Nice atmosphere, professionally dressed servers, prices well, good portions. Older crowd. Good location.

The restaurant was only half full, we waited for an hour and 20 minutes for our order. We were ready to get up and leave when the server told us our food was ready. When it arrived my steak was cooked correctly but the flavour was really bland. My wife had chicken and it was really mushy and soggy. We were really not impressed with this place. I double checked this place before writing this review -- I honestly confused that it had a couple positive reviews. This place will go down as the "most randomly decorated restaurant" I've ever been to. Dead plants everywhere, plastic plants/flower decor too, a gate in the middle of the dining room, books on the walls, I want to think that there was a flamingo too (but don't quote me on that one). The menus looked completely dated and gross. Coloured napkins tucks inside of glasses that looked like they belonged in a cafeteria All-in-all, this place made me giggle by my complete shock with how it was in reality verus what yelpers promised me. ;) We started with Calamari which was tasty enough. The steak came next -it was a large piece of low-low grade meat. I ate a chunk of it and wasn't keen at trying to scarf down any more. Even with 1/2 litre of wine it was hard to have that meat slide down LOL I can't remember what my man had - but he ate his food and agreed that next time we'd pick a different place. The server acted like she hated her life - so it was our goal to make her smile and make her enjoy the rest of her shift.... not sure how successful we were at this. read more

My husband and I went to this restaurant for our fourth anniversary. The menu looked delicious and the atmosphere was pretty neat. We both got steak combo meals(mine with lobster his with chicken) and both were undercooked and taste burnt. Nothing on our plate was tasty so instead of asking for it to be remade we just choked some down and went home. It definitely was not a good end to our night and we will never be going back. read more

Stuck in time! While they recently changed their menu it is hard to see much difference. I used to be a regular there when it first opened but slowly it has been passed by. Service was good, atmosphere not bad but the food was generally tasteless. Escargots with next to no garlic, garlic mashed potatoes with no garlic. How do you serve steak without a baked potato option? Hostess does not greet you warmly just quickly tries to seat you. For what should be a romantic evening out or great family get together it falls short. read more

One of the strangest experiences at a restaurant. Our server was very nice and attentive. Then she was gone. And our replacement, the hostess, was useless. We were basically forgotten about. No one came over to see how our meals were, ask if we wanted more drinks or even explain that our server had left. Terrible customer service. The server at the table beside us was very good with his table. Too bad he couldn't have served us. Finally, the hostess came by and says "Will this be all together or do you want separate bills?" Thanks for offering us dessert or coffee or anything. I get it that you want us out now. How rude she was. She sucks as a server. The ambience and service from the wait staff was average but the food and service from management was terrible. I ordered prime rib and when it arrived it appeared as though it had been boiled, it tasted the same as it looked. The management refused to take it back or take it off the bill. Server was great but blackened snapper was terrible. It came with a side of veg 3 carrot slices cooked ok, 3 soggy over cooked celery slices and 3 raw, old mushrooms. Good portion size of snapper but the "blackened" was like red robbin salt seasoning. So salty I couldn't gag it down. Fish went back and 2 tiny PC's came back with a smidge of seasoning salt but server said another pc was coming and when it did it was like they poured burnt grease drippings on it to "blacken" it. Disgusting but this was pitstop from Calgary so didn't want to wait again as my husband had finished his fish n chips which were good. Would not come back. read more

My parents live in Calgary, and I live in Edmonton. Semi-regularly we meet for lunch in Red Deer (to save either one of us driving the whole way), and decided to check out The Rusty Pelican, as we had driven by it before. We drove in and parked, but never went inside. Unfortunately, plastered on the front door was an advertisement for the movie 'Vaxxed'. For those unaware, 'Vaxxed' is a fraudulent film produced by the anti-vaccine movement. It features debunked 'studies', a doctor who was charged with fraud and had his license pulled, and outright lies - absolutely nothing that is supported by medical science or physicians around the world. I refuse to support an establishment that gives credit and advertising space to such a movie. I don't know if the owners support the anti-vax movement or if they didn't know what they were putting up, but ether way I will never be returning. It is unfortunate that The Rusty Pelican doesn't show more care and concern about our children and society in general. read more

