They know what they're doing and their client service was perfection. My older friend had a significant birthday this year with the passing of her husband nearly a year ago exactly, It was a special birthday considering her failing health and I gave the restaurant a heads up we would be celebrating. Nathan, Sabrina and Johan were a primo team and outstanding on all counts. They made extra sure my guest was comfortable and most importantly, appreciated. The fried burrata was a star as was their caprese salad. Their spinach ravioli was delicious and despite how full we were, it was gobbled up. Their pizza was great as well as their arancini. The New Zealand Sauvignon blanc was delicious with a spicy finish. We ordered two bottles. The vibe is very communal and it got lively around 7pm on a Saturday. It was quiet and intimate when we arrived around 4:45pm so come a little earlier if you typically would like a quieter meal with fabulous food. Again, can't thank Nathan. Sabrina and Johan enough. The entire team was fabulous and humored us with our questions in regard to Sicily. I will be back and will bring others: thanks again!
Amazing service, but unfortunately the food didn't live up to the hype. Ossobuco: 5.5/10 I've had a lot of ossobuco over the years, and this was honestly my least favorite. The meat was fairly tender, but it lacked flavor almost entirely. The sauce didn't add much either, and the risotto underneath was just okay. Nothing was necessarily bad. it was just surprisingly bland. For a dish that's usually rich and comforting, this one felt forgettable. Pesto Pasta: 7/10 This was decent and definitely better than the ossobuco, but it wasn't anything I'd go out of my way to order again. The pesto was enjoyable, and I appreciated that it wasn't overly acidic. Beyond that, it didn't really stand out. The cocktails were good, the service was fantastic, and the complimentary limoncello cake was delicious. That said, when there are so many great Italian restaurants in the area, I don't see myself returning. I left feeling like the food was more hype than substance. Food: 5/10 Service: 10/10
We went last minute for our anniversary and got seated almost right away. We started with a bottle of Moscato and some bruschetta. The Moscato was nice and sweet, and the bruschetta was super tasty. I didn't get any pictures, but I had the lasagna and my husband got the half rigatoni. Seriously, that lasagna was probably one of the best I've ever had. So meaty, so hearty, just amazing. Everyone working there was so nice and helpful, and you could really tell they all worked well together as a team. We're definitely coming back!
The gnocchi was ok. I prefer it other places. It was more dense than others I've had and I prefer them more billowey. The flavor was good though. Service was great. The tiramisu was good and had a lot of coffee flavor. They build it in front of you. Calamari was good and crunchy. Was here for a friend's birthday. It was nice. The cake was delicious and not overly sweet.
A very mixed review. The appetizers were very good, the calamari was perfectly light and crispy, and the caprese salad with delicious pesto was a hit. But, both of our pastas were just average. They actually forgot the sausage on my pasta, and by the time a side of it came out 15 minutes later, it didn't taste very good anyway. The staff did make it right by removing the upcharge and giving us a free dessert (which was really appreciated). I wasn't a huge fan of the seating arrangements. The tables are so close together that the waiters constantly bumped our plates and forks just trying to squeeze past. Sadly, I don't think I'll be back.
I really wanted to like this place, but overall it was a disappointing experience. The biggest red flag for me was seeing the cheese wheel being stored right next to the bathroom, covered with just a napkin. That alone raised serious concerns about cleanliness and food handling. And the server would place the pan of rigatoni on the bottom uncovered Service was actually good -- the staff was nice and attentive, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, the food didn't match. The meatballs tasted like frozen, pre-made ones, and the sauce was very basic and bland. The garlic bread and marinara were honestly not good -- the bread had a strange, off taste. The lobster ravioli with shrimp was just okay, nothing special. The "special" cheese wheel rigatoni with sausage was the biggest letdown. It wasn't served hot, and the pasta was overcooked and mushy -- definitely not what you expect from a dish that's supposed to be a highlight. The wine also tasted very basic and underwhelming. The only thing I genuinely enjoyed was the spicy margarita -- that was actually really good. Unfortunately, between the food quality and the cleanliness concerns, I won't be returning.
I came here on my birthday, it was a rainy night and the restaurant was empty but felt very homey and intimate. The staff is wonderful, kind and knowledgeable and gave great recommendations. The appetizers were DELICIOUS, both the calamari and the burrata are a must. The sauce on the burrata was so good i could eat it but the spoonful. The calamari was breaded and seasoned to perfection. The fettuccine Tartufo was so good and rich. The pasta special they had wasn't as good - it needed to be more balanced in taste. Over all very beautiful restaurant and a great place for Italian.
