LENGTHY I KNOW... BUT I CANT HELP THIS ONE This was the first time I visited this Hair Salon. I have medium length black hair that has a lot of body. I like layers and they had grown out. I have been neglecting my hair for a while because I come from Dana Point,California and am very skeptical about new stylists! I saw Janis Dugger! She was amazing! Not only did she cut my hair to my exact liking, she also helped me save my money by telling me that I only needed a root color and not all over! She said it just needed to be trimmed all over and when she's gets to know me and my hair better we can get crazy if we like! Haha! I am 53 and she is in my age group. Previous hair color: faded auburn Color I was hoping to obtain: platinum blonde Color I walked out of the salon with: grey/ash brown Color I currently have after a week or treatment: caramel blonde I was referred to this Salon by my supervisor. I had a faded auburn and wanted to go platinum, which I had before. I knew it was going to be hard because I need a color correction with my faded red hair. If it was done incorrectly, I would have a carrot head. My appointment was with Tiffany. Very girly name, so I was expecting someone girly. To my pleasant surprise, she was a very natural and easy going girl- a hippy, if I can say so. She was sweet, funny and most importantly, wanted the best for my hair. My treatment started with a light massage and her bleaching my hair. I've never bleached before so I was nervous but she explained the whole process to me. I was put under the heat (on a hot day) and I was sweating like a pig. She brought me wine to cool me down and I enjoyed the scenery in their little backyard garden. After washing my bleached hair, my nightmares came true. My roots were platinum blonde but my red turned bright orange. The ladies in the salon kept looking at my like I was insaneeeee. I was calm though because I trusted Tiffany. She added blue/purple dye to my hair to cancel out the orange and I came out with grey/brownish hair. It wasn't what I was hoping for but she said the color will fade with each wash. She was correct. As I washed my hair, it became lighter. It was like I got another dye job! I loved how my co-workers would ask me, almost on a daily basis, if I changed my hair again. It's been a week and I'm extremely satisfied with my dye job. I'm afraid that one day, when I wash it, it'll turn orange- but I'm praying to the hair gods that this won't happen. Tiffany (which I'd rather call Crow because she likes that name better) did an amazing job. It costed me $130 and was worth every penny. I also bought their shampoo and conditioner which was about $50 but worth the investment to keep my color in and healthy. She said I could come back for highlights to obtain the platinum I wanted, but I'm completely fine staying like this. Thanks Crow! read more

The whole experience was great, from being greeted properly by the sweet receptionist to haircuts and blow dries. I took my two girls (3 & 5 years old) for a much needed haircut and they look amazing and loved Janelle! Janelle is absolutely an amazing hairdresser and more wonderful with the kids. The kids really loved that they got their hair shampooed and I feel they got a much better haircut, since most places just spray the kids hair. I also talked to jenelle about better hair products and she gladly gave several suggestions for items out and in the store. After moving to the area from out of state, I was looking for a new hair stylist -- and there are a lot to choose from in the South Bay! After a few "meh" haircuts at various places, I tried out Rumba and received a haircut by Anna. She was phenomenal and my cut was perfect -- it was just what I was hoping for. After that first time, I have gone to Anna for five or six more cuts, and every time my hair looks awesome. She is friendly, caring, consistent, generous with her time, and most of all, just an amazing stylist! I feel extremely fortunate to have found her and sending my wife over to her soon, too. Rumba itself is a wonderful little salon, too -- it has a very warm and welcoming vibe, and the receptionist is always extremely friendly. There are tons of salons and stylists to choose from, and after trying out a few myself, I cannot recommend Anna at Rumba highly enough. She's the best! read more

I LOVE this salon! I used to go there exclusively, then moved away to school and it was a bit of a drive, but I look back at pictures of my hair then and am still amazed -- they somehow managed to make my haircut last forever and the highlights blend perfectly. They use Aveda products, so the entire place smells amazing, and they have a wonderful ambience (very colorful, with vintage travel posters up on the walls, and a little garden setting out back so you can sit and enjoy a complimentary drink while waiting for your hair to do its thing). Rumba was great! The salon is cozy but not cramped, and is decorated to the nines with eclectic pieces that have an ethnic/antique feel. Everyone was full of life and super friendly. I was in desperate need of a solid haircut after my last one wasn't satisfactory (see review of Lush Sculpting Lounge). I printed a picture - ALWAYS go with a picture! - called for an appointment, and crossed my fingers. Boy, was I lucky! My stylist was Janelle, and she was so sweet. She really cared about understanding what I wanted and making me happy. Since this is an Aveda concepts salon, they give you a head massage and use all of the best (Aveda) products. I swear up and down by Aveda, so this made me very happy. I wanted a solid cut, and that's what I got! It looked just like the picture and has since remained attractive, even while growing out. This is often hard for most to accomplish. But really, what mattered most was the care in which the cut was administered - they take the time at Rumba to make sure you walk out of there feeling great. And at $55 for the cut, I still feel great about it and will definitely go back! read more

What a cute salon. It has a great vibe - friendly and laid back, but very professional at the same time - so glad it's an Aveda salon too, as I love their products. Now, about TIFFANY! She's the best! I saw the review from someone - I simply don't understand - I've never had a better stylist. Tiffany listens to what you want and does her very best to give you the best service possible. I have been to this salon twice now and had wonderful experiences both times. I had been frequenting another area salon, but since I am pregnant, I was drawn to this place because they use Aveda "99% natural" hair color. I know hair color during pregnancy is deemed safe by doctors, but I was still wary of doing it and Aveda color seemed like a good compromise. =) My stylist is Janis and she is terrific! I am a big ol' snob about my hair because it is thick and very temperamental. In the wrong hands, it will look like an uneven, frizzed-out mess. I was quite apprehensive about seeing her the first time but she passed the test! And, she works quickly yet efficiently! For my shoulder-length, massive hair, it only took her an hour-and-a-half for highlights, color, cut and blow dry. She listened to what I wanted before starting and threw in her own suggestions. I couldn't be more satisfied with the results. Her personality is so sweet and she is just the right amount of talkative - a big bonus for me, because sometimes I want to just chill... The salon itself is cute and relaxing - decorated with a tropical/jungle vibe. I like that the stations are spacious and not too close to the next one (feels more private that way).. The price for the services was fair. I will keep going back to Janis because she makes my hair look awesome in a seemingly effortless way. read more

I had a wonderful haircut last month & I received a lot of great compliments. However, as nice as it was, it just didn't feel like me. So I went to Tiffany at Rumba and explained to her why I wasn't happy with the cut I got from a different stylist at a different salon. I brought her a picture of my ideal cut and explained why I liked it. We talked for a few minutes and than she pulled up the picture I sent her on her phone to keep it close by. My appointment was Friday July 3rd and traffic was absolutely crazy and I arrived with barely on time. However, Tiffany had me relaxed and calmed down within 5 minutes and I felt so much more relaxed after a brief neck scalp massage. Washed hair, picture close by and a wonderful new hair style emerged. After the cut was finished she showed me a few ways to style it that was easy and fast for someone who doesn't like to spend a lot of time styling her hair. She explained the difference of gel vs clay and I walked out with a fierce, very ME hairstyle. The studio itself is really nice. I love the decor and all the glamour is on the inside. There's a little back garden patio for partners, husbands/wives, friends to sit and read. I loved the tiki / rumba elements. Nothing felt rushed about the studio and the receptionist was really nice. read more

Made an appointment to see Ana, completely by coincidence as I was a same day, walk-in client and new to the neighborhood I should add. Ana was amazing! As a new mom, first outing without baby, she really took good care of me and made me feel relaxed for the first time in months! What intrigued me about Rumba is that they are an Aveda salon which if you've never been to one you are really missing out. Ana gave me a wonderful, much needed haircut. I've been going to Stephanie Bell for the past 5 years and have followed her to Rumba. She's continually proven herself as being talented, thoughtful, and friendly, and I'm enjoying coming to Rumba. As a stylist, Stephanie listens to my thoughts and preferences, but she's also confident in steering me in the right direction for major style changes. She takes my ideas into consideration while ensuring the final cut will match my face shape, hair type, and personal skill level to recreate the style. And, with no intention of diminishing her cutting talents, I personally think she excels at color and highlights. Stephanie knows how to color in such a way that people end up commenting in general, like "You look great today - what's different?" I called and Steve was very nice; I explained I needed information on how the coupon worked. They see me on a Friday (same day) and honored my yelp deal. I got low lights and s haircut with Tiffany. LOVE my hair! Will definitely come back to this place. Update: I have continued to go to Rumba for my hair stuff with Tiffany and I LOVE IT! She's sweet and listens to what I want. My appointment was 1/14/16 with Pamela. I was very impressed with her professionalism, patience and expertise. Pamela listened to what I needed and consulted with me though out the hair cutting process. She took her time cutting my hair and "fixing" a previous haircut I had 2 weeks prior at a different salon. She did a great job of blending in my long layers and thinning out any "bulk" areas (my hair is blonde, very fine but very thick and it tends to create "bulk"). This salon has great energy and everyone is very nice. I definitely recommend this salon. Since I have only personally experienced a hair cut with Pamela, I can definitely recommend her; however, I have heard all of the hair dressers are good. This is an Aveda Concept Salon and I have tried several of the products and really like them. My husband and I chose to work with Anna. Over the course of the last 4 years we saw the crew at Rumba 1-2 times per month and everyone goes out of their way to make you feel welcome! Suzy, Bill and the others always seemed like they enjoyed their work and authentically appreciated hearing conversations all about our life and trips and whatever else came up! It is a little bit of a bummer we won't be able to keep coming in because we just bought a house 10 hours from Rumba . I came to Rumba last week for a simple root touch up. I have blonde hair with some low lights. Unfortunately I got Tiffany as a stylist. Not only did she RUIN my hair but would not refund my money. I wasted a total of 6 hours that day in the salon. For a root touchup?! Rediculous. Not to mention $100. There were 2 other stylist trying to help as well. One being the owner and another who actually told me she was surprised I wasn't more upset. She told me she was impressed with my patience and would have made a scene if it were her. (Goes to show I was not exaggerating about my hair.) After many hours in the chair my blonde was no longer blonde but very brassy and my roots were BRIGHT ORANGE. After blow drying it for the fourth time, she says to me very rude, "Well?" I tell her I do not like it and it actually looks worse then before. The owner over hears, comes over and listens a second. I tell her I am not happy that half of my head is ORANGE and this is NOT what I wanted! She tells me she doesn't know what else to do. I was so fed up with her attitude I had had it. Asked for my money back and was denied because it was a "full serice". The owner did absolutely NOTHING to help and wasn't concerned about my happiness one bit. Never again will I come back here. If you're looking for a great colorist go to TRAX HAIR STUIDIO, near by. Erin does AMAZING work and fixed Tiffany's mistake today. read more

I wish I could turn back time and never have gone to this salon. I used to have beautiful blonde hair. I went to see Christie for a root touch up and left the salon with black/white/green hair. I had to go to another salon to have my hair color corrected. Now with all the processing my hair has had, I have no choice but to wait until my hair grows out. Not only was the color a mess, Christie did not listen to what I wanted for a hair cut. She did what she wanted to do. While I was having this horrible experience I had to listen to her go on and on about her family and life. This by far was the worst hair experience I have ever had. I was told by a friend that rumba is a really good place and that Pam was very good i live in orange county and drove 2 time up there very far for me but i was willing to try it out. the second time was because it was not the color i wanted it. i wanted ombre and it was orange. then i went back 5 days later and she added more blonde and over processed my hair. Pam is a great person and the salon is nice and the owner is great. But i will not be going back. i give the stars for the salon and the people that run it. read more

Bill McCrea is the owner here and he is an absolutely fantastic stylist -- I have been following him around the South Bay for over 20 years until he finally bought his own salon (Rumba) and was free to bring his vision for a comfortable, funky, creative, clean and friendly salon to fruition. I have baby fine hair and Bill is able to both perm and bleach it without frying my hair -- I always get tons of compliments on my hair and it is easy to care for too. She's flexible with scheduling and does a great job of listening to what I want and turning it into reality. Love all the Aveda products she uses as well, seriously obsessed with how my hair looks after! I just got my Brazilian blow out with Tanya and I absolutely loved it. She was very good at explaining everything that you need to know about this product, what to expect and how to treat it yourself so it lasts longer. Needles to say, everyone was very friendly and the salon had a peaceful and nice atmosphere, super clean and smelled great. Just saw Christie today for a quick bang trim! I moved back to Redondo Beach from New York and I get Christie Kempf more often!!! My hair is so happy! She is great with the color, cuts and straightening!! The Rumba salon has great energy and ambiance! Plus there is a great crystal shop next door and the beach is about 1 block away! BTW Christie does hair onsite for weddings at is reasonablly priced!!! Most importantly she rocks!!! read more

As I search for a new salon in Washington, DC I am so sad that I can't find any stylist as great as Melissa is at Rumba. I followed Melissa from her previous salon and I have continued to fly cross county to get my hair done by Melissa (and visit family) for the last two years. It seems that stylists on the East coast just can't highlight blonde hair or cut curly hair. If you live near Redondo Beach I definitely suggest you have Melissa do your hair, I just hope I can get an appointment with her next time I visit. read more
