Shoddy work. I'm never coming back here again. I never write bad reviews but I feel compelled to in this case because its's been a real nightmare. I ran over a steel plate the city uses to temporarily cover road work. My trans started leaking a small amount but it drives fine, no issues [Lexus GS350]. I took it Russ Transmission and asked them to fix the leak [1st mistake]. They call me later that day and say they took apart my entire transmission and I needed to completely rebuild it for $4400. If I don't want to do the rebuild they will charge me $1100 to put it back together so I can go elsewhere to fix it. I decided to move forward with the repair because I needed my car back [2nd mistake]. After the repair the car drives the same as it did before. I don't notice any difference. A few weeks later I look under my car and notice 2 large bolts under my transmission missing their nuts [see pics]. I take the car back to Russ' and they install the missing nuts. Pretty concerning but I figure mistakes happen sometimes. $17k miles later my trans starts leaking again. I call the shop. They say this isn't covered by the rebuild warranty and I need to do a trans service for $300 which will replace the trans pan gasket and repair the leak. I do it [3rd mistake]. Less than 1 month later it starts leaking again. I take it back. they blame the leak on some 0-rings this time and 'fix it' [4th mistake]. Less than 1year later it starts leaking again. This time I decide to take it to Automotive Instincts in woodland hills. They find that the bolts on the trans pan are loose. They tighten them to spec and top off the fluid. NO MORE LEAK. Crazy. After this whole ordeal I started thinking back and now feel they tricked me into having my trans rebuilt for no reason. I probably just needed a new gasket and bolts tightened to spec, which would have been $300 not $4400. Pretty expensive lesson to learn. If you want your car fixed the first time do not go to Russ Transmission. read more

I brought my 1984 Toyota Corolla SR5 into Russ Transmission for a free diagnostic, and I seriously regret it. When I picked the car up around 1 PM, it seemed fine at first. It drove it for a couple of hours, which made me think everything was okay. But later that night, around 9:30 PM after getting off work, the car suddenly became extremely hard to get into every gear--even though my clutch had been working perfectly before I brought it in. Within about 10 minutes after leaving work , the clutch pedal went completely soft and basically stopped working altogether. This was NOT an issue before I brought the car in, and the timing is way too coincidental to ignore. I took it in for a simple diagnostic and got it back with a serious problem the same day. To make things worse, when I tried to address the issue, the manager, Mike, was incredibly rude and loud. He kept interrupting me and wouldn't even let me explain what happened with my car. Instead of trying to help or even listen, I was met with attitude and zero accountability. Between the sudden mechanical issue and the way I was treated, this experience completely destroyed my trust. I would not recommend this place to anyone unless you're willing to risk both your car and being treated with disrespect. I was recommended this place to simply ask about a transmission cost. The owner allowed me to leave my car so he could test it out. I had all the red flags. The owner talked to me crazy like was an idiot and let me know that he had been in the business for 45 years and that he had a telegraphic memory and that he could drive my car and let me know what was wrong for free. His behavior was RUDE, however, I was trying not to be overly sensitive and simply get the job done. That was on a Friday. He told me that he was super busy so I needed to be prepared to pick up my car on Tuesday. Hesitantly I said ok- in hindsight I should have followed my gut and drove off, but I left the car there and went across the street and got a rental car. Monday morning came and he called and told me that it wasn't my transmission and I needed to come pick the car up right away. I told him that I needed to situate my day and I would come pick it up but he would be gone by 2:30. As I was on my way, I called letting him know I was on my way, but just in case he was gone before I got there I asked him what was wrong. He was so upset and said that he needed to explain in person and that if I didn't get there in could just pay a Mercedes Dealer to look at it. I got there just for him to say that he speculated what may be wrong but don't listen to him...but it is not a transmission problem. He told me that over the weekend he drove my car over 4hours.... Y'all I love my car...for him to have my car over 4 hours and still not have much to say and kept saying "thanks for picking up the vehicle" like it was in his way. This was supposedly a part of his service. I was annoyed and honestly felt like someone had found any excuse to drive my