First time visiting. We started with the Burrata Caprese. It was light and refreshing, although I would have preferred more pesto and balsamic glaze. For the mains, we had the Pappardelle Al Brasato and Carbonara. Both dishes were good but not "wow." The pappardelle al brasato had a light beef flavor with a touch of some type of truffle seasoning (no mushrooms in the dish). The sauce had a description of "truffle cream sauce." The sauce wasn't creamy at all. I thought the sauce could have been a bit richer. Again, both dishes were still enjoyable. The cannoli was your average cannoli. Service was amazing! Very attentive and friendly. I loved the atmosphere - it had an elevated rustic farmhouse aesthetic. Overall, I still had a great time! I would def try a pizza if I ever return. I saw a table with what looked like a pepperoni pizza, and it looked really good!
**3.5 stars** It's an adorable Italian restaurant that justtt missed the mark for me. While everything we ordered was rather good, it just wasn't what I was expecting. I got the Mediterranea to start followed by the Paccheri Salsa Alla Vodka. The Mediterranea salad was one of the most beautiful salads I've ever seen! With heirloom tomatoes, olives, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, pickled red onions, capers, and arugula, the colors were beautiful. It also tasted just as good as it looked! Super refreshing and plentiful. Onto the Paccheri Salsa Alla Vodka... If vodka pasta is on the menu, I am almost always going to order it and unfortunately Rusticucina's just wasn't my favorite. It tasted more like a cheese pasta and I wasn't getting too much from the sauce. Maybe I need to come back and try a different pasta? Overall, it was a great dining experience! The service was friendly and attentive and the interior was very warm and inviting.
If you are Visiting SD and looking for an Italian Restaurant that features a Cheese Wheel than Rusticucina is the place to Eat. My family and I decided to give this place a try and I felt like we won. Started off with some Delicious Calamari (great flavor, not greasy). I ordered the Classic Lasagna and it was very flavorful, you can tell it was made from scratch (I loved the sauce). My daughter ordered the Chicken Parm with Noodles (She rated it top 3 she's had in her young life). My wife went old school and ordered Chicken Alfredo. My other daughter ordered the star of the show...Fettuccine Tartufo which was made in the Cheese Wheel at our table. I tried it and fell in love. Rich, creamy, cheesy with mushrooms, truffle, and flavored sausage. It was DELICIOUS... I highly recommend this restaurant and strongly suggest you order what ever is on the menu for the Cheese Wheel The service was excellent. Very professional and constantly checked on our table refilling our drinks.
The evening began promisingly, with an appetizer that showed glimpses of care and balance. Unfortunately, the experience declined considerably once the main courses arrived. Both the pasta and pizza were excessively salty, to the point that finishing either dish became genuinely difficult and this observation comes from someone who generally enjoys assertive seasoning. Service, regrettably, lacked the attentiveness one would expect at this price point. I ordered a Coke yet was served a Sprite instead. The drink also took far too long to arrive because it had apparently been forgotten, and I had to follow up again to remind them. At this point it merely served as an attempt to counterbalance the overwhelming saltiness of the meal. To the restaurant's credit, the waiter later offered a complimentary dessert in an effort to recover the experience. However, the gesture ultimately misunderstood the issue at hand. The concern was never the cost of dessert, nor the price of the meal itself. Dining alone, my bill came to approximately $98 before tip, plus an additional $20 gratuity. The pricing felt appropriate for the establishment; what did not align with expectations was the execution, consistency, and overall hospitality. What disappointed me most was the absence of refinement in details that should have been carefully managed in a restaurant operating at this level. A memorable dining experience is built not only on quality ingredients but also on balance, precision, timing, and thoughtful service from beginning to end. Unfortunately, those elements were missing throughout the evening. As I prepared to leave, a woman dining nearby with her husband and child asked how the pizza was. I answered honestly: overwhelmingly salty. I ultimately boxed the leftovers, though they will likely remain untouched before eventually being discarded. That alone perhaps summarizes the experience best. In hindsight, I should have followed the recommendations from Yelp. Instead, I chose to try somewhere new in the spirit of spontaneity. Regrettably, that decision ended in disappointment, and it is not a restaurant I intend to revisit.
