I rarely write reviews, but once I found out Gary was on Yelp, I was happy to write this. Gary's been the only Herman Miller tech to work on my Aeron during the 25-year-old (or so) lifetime of the chair, he's replaced an armrest or two, the seat, the height cylinder. Prices have always been fair. While he works on your chair (I asked -- he said one of thousands), ask him about being a musician -- opening for Toto, etc. The guy has lived an amazing life. The Seattle Times should be reaching out to him. Some of the stories he shared during the brief time it took him to fix my chair made me wish I knew more about his life. Today's visit made me wish my older Herman Miller chair broke down more often. Such an awesome guy! read more

I sent over the information he asked for, he gave me quotes for new and used parts and we set up a time for the repairs at my house. I bought a second hand Aeron chair many years ago and was finally fed up with the sagging cylinder (a problem it had more-or-less since I bought it). I picked up an OEM cylinder on Amazon and tried to remove the old one and install the new one myself... Two hours later I was looking for local Herman Miller repair services to do it for me. No amount of pounding it, wrenching it, lubricating it, or swearing at it was getting it to budge. I found Gary here on Yelp and contacted him. He got back to me very quickly and was able to verify via a few pictures that my new cylinder was authentic (at least I did one thing right, or just lucky, in this whole thing) and I made an appointment with him for late in the afternoon later in the week. Gary was on time for our appointment and had everything fixed up in less than half an hour. Though even he admitted that the cylinder in my chair was more stubborn than usual. He was also able to date it, via his extensive knowledge of Herman Miller's products, to 1997. Turns out I have a 20 year old chair with what was probably an original cylinder. No wonder it was so hard to pry out! Anyways, Gary even tuned up some other worn out parts of my chair while he had it open, and now it works great! Even better than when I bought it! In short, Gary knows Herman Miller's products inside and out and has expert knowledge in servicing them. He provides truly excellent customer service and is a pleasure to work with. I've owned a Herman Miller Aeron chair for my home office for about ten years. Although it's one of the best chairs you can buy, mine had some wear and tear - one of the levers had broken off, the lumbar pillow was ripped, and the tilt lock was failing. I contacted Gary Ruhl over email (garchair@comcast.net) and he came out to my home to service my Aeron. I'd told him what was wrong with my chair over email and showed up with replacement parts. He spent over an hour rebuilding the "black box" under the seat pan, replacing/upgrading/adjusting various parts, and explaining the secrets of the Aeron to me. After the repair/rebuild was complete, we went though an adjustment process where I sat in the chair and he attentively adjusted various screws and spring tensions for my desired posture. Combined parts and labor was $97. My chair feels nice and tight now! Gary also sells new and used Herman Miller chairs in small volumes, so if you're in the market for an Aeron, I'd check with him - he can probably beat any price. read more

Summary: Gary is an outstanding example of a top-notch, small businessperson that "gets" customer service. Recently, my ten year old Herman Miller Aeron chair developed a severe case of saggy, floppy-arm syndrome. Since Gary (of Ruhl and Associates) was the local Herman Miller repair guy and since the chair had a 12 year parts and labor warranty, I called him up and asked for help. About a week later, he came by the house (I work out of a home office a lot of the time), repaired both arms, and inspected and tuned up the chair. Gary was courteous and professional, his work was meticulous, and he delivered more than was promised. What more could you want? In this era of declining customer service, it was refreshing to meet a small businessperson who really understands the concept. I give him a 100% on my scale of satisfaction, and would recommend him to friends and co-workers without reservation. Gary came to my house on Tuesday after I emailed him Sundaya fternoon. He had my busted old second-hand Aeron fixed up in about 15 minutes. The cylinder burst/broken, causing the chair to leak oil all over the place. He replaced the cylinder (charging me half the regular price for it) and also repaired some broken bolts and provided a missing cover for the main chair mechanisms. All of that labor (& parts!) cost me $5 more than I would've paid for the parts myself direct from herman miller, which is awesome. Highly recommended. read more

I called Gary to inquire about replacing the two stage pneumatic cylinder in my 97' Aeron Chair. Gary provided me an affordable quote and we scheduled a date and time for him to drive to my house and repair my chair. He was prompt, courteous, polite and most of all, very efficient. You can't find a more knowledgeable and efficient guy to repair your Hermann Miller Aeron chair(s). My wife and I were in the used office furniture business for years and have seen some fakes and flakes. Gary is the real deal. His prices are reasonable, he works efficiently and quickly and he doesn't blow smoke. He came to our place of (home) business, which was a pretty tall drive for him. I would give Gary 10 stars for my 30 year old Eames chair. He repaired the seat shock mounts at a very reasonable price after comparing with a few quotes. He disassembled, packed/shipped (to Herman Miller to install the mounts), delivered, installed and helped us clean the leather/wood. Our chair looks amazing now. I was slightly skeptical at first since I couldn't find a big fancy website for Ruhl and Associates, but judging by his work I can see that he's getting enough referrals that he doesn't really need one. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend his company and especially Gary for any Herman Miller chair repairs. Gary is great. Very skilled knowledgeable and does a great job. I have several Aeron chairs I bought over Craig's list that were less than perfect. Gary replaced the cylinder in one chair and fixed the squeaks in the other by totally disassembling and cleaning the chair. Now both chairs are as good as new. He also fixed the swinging arm problem by replacing the older parts with a modified newer part. And best of all he charged a very reasonable rate with a significant discount on the new parts. Gary just left. He came over in less than a day, replaced two Mirra broken cylinders, and charged us a very reasonable price. One of our chairs took longer than expected because it was so wedged in that the old cylinder wouldn't come out, so he drove home with it, hit it with something bigger (or better) and brought it back. I found Gary with a Google search that turned up this entry on Yelp. My office chair (a Herman Miller Aeron) had broken and I needed to find a place to get it repaired or the parts to do it myself.
