I had not had a massage in way too long, so it was badly needed. I called a few minutes after 5:00 p.m. on a Saturday and made a last-minute appointment for as soon as I could get there. I said that I would definitely be there by 6:00; I was marked down for 5:45 in case I arrived early. I opted for the Thai Combination massage. Kris walked on my back and leg muscles, which were incredibly tight. I did not want my massage to end! I was given 10% off the total bill for my first visit. I was also given a loyalty card with a stamp; after 10 paid massages, I will get one for free! My only complaint is that it was not a full 90 minutes - more like 85. That may be because I was still filling out some paperwork at the scheduled start time. This shouldn't have been counted against me, but I can imagine this was not conveyed to Kris, who was likely just basing off the clock rather than a time. Got a deep tissue massage and it feels like I have a whole new back! You're able to customize your message at check in and tell them where on your body like to focus and the intensity of the massage. I prefer a very intense deep tissue, with most places usually still being too gentle, but not here! It was up to par if not better than what I got in Thailand. My masseuse did an incredible job and my neck injury actually feels better after! It's so relaxing here and the bathroom smells amaaazing. Got a 10% discount for my first time. The massage was fine, the place is fine. I had some issues, though. First, they have you request a therapist when booking, but apparently don't honor the request. I requested a person from reading in the reviews that she checked in with you along the way. (They say you can ask a question on their website, but they didn't answer after 2 weeks! I wanted to request the owner, but that wasn't an option, so I picked the person I'd read about.) All of the Thai people there were very nice. The Caucasian man at the front desk was rude and unpleasant. I filled out their new person form and requested a strong massage, but I was expecting a woman; a strong massage from a man seems stronger. Due to language barriers, I was not able to communicate my needs (leg injury) or desires. As a result, I was a bit tense and didn't enjoy the massage as much as I hoped. It was too strong and hurt my leg a bit, but I couldn't explain I'd like to start out softer and go strong. Of the 3 Thai folks I spoke with, one spoke English pretty well and communicated with my masseur. Of course I couldn't understand exactly what she said, so I don't know how well she explained my requests. At the end, I was offered tea by the masseur but it never came. I asked the man at the desk when I was checking out what was the name of my masseur and explained that the person I had requested was female. He told me that I had to have put the name "in the notes," that they had a different system. I didn't understand what notes and or how I was supposed to know that when I clicked on a name online. He kept repeating the same thing quite gruffly. It was difficult to get change from him or even an envelope for the tip. Then he offered me a drink, but I decide to forgo the tea rather than wait for him. The weirdest thing was when I got home I saw an email from the place sent 50 minutes after my massage appt and during my massage saying that my appt time and therapist had changed. So weird. This from a place that charges a steep penalty if you don't change or reschedule in advance! I like traditional Thai massage and a strong massage. I had a fabulous massage in Thailand and then later a problematic one due to the language barrier and not being able to explain about my leg issue. (I assumed that she knew what she was doing cause the first masseuse did, but it was bad.) I did not expect a language barrier here in Oakland. I'd like to go back and try again, but I'm afraid. Amazing studio located right on Lakeshore. I found this place on google and with easy online booking made an appointment for the following day. There are two locations so make sure to pay attention to which one you're booking. I heard at least one customer arrive at Lakeshore with an appointment at the other site. They graciously accommodated them. I was welcomed immediately and the woman running the place was really helpful with making suggestions about what spots may help alleviate some tension. The room set up is exactly what I was expecting for Thai massage, but they do offer an array of massage types. My masseuse use the perfect amount of pressure to work out my shoulder kinks.
