I feel sorry for the other Italian Restaurants that have to compete with Sono. Nice beautiful restaurant that doesn't feel crowded, incredibly cheap parking garage a block away, huge delicious portions at reasonable prices and great service from our waitress Ashley, to one of the owners, Ocean, on down. The Bruschetta Porchetta appetizer was a massive amount of 36-hour cooked pork that melted in your mouth. The Casarecce Sono filled your stomach and hit every taste bud on the way. The Papparadelle Cinghiale was covered in chunky, delectable meat sauce and perfectly cooked noodles. I hate to call their Tiramisu just that because it's different and better than any I've ever tasted. It's a huge serving portion that's covered in sweet, home-made whipped cream and mascarpone over soaked cakes and chocolate creams. Their collection of pizzas is beyond unique with their ingrediants AND during their Happy Hour, you can get the SAME SIZE pizzas for half-price. Insane! Do yourself a favor and go once and you'll be back over and over again. Promise! read more

We had a dinner reservation for 6 on a Thursday, and we were seated immediately upon checking in. The first thing I noticed was the nice ambiance, with moody lighting and some unique decor pieces such as the coffee table by the entrance. We ordered a couple of dishes to share family-style with the table. CONCHIGLIONO PICCANTI: Loved the large shell shape! Make sure to give everything a good mix first. Cooked to the perfect texture, so it was fun to eat with a nice chew. We paid $10 extra for the sausage add-on, but only got a teeny tiny bowl of sausage. Recommend skipping the add-ons because it's not worth the cost at all. SPECIAL (SHORT RIB PASTA): The pasta was again perfectly cooked and just the right chewy texture. There was a good amount of meat included too! Pricey though, and while it was good, I honestly don't think it was worth the price. PIZZAS: We ordered the Sono and Regina pizzas. Both were alright but neither really wowed me...I feel like it's hard to mess up pizza though. Neither really left an impression and I wouldn't be sad if I never got to try these again.  We each ordered a drink and questioned whether there was any alcohol in them. Out of the 6 of us, we only tasted the slightest hint of alcohol in one of my friend's drinks. It's possible the alcohol was just really well masked, but I finished my whole drink and didn't feel the buzz. Not sure if they just use way less alcohol than normal in their cocktails, but I'd probably stay away from their drinks if you're looking for any kind of buzz. They were tasty at least. Overall, enjoyed the pastas, but not so much the pizzas and drinks. Be prepared to pay a decent amount for what you're getting; I'd say you're paying more for the ambiance since the value of the food and drinks isn't really there. I wouldn't be opposed to coming back here if a friend really wanted to, but I don't think I'd choose to come here myself, or specifically recommend it to anyone. read more

The ambiance at Sono is beautiful and the service was great, but unfortunately the food was very disappointing. I ordered the steak and was honestly shocked when it came out as two small skewers. For the price, the portion and presentation felt very underwhelming. Overall, the food just didn't taste like restaurant-quality food to me. Everything felt under-seasoned and lacked flavor. The risotto especially reminded me of the frozen risotto from Trader Joe's. Which isn't bad, but it's also not something I'd expect to be served at an Italian restaurnt. I went to spend my anniversary there and they were very nice bringing ice cream in the end (the only thing that tasted good/homemade). The atmosphere is definitely the strongest part of the experience and our service was great, but the food left a lot to be desired. I personally wouldn't come back, and I wouldn't recommend it for the food. read more

Good food and interesting interior here! My boyfriend and I had fun looking around at the eclectic decor haha. On top of that, the food was really good! We came for happy hour (which is only available at the bar 5-6pm on weekdays) and ordered a margarita, chianti, pane della casa, and a sono pizza. Not on the HH menu, we got the conchiglioni piccanti. My favorites were the marg, the pane (really good rosemary notes), and the pizza! My boyfriend's favorite was the large shell pasta. Five stars to Sono! Great experience. We dined earlier 515 but the place was half full by 545. Lots of early dinners. The restaurant is mainly couples and groups of 4. A few larger groups but not many. The staff was totally on it. Our server was great, ready with recommendations and just pleasant overall. I started with their Classico, which is a gin drink with sage, tonic berries and italicus. The cocktail was refreshing and a perfect summer cocktail. We moved on to appetizers and enjoyed both the Bruschetta Funghi and the Croquettes. Both were delicious. I will admit the bruschetta taste better than it looks! For dinner we had the Conchiglioni piccanti and Casarecce sono. Both delicious. Both very different. The Conchiglioni was delicious and flavor forward, the sauce was simply perfect making every bite tasty. The Cesarecce was also delicious, full of flavor and savory. The sausage cooked to perfection and adding that extra deliciousnesa to every bite. We didn't make our way to the dessert menu, which I wish we left room. As they have some unique options. The ambience of this place is stunning. I fell in love with their stage-like dining-room area in the front, which is where I chose to sit. I did notice how they have a big family style circle table, as well, that would be good for a group for a birthday or something. Their menu had a lot of options. They had a couple specials as well, which I love because sometimes it's hard to find something on the menu that catches your eye, which was the case for me for the appetizer. I loved the salad appetizer. I can't remember what it was called , but I know it had watermelon, peaches, arugula, balsamic glaze and burrata. For dinner I had a really delicious pasta (pictured). Sono is the most recent italian venture to take over this corner (which seems to be cursed with all the turnover). However, Sono seems to be the most impressive and popular so far! With its extremely artistic aesthetic and robust menu, this spot seems here to stay. We came here during sunset on a weekend it was quite busy. Something that really stood out was how many staff members came and checked on us. They definitely have a healthy staff count and you'll never be left alone with empty plates for too long. The food was pretty good! We enjoyed our wine & spritz. The caesar salad had a ton of Parmesan (just how i like it) and the greens were super fresh. My friend enjoyed her papardelle. My spaghetti pomodoro was just average. It was definitely good but no different from what you can get in a grocery store. I would love to see them add more veggie options like Cacio e Pepe, Pesto, etc. It would make me more likely to visit again. Overall this spot is definitely worth a try! read more

