While in Lawrence for a business event we arrived late in the evening and were fortunate to find that Old Chicago Pizza was still open, as many other restaurants had already closed by this time. I was greeted warmly by several team members as they were beginning to close for the evening. These guys were very hospitable and supportive. While they are primarily a Pizza shop, they also offer numerous sandwiches, salads and similar fair. As we had Pizza the night before, my wife and I were interested in other items - to which we were pleasantly impressed with the two "California Chicken " sandwiches which consisted of a "Grilled chicken breast, Swiss & avocado, lettuce, tomato". I also believe the sandwich also included just the right amount of a "seasoned" type of mayonnaise or similar spread, all contained on a hearty bun. I asked for Tots - my wife requests regular fries. It is impossible to express the true delight of these sandwiches ! What is so remarkable about an otherwise basic Chicken sandwich? ? Let's see: By far the "star" of the show was the generous chicken breast that was PERFECTLY char broiled. I don't know how they pulled this off, as I am an avid outdoor griller- I would be hard pressed to replicate the perfection of how it was grilled, including how moist - almost juicy the chicken was, including just the right amount of char around some edges. This alone was simply incredible. The sandwich was nicely balanced with a few slices of tomato, shredded lettuce and a light touch of their "secret sauce", a nice slice of Swiss cheese and a generous slice of avocado, all within a near perfect hearty bun. Both our fries and tots were equally impressive. Our sandwiches and fried / tots far exceeded our expectations, especially for what would otherwise be just a simple sandwich and fries. read more

We moved my youngest to Colorado and on the way we stay in Lawrence Kansas. Right next to our hotel was Old Chicago. You could smell it from outside our hotel and it smelled fantastic. We had a group of six and we all ordered something different and all of the dishes got high praise. I ordered the thin tavern pizza with onions and green olives and a pineapple smash beer. When I bring my mug in everybody's wants to see it, I feel at home even if this is not my home store, always enjoy the food and special. This location is own by private and not corporate. Two bad experiences, first both of our burgers that were ordered were severely under cooked. A month later we decided to give it another shot, but didn't even get a chance to because we waited for ten minutes after being seated and no one came over to even get our drink order. Place is big and clean. Greeted kindly upon entering and had fast service. I ordered the beer cheese burger with sweet potato fries which I thought was amazing. I even had it cooked medium well and it was incredibly juicy. Fries were crispy and perfectly salted. My husband ordered the calzone which he didn't care for. He said it was too much bread not enough stuffing so he left half of it on the plate. But overall enjoyed the place and would come back. read more

I would say I had a pretty standard service here. Nothing that stood out and nothing that went wrong. We were seated quickly and our waitress was attentive to us as we waited for our friend to come by. It was a Sunday night and they werent terribly busy. When our friend arrived, we ordered drinks and some pretzel sticks. They came out very hot and were soft and delicious. We ordered a double deckeroni Chicago thick crust and it came out in a timely manner. The crust was crunchy and the cheese and dough in the middle was nice and soft. The pepperoni was cooked well and some had a nice crunch to some of them which I enjoy. It came out hot and fresh. Our waitress served each of us a slice before leaving the pie. Lawrence has not had an Old Chicago Pizza restaurant from that chain since the one on South Iowa closed a few years ago. But now a newer and better one has opened in West Lawrence at the intersection of 6th St. and Wakarusa. While the menu has not changed by much, the dining room of the new restaurant, which just opened today, if much better. We were there during happy hour, which is 3 pm to 6 pm on Mondays through Fridays. We got the Italian Edamame appetizer and glasses of the Canyon Road wine at the happy hour discounts. We also got the Mediterranean Salad, which was good. But perhaps most striking was the fact that we were able to order something that is no longer on the menu. We ordered the Tomato and Mozzarella Caprese salad. It has not been on this chain's menu for many years, but they did it for us. It is unusual for a chain to be willing to prepare something that is not on the menu, but we were impressed that they were willing to do that for us. We did not try the pizza this time, but we will next time. We plan to order the Thin Crust Margherita Pizza next time. That particular intersection in West Lawrence now has many pizza restaurants, so the competition is high. We will be interested to see how their pizza now compares with the others at that intersection. read more

This is a new location for Old Chicago in Lawrence. The first time we were here, my husband's pizza and the Italian nachos were great! My calzone was a bit disappointing though. Today is our second visit and "winner winner chicken dinner"! The thin crust pizza was fantastic. My husband's deep dish pizza was great. The service at the bar was great as well. Another big bonus for us is that they have Buzztime trivia....and their trivia tablets are always charged and clean, unlike the other places in town that offer this entertainment. Came here on a Sunday afternoon with family and our two year old for pizza. I haven't been to Old Chicago since college when they were at a different location but remembered the pizza was good. The waitress was really attentive to my daughter to make sure we were able to enjoy our meal which was really nice. Let me preface that I have never been to an Old Chicago until today. I didn't really go there, I had take out. We placed an order online and it was supposed to be ready by 7pm. I do not get my food until almost 25 after. I made a rookie mistake and forgot to check the bag. Once I got home, I noticed that I did not get my French fries, or garlic bread. We also got extremely skimped on the onion rings...there were 4. If you are going to up charge for onion rings, make it worth my money. We will probably go back and eat in, maybe. OK this review is a little late. This review should've been given on Mother's Day because that's the day that I ordered a special meal in memory of my mom. I made it plain that this was one of my mothers favorite restaurants before her passing and that I really wanted to order one of her favorite meals to eat in honor of her. I ordered the Chicago seven with a side of artichoke dip.The artichoke dip was wonderful, I really enjoyed it but my mother was a true fan of their pizzas so I was really expecting the Chicago seven to really blow my mind and all It did was blow the air out of my hopes. The pizza was on a thin crust which I did not ask for that. The toppings were very skimpy for it to be titled Chicago seven. I couldn't even count seven toppings on it. Last but hardly the least was it was over baked. It was like chewing on cardboard. Everybody has an off day, and everybody makes mistakes but also everyone should own up to them. Admit, apologize, and correct, it should be the standard of every restaurant. Considering that this is the day where mothers are honored for their hard work in bringing precious lives into the world and raising them to be productive citizens, you would think that this place would do just a little better in making sure that every mother gets the same treatment. My wife and I decided to try this place out. We were fans of the other one when it was in town so we were excited it made a return. The new location is 1000 times better and the whole place is open and integrated. The service was attentive and polite and the pizza lived up to my expectations.
