For a unique pizza experience in Lawrence, this is the place. Honestly, I can't believe how long it's taken for me to put a review together for Rudy's. I've been having Rudy's Pizza since they were located in the Crossing more than 30 years ago, and I've been hooked on their sauce ever since. Whether you're just stopping in for a slice or you want a pie to go, Rudy's has lots of choices and plenty of great deals. Pro tip: some of the slices that may have been there a little longer than others go down to the dollar/value slice rack, or the lowest rack in the rotating warmer. Same great pizza for a friendly price! Rudy's has menu specials, calzones, or make your own pizza with a range of toppings and crusts. I'm a sucker for their whole wheat crust, but that might not suit those a gluten-free palate. The sauce is my thing, not too sweet and not too tangy and it melds just right with their cheese blend. Pizzas come out hot and ready and prices are right on par with other spots in LFK. If you're dining in, then know that seating can be a touch limited but your pie will come out and sit on a rack ready for serving. Plus you can listen to the soothing trickle of the goldfish pond while you wait.its a chill atmosphere in a unique sub-street space. It is Lawrence, so be mindful of your parking or you'll find yourself adding to the city coffers. Rudy's does deliver, so you can still get that great pizza brought right to you if you aren't fetching it. A local pizza shop that has all the aspects of a college town staple. Helpful and excellent customer service! Everything tastes like it came from your parents kitchen, very homey but nothing too impressive. If you like the thiner crust style this is how most of their pizzas are! Service was the best part of our lunch experience today. The pizza had an overly sweet sauce and looked as though it was microwaved. The side salad looked day-old but edible with a few haphazard croutons and onion slices tossed on. My husband and I were looking for a good local pizza spot and we found it. This is a little hidden gem, off the road and downstairs to this interesting secretive /vintage restaurant. You go to the rear to place your order at the counter, we first noticed the Everyday Special $7.99 for a gigantic piece of pizza, drink and side salad. Now that is no joke and looked delicious. They have daily specials and happy hour specials. Since it was our first time in we wanted to eat pizza there and take pizza home, so we ordered a large Rudy, ghost pepper breadsticks, salads and drinks. The price was fantastic. Ordered delivery pizza and wings and couldn't have been happier! You have a choice of white or wheat crust, multiple sauce options, and plenty of toppings to choose from including vegetarian meats. The crust is tasty on its own, which is importantly to note. Combined with their classic sauce and cheeses, and you could eat that all day! Hands down my favorite pizza on earth since my years at KU 15 years ago.. I still go out of my way whenever I go to KC. Thick sauce that is perfect blend of sweet and spicy (pro tip get a side of sauce to dip in), unique cheese blend, quality ingredients throughout, and never greasy. Awesome half basement location on Mass. My only complaint is that they've ruined all other pizza joints for me, I'm legit upset every time I remember that I live 500 miles away now. Calzones are great too, I used to only get those before I tried the pizza. Idk if still the case but they used to do free delivery. I really love pizza but this is one of very few places that managed to royally screwed it up. I saw another review that mentioned it seemed like it was microwaved and that's the best way I can describe it. Stopped by Rudy's Pizza recently, and I'm really glad I did. It's a cozy, no-frills kind of place with a lot of heart--owned by a friend, which makes it even better supporting someone local. I tried their custom creation, the Pocket Za--Rudy's own spin on a calzone--and it was seriously delicious. The crust had that perfect golden finish, slightly crispy on the outside, soft and cheesy on the inside. Mine was loaded with pepperoni, and the flavors were spot-on. A neat little pizza place on Mass St that you have to go underground below street level to their main area, which gives it a neat little ambiance. Their standard pizza crust is a middle ground between thin and standard crust which gives the crust a crunch with just the right amount of chewiness but not overloading it with straight bread like a pan pizza. I honestly like their cheese blend pizza the best but any of the topping pizzas have not been a disappointment either. They do offer single slices but we have just always ordered a full-size pizza to split while eating in. The staff has always been friendly and has gotten our pizza out hot and fresh within a reasonable amount of time so there have been no complaints on that end. read more

