I was initially hesitant to bring my very anxious dog to Ruff, especially since they don't separate dogs by size or energy level. However, after several months of daycare, I'm so glad I did! In the beginning, my dog was very shy and spent most of his time in a corner. But the staff was incredibly patient and attentive, making sure he felt safe and comfortable as he gradually came out of his shell. Now, he has a few doggy friends and enjoys playing with both the other dogs and the staff. Everyone at Ruff is so kind and caring--I truly feel that my dog is in excellent hands. The daycare also offers the best hours and location in Napa, which is perfect since I work out of town. I couldn't recommend them more! read more

Ruff daycare is a great place for daycare and boarding for your dog. Every time I take my dog he runs inside because he likes it. I have been taking my dog to Ruff for about a year and a half and have even boarded my dog here for a 10 day stay. I like that they have a temperament test before admitting your dog to daycare as well as other safety rules and considerations. Unfortunately, most complaints here are from folks that want some kind of exception to the rules or don't like the rules. Highly recommend taking your dog here. read more

Ruff to the rescue! Our hyper active husky can't get enough play days at Ruff. He races out of the car to the door every time we show up. This place has been our saving grace, giving mom and dad a free day. A very tired husky is a rare, and this is our delight when we pick him up from daycare. We have been bringing our dog to Ruff for 11 years. It is his favorite place and we have had the best experience. They treat him like their own dog and we know he is always extremely well cared for and loved. He's done daycare weekly as well as overnights for up to almost 3 weeks at a time. Now that he's older, he can't go as much because he has more health issues, but our new puppy is having the time of his life at Ruff too. We can't recommend this place enough. We know the owners are providing a safe and fun environment for our pups, which gives us great peace of mind when we can't be with them. read more

i literally have nothing good to say about this place. First of all it's like entering Fort Knox to even get admission. We've used many dog daycares in the SF Bay Area and I've never seen anything like it. The owners (especially the wife) are beyond rude and unaccommodating. All you have to do is read a few reviews on here to know that is the general consensus. Beyond that their hours are awful and not user friendly. They don't allow you to come into the lobby to pick up your dog. You have to sit out front and text them and hope to get a response. What year is this?!? Every time I turn around there's something I'm doing wrong at this place. Some major rule I'm not following. I would hardly call them a "hotel" as hospitality is lost on these people. My dogs have been romping around at ruff. for 3 years now (twice a week) and love it just as much as when they started going. They're happy when they arrive and exhausted when they come home after all their play. I have peace of mind knowing Cassie (their fabulous manager) is there cuddling my babies when it's cold and lounging in the sun on those warm Napa days. I've never felt like i was rushed out of there or like my dogs were unwanted, on even their busiest days of daycare. The staff is so nice and always let me know if they're concerned about one of my dogs well-being or health. We love our daycare friends! They might as well be family! ;) read more

The worst daycare possible. I wouldn't bring my dog there even if it was free. They discriminate against breeds even though any breed can attack and bite someone. If they cared about every dog and breed they would know how to operate and make it so every dog would be able to play. Instead they take the certain breeds and keep them locked up. We left our beloved mini Aussie here for daycamp while we went wine tasting through Napa. What a great place the Ruff is - my dog got to run around and I got peace of mind via webcam (when it worked). We had to fax in all of the Ruff policy forms and a copy of our pet's vaccinations prior to the trip. And we came early to complete a 15 minute evaluation. I would only recommend the Ruff daycamp for puppy-sitting during wine tasting if your dog is well-socialized because if they don't pass the eval, you'd be in a bind. The only downside is that small and large dogs are not separated. My mini got intimidated by the giant Great Danes and energetic Dalmatian (but everyone was supervised so still safe). She would have been more comfortable that way. read more

