Never return! This place is a scam! We were charged $170 just to sit on a table and it wasn't even peak season. This was as expensive than staying in a hotel. The place was empty, so it makes no sense and all $170 for the table + 50 for a sparkling wine. We were four and stayed for one hours. We made the reservation online, we asked the table to the waiter and when paying the wine, big surprise: $170 table charge. This should be illegal!!! This place is a scam!!! NEVER AGAIN! read more

I came here for the first time and I'm sad I haven't heard of this place sooner. My friends and I had reservations and we were seated upon arrival. Every wine I tried on their tasting menu was delicious. We had great service by everyone. It was a very warm day so it was nice that they continued to provide us with cold water. The property is beautiful and the view from the parking lot is all picture worthy. Gorgeous property set atop a hill overlooking the valley with a variety of areas to enjoy. We did our tasting at the wine bar inside which was lackluster. However, our host was very nice & answered all our questions. She was phenomenal. Their wines on the other hand were just ok. Absolutely well made & drinkable, but nothing to write home about. I'm not sure if this is because we were just simply spoiled by the wineries we stopped at prior, but I was left a bit disappointed. Best part of the tasting - their port! This I can say is one of the best ones I have ever had. When paired with the chocolate covered blueberries they offer it is simply divine. Although this won't be a repeat stop for us - it is aorth a stop for the views & the port if you are into that....or I'd guess their picnic option would also be nice if you were interested in that. read more

If you want a picnic spot with a beautiful view DON'T go here. What used to be a sweet spot that you could bring a casual picnic to after you purchased some wine from Rutherford is a thing of the past. Not only do you need a reservation, it costs $30 a person just to sit at a picnic table plus you have to purchase their wine. I joined their wine club after a past tasting of their wines. The experience of being a wine club member was incredibly disheartening. They allowed personal information, including credit card information to get into other people's hands. Namely, Anna Cupp and Emily Richards called the wrong person and gave out personal information about myself and my account. Rutherford hill was the only stop on my Napa wine tasting, but it was definitely a good pick. the wines were good but the tour through the caves where they store the wine was what truly made it worth it. the guide was super nice and knowledgeable and the caves were something i'd never seen before. One of the better winery tours i've been on in my wine tasting years for sure! the place is super clean, and there's cute little seating areas outside if you're looking to lounge around before or after a tasting, maybe enjoy a glass of wine if you're allowed to (i'm not sure i didn't ask). all around good experience and would recommend stopping here if you have the time! This Napa winery doesn't worth $60 per person wine tasting! Its "Signature SelectTasting" offered a flight of 5 wines including one white - Sauvignon Blanc and 4 red - one Syrah, one Merlot and 2 different Cabernet Sauvignon. Disappointing that none of the wine were good. All were far too simple that lacked complexity or compelling aroma. The 2 relatively expensive Cab were too sweet, too simple, not smooth, not balanced or compelling in after taste. The server mistakenly poured me the 2014 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. I expected it to be better but it's also disappointing. On top of poor quality of wine, service was lousy and lack of useful information. The wine glasses looked really basic ( unprofessional ) and old ......We set in the outdoor picnic area in a hot afternoon ( this winery doesn't offer indoor wine tasting ) where there were not enough electric fans for cooling and ventilation. It's suffocating to do tasting in such an outdoor area! Overall this wine tasting experience was totally disappointing. I would not recommend visiting this vineyard if you do have some basic knowledge or understanding of what is good red wine. There are way much better vineyards in Napa! read more

We wanted to be spontaneous and try a new winery.... enter: Rutherford Hill Winery! Good value wine, with very friendly service, and great views of the valley. If you want to be more leisurely here, there is a small picnic table area where you can bring your own food to eat. They also sell cheese boards if you want to enjoy (small selection but effective if that's what you're wanting). The outside area has some lawn games too, which is nice for a couple of hours outdoors. I'd recommend this winery for sure! read more

We had not visited Rutherford Hill before and decided to splurge and book a cave tour. Our tasting guide started our tour 40 minutes late as they were finishing with another couple that wouldn't leave. The tasting guide did not know anything about the wines we tasted outside of what was on the tasting sheet provided to us. The tour was very disappointing, especially at $85/person, and the wine was not great. I try to leave good reviews when a winery is good, but this one isn't worth stopping at. read more