Went here yesterday the service was not great, she didn't seem to be able to remember to visit our table regularly. The menu has been reduced to two pages. You can add snow crab for $12 don't bother it's 3 legs that's all. And so not worth the money to add on to your meal. What kind of seafood reasturants doesn't have a crab or lobster dinner? You have to add it on to your turf. The food was mediocre at best. This use to be my favorite reasturant not anymore. Will not be wasting my money here again. read more

We went here for dinner with our 5 girls ranging in age from 10 - 20 for husbands 40th birthday dinner. We started with calamari, coconut shrimp, tuna tataki and salt and pepper wings. The waitress was AMAZING. Constantly checking with us and refilling drinks. There was hardly any wait for the appies. Supper was 2 orders of blackened steak, sirloin and mushrooms, tropical salmon salad, lime tequila chicken, capelli de angelo, and a burger. The food was absolutely incredible. Loved the atmosphere, loved the food and loved the service. We will definately be going back here !!!!!! read more

This was the worst experice I have ever had in my life ! I have worked in the serving industry Avery long time and this place was the worst service and food I have ever had. Let alone how awful ALL the food was and are server seemed to be on another planet because she was never at our table and are food took almost and hour to make. Than when I had to get up and get a manger to let her know that are food was not even eatable she than got in my face and argued the food was cooked correctly and there was nothing wrong with it's fishy rubbery taste (chicken) than when I said I would just have a desert they didn't even bring that! Than waited forever for the bill. I am now currently eating McDonald's because we left starving and this disgusting burger is better than this dump. read more

Save your time and money people, I have been going to this restaurant since it opened almost 20 years ago. Ever since 2014 the service and food here has been getting worse and worse! Tonight we decided to give it one last try before writing it down on the list of restaurants to never go back to... We ordered 2 seafood platters, tequila chicken, and lamb chops. The lobster tails on the seafood platter were over cooked (rubbery). The tequila chicken was disgusting! Had a fishy taste and a horrible texture, and the lamb was supposedly cooked to medium rare, more like blue rare! Generally I am not one to complain or write a review. This was honestly the WORST!!!! Experience of my restaurant outings. The manager came and was literally in my girlfriends face about how the "owner" said that the lamb was cooked properly, and the chicken was fine! My final consensus for the rusty pelican in red deer, is that the service is horrible, the food is disgusting, until the owner straightens out the staff from the servers to the cooks, I will never step foot in this restaurant ever again! As I said at the start save your time and money and go somewhere else. Plenty of excellent restaurants in this city that have great service and great food, the rusty pelican is not one of them! read more

I have gone to this restaurant for years the food is not bad for Red Deer which sadly doesn't have much to offer that is a lot better. The problem with this place is when something goes wrong which can happen to better places then this as we all can understand. The management which are also the owners by the way do not care about their patrons AT ALL. My girl friend and I are out for our anniversary she receives a chicken cordon blue that that is not just under cooked but raw the "manager" offers to do a deconstructed meal as that was the last chicken codon frozen they had, does not offer a discount a round of drinks nothing. Ok we give it another chance as the oysters Rockefeller are usually very good, we get two not just bad but rotten to the point of stinking out the restaurant, the "management" didn't even give us a apology let alone acknowledge the problem in a dinning room with only 5 other tables.Perhaps it's time for the owners to hire someone who knows how to manage and care about a business that can only succeed by caring about it's customers. read more

Went there on Saturday night with a group of 17 people, two tables. It was not that busy other than us, so service should have been a breeze as they had 3 people serving. Aside from the first drinks order we had to always wave to a waitress to get more drinks throughout the meal, when we asked for water we were pointed towards a tap on the wall around the corner with plastic cups.....our entrees arrived at different times, then our mains arrived straight after the entrees with no gap. They did not take away our entrée dishes, so we were left with a heap of dishes on the table. Our other table had to wait for entrees, theirs arrived after we received our mains and one main meal was completely missed. The other table had received dessert and we had not even been asked if we wanted any dessert, finally dessert arrived and as there was no space on the table due to entrée and now main dishes being still on the table, we had to ask if they could clear the table, they did this reluctantly....we were then given the push to leave so they could clean up, we were still waiting on one coffee, when we pointed this out they said no problem, brought the coffee, but in a take away cup...hint to leave taken we left.
