Rugger's 1/2 price "pick your own burger" night on Tuesday is awesome and cheap. And they have a great selection of ever-changing beers on tap (I like Erie Railbender mostly and it's on special on Tuesday's). Janice is the best bartender in town and she's there most nights. Jukebox is awesomely filled with punk rock, emo, metal, rock, and other music your mom probably doesnt listen to now. It's really the only bar I like to go to aside from Gooski's. It's nice to go to a bar and it not be all IPA's on tap. If you stop in, say Hi, I'm probably there. Oh and it's a Rugby bar, which is cool. read more

It's divey, smokey, but cheap. Their batman shots are kind of what they're known for. There are some regulars but it's never crowded. I wouldn't seek it out but I wouldn't be upset if I ended up here again. Bar tenders aren't mean so that's always nice! read more

Ruggers is certainly worthy of three and a half stars. It's a low key pub a few blocks off of Carson Street. On the night I went, the crowd was a bit younger (on average) than elsewhere is South Side. I liked that they were showing the Pirates game. And, I was very satisfied with the number of craft in-season drafts on tap. read more

You know I'm more than ok with this place. I don't smoke and it can get kinda foggy and smelly. But guess what? You're at a bar and that's the price we pay sometimes. Really though I have never experienced a terrible smoke situation. It's a cute little place with affordable drink prices. The atmosphere is fun and mixed with peeps from the music scene along with neighborhood locals and others. Ironically it seems to be a no hipster zone (yay). Tried Ruggers for the first time. I didn't realize until we ordered that it was a smoking bar. Fortunately no one was smoking at the time, but that will keep me from going back. Two things I don't understand: 1) The rules in Pittsburgh regarding smoking where food is served. 2) How anyone can stand to eat in a cloud of cigarette smoke. Anyway--back to my review. They have a pretty extensive menu, including some nice veg options. I had the seitan steak sandwich which was pretty decent. It came with fried pickles, which weren't as good as I was expecting. The biggest negative for me was how long it took to get our food. I was there on my lunch break and it was not at all crowded. By the time our food came , my lunch hour was just about over and we had to inhale the food so that I could get back to work. So if you don't mind smoke and you're not in a hurry, you might enjoy Ruggers. Personally, I won't be back. read more

I've been going to Ruggers for awile now. You wouldn't expect them to have great food, but they do. Wed trivia is also the best I've been to. The DJ for it is hilarious and plays really good songs between questions. It gets packe din there fast on Wed so get there early. Love Ruggers! read more

I discovered this great little place around the last quarter of last year, via an online search of cheap bar eats. While I'm not a fan of smoking, it's usually not tooooo bad in here. When it's more than I like, I just grab a seat by the end of the bar, where the door is usually propped open. What keeps me coming back, is the tasty cheap food (Tuesday 1/2 off burgers is awesome), the great happy hour (6-8 actually makes sense, yes!), and the daily cheap craft beer is a nice plus. Some friends and I went for Happy Hour on Friday and really enjoyed ourselves. They have half off selected appetizers, and $1.50 domestic drafts. We ordered onion rings, 10 wings, cheese sticks, nachos, and fried mushrooms and our bill came to $16. All of the fried snacks were great, not overly greasy, and the nachos were awesome. My hands down favorite bar in South Side.I have been going to Ruggers for 3 years now the place is the shit. First they got an amazing beer selection that always changes. Next to that, beer is pretty damage cheap which is a win. Food is good too, go on a Tuesday if you can get a spot and you can make your own hamburger for practically nothing. My college favorite was a hamburger pattie, chicken filet, onions, tomato, lettuce, french fries, jalepanoes, pepperjack cheese, and buffalo sauce with a side of fried patios. This thing was so big it could barely fit in my mouth. I think with all of those extra ingredients the total cost with a Yuengling was $9 on Tuesday. The place fills up so you have to go early on Tuesday. But overall they have great happy hour specials during the entire week that are must to go to. read more

Rugger's Pub is one of the best "Off Carson" spots in the South Side. A good beer selection (including sometimes a certain unnamed and mostly unavailable selection from Fort Collins, CO) and surprisingly good food keep me coming back. Ruggers Pub was recently featured in a groupon. Since I had never heard about it, I looked it up on yelp and was pleasantly surprised. Dropped in this past Tuesday for half price burger night. This was 1 of the best burgers I've had in pittsburgh, simply because it wasn't fooled around with. The bartender obliged me with an excellent manhattan. The staff was friendly. The other patrons were also friendly. We were a little cramped at our table but, on leaving, I noticed that they have a picnic tables for al fresco dining. all in all, very nice evening. Great food. Enjoyed the whole experience.Oh, by the way, almost forgot... Don't skip the fried pickle chips. They're fantastic. read more

This place has some of the best food I have ever eaten!! What a dive. I would have never ate here if it was not for the Groupon deal. But I am very glad that I used the Groupon. Their wings are probably the best I have had in Pittsburgh and that is quite the compliment. The meat falls off the bone by itself basically. They are full wings. Been here a few times. When it's busy, I'm not a huge fan. The bouncer and the staff can be a bit rough around the edges. However, when I came here during lunch hours I had a nice experience. Their veggie burger is seriously amazing, and it's awesome that pickle chips come as the side. Nice selection of beer, as well. read more

So we were looking for a low key night with good food and drinks and this place did the trick! Small cool little place hidden off Carson St. Super clean and bartender Alex couldn't have been nicer ..he took the time to explain the specials and different beers on tap. Its an average South Side bar. They have a good beer selection on draft and in bottles. The prices for drinks are pretty average for South Side as well. The food is decent but the wait for the food can be terribly slow. We come here for the convenience of the location and despite not being the best we keep coming back. read more

I've never stopped here before because it's not the most inviting looking place, but the other day I was in a hurry on my lunch break and made a quick run into this place. I wasn't expecting more than typical bar food, but I saw a butternut squash soup on their sandwich board and figured I'd give it a try. Boy am I glad I did! I won't lie I'm a fan for smaller dive bars and while this might not a be a dive bar in exact theory it's got that local's feel to it that is a bit off the beaten path of the crowded bars on Carson St. Well when is the last time you went to a bar that sports a bunch of rugby photos? So you can smoke in here but no big deal to me especially with the front door open on a warm Spring night it was fine maybe if it was jammed packed with people standing shoulder to shoulder in the winter it would be an issue for some.. Grabbed some craft beers then did the downgrade on a craft beer level well not really a downgrade if you ask me to the PBR tall boy cans for $3.. Taco Night Monday for $7.99 all you can eat from the mini buffet set up.. score it is plus they got chips you can load up with some beef and nacho cheese.. The bar tender and staff were friendly and the crowd were enjoying a Penguins hockey game live on the tv while enjoying the freedom of a few puffs on those cigarettes and beer to go with it. read more

My husband tried to order a ruggers club sandwich because the menu said it was their best sandwich with onion rings. We were told that they did not have any turkey or ham to make the sandwich with and were also out of onion rings so we both ordered the ruben sandwich. They should call it the rubber ruben because the one small piece of corned beef that was on our sandwiches was thick and chewy like a piece of rubber. The pickle chips however were very good. BEST, ABSOLUTELY the BEST Reuben in the Burgh! Triple decker marble rye, stacked with chipped corned beef and great swiss. I've tried reubens in many places and this is one of the best. Also have a light version (turkey) for those concerned about calories. I do not like smoke, but I will put with it for this sandwich.