We thought that we would go to RHW for a tasting today. My friend was in town from New Jersey and has a magnum of their wine at home and asked if we could go. We did not have an appointment and thought that if we could drop in that they may be able to take us. We'd just left Etude and had a great tasting experience. Not one person at Rutherford Hill Winery greeted us warmly. A stark difference in comparison to Etude where everyone greeted us with "Welcome to Etude". We wanted to wine taste and have a charcuterie/cheese board. There were so many empty tables and seats with no one at them. RHW would not seat us because we were not members but we could buy a picnic table for $95. We refused, stood at the bar and tasted wine. I have come to Napa at least 2x a year and I have visited many tasting rooms in my adult years, I have never had such an amazing experience superior service as we did today. Hats off to Patricia! We came to Napa to celebrate my nieces 25 birthday and we found Groupon for Rutherford. We were more Excited to buy because of the chocolate pairing. 1st, I was running about 20 min late because we got lost. I called at my appointment time and let them know I was running late. They were very so nice and told no worries and to drive safe. We arrived and Patricia immediately greeted me with smiles. Due to sitter complication, we had my 2 daughters (9 and 8 years old) and Patricia included my girls to the tastings by bringing a some water and extra chocolate for my girls to taste with us. She went above and beyond with that little thought of my girls. She was very knowledgeable and sweet when presenting the wines. She took her time and made my family feel so welcomed. My wife, sister-in law and I came here for a tasting and were completely blown away. For $25, the tasting was amazing and it took a lot of courage to decline to join their wine club since each wine we sampled was so delicious! My wife and I usually prefer chardonnays, but after today I know at least I'm a lot more open to cabernets now - or at least for this brand. The level of smoothness and the effort into creating this wine is exhibited greatly in this tasting and the only thing I wish is that it came with a full course meal. The service was spectacular and Jimmy is definitely one of a kind. His service was exemplary and he even recommended us some of his favorite restaurants which we definitely noted as we like tasting some of the great spots around the area. Parking is ok and not difficult. Users of apple maps be aware, you can drive further up the hill and find parking. Our gps told us to park and then walk which is definitely not correct. The winery is located on a hill with a decent view from the picnic area. There are trailer potties in case you want to use the bathroom... keeping it classy. The $50+ wine I purchased tasted like something I could get a trader joes for under $10. I supposed I got a bargain because I didn't have to pay to use the picnic area... $75! We loved this winery a few years ago when we stopped for a tasting and used the picnic area. But upon our return recently with some family we wanted to show it off to, this winery was a disaster. We had booked the merlot mixing session, which turned out to be a private opportunity for us to mix some of their wines. The visit started out well. Our guide showed us the view from the winery and gave us some background. But upon entering the cave, his script was over and he didn't say much again. When we were seated in the private tasting room to mix the wines, we received no instructions on what we were doing or descriptions on the various wines. We were left to ourselves to figure it out. While we're all educated people, this was too DIY and our expectation was to get some direction. He frequently left us to do something else so we were alone in the cave in the private tasting room. At one point, the doors burst open and a tour stopped into the room. The older tour guide gave details on the winery and the room with his loud voice as our quiet private event was interrupted. There were no apologies for coming into the room and he easily could have quietly shown the room and told his tales outside. But his script said here was where he was to tell his stories even if someone was using the room. Or perhaps our merlot mixing wasn't important. We were also annoyed at the numerous fruit flies hovering around our table. I asked the tour guide what was going on with them since they kept landing in our wine and he shrugged and said it was just an issue of the season. We awkwardly each mixed our wine, wrote our labels and corked the bottles with the device he helped us use. Then, we had an awkward walk back to the main tasting room with silence. He had nothing more to say about the winery, ask us about our experience. Nothing! We used the restrooms and then thanked him for his time and left. A group from my work and I went here and we thought this winery was beautiful. It was definitely hotter here than the previous winery we went to. We were on a guided tour which Barbara led. She was very knowledgeable of the history of the place and the behind-the-scene works of the winery process. She led us to a cave which was cooler inside, luckily. She poured us some wine and explored the cave. It reminded me of a nuclear shelter and we found out that there was a lot of history here such as a tv show episode filmed inside. Toward the end, we had more wine - a desert wine. You could also be a member here and they would give you free bottles of wine and free wine tasting for you and family & friends. read more

What a lovely property! Whether here to tour the vineyard, eat a picnic lunch at one of their beautiful picnic grounds high up overlooking the valley, or to attend an event in their "wine cave", this winery does it right. I attended a wedding here about a year ago in their "wine cave" and I had a second chance to go again on this trip. While the picnic grounds are lovely, the wine cave is a really unique place to have an event. They take care of the catering and arrange a huge array of wines to go with your dinner (on my recent visit we had 4 wines out on the picnic grounds and 7 more in the wine cave) The tables are decorated with large flower strewn candelabras and the whole place has a bit of a romantic yet almost spooky atmosphere. There is also live music provided by a guitar player that echos off the walls. The odd thing is that I know the caves have a temperature of about 62 degrees inside them -yet for both of my events, there were varying temperatures. For the wedding- all the women were freezing so I suggested that everyone bring sweaters on this visit. Yet on this visit- it was hot and humid in the caves which was a little stifling. So while I wish I could be more help- I am still going to suggest a wrap ladies as when it was cold- it was cold and damp! Not sure who they use to supply the food but it was excellent. We started with a watermelon and feta salad, moved on to a gnocchi pasta dish and had salmon and strip steak as our entree. Each course was perfectly prepared. And if you are looking to stay in the area- my favorite hotel and restaurant in Napa (Auberge de Soleil) is right next door. Lots of vineyards in Napa. But for something out of the ordinary- veer off the main path and check this out. The service is great, the wines delicious and the views just can't be beat! read more

