I went in for a late lunch around 2 on a weekday and though there weren't many people dining, service time was atrocious. I was seated immediately, but watched servers circle, looking at me but not ever greeting my table or take drink orders for about seven minutes. Then, when I was ready to order and closed my menus it was nearly another 10 minutes before someone came to wait on me. They were a different server than the one who brought our drinks and was very curt. They did not greet us, simply asked what we wanted to eat. I chose the medditerranean appetizer plate which was humus, pita, tabboulleh, olives and baba ganoush. Simple, I'm sure all but the pita which was toasted was pre-made and my partner got a fruit plate, and yet it took nearly 20 minutes to arrive at my table. Having already been here almost an hour and just now beginning to eat I was feeling perturbed. I had finished my drink long before my food arrived and it was not replaced nor was there any offer for a second my whole meal. When I finished, I pushed my plate to the center of the table to signify I was done and again, servers just sort of meandering around. I sat here for 10 minutes, making eye contact with my server and even saying "excuse me, miss?" as,she walked by my table but she pretended to not hear me (or didn't hear me) and continued on. I eventually was able to flag down another server for a box for my leftovers and she immediately appeared within two minutes with the bill. I handed her my card before she could set it down and disappear again, beyond ready to leave. The food was delicious, I thoroughly enjoyed the baba ganoush especially and found the quinoa tabboulleh refreshing and inventive, but the service was so atrocious I don't think i could bring myself to return. read more

Very rude hostess. Awkward waitress. Order missing a specific request. Food super mediocre, lots of it just looked cheap. It truly is a cafe: it's almost like a step up from diner food. The aesthetic of this place is great. I ordered the salmon dish and was sadly disappointed. The salmon was over cooked and bland. The food presentation was non existent. I was disappointed. Went here a few months ago with a fellow vegan, and I was hoping it would be similar to "Melt". (It was actually nothing like it, by the way.) We thought they would have extensive vegan options. However, there were no vegan cheese options, and I only mention that because nearly all of the vegetarian dishes are accented with cheese. I ended up ordering a grilled bagel with artichoke hearts, olives, onion, tomato, and pepperoncini and paid $9 for it! So -the prices are kind of high for what you get. Also, the ambiance reminded me of a library, which I don't particularly care for when I'm going to lunch with a friend. I may try it again, but will likely order something else. read more

I would rate this place higher but it only goes to 5 stars Our party of 12 arrived on Friday night at 7:30. We did call ahead and they don't take reservations but said they would plan on our arrival sure enough within 15 minutes of our arrival we all were seated together. The bar is located inside the front door and allows the bartender to serve as a greeter. I see a few negative comments about that but it seemed to work. Does make it a tight fit near the door but wasn't a problem. The interior is fresh, colorful, very clean, and the use of the high industrial open ceilings has a great feel. From the time we entered the staff was very attentive from start to finish. With a large group there always is someone that is disappointed with something. NOT HERE! Everyone enjoyed their meals. The presentation was spot on plus everything is very fresh. Many ordered the homemade desserts that you should save room for. The next good surprise is when the bill arrives. No question a value for the quality and service. If you're reading this trying to decide where to eat this place should go to the top of your list. Only problem is its location is back off the street and very easy to miss. Thank you for a great evening. Many in our group planning to bring other friends and family to eat at this gem. read more

Love all the different options, the atmosphere, and the service. Perfect for any type of outing. Each person can order something completely different from the next. Meatballs and rosemary potatoes appetizers were great. The risotto cakes are not perfectly done. Their deserts are great. I'll be going back just for more Ooey gooey butter cake. Risotto with mushroom and sausage is delicious. Turkey dumpling soup-delicious. One of the best things is that the dishes aren't cheap on the portions. For example- the risotto had loads of meat in it as well as the turkey dumpling soup. read more

Restaurants with a toddler - this is a great choice for kids! They have a play nook near the door where you wait and boxes of toys they give every kid to play with that my two year old loves. She also likes the flying cow statue (so she calls it). Sometimes there is a long wait at lunch so it is worth calling ahead if that is a concern. Reasonably priced kids menus, the first time we went, we had issues with getting info on whether stuff (like pasta) had eggs in it (an allergy concern) but the rest of the times they seemed to know. The food is standard "up scale cafe" food which I enjoyed but all the other reviews talk about the grown up food. read more

First visit, possibly last. Overpriced mediocre food, VERY slow service. Ordered turkey sandwich and pickled veggies, club and side salad with soy ginger dressing. Friday 1:00-out of white meat. Tomato slices tiny, lettuce wilty. Again , service was SO slow. Felt invisible. $20 later still hungry very dissatisfied. Oh, salad dressing was inedible , bottom of bottle apparently. read more

The food was ok. Definitely not more than a 3 rating. Service is very bad. Maybe just our waitress. Never refilled drinks and water, we had to keep asking waiters from other tables for help with water/tea refills and even request another waiter to get our check. A hidden gem in a warehouse in Northside. We walked in from the cold to a warm and relaxed atmosphere. The space is visually stunning and the food is well crafted and original. So many vegetarian options to choose from. The sweet potato leek soup was outstanding, and I loved the spinach and squash sauté over brown rice. We will be back. read more

