I've been visiting the General Store since I was a kid ! It's definitely a nostalgic place for me, and still a great place to visit for all my favorite Russian food items. Despite being a small place, their food selection is huge ! They have a wide variety of candies, pre-packaged goods, drinks, etc. They also have a fresh baked goods area which is great for getting treats to take to friends. The deli counter is amazing ! They have a huge selection of meats and cheeses. Definitely make sure to check out the freezers too - the pelmeni variety is amazing. The store also has a large collection of Russian books, movies, gifts, medicines, etc. The shopping center it's in isn't too exciting, but that's great for parking! There's a lot of places to park and it's never overly busy.

Our son took us here to scope out all the goodies. We bought and shared a tasty Russian ice cream sammich....the sandwich part was like a thin waffle cone layer with a really thick ice cream layer....chocolate, they had other flavors too and different kinds of frozen treats. They have a meat counter with different cuts and sausages. We picked up a few kinds of cookies, I even found some sugar free coffee candies. Everything we've tried was really good. Lots of different kinds of bread. We'll be back for more goodies.

The store is open from 10 am to 8 pm every day. huge selection of sausages, cheeses, canned food, fish, cakes. Polite service.

Ran into this store completely by accident while in the area. I've been meaning to go for a good while. I found the Armenian apricot preserves I'd been searching for and my mother picked up some cornelian cherry preserves. For a small store there were lots of interesting foods for sale that I hadn't seen since I was in New York. I'm going to have to return because I completely missed the taramosalata. Hope to head back next Sunday to take a closer look for that, the cheese and the fridge with the plemini. If you're looked for Georgian and Romanian wine, you might find what you need. They have some on the shelves in the front and in the back of the store as well. As far as Armenian wine they had one bottle of pomegranate dessert wine. I didn't check out the Russian media area in the back of the store because frankly my Russian language skills aren't up to speed. As far as toys and trinkets, there were many cute matryoshka dolls and they even had some shaped like Santa from Christmas time.

So glad I found this store. It's a quaint little shop with almost exclusively Russian goodies. From produce, wine, chocolates, sweets, books, to general care, it was easy to feel like you're in Russia for just a few minutes. Prices were good, and quality was great. I will be back next time I'm in town. (Heads up that the word "Russian" is off of the signs. "General Store" is this place ;-))

This is one of my favorite spots in town. Great food and the best chocolate!! Highly recommend them. Everyone is friendly and they're being careful with covid and limiting capacity since it's a small store. Will definitely be returning. I don't even mind the hour drive from my house!

The inside definitely has a Cajun feel to it with the decor; very Louisiana. I was greeted and made the 4th quarter decision to get a muffuleta, chips and a canned pop. My order came quickly and I was on my way. The sandwich itself was BIG. Loved the olive salad. The cuts of meat were quality. Prices are reasonable Loved it. Worth the visit if you can.

So when I decided to give Angelo Z's a try, I came in hopeful but ready to judge with the precision of a seasoned shrimp connoisseur. First, I'll give credit where it's due: the place is designed beautifully. Clean, inviting, well thought-out décor. The staff? Top-notch. Friendly smiles, fast service -- the kind of welcome that makes you want to pull up a chair and stay awhile. But then my shrimp po'boy arrived. And that's where things took a turn. The bread was toasted -- yes, toasted -- which, for a Louisiana po'boy, is already a red flag. To make matters worse, it wasn't even the traditional French bread that's light, airy inside, and has that delicate crackle on the crust. Instead, it was a dense, over-toasted loaf that crunched like I was chewing on a roofing shingle. Then came the real deal-breaker: I bit in and realized the shrimp hadn't been deveined. At all. And for anyone who knows seafood, that black line running down the back isn't some "seasoning" -- it's grit and waste. One glance at that and my appetite clocked out. I understand I'm not in Louisiana anymore, and I'm all for creative spins on classics, but there's a line between "putting your own twist" on something and missing the fundamentals altogether. Unfortunately, this missed the mark in a way I couldn't overlook. Beautiful space. Wonderful people. But for me? A shrimp po'boy that isn't deveined, on the wrong bread, and toasted into oblivion isn't a po'boy worth coming back for.

Which grocery store in Houston is the best of the best? You guessed it - HEB's wealthy relative -…read moreCentral Market! Unfortunately there's only one in the city, but it's "centrally" located (get the pun?) off Westheimer and 610 near the Galleria. We frequent this grocery store a few times a month, and though the products are more expensive overall than your normal Kroger or HEB, the selection is amazing and worth the visit. Here's what I love about Central Market: the produce, salads, sandwiches, meats, seafood, wine, cereal, yogurts, bread, coffee, ice cream, spices - actually pretty much everything. Even their flowers are incredible. Now here are some pro tips; listen carefully: - if you want the real, full CM experience, go on a Saturday or Sunday. You'll feel like you're at Costco waiting in line for samples and trying to push your cart without running someone over. But if you want a quiet, peaceful experience, go on a weekday during the day. You have to work, you say? Take a few hours of vacation or personal time off and head to Central Market. It'll be better than your last few vacations. - they have an app and it's amazing! You can save 20-30% each shopping trip with their offers and coupons. Make sure you add the deals in your app before you go to check out. (This part is a little annoying.) - ice cream section: buy the Hellenika Ube coconut. Just do it. Taste it and you can thank me later. It will change your life. If you want to overpay for it, fly to Seattle and find it at Pike Place Market. - stop buying spices like peppercorn and coriander seeds in bulk that are stored in bottles and jars. Go to Central Market and just buy exactly what you need for your recipe. You'll spend 24 cents for this and 58 cents for that, etc. Not $5 for a jar of spices that will lose its flavor or expire after a year. And the big question everyone asks: Central Market or Whole Foods? Whole Foods has way more locations, but CM takes the cake. It's just amazing. Trust me.