Rudy's is now our go-to for pizza in Lawrence, they make pizza right! The crust is great, the sauce is amazing they fill the pizza with cheese and toppings, like a pizza should be! Other places in town hip on cheese even when pay for extra cheese, and the prices are way too high for the quality. Rudy's gluten free pizza was amazing!! Also, their gluten free wings were great as well. Rudy's is my go to for pizza, every time. Today I ordered on the app and mistakenly made it for pickup instead of delivery. I called the restaurant and asked to have it changed. I spoke with Nico and got it corrected, but there was a difference in the price. He asked if I could pay the driver with cash, and unfortunately (like most of the world) I have none. He decided to waive the fee! How nice is that! I cannot express how grateful I am for Nico's kindness. I wanted to like this place because I love pizza and where it is located is convenient, but the food was no good. I got a veggie slice, a side salad and it was supposed to come with a pop which I never got. I did buy a beer separately, but I realized after I left that that meal was supposed to also come with pop. She asked what kind of salad I wanted, offered me choices and I picked the Caesar.. The salad was nothing but lettuce and croutons with some dressing. No olives, no cheese, nothing. The supposed veggie pizza was only onion and mushroom. There were no other vegetables on that pizza. Not green peppers, not black olives, nothing. Those are the standard things on a veggie pizza. The crust tasted like plain cardboard. It had no flavor at all. The service was fine, the restaurant itself was clean and the ambience is nice. I went because it looks like at some point in its history this restaurant had been given rave reviews and had even been the best of Lawrence. I'm guessing it's been a while. I have walked past this place countless times and was always curious. Finally, last night (12/13/19) it popped into my head and we went. When you first enter the place you are met with a warm, inviting atmosphere and it had good traffic. So far, so good. The staff were typical of today's young people: disaffected, uninteresting (though they try with the hair, the tats, and the worst of all: the Cold Play hat). They all look and act the same, everywhere. But this is not an indictment of them, however it is on the food. Rudy's wastes the initial good will of the ambiance with unloved food. You have to work real hard to make a tasteless, undercooked, chalky, almost powdery crust. No crumb to it al all. Ever hear of "salt?" Then they up the ante and skimp on the toppings. Are they trying to "health it up" for us? It's pizza for chrissakes! Show me that you care if not for the pizza then do it for us, the paying public! Rudy's was the very first pizza place I tried when I moved to Kansas decades ago. I was in college and some friends raved about Rudy's. I couldn't wait to try their pizza. At the time, Rudy's was located where the Oread is now, underneath the old Glass Onion. Rudy's was a dive then and it still is today but that is what gives it charm. My friends were right about this pizza. It was fantastic. The sauce is what makes it special. It is difficult to describe but it is a sweeter tomato sauce but not over powering. The sweet is subtle and does not SCREAM at you. I would call it an artful blend of spices and tastes. There are a variety of toppings for Rudy's pizzas just like in other pizza restaurants. Everything I have had there has been fresh and very tasty. They do not scrimp on the toppings, either. Rudy's is reasonably priced and I have had very good customer service. Lawrence is a college town and pizza shops are a dime a dozen. Rudy's has its own little niche, though. It is college pizza done right. The weirdest ambiance. There's a water fountain in this basement pizza joint, a metal dragon on orange painted walls, tile floor, wood seating, rock walls. One TV was playing dragon ball Z while the other was obscure wild animals. It just looks so odd and thrown together....just trippy. The pizza was nothing to write home about. On a recent Saturday, we planned to get a few pizzas from Rudy's after a gallery opening we attended with friends and kids. "You should probably place the order an hour before we're ready to leave,' we were warned by our neighbor and an enthusiast of Rudy's. Wow. An *hour*? That pizza must be good, I thought, what with a fair amount of options in town and all. I mean, surely it must be better than Papa John's at least? But no, it wasn't. First of all, I am a stickler about how a pie is cut and I don't *do* tiny pizza squares. How else can I do the "Italian fold," hmm? The sauce tasted sweet and that is a huge no-no in my world. The crust was OK, nothing remarkable. Nothing horrible, and I suppose this is really a 2.5 star review, but between the wait and the hype and tiny squares and sweet sauce, well MEH! I suppose my standards are just too high for pizza parlours.