Delicious! I loved everything we ordered at Sono. First off, the Fuoco (tequila drink with Tajin) was delicious. Leo served us and he was very tentative and made sure our table was always clear for the next drink or dish. The only issue I had with this drink was as the fact he suggested a different liquor, but wasn't transparent there'd be an up-charge which was unusual. I've never been to a restaurant where they don't tell you right off the bat and in the future, we'd appreciate that transparency. We ordered a couple of pasta dishes, the potato croquette, a salad and the flat iron steak. My favorite pasta was their special that night (a short rib rigatoni pasta), but the large shell pasta was also delicious. We added guanciale which added flavor, but made the dish a bit too salty in my opinion. Overall, the ambiance is definitely there at Sono. Great spot for a date night or pre-drinks/dinner before a show/night out. I'd like to come back and try more dishes on the menu, so I do hope it's here to stay. read more

Wow, the Italian food scene in SD just keeps getting better! Sono is a top tier addition to North Park! They're the new kids on the block serving up modern Italian dishes. Their branding and space are superrrr aesthetic. Tons of photo ops here! We got their Polpo Croccante to start along with four pasta dishes to try: Conchiglioni Piccanti, Rigatoni Bolognese Bianca, Pappardelle Cinghiale, and Casarecce Amatriciana. The menu is definitely pork‑forward, so our options were a bit limited, but everything still sounded delicious. We ordered the short rib croquettes, Caesar salad, the white pesto wagyu pasta, and the special of the night -- a short rib with truffle cream sauce. Food and drinks came out quickly. They offer wine, beer, and a few cocktails, plus a solid happy hour at the bar with good drink deals. Entrées are on the pricier side, but that's expected for a modern Italian spot. Every dish was flavorful, rich, and generously portioned. The standout was the short rib rigatoni -- creamy, perfectly cooked, and incredibly satisfying. We each ate half our pastas and were stuffed. They also thoughtfully boxed our leftovers and surprised us with a little treat for our anniversary, which we really appreciated and enjoyed. Such a sweet touch. We had a pre-show dinner here before heading over to the Observatory. We went in the early evening and the ambiance was very moody and intimate. I think it'd be even better once the sun fully goes down, so if you can, go a bit later in the evening. Our server Paulo was very kind and attentive. The service was great and the vibes were on point but the food was just average. The drinks were hit or miss. The mocktail with strawberry and foam started out fun and good first few foamy sips but then was too sweet and syrupy. The Dorado cocktail got better when the ice melted, it was a bit thick initially but not bad. My pasta Casarecce Amitriciana was a great portion but sauce was too acidic and noodles were inconsistently cooked (some al dente some much softer). My friends risotto with shrimp was delicious though. There's better Italian food in San Diego but this is a cool spot to hang. read more

This tiramisu is the best tiramisu I've ever tried wow the presentation... it had vanilla ice cream and the mascarpone is the creamiest fluffiest thing that's graced my mouth. Our friend wanted to try out Sono for his birthday dinner, so we booked a reservation on OpenTable on a Tuesday evening. I realized I had been to this location before, but another business was occupying this spot. We'll see if Sono stays around! - PARKING - Street parking around adjacent roads - we got lucky and found a spot right on the corner. Note any time limitations/rules! - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - They redecorated the interior but kept the layout basically the same. I wasn't sure if my memory was failing me but I don't think they had a lifted area in the front where tables are now. We were guided to a 4-top table right next to the bar; I wouldn't say it was cramped but some parts of the layout you'd have to let someone pass by before walking. Service was OK - at times we'd have to wait to try and wave someone down. They also ran out of 2 of 3 desserts so we ended up just going to an ice cream shop next door. - FOOD - Cazzilli di Brasato ($22.00): 2 pieces. The croquettes were nicely fried and had good flavor. Polpo Croccante ($24.00): I almost laughed out loud when this was set down at our table. I've had single tentacles served as an octopus appetizer at other restaurants before, but the size of this was just absurd, also considering the price. It was so skinny and small, I could probably fit it in the palm of my hand. It was nicely presented with the coulis and purees (which also tasted good), but I just couldn't believe the portion size. Conchiglioni Piccanti ($28.00): I immediately knew I wanted to try this one as not many places serve large shell pasta. The flavors of the nduja paste and pink sauce melded well and the cacio e pepe mousse calmed the heat a bit. The shell pasta was cooked perfectly al dente as well. My favorite of the night! Casarecce Amatriciana ($25.00): I really wanted to try their guanciale but didn't want to pay an additional $10 for protein, and this pasta already included it so we decided to try it out. The guanciale was nicely salty and savory as we'd hoped, but the tomato sauce was a bit too much on the sour side. The casarecce wasn't as well cooked as the Conchiglioni either. - OVERALL - Definitely a pricier spot for Italian food, but the flavors are decent here. Some of the pizzas piqued my interest but I'll hold off on coming back until another friend wants to try Sono. read more