This was my first trip back to RHW in 20 years. The distinctive barn-like tasting room is still there but the entire property has been greatly upgraded. I liked the opportunity to sit outside and have a nice leisurely tasting. Our pourer was very eager to serve but was young and the comments seemed a bit scripted with no real depth of understanding. I have no doubt the guy will be a superstar with a little time. They do tremendous volumes here and the Merlot (their featured wine) is something I grab at Safeway on a regular basis but the smaller lot wines were really a cut above. As many of the Napa wineries do, the push the wine club pretty hard but luckily they fell just short of bordering on harassment. They offer a full line of wines but if you love Merlot, RHW should be on your "must" list. read more

Second on our tour of Napa, Rutherford was a great place to stop. We were fresh off a very corporate experience at another vineyard and this definitely brought us back a bit. Driving up is a little confusing as it's a long uphill road and there are limos and tour buses all over the place. One quick stop in the restaurant parking lot to show off my three-point turn skills and we're at the visitors building. Way different than I expected. Just an enormous wooden structure. Very pretty though with a nice patio and bar area outside. Walking into this building is awesome because the doors are so insanely cool. Huge, 20 foot doors make me feel like I'm walking into a castle. Anyway. Onto the wine. We shared one of their tastings. The price was reasonable and both bartenders that were pouring were quite nice. The wine didn't blow us away but they were generally pleasant and healthily poured. There was an extra port tasting thrown in that was paired with chocolates. Very nice treat. We didn't have time to go on the vineyard tour, which we would have liked to do had we gotten their earlier. The price was a bit more than the tour/sales pitch at the previous vineyard but at least they gave you the amount as credit towards a wine purchase at the end. read more

Anyone who has planned a Napa wine tasting trip knows that group reservations are extremely difficult to make and prohibitively expensive. When did $50 tastings become the norm? For our group of mostly non-drinkers, that would have been a waste of money. Instead, I reserved two picnic tables at Rutherford Hill and brought snacks for our party of 14. There was a minimum tab of $150, which came out to 3-4 bottles of wine. Pretty reasonably priced if you ask me. We all loved the rich, deep Malbec and we paired it with dark chocolates, cheese, and crackers. It was such a relaxing way to enjoy our leisurely afternoon. read more

-Not organized. Our table was not ready after we arrived at 3:30pm. Took another 10-15 minutes before we were seated which leaves us less time before winery closes at 5pm. -Our order of cheese and charcuteries was not brought out til we asked. Server was not aware that is part of our order nor knew what we ordered with the reservation so initially brought out the wrong one. The cheese in the container was mostly good but the meat tasted stale. A big piece of cheese still has the paper/plastic wrap on it. -The environment felt lackluster, poor ambiance. The front entrance was not welcoming or obvious to spot because tents were in front of it. Only saw 2 people working, a receptionist and a server. The table was inside a tent/canopy in front of the building which has no view and didn't feel like a winery. To have spent $150 on this reservation, we did expect more than just getting 5-1 ounce pours of different bottles of wine. I will say that the wine is good but everything else was a bad experience. We returned on 11-1-2018 this time as wine club members and participated in the Cave tour again, it had changed, but for the better. Beautiful view once you park. On a hill. Hidden behind the commercial roads of Napa. Simple. Once we walked into the tasting room, we navigated ourselves to their small wine tasting bar. They handed us a couple menus and we went off and away to our tasting adventures. Definitely good reds. Our favorite was the cabernet sauvignon. Rich, full bodied, dark fruits. At the end we tried their brandy port. I don't like port personally, but when they gave us chocolate covered blueberries to eat after every sip of port, the chemistry between the buttery sweetness of port and the chocolates made the port taste less strong, more palatable. Rutherford Hill is generous with their wine pours and will give you a few extra tastings of their fine wines. Out of all the wine tours we went to, this was by far the favorite. We went to two others before this, Robert Mondavi (I wanted to see this because I went to UCD and we have our performing arts center named after him), and the castle. Got there just in time for the last tour of the day. Our tour guide was Jesus and he was great! Very charming and charismatic. We started off on the tour and it was a little warm outside so he tried to keep us in the shade. We the. Went to see the cave that all the wine was in and when we had the tastings he was veryyyyy generous with the pours. Just what I like ;). We ended our tour back to where we started where we tried a 10 year old merlot. All of the wine was great and I don't even usually like red win.