I was meeting a friend for dinner (around 7:00 on a Saturday evening) and she suggested this place, as she had been here before and liked it. I had never heard of it and I am always excited to try new places. The building and space are really cool and eclectic - lots of parking. When we entered it was rather confusing - 3 steps inside the door is the bar with seating for maybe 10 people - and a crowd of people waiting for tables - but no hostess. Thank goodness my friend had been there and knew the "routine". We crowded up to the bar and were able to get a drink and stood elbow to elbow with people waiting for a table in the small entry space. It was mainly an older crowd - I kind of like a younger crowd with more energy and excitement. We were finally seated after a 30 minute wait and it took awhile for the server to greet us. I ordered the Vodka Garganelli with chicken and it was good. My friend ordered a hamburger with chips and she was happy with her meal. My issue mainly is with the service - it was very slow and lazy. I just read other reviews for Ruth's and they mention a bread basket - we were not offered a bread basket.... I would have loved bread with my pasta. I drink a lot of water with my meal and my water glass was empty through half of the meal. When I finally was able to get our servers attention for a refill, she brought me a half glass of water??? Are they rationing water? The entire time we were seated we saw our server 3 times - once to take our order, once to deliver our meal and once to bring me my half glass of water refill. Someone else brought us our check. Now that I know what to expect - I may go back on a weeknight for dinner - I like a more energetic atmosphere on a weekend night. I am hoping the service we received was just a fluke and not the norm. read more

I live in Oakland CA now, and used to eat at Mullane's over 20 years ago. I was SO excited to hear that Ruth's was opening, and had no idea what to expect. I was in town, and had to try it out! Beautiful space, great outdoor patio, wonderful flavors, and such great options for gluten free and vegans, as well as meat eaters! We ordered the hummus, quinoa tabouli and baba ganoush, and it was AWESOME! We also had the bagel sandwich #4 with tempeh and sesame soy vinaigrette, and it was exactly the same as I remembered :) All in all, a great experience, friendly and attentive staff, and an easy to get to location with parking. It is, as others have said, cute and quirky, and the menu is eclectic. However, the noise level is very loud. The "quiet" label must have been from before it was open. When I was there, it was not very crowded but so loud that you could barely have a conversation without shouting. Service was quite inefficient, but I think this is because it has only been open a few weeks and I'm sure it will improve. Everyone was very friendly. The food was good, Mediterranean appetizer plate excellent, veggie burger excellent. If you are looking for a cheerful, noisy place with something for everyone--good choices for carnivores, vegetarians, and a dash of international cuisine, this is the place to go. My wife and I have been there twice and had great food and service both times. Airline chicken, salmon, vodka garganelli and ribs - all quite tasty. With the ribs (I think that's a special and not available always) came elotes (corn on the cob covered with mayo and spices - wonderful) and a very tasty slaw. This was our second visit to Ruth's Parkside Cafe, the first sitting at the bar with appetizers only. Both visits were a great experience but dining was extraordinary. The menu is creative, making it difficult to choose what I had to wait and try at a later date. We decided on the cajun catfish and the Parkside salad. Both were prepared perfectly with exceptional flavor and beautiful appearance. Highly recommend the catfish. And they managed to make a salad exciting with whole hazelnuts and homemade dressings (asked for both the sesame and yogurt dressing (omgosh!). Can honestly say we cannot wait to come back and try more. Another shout out to the service staff...excellent! read more

As a Northside resident I am too excited to have Ruths in my backyard. And, if I lived elsewhere I would make it a destination. The menu is eclectic, tasty and presented professionally and with a smile. Actually, more than tasty, it is obvious that these folks love good food and have taken care to choose ingredients and menu items that will make just about any palate happy. I have had the catfish, the Reuben and the spinach saute, all delicious. The wait times are reasonable (much better than Main or Vine Streets) and parking is right there, a piece of cake. Why head downtown when this makes life so much more relaxing? read more

We ate there in the first week it was open. We arrived about 7 and got the last table. Dinner was slow in coming but the waiter and one owner both apologized and said they were unexpectedly down 1 person in the kitchen. Fresh bread tided us over. I was very happy to have the KC salad again (from the old Mullanes) and it was very crisp and fresh. I had the roasted chicken with capellini beans and spinach. Outstanding, moist, very flavorful. My dinner partner had the lamb shank with shallots and beets which I tasted. We both loved it - best lamb ever. The decor is nice, it is not too loud, the art is interesting, the service excellent. We will be back - again and again. So nice to have Ruth's reincarnated restaurant in Northside. read more

Visited for the first time tonight with my husband and our 2 small children after a hike in Mount Airy Forest. We were exhausted and starving, and we hit the jackpot with Ruth's! It was very close to where we were and the food was phenomenal. There was an eclectic mix of diners, and I was hyper-aware that we were the only family with children (and young ones at that - 3 and 6 years old), but the woman who greeted us at the door was kind and respectful. She helpfully provided us with a collection of toys for the kids to quietly play with at our booth (cars, action figures, a toy elephant, etc.) My kids were thrilled to have something new! My husband and I leisurely perused the menu without them making a ruckus! Thank you kind lady! :) The server (Will) was friendly and upbeat, and seemed excited when we announced it was our first time as patrons. He offered help several times, gave us plenty of time to make our selections, and was so patient! When asked for his favorites, he directed us to the Creole Catfish and Grilled Salmon Filet, along with other popular menu items. We like to take server's suggestions, so my husband ordered the catfish, and I ordered the salmon. The kids chose the pasta from the children's menu, and we were served some fresh bread and butter while we waited. It was all so good! Fresh, properly seasoned and cooked, and my children ate more than they normally do, which is a miracle. The service was top-notch! I felt so at-ease and so happy from eating a delicious meal. We finished our meal with the in-house made pies (cherry for hubs, peach for me) and chocolate cake for the kids. (Yum!) Our server was even kind enough to split the cake in 2 for us. My children were delighted. To top it all off, our server gifted a small stem of flowers to my daughter after she told him how much she loved the fresh flowers on our table. How thoughtful!
