I've never left a Yelp review before but after a month of deliberation I just felt like I had to. I've gotten several haircuts here, but the last time I visited I got probably the worst haircut and experience I've ever had from Alyson. Start to finish, it was just a lazy and unappealing experience. On top of the terrible, uneven haircut that looks nothing like the photo I brought, she just in general seemed annoyed that I was even there. She never offered me a robe so my clothes were covered in little hairs, and when she blow-dried my hair she did it quickly and without ever using a brush, which resulted in a matted, frizzy bob at the end. I have never had someone at a professional salon dry my hair this way, and honestly all it did was highlight just how uneven and choppy my hair was. It was clear she could tell as well, because as soon as she was done she hurriedly offered to curl my hair for me to try to make it look better, but it just felt like an attempt to hide a clearly bad haircut. I've gotten iffy haircuts before and I always try to give it several washes and a couple weeks to really settle in, but this time around it has done nothing but emphasize how poorly it was cut. Honestly, just more of a bummer than anything because I really loved Ruiz before this, and now I have to spend a few months growing this out to feel good about my hair again. read more

I absolutely love Jackson Ruiz and owner Allen for there is no better owner, boss, mentor, caring friend or hair stylist in Austin! There is no gratuity because Allen pays benefits and fair wages. Yet, you are pampered the moment you walk in, from a hot cup of tea to a deep neck massage during shampoo to a hot towel hand massage during your hair treatment--all complimentary and remember, no tips allowed. Where should I begin. I had bad service before I even made it to the salon. I made an appointment online for a color service. A few hours before my appointment I get a call to confirm. We went over what I needed done. The girl on the phone says "chances are we can't do your service, but chances are we can" I hung up the phone already feeling confused. They even changed my appointment time so I could have 15 min with my stylist prior to my allotted time. After telling my colorist basic information for mt file she decides NOT to do a color services as the salon closed at 4:30. I got to the salon at 2pm. If that were the case my appointment should not have been accepted. I was not asking for something out of the ordinary, my hair isn't too thick or too long. Other salons are not afraid to go over time. I told her I was VERY disappointed. I sat in the salon calling other salons to see of they would randomly have any openings so late in the day on a Saturday. I decided to get my washed, trimmed and straightened. Prior to that the colorist approached me and said "did someone tell you it was going to be $25 for the consulting fee?" I told her no. Her response "well it will be $25" I sat there thinking why would I pay for a service I didn't ask for, I'' clearly annoyed at the fact I didn't get a service I was looking forward to. Next..I eneded up getting my hair washed, and trimmed. That was the saving grace of this appointment. As that process was wrapping up, the disappointing colorist walks back as says "ooh girl you're looking slayed" First do not speak to me like we are homegirls, second I literally just got a trim. After that process I was expecting the touch up on makeup due to the face the colorist yet again told me something that clearly didn't happen. There's some extra parts to this story. Needless to say I was Very unsatisfied. Not an experience I would want someone else to go through. read more

Ruiz Salon created a scheduling conflict during my appointment and then blamed and embarrassed me for it. I did not get the service I scheduled and was told it was my fault. They said they were very sorry but took no responsibility for their own errors and I was not compensated in any way. What I expected to be a fun indulgent day turned into a very negative experience. Great experience! My boyfriend and I got haircuts from Sarah. She was wonderful! She accomplished exactly what him and I both were wanting. On top of the great haircuts, I had no idea a haircut could be relaxing. The salon is beautiful! The room where you get your hair washed is dark &smells like a high end spa. This is my new favorite hair salon! It's in a fantastic location downtown so plan to meet friends afterward for food and bev. It's easy to feel special here since you are offered a drink to begin with, then you are whisked away to have your scalp massaged with amazing-smelling Aveda products in their super quiet and reeelaxing wash room. i work in Seaholm so thought Ruiz would be a great option for me, plus they were handing out coupons like hotcakes. I had shoulder length wavy, thick hair. I had taken in two photos of a long, very angled, layered bob. What i walked out with was Dora the Explorer. It is the worst haircut - she didn't take into consideration any layers or the density of my hair, or seemingly, even look at the photos i showed her of what I want. SHOCKED!!! I have been going to Ruiz Salon for the past 3 years and have always received AMAZING haircuts. I have never no showed an appointment and have ALWAYS called within 24 hours to cancel, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF TODAY. I rely on childcare to get my haircut, my husband travels 3-5days a week and I work the weekends, so it is a miracle, and a luxury for me to find time for a haircut. I had my sitter in place and she unexpectedly had to be admitted to the hospital because she is pregnant and has alarmingly high blood pressure. She will have to remain there for 6 weeks! I explained this to Randy, who answered my call at the Seaholm location, and he informed me that they will not book any future appointments for me without a credit card! I was shocked! Not only is this a medical emergency for my friend, this is so disappointing to me as well! I have been a good and faithful client and I cannot believe the lack of understanding and empathy. I 100% agree with a policy to protect the stylist from frivolous cancellations, BUT THIS IS A CLEAR EXCEPTION! I will not be returning, and certainly wont be recommending Ruiz salon to anyone. I have been looking for a hairstylist for about two years-since mine left town. I have not been satisfied with any of my haircuts until now. Amy at the Seaholm location works magic with my hair. I have been twice now and not only does she give a great cut but she listens to what I say so that when I leave I feel that she has styled my hair just the way I want it. From the time you walk in the door to the time you leave, every person you come in contact with treats you so nicely. I can't imagine that I will ever go anywhere else now. The only reason I'm giving this 3 stars is because of the experience I had last night. I've been coming to Ruiz on Lamar for almost 4 years and it's been nothing but wonderful. I was desperate for a haircut and the only thing available was at the Seaholm location and I took a chance with Adam. He was late to start, which was no biggies. He had someone else wash my hair and when I sat up to go to the chair she failed to wrap my hair and my entire back got drenched. At that point we went to the chair and Adam came. The haircut was fine, however at the very end he said "next time I need an hour with you because of how much hair you have... and it will be $25 more." Again, I've been coming here for about 3 years, with the same amount of hair, and never ever been told that. It was not a good experience and I will not be returning to the Seaholm location nor to see Adam ever again. read more

I love my stylist Abby but the salon itself doesn't seem to care about its customers. When I started going there I was paying $55 for a men's haircut. It was a lot for a men's haircut but you also get a nice facial and my hair is curly/wavy and is difficult to cut. Abby was going a great job so when the price went up to $65, I cringed but felt it was still worth it. The problem was they didn't tell me until after my haircut was complete and I was paying for it. I would've al least appreciated a heads up beforehand. So when they bumped it up to $75 (again, no forewarnings, found out when I was paying) I felt it was too much and decided to try other places. After a couple of unsuccessful haircuts (and an unhappy wife), I decided to bit the bullet and go back to Ruiz. I showed up on Thursday 3/19 and was told due to the coronavirus, no facials, etc and I was fine with that. But after my haircut, I was told it would be $85 even though I didn't receive the facial, etc. Never going back. Unacceptable to treat your customers this way. read more

I thought I loved my old place, then my stylist there went on maternity leave and I needed a haircut in the worst way and could not wait. I have happily been going here with no plans to change ever.
