousands) of bars in my life, and this place is without a doubt, my favorite. Again, I am not exaggerating. I've told people on 7 continents about this place, and I'm sure many have come just to see what all of the "hype" is about. Sitting in an Adirondack chair, with my feet in the sand, volleyball played in front of me, dogs chasing balls, and beers all around me...what more could I possibly ask for. I had a blast here last night. The bartenders make great drinks at great prices. It's a dive but still a big place with cool vibes and a lot of eye candy. A mix of young and older patrons. There's a Jukebox and games as well. The place is really fun and worth the 1 hour drive. I will be returning soon! read more

As far as the dive bars go, this is obviously one of the best. Perfectly located with outdoor seating. You can't really beat that. The drinks are great, patrons are friendly and the vibe is just totally chill. I'm sure most of the patrons are locals. It took me forever to finally come here. This is surprising because I've lived in Oxnard for most of my life. I've talked about coming here for ages, but never made it because I always ended up at Sea Fresh down the street. Total dive bar but worth a visit. The inside of the bar is relatively dark, however, they have seating outside on a patio type area as well as tables and chairs out on the beach, so it is a really good place to go to during the early evening time for the sunset. Drinks are a great pour and prices are cheap with some friendly bartenders who know what they are doing. The place has been around for quite some time, with mostly regulars but also people visiting the area coming by, so clearly they are doing something right. I will certainly return next time I am in the Oxnard/Hollywood Beach area. read more

Awesome bartender shout out to Rory The place was alittle small inside but out back you can sit and watch the sun or watch people playing volleyball and sip on a drink. Once the sun went down we decided to go back inside and chill. This was are first time here so some of the locals didn't make us feel comfortable butttt the bartender surely did great personality and good sense of humor. I have to admit the drinks were a bit pricey for that place and it was cash only but we was prepared We bought a couple of tee shirts for the keepsake and ended up closing the bar and getting a room at the holiday express inn for the next two nights, that was not expected or in are plans, So over all we had a great time to say the least. We will go back again someday read more

You would have to live on the seat to understand. I revisited the Room after being away 40 years. Three gentleman were sitting at the bar as I commented you guys are in the exact same stools 40 years ago. Once they digested what I had just said they were all about stories. Fun to see the old place. Living on the Lisa Lynn and using her as my commercial dive boat on my return to the harbor birth I would shine my brite spotlight in the windows of the Rudder Room. That was to single I have returned and for someone to come down to M dock and pick me up. I slept many a night on a blanket on the sand out back. Woke up to seagulls standing next to me wonder what I was doing. Great memories there. read more

The best part about the Rudder Room was having a corona out on the wooden benches behind the bar watching the sunset and waves :) It was really relaxing and felt like a dream. The not-so-best part about the Rudder Room was upon entering the bar, EVERYONE stared at us (2 girls and 1 guy all in our early 20's). It's definitely a local's spot since the bartender told us that everyone that comes here know what they want and we didn't know what to order lol I also thought they had happy hour deals but I guess not :( They do get points for having pool tables and the dive bar atmosphere where it's not a place to get dressed up for but just bring your casual self, friends and only cash :) read more

This is my favorite bar on this, or any other planet. Years ago I attended a dog wedding here,really. I never tire of the stiff drinks and soft prices. I almost hate to rave about it because I don't want it to get too crowded. Fabulous in the afternoon to sit on the sand in an Anorodac chair with your best friend, Spike. After dark, its a little more dicey, but the kind of place you will never be the worst nor best dressed (usually). They still make Bloody's and Maggie's the old fashion way, by hand with a dash of sarcasm. It never gets old. read more

We were told to expect a 20 minute wait for our food, but it took 40 minutes to get our food and our meal was cold!?! The sauerkraut in my pastrami still had the chill from the refrigerator. The fries were undercooked and the famous loaded fries were barely above room temperature. The tuna melt had tuna but no melt. The kitchen was overwhelmed by online orders as they were turning away walk-in customers who being told it would be an hour before they'd get their food. Management needs to better balance takeout volume with the experience of guests sitting in the restaurant. When you're cranking out food that's not representing you well, it's time to step back and rethink what you're doing.
