I live in one of those charming 1912 Edwardian rentals that's completely neglected by an absentee landlord who won't ever fix anything. Part of that Edwardian charm is a large oriel window -- a term Rick taught me! -- with curved windows on a rope and pulley. And the rope inside the window frame had completely snapped. Rick was able to fix our window, plus our window in the kitchen, our busted closet door hinge, and our stuck doorknobs all while dealing with my 3 week old baby in the room crying, nursing, and getting a diaper change. :-D Rick was friendly, professional, extremely competent, and explained the problem and solution of each fix which I both appreciated and found interesting. Rick helped me to install some shelving units and hang artwork recently. He was professional, friendly and also straightforward, which I appreciate. I had wanted to hang curtains, but Rick advised that hanging a rod could potentially cause significant damage to the walls given the material behind them, so I opted to go in a different direction. He was also able to maneuver a shelf that did not come with the perfect fitting pieces, and it seemed as though he was prepared with his own materials in case I did not have what was needed. Overall a great experience, and now my place is feeling more home-y! This is an update to a prior review from 2011 where I gave Rick a poor review because of scheduling difficulties (probably somewhat unfair on my part). 95/hr. 2 hour minimum. His pricing is purposefully not stated on his website or on yelp. For those looking it was $95/hour with a 2 hour minimum for our job. So $190. He knocked $50 off the price for showing up at a time of his choosing and paying in cash. Pretty pricey in my book. Overall, services provided were good, so can't complain on this. Some negatives: -On a personal level, he's a bit off-putting. He sort of talks "through" you in his email communications and in person. He listens, but he's petty ready to make whatever point he wants to make when you're finished. -It was also pretty weird that when I asked why his pricing was so hidden (literally, no where to be found, even on yelp) that he gave me a rundown of how he has a background in marketing and that it's on purpose. *Shrugs* Cool I guess. I needed help fast with a few things in my apartment after my tenants moved in a few days ago, i.e., install a chain door lock, replace two toilet seats, and repair one power outlet. I contacted three handyman services via Yelp. One responded and informed me that his first available is Sep. 3. Another responded and informed me he is available September 8. Rick responded the same day, communicated his business terms and billing rate clearly, confirmed the scope of work, emailed me an estimate, then sent me an evite to get on his calendar for a service appointment for the following morning at 9:30 am. Today, Rick showed up on time and was ready to work. He worked fast and with precision. He completed all the prescribed tasks quickly and then asked " What else can I do ? " Really? So he adjusted the track light and shaved down the ill-fitted door all within the pre-agreed upon time frame and the invoice came below the estimate. At the conclusion of the service appointment, my tenants were happy and so was I. Wow!!! This is my first time using a handyman service. Honestly, I had my reservations before meeting Rick. But from now on, Rick will be my go-to handyman for all repairs and maintenance that he is willing to take on in my rentals and home. read more

I have to admit that when I called the Russian Hill Handyman I didn't have high expectations. I've dealt with my fair share of handymen and needless to say I've been underwhelmed. Over-promise, under-deliver, over-charge is the norm. Not to mention the sweaty behemoths that you have to invite into your house. It isn't a pretty sight. This tool may be the sharpest in the shed! I was stymied by an incredibly dark and deep closet -- no electrical existed in the immediate area; stick up lights failed to provide enough illumination and using a flashlight was getting ridiculous. Rick (The Russian Hill Handyman) took a look at the situation and actually created a lighting panel -- completely custom -- which he installed expertly and within his original estimate for time/cost. He was professional, tidy and respectful of my time. I honestly am thankful every time I flick the switch. In contrast, during my time in The City (15 plus years), I have hired a number of handymen and endured any number of problems: late, overcharged, incomplete and/or shoddy workmanship, messy, unprofessional, drunk (that was a really bad one!). Rick is like the Knight in Shining Armour for those of us who are challenged in the home repair/construction area. I had a large, unwieldy shelf to hang in my hallway and was way too intimidated to attempt this on my own. I got Rick's number from a friend and in one phone call, he rode in and knocked it out in no time - all the while, entertaining me with great stories and a fun sense of humor. Before letting him escape, I cajoled him into look at a bedpost that refused to stay in place, turning my 4-poster into a weird 3-poster bed. Countless others had tried to fix the hazard-waiting-to-happen but none of their fixes worked. He diagnosed the problem in 10 seconds flat and is scheduled to come back and fix it once and for all - in time for arriving houseguests! He has - hang a flat screen Tv and a mirror for me - installed bathroom vanity top and faucet - installed new hinges on my cabinets - replaced several lighting fixtures -installed recess lighting - sanded down doors that didn't close Rick was easy to work with and I would definitely work with him again. Finally someone I can trust, someone that shows up on time, and does a great job and loved the suggestions to continue to improve my living pod I call home. I hired RHH the help me remove my very heavy, large old TV (about 120 lbs.) and hang my new TV, remove some furniture I couldn't lift, find the skeleton key match to some old vintage locks on closets doors in my flat, and replace light bulbs I couldn't reach. While there, he recommended what room to hang the TV and location on on the wall, how to hide the cables. What affordable options to use since some cables are very pricey and how I could work with my budget when purchasing accessories for my TV. He also, without me asking, suggested ideas for space-saving in my small flat and fun, funk ideas for hanging art on walls that were empty.