vehicle for the weekend. The reason why I had to post this is because. The back of my seat looked like folks were riding in it and the passenger side had someone's shoe prints on my window. He had someone in my vehicle with there shoes on my window. I know it wasn't me. I have a kid that can't ride in the front seat. This guy may know transmissions, but he is crazy...rude...and I pray I don't end up with some tickets or God knows what else! Buyers beware!!!!! I am so upset that I didn't follow my gut and walk out.... Oooooh and the kicker is that now, I cannot open the hood of my car. He messed up the lever in the vehicle. My mechanic referred me to Russ' Transmissions. They took in my car, looked at it, and quoted me a repair price. I declined to repair it here. I pulled my vehicle and took it to another shop I had called beforehand. Mike, the operator at Russ' Transmissions, was professional, and communication was clear and direct. After I declined the quote over the phone, he asked if he could call me back after he looked into a few things. I said, "Sure." He called me back, and ten minutes after he had quoted me $7,000 to fix my car, the price magically dropped to "$5,500 and we'll do a super heavy-duty repair." I thanked him and told him I'd get back to him. I called back after making a few calls and securing a new shop to receive my vehicle. When I informed Mike I was having my vehicle picked up, he said, "I really wanna help you out. We're very close to Mel and Greg (my mechanics), and we like to take care of anyone they refer to us. Tell you what I'm gonna do...I'll do everything for $4,900, but I can't afford to do the job for less than that." Mike predictably gave me a cold shoulder while my tow truck driver and I were picking up my car. He's a nice guy, but his sales tactics belong back in 1985. I'm grateful my Mechanic, Mel, referred me to Russ' Transmissions, but I'm more thankful I have excellent built-in BS-Detectors. I got my vehicle repaired elsewhere for less than half the quoted price and with the same warranty Mike offered me. All is good. Wishing Mike and the crew at Russ' Transmissions a happy new year. I just had my 2009 Ford Explorer (260K miles) tranmission fluid level checked. They told me that the fulid level was OK and did not Charge me anything. They also said the fluid was was very burned, smelled bad and was a matter of time before the transmission would go out. They also said that trasnmission was not well built & is expensive to repair. Russ Trans shop has been in business for decades & really know their stuff. They were the only shop that did not try to up sell me on a lot of service that would not help me. I came here in 2007 and My Transmission has Been working beautifully ever since ..,they rebuilt my transmission and informed me that it was even better than what was in my original 1995 ford XLT Explorer and I believe him especially now Because the performance was phenomenal... so now it's year2024and it's it's time for me to get it either rebuilt, or replaced, since it's only going in 2nd gear at this point ... There is a reason why Russ's is so highly recommended. Ken at Perry's Quality Automotive referred me to Russ's when I had a Trans problem in my Super Duty (Ford has a lot of nerve, should be called "powder-puff-duty") but that's another story. I was dismayed at a transmission failure at a generally low-mileage point, and in a vehicle that is mostly used lightly, however it appears that this is typical with Ford's later - lighter duty transmissions in their trucks & vans. Mike showed me how many other of these Ford "super duty" vehicles he had in the shop, and that he had done 100's, if not thousands of them. He knew exactly what I was describing, and suggested a full inspection, and would let me know the next day. I prayed it wouldn't need a full rebuild, but it did. And Mike suggested an F-550 Trans-cooler to improve future reliability, so we did that as well. I told Mike that I would have to apply for a credit increase on my card to be able to pay the bill, and I would let him know as soon as I found out. If not, I'd have to pay for the tear down and have it towed back home to sit (no vehicle, no job.) I got the increase, but Mike still knocked off as much as he could from the bill, and saved me some money, he didn't have to do that, I didn't ask, but it helped. It ran perfectly, brought it back in a week for a follow up, he replaced a couple of missing fasteners on the grill, and that was that. This was 7 months ago, it was running great, until I started to notice some 'shuttering' at low RPMs, something was wrong, it was always from a stop, or going up a hill - any time it was under load, it shuttered and felt as if it were slipping. I called Mike, and he said he'd be happy to take it, pull the pan, do whatever it took. However, he said what I was describing, sounded exactly like a miss-fire. Coincidentally, I was having a miss-fire and had just had a tune up, new plugs etc. but it was still doing it. Mike said again, bring it in, and he'll inspect it, even check the cylinders. I went back to my mechanic, and we dug deeper and it turned out to be an injector, we replaced that, and now it runs perfectly. Mike was right about the miss fire (over the phone) without even driving it. Nonetheless, he was willing to go over it for me. Mike has been there 45 years, and definitely knows his craft, he's honest, and will stand behind his work. Integrity goes a long way. I'm fortunate in also having a repair shop that is in the same line of quality and integrity. Russ's knows their business - well - and Mike is straight and honest. They'll get it right. read more