I'd give it less that 1 star if I could. Ruff is a truly rough experience. Just AWFUL!!! The blow up doll condescending know it all that runs this joint couldn't be more arrogant and off putting. So disrespectful and rude. I didn't understand the drop off policy, and my FIRST time dropping my dog off, I went at the wrong time. I've never been treated like such a child by another adult that I'm paying for their services. I was schooled and ripped a new a hole for my mistake. When I came to pick up my dog, she was COVERED in wet mud. "She found the one dirty spot on the lot." This is beyond weird because it's out of her character. Not to mention the now immediate need to groom her after PAYING for day CARE!!! The next day when I went to take my dog to return for daycare, my dog refused. I had to drag her in by her collar. This was very alarming because this is very unusual behavior for my dog. I usually can't keep her IN the car. Don't take your dog here. A dog moms intuition. Can't speak to the care provided, but I can tell you that they were unwilling to make a temperament evaluation appointment for my dog on the schedule needed and simply turned away my business. I need service for a specific day in that area and they were simply unwilling to accommodate. Incidentally, our dog is a sweet, docile 12-year-old puggle. I suspect she would have passed the temperament exam with flying colors. Ah well. read more

Haven't been here and don't plan on going because my dog is not allowed! Just an FYI to all pit owners... Don't waste your time, when I called for availability the lady told me that they don't allow any pit mixes here or any type of pit bulls then says there are extra fees for taking them, but said they don't take them... A little contradicting don't you think? But that's not the upsetting part. This is.... They charge you these extra fees of $25 or so dollars to take your pit but then they isolate them in another part of the building, so I have to pay $75 a day for my dog to be by himself. WOW!! I understand that a lot of pits have a rep but honestly there are a lot more good pits than bad when raised by the right owner and I'm not here to change your mind, you'd have to do that on your own. that is why they have behavioral tests at these places but Ruff. did not give us that opportunity. Oh well, their loss.... Not mine! Just had to warn other pit/mix owners to not waste your time!! read more

We chose Ruff based on their many favorable reviews for our puppy's first dog boarding. Checking in was a breeze and they showed us the facilities when asked. The facilities are kept pretty clean and the staff is friendly.. The one thing that we didn't like was that our puppy was put in with all the other dogs. After we picked up our puppy, she was wimpering as if she was scared. I don't know, it just didn't sound like she had a good time and that we had rescued her. Perhaps it's because she's a puppy, but we haven't seen this at the other doggie hotels we've put her up in. read more

My dogs are 16 and 11, and I had NEVER boarded them before until this year at Ruff. I couldn't trust my babies to anyone, but when I decided to check them out, I was surprised to find such a terrific place with really nice employees. I've left my pups with Ruff a few times now, and it's the only place I would leave my dogs in the area. The building is modern and nice to look at, but beyond that, the owners make sure it's immaculate and safe for all the animals. Woah, where do I start!! Our dog has stayed at Ruff a handful of times, ranging from 2 days to almost 2 weeks. Every time we pick him up, it's obvious he's been very well cared for. I should also mention he is a special needs dog who requires a little extra attention. Even though he can be a handful at times, the staff are always extremely patient! Everyone at Ruff are well-trained, friendly and have always been accommodating to our needs. The facility looks awesome and is very clean. There's plenty of space for all the dogs to play and even a lounge for them to rest in. I'd give them six if I could. We love Ruff but more important our dog loves Ruff!!! If you're going to Napa, I'd highly recommend dropping your pet off here. read more

HOUSE OF HORRORS - We boarded our miniature labradoodle for 10 days during our trip to France. I wish I had read some of the reviews more carefully before leaving our beautiful puppy there; allowing these horribly mean and rude people to take care of him. During our trip, the owner requested we allow them to use an electric shock collar and sleeping pills to control our puppy during the times he was barking or crying at night. Our puppy came home traumatized, he looks exhausted and sad and is not interacting with us as his usual, happy self. The management did not give us access to the cameras so we could keep an eye on him. Be prepared to be lectured by the owner when you pick up your dog. The management lacks the basic empathy needed to care for defenseless animals. Don't be fooled by the aesthetics of this place, this business is incapable of giving loving care. read more

