Cool little museum definitely worth an hour or so on a hot summer day! We dropped by Ruddy's 1930s General Store Museum well exploring downtown Palm Springs during the recent Yelp PS getaway event. I am old enough to recognize a lot of the items in here, including some that are still in production. The interesting thing to me is that nothing was plastic. of course, that's because plastic was not invented and in common use in the 1930s. I highly recommend this quaint establishment for a trip down memory lane. the lovely air conditioning alone was worth the dollar price of admission!

Very cool for anyone interested in history! This is a magnificent collection of goods. There are many old medicinal remedies still in the original glass with such well preserved labels! It's really impressive. They have pickles that are 80 years old! From mascara to greeting cards, clothing to medicine this little museum has so much inside. It's definitely worth checking out!! The woman at the door was really sweet & had great information to offer us. Make sure to check days/hours of operation.

I heard about this general store museum from a friend and the fact they have items from 1800 in their original packaging. I tried to visit it, but it's closed the day we were there.

Rudy's was closed when we stumbled upon it "Thank you Covid-19!" but we peeked through the windows and what a historical little treasure! Beautifully curated as well, very cool.

Such an outstanding collection of made in Amerca items. From housewares, to food items (still in unopened packages), drugs and makeup, cleaning supplies, pipes & tobacco, beverages, candy, greeting cards, hats, clothing, and so much more! Admission is 95 cents for adults. Such a bargain! The building was built to house this collection. It never had been a store. All of the items are for display; none are for sale. A docent told us about the collection and history of its assemblage. She was very friendly and knowledgeable. My brother got the kids involved in an I Spy kind of challenge -- to find items that are still being made today. That made it more engaging for them and helped focus in on the massive quantity of stuff down to a more narrow sampling. The museum sits back from Palm Canyon Drive in a huddle with other mini-museums, which is actually a great idea. There was no air conditioning on a warm afternoon, which would also reflect the reality of what it would have been like back in the days before A/C. This is a fun way to see how our ancestors might have shopped in their time. Great treasure!

Awesome time capsule of 1930s (and earlier) general store stuff. Ask the lady and she can show you some items up close.

We had a truly memorable time looking through Ruddy's General Store Museum. It was fun and educational to see the goods that people used in their daily lives in the 1930s. Many of the brands of items are still on store shelves today. When we entered the store, we were greeted by Sally who told us about the history of the store, and answered any questions that we had about the over 6000 items. We were even able to share the visual experience live with my mother and father (who live in Montana) using Facebook Messenger! It was a great "trip down memory lane" for them, and brought all of us great pleasure. It is a day that we will remember for a long time. Thank you Mr. Ruddy for putting together the excellent collection, and Sally for welcoming us, and sharing with us.

Stumbled upon this hidden gem while exploring downtown. Fascinating to see this extensive collection of 100+ year old antique items in pristine condition! All items were original, dating back to the Great Depression and World War II--everything from pharmacy, grocery to clothing and toys. This collection is a must-see in Downtown Palm Springs! Well worth the small donation to support this small establishment. Come and help keep this piece of American History open!!

A total gem! We came to Palm Springs for our honeymoon & when doing some research into local museums this one stood out as a must see. A $1 to enter and step back into the 1920s is well worth every penny. The collector who established this collection and museum has kept it in amazing condition. There is a lovely woman (whose name escapes me) who was so knowledgeable and sweet. If you're in Palm Springs and are into vintage items it's a must see.

So many antique memorabilia to see & appreciate!

First off, I love the concept of free admission on Thursday. That sure brought people in to see what this place has to offer. We got tickets for the free admission night. It's great way to enjoy the place and then you can go to the village fest market right afterwards. There's parking in the covered parking structure across the street but there's a couple of parking lots all nearby. The entrance has a beautiful sculpture in front with the mountain as a backdrop. It was really busy last night with the free ticket and the heatwave. People wanted to be inside. I was surprised to see how big it was inside. Main part is three story with art and sculpture on all three lever. Each room showcase some beautiful artwork by artists from everywhere. Some unique pieces, amazing and beautiful sculpture, light fixtures and pieces that you wonder how they came up with that. I don't know how often pieces get replaced but I think some are permanently home here. Top floor was my favorite as it had some amazing sculptures and a nice collection of Andy Warhol pieces. Also they had a little game going on for kids when they checked in. I think anyone could have played but it was like a scavenger bingo hunt. Nice to have kids interacting with art. All the staff were very friendly and sweet. If you had any questions, they were there for you. Of course there's a gift shop inside. From the outside we noticed that they had a little eating area in the lower lever. I think it could be a cafe with the tables set up around a nice pool feature. The museum is beautiful and great for an afternoon out. Do try to take advantage when it's free admission on Thursday so you can check it out.

We hope this is a work in progress…read more The price is very low, and the guy at the desk very nice... but this could be so much more interesting. Given the effort that the producers of Modernism Week go to for education and the availability of really important mid- century furnishings, it comes up short. We felt it was really more of a selfie- station than a museum. There are several rooms featuring furnishings from the 50's through the 70's... and it was clear that someone had fun curating the looks. But we were in and out in about 20 minutes. There is a brief sign in each room giving a brief statement (mushroom wallpaper was popular, etc). Shops around town are brimming with these furnishings. There is a large room in the back sadly branded as a roller rink (we assume it is for party rentals), that could easily have housed collections of important furniture or displays about architecture and the key players in design. We have seen similar- sized spaces that used video, displays and models to educate. A few items from Magda Gabor's house (lighting fixtures and patio furniture) were of limited interest, and not at all associated with the modernist movement. Just over- the -top sconces. Given the prestige of Modernism Week and the quality of the vendors and lectures... it is misleading to name this a museum. It was worth ten bucks and 20-30 minutes, and maybe more in the future. But only if you have time to kill,

There was a 1969 Jaguar in a Racquet Club room display; a tiki bar that might have been in someone's backyard; a re-recreation of Jayne Mansfield's pink room (including a heart shaped tub); an over the top kitchen with dining table; wallpaper designed by Peter Max; and a beauty salon with a hair dryer that William Randolph Hearst's mistress Marion Davies sat under. If there had been more rooms like the ones described above with more information about the rooms (ie. more about the designers and the cultural roles they played; what inspired them, etc.), then the museum would be a home run in my book. But there were only a few rooms like that. The very friendly gentleman who greeted us in front of the museum said that the museum was 10,000 square feet in size and he was right but I'm guessing about 40% of it was a big, mainly empty event space with a mirrored disco ball and psychedelic floor painting and not much else. Plenty of room for additional displays that was nearly empty. If there are more exhibits then this place would definitely earn 5 stars, especially as you're allowed to sit on the furniture. For now, though, with all the empty space (we took only 30 minutes to visit, if that) and only a few "wow" rooms, just three stars.