The food at Sono in North Park was delicious, we had both pasta and pizza and really enjoyed everything. The drinks were also super good and well made. The service was amazing and definitely made the experience even better. The only downside was that the space felt very cramped, and when we first walked in there was a pretty strong cheese smell that was a little off-putting at first. However you do get used to it, it's not something that's a deal breaker. Just a heads up if you are sensitive to smells! Other than that, it was a great experience overall. I'd definitely come back for a date night or a dinner for two, but I wouldn't recommend it for bigger parties since seating gets tight pretty quick read more

We each got a class of wine- Moscato for my friend and I got the Nero d' Avola. Our appetizer was the Cazzilli di Brasato which were the short rib potatoes croquettes- so good! We shared the Rigatoni Bolognese Bianca which was wagyu ragu with pistachio pesto and that was incredible, and also shared the Dolce e Salata pizza, which was delicious. Sono is the latest restaurant to take a shot at this corner suite in North Park. It seems that every year for the past half decade, a new concept takes over the space. If curbside parking is unavailable, then try the nearby multi-level parking deck and walk over from a few blocks away. The inside layout didn't change with a horseshoe shaped bar in the middle of the room and enough tables to hold at least 75 customers. I sat at the bar where a worker provided the food menu and a beverages menu. About three dozen offerings were available for dinner across the categories of antipasti, salads, pastas, entrees, and pizzas. The prices were reasonable as I noted only one dish that was over $30 which is a rarity for Italian dining nowadays. A cart next to me contained potato chips which I assumed were a complimentary snack, but I didn't receive any during my visit. I started my meal with the Polipo Croccante which was pan-seared octopus with potato coulis and green pea puree. There was one grilled tentacle placed on top of the coulis and puree. The plating was beautiful although I do wish there was larger piece or a second tentacle. The Pappardelle Cinghiale was my choice of pasta. Initially, a different dish was brought out, but after I mentioned it was incorrect, the kitchen didn't take long to prepare the correct item. The wide noodles were served with wild boar ragu, baby portobello mushrooms, and sugo. I thought the meat would have been gamey, however I didn't detect that flavor at all in the hearty ragu. As an apologetic gesture, the house provided a complimentary slice of the Basque Cheesecake. The wedge was creamy and yet it wasn't as dense or sweet as traditional NY style cheesecake. so thankful to have been invited to eat here. we started off with non alcoholic dolce amaros which were def on the sweet side but it tasted like an elevated sparkling strawberry lemonade :) i appreciate that the cream top wasn't too heavy the cazzilli di brasto was sooo crispy it reminded me of hash browns and i loved the hint of truffle the conchiglioni piccanti was soliddd. the large shell pasta was so fun, i wish they had cooked it just a tad bit longer tho. the vodka sauce was flavorful and yummy esp w the chili flakes i liked the pappardelle a little bit more bc it was more al dente and the meat was SOOO tender and flavorful. the tomato base also added a nice tart taste the tiramisu was solidddd too i loved how creamy it was and they had a little scoop of chocolate ice cream on top. the chocolate cake was a little dry tho, but it was a unique twist the servers were also so incredibly nice and interior was beautifullll, amazing spot for your next date :) thankful to be a foodie and if im ever back in sd i will come back read more

We've been wanting to try this new restaurant and it delivered. Sister restaurant to Flora so we figured it would be good. The staff are very friendly which is a huge plus. The ambience is great. There is a raised area to your left when you walk in with fabulous animal print carpet. They changed a few things but the big wraparound bar is still there. You can sit at the bar with no reservation but I would def make a reservation otherwise. We ordered an appetizer and 2 entrees and a bottle of wine. Potato croquettes with short rib- tasty but could use a bit more short rib. Lasagna- full of short rib and sausage. So good my husband who wasn't even that hungry ate the whole thing. Casarecce Sono - tons of sausage and the pasta had a bit of chew and was al dente. So good and flavorful but light even though it was a cream sauce. They were so sweet and gave us a complimentary dessert- tiramisu. It was deconstructed and you could tell it was homemade. So light and good. We will def be back!! read more