Ruff has an amazing facility (apparently the owner's daughter is an interior designer) located in a commercial district on Napa. On a wine tasting weekend, we decided to drop the dogs off for daycare. They did a quick temperment evaluation and decided our dogs would be great. We watched from the lobby as they have a video survellance set up for the entire facility. They even have mobile access, so you can check on them from any web browser with an internet connection. I have mixed thoughts on their philosophy of not seperating dogs by size. I was truthfully nervous as I have a 7lb Shitzu and a 16lb Maltese / Shitzu. They had about 30-40 dogs of all sizes. It was nerve-racking to see my 7lb trying to play with a great dane (who was bigger than my wife). But they are under supervision all the time, so I guess it's ok. My dogs ended up just hiding in a corner for the entire day (even though they are pretty well socialized), so again - not sold on the # of dogs and lack of seperation of size. I will give them the benefit of the doubt though and blame this behavior on the dog owners. read more

So happy that we were able to find a clean and special place for our mini schnauzer while we were touring the Napa Valley. Based on previous observation the facility is too small to accommodate the number of dogs served between day care and boarders. The outside area doesn't provide enough shade for all of the clients. We boarded our little shy Shitzu here for 3 nights. It was his first time at a kennel. We were very impressed with the clean organized facitlity. The best part was that we could watch him on the webcam each day and we tuned in often to check up on him. We wish the poor little guy would have been picked up and handled more, but the experience was probably good for him to be with other doggies. He was really glad to be back with us. The rates are very fair. Most of the other kennels charge for an extra day when you board. If the dog stays for 3 nights, they charge for 4. Bt not at the Ruff Hotel. Which makes them one of the best values in the area. Avoid the Bonnie Boone Kennel. ( not a place for small dogs.) We checked it out the day we visited Napa and ran away. read more

Loves Ruff! Took our dog there for a few hour of day care for the first time. It's really clean and cozy. Loves how it has open space for the dogs to roam around. The living quarters are also great with TV and cushion! They also provide access to the owners of their cams in the living quarter. Will definitely use their services, again, if we're in the area! read more

Please do not take your fur baby to Ruff. If you need peace of mind that your dog is in good hands, Ruff is definitely not the place to take your dog. It was clearly explained by Theresa the owner, that the premium paid for boarding, day care and any requested "extras" is because "Ruff offers exceptional care...having trained, trusted professionals to look after your dog, plus 24 hour care, where someone is constantly monitoring your pet overnight." So how did the INFECTED HOLE (caused probably by a nail) through my dog's paw go UNNOTICED for 7 NIGHTS and 8 DAYS? When confronted, Theresa explained that not one employee, manager, nor herself noticed our dog licking her paw RAW during the week she was boarded. Instead of taking responsibility for blatant negligence or even empathy as our dog was in pain, Theresa accused me of being "rude, confrontational with aggressive body language". She explained that she "took time to review the video" of my interaction with her manager. Rather than being concerned over the welfare of our dog, she made it about me. Theresa, would it not be a priority to review the video of our dog in YOUR care and how YOUR employees failed to notice the festering wound instead? Fortunately, my husband was able to receive a partial refund to cover the vet costs, all the while Theresa still felt compelled to complain about my rudeness, not focusing whatsoever on how Ruff FAILED to care for our dog. read more

