The Russell Home Thrift Store benefits the Russell House established by Vantrease Russell who was lovingly known as Grandma Russell. Russell House was the first of its kind when it was established in 1951 as a licensed home for children with special needs. The seed for the home was planted when Mrs. Russell's doctor asked if she could care for a disabled child who had nowhere else to go. She agreed even though she had seven children of her own. Through the years the Russell House has cared for more than 1,500 physically and mentally challenged children. They have relied completely on private funding and revenue generated from this thrift store. There is a memorial statue for Vantrease Russell in Cypress Grove Park which neighbors the Russell House and often served as a place for Russell to take the children on outings. Russell Home Thrift is actually two stores side by side. There is the regular thrift store and a higher end boutique store next to it. Both sell gently used items donated by the community. The thrift store had an abundance of clothing for men, women, and children, accessories, household goods, faux florals, lamps, and books. Next door at the boutique you will find furniture, collectibles, name brand clothing and accessories, special occasion gowns, and a wedding dress corner. Russell Home is a worthy charity to support. Their legacy of supporting disabled children during a time when no one else was stepping up is remarkable. There is a varied inventory and prices are more than fair. All of the volunteers I spoke to were friendly and welcoming. Please consider supporting this worthy charity with your donations and funds. You just might find that one of a kind treasure. read more

This was my first time here. My mom wanted to check it out. Shopping here funds the Russell Home, a home for young adults and children with special needs. It's a nice store for shopping for a good cause. They have a pretty good selection of the typical things you find in a thrift store. It's nice that there's no guess work the pricing on the clothing. The blouses and jeans are all $4-5 each! It's a great price! They're not for profit, so it's nice that they don't price gouge on the donated items like others. read more

This is my favorite little neighborhood thrift store! I love that it's very organized and that all the prices are already labeled. Their prices are much better than Goodwill in my opinion. It's not a huge selection, but I found a lot of good gems in here. If you want to donate, I would recommend donating to this thrift store because all the funds go to a good cause and they're not gonna mark up things much higher like other thrift stores. read more

I am near this store quite frequently these days so I decided to stop in. They occupy several storefronts, but the entrance is fairly obvious. Upon entering the first thing I realize is I'm surrounded by glass. Like any thrift store they have a ton of merchandise packed into a fairly small space. This is a tight store to get around in and I would recommend being quite careful if you have any type of mobility device. Many of the shelves were marked with prices for everything on the shelf whereas some items I found had no prices at all. There were a few people working in the store, but nobody spoke to me at all. I walked around and checked out most of the regular merchandise, but I skipped where all the clothing is. I found a couple of items that interested in me, but I wasn't thrilled with the pricing on them. Overall, I would say this is not a bad store, but you shouldn't be aware of what you would pay other places before you enter. Definitely worthwhile if you like to support smaller businesses. read more

The prices are good; the place is pretty organized, if not a little tight to get through. However, I was not impressed overall. I'm a seasoned thrifter and enjoy going to new places. The CD collection is pretty good although half of it is Christian/Worship or Christmas music which is not of interest to me. A little difficult for me to find tops/blouses and jeans that weren't all/mostly polyester or other synthetics, and the cotton stuff I did come across did not "wow" me. The jeans, in particular, were VERY "meh" and all looked + felt like low-quality denim. Don't bother with the wallets and bags as they're all fake leather garbage; jewelry is of similar quality. To put it short, this is like a cheaper GoodWill. I will have to research on the charity aspect as I am autistic, or "atypical" myself and would like to support the cause if it's actually helpful for disabled children. As of now, I'm not going to discourage anyone from checking this place out, but it's nothing special in my opinion... MAYBE would come back. read more

The regular thrift store is fine if small; there is home decor, well-used clothing and shoes. Next door, however, is the boutique. This is where I found a Kasper suit and a Banana Republic dress for $15 each. I don't mind those prices being a little higher because the clothes looked like new. read more

When I first walked in I was greeted by a really kind sweet lovely young lady with red hair. She helped me find everything I was looking for and did so with a smile on her face. Then as I was browsing alone the store owner Alvin Harris comes barging through the door yelling at the young lady to as I quote "CLEAN UP THE DAMN STORE ITS A DAMN MESS" as he started to shuffle items around in the shelves and saying out loud how customers are animals and he can't believe the store looked that way. Now in my honest opinion the store was set up nice, clean and organized. It was very easy to find items. Just have to be sure to check the top of the shelves for a price listing. Some areas in the crafting section did not have a pricing sheet listed and another customer asked the owner for the price, he then yelled at her "YOU GOTTA USE YOUR EYES AND LOOK AROUND" as he stormed into his back office behind a curtain. The other customer and I were in disbelief at how this owner not only treated his employee but treated his customers too. The young lady with the red hair just proceeded to work with a smile on her face and it nearly broke my heart bc I could see the sadness in her eyes. The only reason I proceeded with my purchase was bc of the nice girl. I will never be spending another dime at this location and I'm truly disappointed and disgusted. read more

DO NOT SUPPORT THIS SO CALL CHRISTIAN THRIFT STORE! My 24 year old son is Autistic and was volunteering here , the management told my son he could not volunteer here anymore, it was because he could not stay focused. The management was giving my son too many directions at one time. You CAN NOT TELL an Autistic person many things at once. They can not comprehend, they can only understand one thing at a time. He is not an employee, so it is not like they are paying him. He is very friendly and helpful, customers like him. Then to say they will still use him on their blog!! Seriously to make themselves look good "ACT" like they support the disabled. Drove 45 minuets in traffic and arrived a hair after 2pm trying to donate hundreds of dollars in NEW in the wrapper items my wife had purchased a few months back and decided not to use and was told to come back another day. The fact you would refuse to accept items that these kids could use is disgusting. I drove past 3 Goodwills to get here just to end up throwing this stuff in the trash as I wasted enough time trying to give it away. The woman I spoke with before driving over neglected to tell me that they're closed Mondays and donations end at 2pm. read more

They have really good things. The clothes are better than other thrift stores and the place is set up well. I gave it 3 stars because the manager was having a very loud phone conversation in the back with her obviously personal friend and you could hear everything. It was really unprofessional and I could feel the negativity. When you want a nice calm shopping experience the last thing you want to hear is the manager yelling at her friend Tina. This is the 2nd location for the Russell Home Thrift Store (1st one is on Michigan Ave). If you've ever visited the Michigan Ave location, waiting to help support a great cause but a little turned off by the layout, then try the new store. It's better organized, better lit, cleaner, and most importantly, entirely indoors. They probably have a bit less stuff than the other store, but you find and get to it easily (for some reason, it's always raining when I stop at the other store). They've got a very decent selection of men's and women's clothing, somewhat less kids stuff, a good stock of shoes, jewelry, and accessories; lots of books and movies, kitchen supplies and other housewares, and some furniture. They also usually have some donated snack of some kind--recently it was Christmas cookie trays from Publix--so you can have a quick nosh while you're out and about shopping (I would add that this seems to be first-quality candy and packaged cookies and such, not questionable past-date stuff). The people working there are polite and accommodating, they take credit cards and accept tax exempt forms, and always very clean and neat. Not as large as Goodwill or Community Thrift, but just as well organized. All in all, a very worthwhile stop whether you're looking for something specific, or just enjoy poking around. read more