I don't write reviews often, but my experience at Russ' Transmission was so positive that I needed to share with others. Finding a quality, trustworthy mechanic is a tough process, so I hope this helps guide people who are looking for any transmission work. I have an old 2002 Ford Explorer that was having transmission issues (slipping between gears, hard shifting into reverse and park). I read some reviews for Russ Transmission and brought it in for diagnosis, which I was pleasantly surprised that they don't charge for the initial diagnosis. After they did their thorough inspection, it unfortunately was determined that the transmission was shot (as I was expecting) and that it needed a full rebuild. The car isn't my daily driver and isn't worth that much, but it holds a bit of sentimental value as it was my late father's car. I decided to pull the trigger and move forward with the rebuild. The rebuild took a few days, and once complete they gave me a call that it was ready to pickup. When I picked up the car, they let me know that there would be an ~2k (I believe, it's been a minute so might not be remembering correctly) break in period, where afterwards I should bring it back in so they can make sure everything looks good and there's no leaks or anything. For that break-in period, the car drove great and it no longer slipped into different gears. The car was, however, having some issues with shifting HARD in and out of reverse and park. I figured it had to do with the break-in period, so drove it until I hit the mileage requirement and then brought it back into Russ', where I called out the hard Reverse shifting issue. They did their transmission tune up, but unfortunately the issue still persisted. From here, they held on the vehicle to further troubleshoot. Total they probably had the car in the shop for close to three weeks as they continued to diagnose and find the issue. They would call me periodically with updates on the status, and would run through the items they replace, at no additional charge, to attempt to fix things -- items such as reopening the transmission, O2 sensor replacement, and a few other items. Finally, after some trial and error they isolated that it in fact was not an issue with the new transmission at all, but some sort of computer issue that was causing the hard shifting into reverse and park, which required a replacement computer -- again at no additional cost to me. Once they ordered the part and had it installed and reprogrammed, the car drove great and without issue. Ultimately, I'm thrilled at the results and the level of service I received from Russ' Transmission. It took some time, but they were courteous and professional throughout the whole repair process, and went above and beyond in diagnosing and repairing my car, even with things, such as a computer replacement, that were technically outside the scope of transmission rebuild. The fact that they didn't charge me for any of the additional items or additional time in shop speaks volumes to the quality and caliber of this shop. If you need any transmission work, I can't recommend Russ' Transmissions highly enough. Mike and his team are amazing and you will be in amazing hands. You can trust that your car will be fully repaired and run great afterwards. I know I'll be back to them for any transmission issues on my other vehicles -- they've definitely earned me as a life-time return customer. read more

My 2015 Honda CRV needed the regular transmission service. I was referred by Chatsworth Auto to Mike at Russ's Transmission. I took it in and met with Mike, very nice man, said he would have it done by noon. I got a call from Mike telling me they found a seal that was leaking oil, not terrible but needed to be fixed as soon as I could and that he could take care of it. The bill for my service was lower than what he originally quoted me which was a nice surprise. I returned to his shop to have the oil leak repaired. He ended up doing extra repairs that were not expected and did not charge me any more. I must say I am leary of repair shops but this place is great. Mike did additional work for the original quoted price, nice! He went over my bill with me, explaining all of the charges and he gave me a great warranty. I highly recommend Russ's Transmission.