I was very excited to take my dog here for some socializing while I was at work. But after a short interaction I had with the owner (Theresa), she seemed to me like she wanted to fight - just because I had expressed a few valid concerns. I thought about it on my drive home and decided it's best to cancel the rest of my reservations I had scheduled. She didn't seem like someone I wanted to give my money to, and it didn't seem like my dog was enjoying it anyway as I'd hoped. I signed up for Yelp because I was very curious to see what other customers had to say. It seems like all the negative reviews had the same feedback about the owner. The dog care is good, it is the people care which earned them one star. These people close for TWO HOURS in the middle of the day. They are closed on holidays and you MUST PAY but CANNOT PICKUP YOUR ANIMAL. The dog is stuck there, away from you because they don't have anyone working the front. I got there at 12:30 to drop off my two dogs. They had been there before. They came home a little weird in attitude, don't know why, but I went back. But I was expected to wait until 2pm to check in the dogs. However, during this time, I saw one person leave, one person let the other one out then lock the door and then someone who claimed to be the owner wave his sandwich at me and say that LUNCH WAS MORE IMPORTANT than taking care of business and went on in and locked the door again. They lost a second customer who got there at 12:45pm and waited until 1pm just because she could not believe they they close for the full two hours for lunch every day (except holidays when NOBODY is there). Not going back. Can't recommend them. Their customer service is NON-EXISTENT!!! It is more important for them to eat rather than delay their lunch by 10 minutes while they check in an animal. That is just, plain wrong. I have owned a business. Did it for 15 years. I would stay late, come in early or even open up on weekends to meet the needs of current or future customers. NOT THESE FOLKS!!! These folks won't simply come out and let you give them money but would rather have their lunch. Lunch is obviously more important. I won't be bothering their lunch ever again. I don't think anyone should!!! Let them eat and not tend to business like a REAL BUSINESS would do any day of the week and twice on weekends. read more

While Ruff appears to be exactly the kind of place I would love to have my doggie play and stay, We have had two bad experiences. The first was when she was a puppy. She stayed four days - was exhausted when we picked her up which we thought was normal - but when we go her home she would not eat or threw up when she did. She had apparently picked up a parasite from another dog, a parasite that can be very dangerous for puppies. It cost us over a thousand dollars to detect and treat it but she got over and I in no way held Ruff responsible. So the last week I decide to get her a little 5 hours treat and take her there to play. I am in SF when I get the call that her ear has been bitten and she was bleeding but 'was okay now'. I couldn't believe it because: Number 1 because again my dog is hurt by going and number 2 because I observed they had a great many dogs and only one person in the yard and one person at the desk. I should have taken Lulu to Embarkadero Social Club in SF or Rawhide in Napa (they may not be as fancy but she has always been safe there). Here are the toppers. When I picked her up they did not bring her out in her harness. She could have run right out the front door when people walked in because of this oversite. She is a Jack Russell, she bolts. I have never seen a dog care facility not bring your dog to you in the safety of their travel gear and they charged me $32 for two carefree hours of thinking my dog was happy and three very stressed out hours trying to get back to SF is quickly as possible in traffic to get my dog back. They did let me know that if my dog need vet attention the other dog's people were responsible. It all felt like a big car wreck. read more

So ..... I got a call from Ruff a couple of weeks ago about my dog having fleas! I can swear that I use flea meds both oral and skin. Perhaps an anomaly but whatever caused this one off flea situation has been resolved. The rub now - is they won't return my calls when I call for an appointment for daycare. Have I been blacklisted? I feel like a criminal. I could explain the drama behind the call I got for them .... but I'm sure you can all figure that out. Disappointed for sure. read more

I would not recommened this establishment due to the fact that they discriminate against specific breeds. They obviously lack experience and knowledge when it comes to the behavior of canine's. Since they conduct temperment tests on all new dogs wanting to come in to socialize they should know what to look for and then act accordingly. I was very disappointed that accorinding to "Ruff" my 3 month old puppy was deemed too dangerous to be allowed to play with the other puppies.. OVER THE PHONE, they asked what breed he was and promptly said "NO, we dont allow those dogs here" .... so sad... read more

Ruff hotel was recommended to me by a friend who had boarded her dog there. She said it was great and the staff was very friendly. When I attempted to make an appointment the staff member I spoke to on the phone was rude, unhelpful and "snotty" from the moment she said hello. Although she confirmed she had space available, I was told that taking my dog was "going to be a problem" because he missed the 7 month cut off for being neutered by 5 days. 5 days! (and for the record his neutering appointment had already been scheduled). As it turns out, I've been told by other people that they do in fact take dogs that are not neutered, however that information was never offered to me by the rude little girl on the phone.