Rusticucina was one of the highlights of my San Diego trip. I ordered the Paccheri Salsa Alla Vodka and the Fiori di Zucca, and both were excellent. The vodka sauce was rich, creamy, and full of flavor, coating the paccheri perfectly. The portions were generous, making the meal feel like a great value. The Fiori di Zucca was light and crispy, with a delicate flavor that made for a great start to the meal. The restaurant has a warm, inviting atmosphere, and the service was friendly and attentive. I'd definitely come back the next time I'm in San Diego.
1/23/26: When you don't want the night to end with your donna bellissima, your ADHD kicks in, and you remember the Cheese Wheel Tik Tok you sent her the night before! My cute co-pilot maps the spot. It's on the way home! Il destino! And as luck would have it, we find parking in front of the restaurant 3 minutes prior to free parking! Molto Bene! The Drinks - a chardonnay for my darling diva & a Spice Up Your Life for me. Keeping the tequila theme going from our prior adventure. Fantastico! The Food - we started off with the truffle fries while we waited for the main event! Cheese Wheel! Our server went over the specials & we decided on the gluten free Fusilli Pesto with chicken. Just as our drinks are half done & we plate watch (like people watching, but with food), the Cheese Wheel makes its entrance! All hail the Cheese Wheel!!! Our wheel man began to whip out a little torch & slice off pieces of cheese like an artist. Presentation points for thee, signore! As he dropped in the pasta & chicken, we gave him the "More cheese!" look that we desire artery clogging quantities of parmigiano! We were not disappointed. Deliziosa! The Dessert - My confectionary cutie chose the dessert, Crème Brûlée. It was almost as delicious as my date. And why not have a French dessert at an Italian restaurant! This is San Diego! But yes, definitely a hit! Bello! The Staff - I cannot say enough about these lovely people. From our hostess who said "15 minute wait" & sat us in 10, with last minute reservation, on a Friday night. To the servers & wait staff who practically anticipated our next move. I don't think I ever saw my water glass empty. Bravissimo! TL:DR Good things happen when you are with good company.

We celebrated my daughter's 14th birthday here a few months ago. Food was delicious. Service was great. And the atmosphere was "warm and welcoming," with a cozy vibe reminiscent of a "small quaint town in Italy". Perfect for any occasion! We will definitely be back! Reservations here are very easy to make beforehand on their website to ensure that you get a table. The restaurant was beautifully decorated with both indoor & outdoor seating. The server was kind enough to give great recommendations & answer any questions we had. One of the best Italian restaurants I have tried in San Diego! * Calamari - 9.1/10 (so delicious, addicting, & juicy! the seasoning on the crust was yummy & after adding some lemon on top, it made it the perfect combination. the chipotle sauce went very well with the calamari, & the acidity from marinara sauce was a nice balance. a huge plus was the big serving. i just wish it was a bit more crunchy) * Half Rigatoni Ragu Della Nonna - 8.5/10 (i love the chewiness from the texture & size of the rigatoni, it was the perfect thickness. the beef was seasoned well & i appreciated the healthy amount of it in the sauce. a very delicious staple red sauce pasta) * Pappardelle Al Brasato - 9.4/10 (one of the best pastas i have ever had. the thickness of the pappardelle was the perfect size & had amazing chewiness. the truffle cream sauce had a unique flavor that went very well with the short rib. the short rib was so tender & tasted very familiar, maybe a fusion from a different cuisine. i would maybe add a bit more salt, but nonetheless it was delicious. our server recommended this one, & may i add, you must try this dish!) read more

Absolutely no regrets choosing this spot for our Christmas dinner. I went with the prix-fixe menu--Calamari Rings, Cheesewheel Pasta, and Limoncello Cake--while my husband chose the Spaghetti Carbonara. From the warm, attentive service to the beautifully prepared dishes, every moment felt truly worthwhile. We sat outside coz we came with our fury baby, and provided with enough warm by the outdoor heater. The entire experience was seamless, memorable, and nothing short of perfect. read more

Walked in with a group of 5 on a Monday night and got seated immediately. It got packed throughout the night. Only complaint was that entree took awhile to come out. But I think they emphasize on taking ur time between each dish. For appetizers we started with calamari, fried burrata, truffle fries, and fiori di zucca. All delicious. For the pasta we ordered the vodka pasta, pesto, carbonara, cacio e pepe and chicken parm. Each dish was flavorful. I think my fav was the pesto and vodka pasta. The restaurant is cozy and the portions are huge!! We all had left overs to bring home. read more

This place is absolutely adorable -- the moment you walk in, you can feel the charm. Like most great Italian restaurants, they clearly care about every little detail. The decor is stunning, the lighting is warm and cozy, and the whole space feels thoughtfully put together. The staff is friendly and attentive without being overbearing, which makes the experience even better. The drinks are amazing (definitely crafted with care), and the food is chef's kiss! The food is fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. You can tell there's pride behind every dish. SAVED BY SERVICE! You ever get into trouble for doing something illegal , but then as your about to get into arrested the cops let you go because they know your father... we'll in a nutshell you hat describes my experience at RustiCucina. I will spare you the details on the arrest, but in this case the "Father" was the wonderful servers waiters mangers ect. Who with so much joy and laughter served with excellence humility and joy!! I mean seriously and it wasn't fake either. At one point. I saw two waitresses in the corner hugging and looking at all the tables like "oh how we love it here" hahah Oh wait the foooood..... If you go order 5 order of the zucchini blooms!! They are truly magical. I asked the owner (who is also a super nice guy, brought out or meatballs himself) I asked him how do you make these... and which he replies "I don't know... they chief?" We came in around 6PM on a Saturday, and it was pretty empty since they open at 4. I had gotten a reservation just in case, but we were able to be seated immediately without it! The interior of the restaurant is super cute and perfect for a date night or slightly upscale night out with friends. The menu online is incorrect or maybe they have a specific lunch menu, but it was not the menu with the memes on them (lol). The actual menu was not that much different, but we had to take a bit of additional time deciding on what we wanted based on this new menu. Once we were ready, it was a bit hard to get our waiter's attention despite it being so empty. Everyone seems to be friends, and especially since it was so empty - so they all seemed to be very relaxed and chatting. We ordered the gnocchi, fettuccine pesto, and brussel sprouts. The pasta was yummy and filling (we both had leftovers). Nothing really stood out to me about the pasta, it was standard to me. Nothing bad but nothing great. The real standout during this meal was the brussel sprouts. I think the balsamic glaze + what I believe are dates made it so so so addictive. I usually don't like brussel sprouts, but it was so not bitter at all!! I'd come here again just for those. read more
Come for the appetizers and some of the desserts. Had an early dinner (5p) here with a large group on a weekday. Service was attentive. Appetizers Caesar salad - simple but flavorful Crispy burrata - tasted good but could have used more than 3 crostini for the amount of burrata it came with. At least double but triple is more ideal. Mediterranean salad - very fresh and flavorful Calamari - fried well with good flavor Entrees Mixed reviews all around. First, my order was messed up but they did remake it and leave the incorrect order for the table to share. I ordered bucatini with salsaccia cinghiale (wild boar sausage, mushrooms, parm) but they brought out fettucine. Not a big deal, I told them I would eat it. But they did remake it. I was happy once I tasted both because the bucatini version was way better than the fettuccini which was mushy. One person ordered the filet medium rare but it was overcooked. Another person ordered the carbonara but the guanciale was undercooked and they didn't end up eating much of the food at all. At least they took it off the tab. Similarly for someone else who ordered the cacio e pepe. Short rib pasta was good. Desserts Limoncello cake - definitely the best dessert. Great flavor and not overly sweet. Molten chocolate cake - I personally did not try this but everyone liked it. Cannoli - hard to share Tiramisu - very large piece of tiramisu. I've had better but it was ok. My boyfriend and I went to RustiCucina in Hillcrest on a Tuesday night and had such a great time. The atmosphere was cozy and comfortable -- not too loud, just perfect for a relaxed dinner and conversation. The service went above and beyond from start to finish. Our server was attentive and friendly without being intrusive, which really made the night feel special. We also tried a couple of their craft cocktails and they were delicious -- nice balance of flavors and beautifully presented. Overall, such a lovely evening with great food, drinks, and service. Finally made it out to try it here after all this time. The fam loved it! The stuffed fried zucchini app was perfect. The fries were nice and truffle-y with a great crisp. The pastas were all delicious! One of us got the cheese wheel and it was fun watching them do their thing in it. All the pasta dishes were great and the portions were huge. We couldn't finish and had lots of leftovers. Too bad we didnt have any room for dessert! Service was also friendly and they checked on us and refilled waters consistently. Overall a great little spot to scratch that pasta craving! read more

The best place we could have gone to for Mardi Grais! Enrico, was our server! He was so kind, generous and attentive. He made us feel like family. His friendly smile made our night and we enjoyed delicious lasagna and aged cheese pasta that reminded us of when we were in Croatia. The house wine, red and white sangria were amazing! Went for dinner last night. I will give them a 3.5 The place is really cute and cozy inside. The drink I had was good. Cesar Salad was good. However my pasta meal lacked flavor big time. I had the short rib pasta. The actual pasta was very fresh and you can tell it was homemade. However, the dish as a whole fell flat. It had no flavor or seasoning. Service was just ok. I must say, I'm SO impressed AND THANKFUL for the incredible service & food! We made a prior reservation for a group of 10, and were promptly seated. HUGE shoutout to Marcello for making our night. Such great energy all around! Super attentive & thoughtful, checking in at the perfect times. He was very professional & clear about allergens, taking initiative to clarify everything with the kitchen. I've never had this smooth of an experience. He even offered us a cake for a small mishap. We ordered 2 apps, 2 pizzas, & plenty of pastas--all of which were scrumptious! I can't emphasize what a good vibe this place was, and how much Marcello is an absolute SUPERSTAR! Simply a great quality restaurant--food, service, and vibes are all there! Even though we were a bit late to our reservation, we were still welcomed with such friendly hospitality and got seated right away. We got the build your own pasta with pappardelle and carbonara and the rigatoni and vodka sauce. My personal favorite was the pappardelle carbonara because of how light yet creamy and decadent it was. My group of 4 felt like we were invited into a home for a home cooked meal. Would recommend this place for a humble yet high quality Italian meal! read more

This restaurant was absolutely fantastic. From the moment we walked in, all of the staff and servers were so kind and welcoming. Our server, Vincenzo, truly went above and beyond. We came in for a friend's birthday and he took such special care of us, making sure we were always satisfied. The team even helped decorate the cake we brought and all of the servers came to sing with us. We felt so welcomed and like we were a part of their little family. The food was also exceptional. We got the pane di casa for an app and it came with their fresh rosemary bread and 3 delicious dips. For mains we got lasagna, lobster ravioli, salmon, shrimp fettuccine, and cacio e pepe. Everyone was extremely satisfied. The food is high quality and made with heart. It truly feels like you are in the middle of Italy. The restaurant is well decorated, nicely lit with a dim setting, and offers both indoor and outdoor seating options. Overall the place WOWed me and went above and beyond my expectations. Amazing experience overall. The pasta is clearly homemade, on the thicker side. You will definitely have left overs to take home, which you WILL eat. Suggestions 1. The gnocchi is like beautiful bite sized clouds. They are so light and at the same time creamy. I am not generally a gnocchi fan cause it's usually a little too much dough for me, but this one was different. 100% mush. 2. The table side cheese wheel pasta was cool. Not the best of them., but the experience is cool. 3. The brussel sprouts are to die for with little perfectly portioned sweet figs. read more
We came for Valentine's Day and got the $59/pp set menu! It came with 1 appetizer, 1 main, and 1 dessert for each person which was an amazing deal. To preface, we were not sure if this is how authentic Italian food normally is, but everything tasted bland to us. All the ingredients do taste fresh, but there is just minimal seasoning. The dessert was the best part of the whole meal. All the scores reflect our personal opinions and taste buds :) Appetizers: Fried Calamari - 7/10, It was crispy and delicious, the sauce helped with the flavor but again no seasoning tasted in the fried calamari itself Polpette di Nonna - 6.5/10, Meatballs were perfectly cooked, however the sauce lacked flavor and the meat wasn't seasoned Mains: Pappardelle al Brasato - 7/10, the sauce has a little more flavor but overall still fresh tasting and minimal, there was a good amount of short rib Short ribs w/ Mashed Potatoes - 5.5/10, the short ribs were super tender, mashed potatoes were plain and the sauce was bland Dessert Tiramisu - 11/10, The best thing ever! We loved this and ate it so quickly, it was delicious Limoncello cake - 9/10, This was great and wasn't too sweet, the lemon tasted great Service was good as well with the waiter checking up on us often, not sure if we would come back due to the food but the ambiance is great for a date night! read more

What's the price range for the cheese wheel pasta?
I think it depends on how many people. The menu has market price. We were 6 people and just wanted to try it as an appetizer. I believe it was $40.
Is there a corkage fee if we bring our own wine?
