I'm updating this review because the business response is misleading. I have a voicemail from Steve clearly stating that they did not want to get involved with my vehicle because another shop had already worked on it and he did not want me to possibly "get upset at them too." That was the exact reasoning given. This was not about warranty. It was not about saving me money. I was fully prepared to pay for an inspection or any necessary correction. I was simply asking for a professional second opinion. If a shop refuses work because they're concerned a customer might "get upset," that raises serious questions about confidence in their own work. A reputable shop stands behind its skills and diagnoses issues regardless of who previously touched the vehicle. Changing the explanation publicly after the fact does not reflect well. I stand by what I said. I had a very disappointing experience at Automotive Instincts in Northridge. I called and spoke with Steve about looking at my car after another shop had worked on it, and he basically told me they didn't want to touch it because another shop already did the work. His reasoning was that he didn't want me to "get upset at them too." That makes absolutely no sense. As a customer, I'm simply looking for a professional second opinion or proper correction if something wasn't done right. Refusing to even inspect the vehicle just because another shop previously worked on it feels unprofessional and dismissive. Cars get worked on by multiple shops all the time -- that's normal. Turning someone away out of fear of a bad review instead of standing behind your own skills says a lot. Very disappointing customer service. All lights in the console turned on like Christmas tree, eyesight off, active cruise control, brake,..... I took to the dealership and they were going to charge me an exuberant amount. Honda dealership down the road gave me recommendations and quoted me over $2k of repairs and made me think my car is in a worse condition than it really was. When I called up Automotive Instincts, Heidi helped me out. She was clear and professional on what they would help provide. There's no beating around the bush. They were able to get me in and even had a shuttle service. Ended up only spending $350 with full safety inspection and brake fluid service. And helped top off my other liquids. Their price is reasonable and comparable to the others in the area (I checked with 5 other auto repair shops). What makes them stand out is how they approach the issue instead of taking Honda dealership for their word, their great attitude, and overall service conduct. They will provide you clear paperwork of what service as been done at the end and the cost breakdown. Robert (sorry if I misspell) is the best driver with the shuttle service he provided. He's a delight to talk to on the drive and has many of years under his belt to ensure you get to the next destination safe and sound. There wasn't a rude inkling of any sorts here. This is my second review for this place. I needed new tires for my minivan, and had questions to 'dealer recommendations' on my vehicle. Steve was very helpful in getting me the right information and costs for my tires. He even called me back a few minutes later to confirm he quoted me the correct amount. An amazing repair shop that you should definitely check out if your car is a brand that they support. I came to this shop to get my car check out because it was making noise when making a left turn. I saw online that it could be that the brake pad metal clip is out of place and just need to be adjusted back. So instead of going to the dealer who might charge me a lot for the service I came here based on their wonderful reviews. I talked to Steve through Yelp and told him when I was going to the shop. He wasn't there but told another employee to expect me.. They realign the metal clip, checked out my brake pads and tires during the process. I also asked that they be careful around my custom door sill and they respected that. The best thing is that they didn't even charge me for the service of realigning the clips, added some lube and now the noise is gone. read more

I called Automotive Instincts after taking my car to a Toyota dealership. The Toyota dealership made me wait nearly 30 minutes to speak to someone even with an appointment, and when they called me later that day, I was freaking out that they were recommending nearly 5 grand in repairs. The Toyota shop makes you feel like you're just a number and you can never get ahold of them on the phone. Automotive Instincts, in contrast, answered right away and were very attentive to my concerns. Heidi told me that they would run their own testing on what was essential to fix, and she kept me updated every step of the process. She made me feel very relaxed and I knew immediately within the first couple minutes that I made the right choice coming here. The team even went above and beyond and repaired a brake noise that I had forgotten about. Their attention to detail is amazing and their customer service is excellent. So far, my car is running incredibly well, and they were able to make all of my needed repairs at a much lower price than the Toyota dealership offered. Integrity: Actions Speak Louder than Words . . . How do you choose an auto shop to work on your car? If you are an engineer or an already mechanically minded person, this is fairly easy because you can use your training and experience to pick the right place. But what if you are like me and have trouble screwing in a lightbulb? Then the choice becomes exponentially harder as you have no idea whether a shop is honest and/or does good work. At some point, you simply have to make the decision to trust the people at the shop. So how do you make that decision? First, if you are reading this, then you are like me and you check out Yelp - hence the reason why I am leaving this review. Second, I have learned that "actions speak louder than words" when you are evaluating the integrity of people. Here are some of the "actions" by the owners and staff of Automotive Instincts and you be the judge. * My uncle suffered from a sudden illness and could not get his car. When our family found out about the car, it had been sitting at Automotive Instincts for over 3-4 weeks. When we retrieved the car, they were truly concerned about my uncle and did not charge us anything for leaving the car there for so long. * The car needed a total engine replacement and my 82-year-old uncle did not have much money. Automotive Instincts does not do that kind of work. But, Heidi at Automotive Instincts spent days finding the absolutely cheapest place to do the work for us. * Unfortunately, my uncle passed away during this process. Once the engine was done, we discovered there was a transmission issue. In a strange way, I was kind of protective of the car as it was linked to my uncle. I wanted to at least get it running again - even if we ultimately could not keep it. I was about to spend 3k on a transmission, when Heidi cautioned me that if I were her family, she would tell me not to spend that kind of money on that old of a car if I did not plan to keep it. How many auto shops do you know that would do that???? I came to my senses and declined the work. And out of sympathy for my uncle, and just pure niceness, Automotive Instincts did not charge me anything for the multiple days they spent diagnosing the car. Actions speak louder than words. And these are just some of the "actions" the team at Automotive Instincts took on my family's behalf. They are truly people of the highest quality and integrity. I cannot recommend this shop enough. I was very disappointed to recently learn that Heidi is behind the counter at AI after my experiences with her at R&M. Her M.O. is to make everything seem like it's the end of the world and that you're super lucky to have her on the case... which always feels like she's setting you up to get hosed. That was definitely my experience with her at R&M. I've been an AI customer for a long time and Edwin & the other guys have always been straight shooters. It never occurred to me that I would have an issue. But now.... My buddy, a former R&M customer, that is now with AI said he has had the exact same experience with her at both places, to the point that he will no longer go there. I will now go the woodland hills location even though it is 25 minutes away from me instead of 5 minutes. They have really good mechanics but if you must go here request Edwin or one of the other guys as your service advisor. read more
