So we brought it to Thunder Mountain Bikes. This time we had the pleasure of working with Mark who eased our worries by assessing the situation and determining that it was not a safety issue. Secondly, he identified that it could possibly be a bottom bracket. So he offered us to change out the bottom bracket immediately. He had the right part in stock and changed it quicker than a Ferrari pit crew. In no time flat my son's bike was back to perfect working order! We did not miss any rides and we kept charging on the awesome rocky desert trails! and it only cost $125 total - stoked!
