Nice little no-frills diner. We stopped here for breakfast on our way through Salina. We did not order anything elaborate, scrambled eggs, biscuits & gravy. The sausage gravy was very tasty, which is important for a diner. The staff seemed stretched a little thin, but our waitress was very sweet and did an excellent job of multitasking. Do not stop! Not sure what it is with bad food in Salina KS but it seems to be everywhere. We stopped here for breakfast and ordered a coffee, apple juice, and a veggie omelette with hashbrowns and sourdough toast. The apple juice was colored water. OK, so they're trying to save money, no big deal. Then we took a bite of the veggie omelette. The egg was fine, but the veggies were gross! How can a veggie be rubbery and limp at the same time?? They tasted like they had been frozen since the Ice Age. We literally couldn't eat it after that first bite. The server asked how our food was and we politely told her it was the worst omelette ever. She just said "Oh." Didn't ask what was wrong with it so it could be fixed for future customers, just asked if we wanted something else. We declined. The hashbrowns were greasy and tasteless. The only thing worth eating was the sourdough toast. We ate a few bites of the hashbrowns and left all the rest of the food and apple juice. When we got to the register no adjustment was made on the bill. We paid it and left. Sure was a lot to pay for sourdough toast. For what we paid we could have bought a toaster and loaf of sourdough bread and toasted it ourselves! read more

I had pancakes with ham and eggs. The price was kind of steep (just under $10), but the portions were big. Both the ham and eggs tasted great, but the pancakes were basic - not bad or good. My wife had a cheese omelet that had too much cheese in it for her, which is noteworthy since she likes cheese. The staff were friendly and we left full. More expensive than I would have preferred - the bill fit the portion sizes not so much the flavor. read more

I have wrote a review on how awful my daughter and I were treated at this place. I wanted to add to it that I did later go talk to the manager. She didnt care at all. She said she was sorry in a tone that she really wanted us to just leave and not expect her to do her job. I told her we would never go there again and she seemed very happy about that, just telling me, ok in a happy tone. She said all she was willing to do was to talk to her. If however you want a good meal and to have your family treated with respect, go to I Hop, or Flying J.... They will give you much better. I hop is loacated by I-70 9th street exit on Diamond dr. Turn North from the exit onto 9th and left onto Diamond dr. I Hop is also at Magnollia exit on I-135 going through Salina. You go east at the top of the exit and when you get to 9th st (first intersection) turn left and I Hop will be to your right. Yeah, not a great restaurant at all. The salad bar was halfway decent, but that's about it. Bland chicken strips and took 3 tries with 3 different servers to even get dipping sauce. Taco Bell is just down the street.... clearly a better choice. read more

Never ever go there unless you want to be messed up. No service, 100% sodium food to help you drink more water....

This was a good little diner. Huge portions. Great French Fries. The wait staff was not overly friendly but no one was rude. It took a while to get our food but I overheard a server say they were short two staff members. While we were there it appeared the owners came in to help make up the slack and get things back on schedule. For that reason I would definitely go back again. My real review would be 2.5 stars. This is the kind of place that makes me think (hope) that the lack of effort placed on decor will translate into extra time spent making great food. Well, that's kind of right... I will admit that we've been spoiled lately by some really top notch breakfast places. And I also try to judge almost exclusively on food and not decor. But... While the food here is good, the lack of cleanliness of Russell's would keep us from ever returning. The restroom was atrocious, one of the dirtiest of our trip. I had a bad experience here. I ordered a dinner salad and a waffle. Yes I know that's a weird combo for breakfast but if you are looking for anything other than eggs and grease then this is your only option. The dinner salad consisted of a handful of lettuce, 2 grape tomatoes and 2 carrot sticks and it had sooo - let me emphasis again- soooo much ranch dressing that I couldn't eat it. I asked for more lettuce ( iceberg lettuce of course) and the sweet waitress did bring some but even that didn't do the trick. I just pushed it aside in utter disgust. So I moved on to the waffle which I was excited about however it was absolutely disgusting. It had a greasy wangy aftertaste that was repulsive. I took a few bites of my sisters omelet to get the taste out of my mouth and it wasn't much better. I will not be coming back. read more

This is an average truck stop diner along the interstate. Portions are very large, prices are little steep and the pie is fantastic. I ordered the chicken fried steak ($16.95) with mashed potatoes and the salad bar. The steak was large but seemed extra greasy and tough. Salad bar was mediocre (bagged salad mix). My parents ordered hot roast beef sandwich ($10.95) (open face) and a bowl of beef vegetable soup ($3.95). They weren't impressed by the sandwich but they thought the soup was pretty good but nothing spectacular. We ordered peanut butter pie and coconut cream pie and both were very good. The food is good. The portions are great. They also have some great waitresses. Their management is less than desirable, especially Alley, the night manager has been extremely rude and unfriendly every time my friends and I have been in there. She is very unprofessional, rude, and snotty! She even had the nerve to tell my boyfriend that I was just using him, and that was the first time she had ever seen me in my life! You can not even talk to a manager when needed! I think that if people want good food plus good service at a family friendly restaurant, then they should go to Bayard's Cafe. The management and staff is very friendly, and professional. The manager Lisa even takes the time to visit with her customers, and makes them feel welcomed. I think the management and staff at Russel's could learn a thing or two about hospitality from the management and staff at Bayard's Cafe! read more

Wow. Just wow. If you're in or near Salina, be sure and stop by if you're a breakfast person. But make sure you're hungry, because the portions are HUGE! I don't know how big the chickens are here, but 2 scrambled eggs serve up a lot more than where I'm from. I suggest you start small and order more as you go along. Went for breakfast with Hubs dashing between raindrops. Nearly full restaurant, mostly locals (a good sign). Good food (HUUGE portions). I had bacon and cheese omelet with hash browns and biscuit. Hubs had scrambled eggs, sausage, and French toast. We each ate half of our food and boxed the rest up for breakfast tomorrow before we head out to Kansas City. Nice place, friendly staff, observant manager who stepped in and helped the waitresses as needed (good job that), great food, and would go back if we were staying longer than the 2 nights. read more

I've eaten there a few times on my trip south from Iowa off of I70.... The prices are very expensive, but their portions are large, too. My husband and I actually share a meal. Their hamburgers are good. Onion rings are decent, too. Once we ordered breakfast and the pancakes were so large, it was as big as their plates!! Salad bar is basic. The boiled eggs were too salty on the bar, but overall it was decent. Pies are homemade, but are made with canned pie filling. Ok, but not wonderful. I do love the strawberry shortcake, however. My family and I stopped in for dinner on Wednesday evening. The restaurant had a few tables seated off to the left, a party of ten in the back, and a few tables on the right when we arrived. The host/manager saw to it that our children felt welcomed and took our drink order. Our server (seemingly inundated by the party in the back), finally came by to take our order. She gave us the impression that she didn't really care about the guest experience. We waited for 20 minutes before our food even arrived. During that time, our server didn't check on us once. When our food did finally make it to the table, one meal came out incorrectly, one meal was inedible by my four-year-old, and the others were sub-par. I did speak with the host/manager upon leaving and explained the issues we had. She did comp my four-year-old's meal and apologized, in part. There were quite a few excuses, too. Based of my own experiences at Russell's Restaurant, we will not return. I hope that others have a much better time! read more

The quintessential old-fashioned little diner that probably hasn't changed much since 1970. Portions are more than anyone really needs to eat, and I've definitely had worse coffee. Breakfast is good.
