I had a dental emergency on a Saturday morning. RVA not only answered the phone at 8 a.m. but squeezed me in for a 9 a.m. appointment. (I left messages at seven other dental offices that claimed they offered emergency care. Nobody returned any of my messages. Ever.) I can't speak to RVA's other services, pricing, etc. But they get a five out of five for caring enough about patients to assist with emergencies (even when the patient wasn't a prior client). Please listen if you are going to use your dental insurance for any dental clinic: RVA Dental Care does not take all dental insurances and they are not in network with them. They all accept out of payment plans. I applied to shadow here however they never called me to see if they accepted me or not. Based on the lowest reviews that I saw on Yelp and Google, do not go here if you are willing to use dental insurance and can afford out of pocket at a high cost. Find another dental clinic that takes your dental insurance. And please pre dental students looking to shadow in the RVA area, do not apply to shadow here at RVA Dental Care because they don't call and reply to you. The front desk guy doesn't seem too friendly. The male dentists aren't that good and not too friendly. read more

Costs out of line and don't take insurance- unsustainable for me. I've received quality dental care here for about 9 years and was willing to pay the difference between what insurance reimbursed me and what they charged. (because they do not accept insurance payments directly and do NOT have negotiated rates with the insurance companies but do submit the claim for you). I decided to do some comparison shopping to see how much of a premium I was paying to visit this dentist compared to other good dentists in town. My wife goes to Va Family Dentististry and has always had a good experience. Here is an example of the cost difference: Limited oral exam: $57 at Va Family and $136 at RVA Dental. (my Delta Dental insurance covers 100% of the VaFam fee and only $81 of the $136 at RVA. So I am paying $55 more per exam out of pocket). I recently had a small filling replaced because it had fallen out. The procedure code I had done was a D2332, resin composite-3 surface filling. The going rate according to Delta Dental is $188-208 in this zip code. My cost was $463 of which I had to pay out of pocket $332. There is a $50 deductible on this procedure. $463-$130.50(plan payment from Delta Dental)= $332.50. So instead of paying a $50 deductible, I paid $332.50. To me this is an unreasonable premium when there are plenty of quality dentists in this town. Based on this analysis, I had no choice but to change dentists. read more

I do not often write reviews, but I feel compelled to warn others of the out of pocket costs expected with RVA Dental Care. I had a truly excellent experience with all of the staff, which makes their billing practices even more disappointing. As a new patient, I was told they bill insurance and was not given any additional explanation during my initial call or first appointment, nor did I think to ask questions. After paying a large sum upfront at my appointments, i received an additional $600 bill in the mail. When I called their office to question the costs, I was told that my insurance "did not cover as much as [they] expected". All in all, I paid almost $1,600 to get 4 existing fillings revised. Per a representative at my insurer, this should have been $400-500 in network and an estimated $1200 out of network... still $400 less than I paid with RVA dental. I do want to add that this note is at the bottom of the bills, which I clearly did not fully understand or further investigate. After reading through other low rated reviews, I realize I am not the only one who failed to ask questions about this "non participating" policy and paid greatly for it. read more

I too was told by someone on the phone that RVA Dental Care accepted my insurance. I had been calling around in search of a dentist that took my insurance, and I know they almost all answer the question the same: "We file claims with your insurance." I followed up each time with, "But do you accept my insurance?". Each practice told me no, and when RVA Dental Care said YES, I made an appointment. A root canal, new crown and a bill for $2,700 (out of pocket) later, I was told they don't accept any insurance. No need to go into all of the back and forth. I've been going here for a couple of years now, and the staff have all been exceptional. It's the friendliest dentist that I've had! I initially came here after another RVA dentist told me I needed a root canal. I was skeptical, so I got a second opinion from RVA Dental Care. They said that everything checked out! I often feel like dentists can be shady or misrepresenting, but RVA Dental Care is certainly honest and helpful. I went to this dental office for 2-3 cleanings and I will never go back. First of all, I never walked out feeling like my teeth were clean. The last time I went for a cleaning the dentist had "training," so I never even got an exam...just a hygienist "cleaning." My insurance information had changed and the payment didn't go through. Instead of contacting me to update my insurance information or billing me...they sent the bill to a debt collector! (Keep in mind, this is for a visit where I didn't even see a dentist!) I always pay my bills on time, and take pride in always settling my debts...not only is this practice by RVA Dental Care unprofessional, but it's extremely insulting. The whole establishment has the "good ol' boy" feel...I'm pretty sure all of the dentists went to Hampden Sydney...so if you're into that you'll feel right at home. I've been using RVA Dental Care for over a year now. I just had my 3rd semi-annual cleaning with them! Every experience at RVA Dental has been just as amazing as the last. From check-in, to cleaning, to the final examination, every part of the process is efficient, smooth, with RVA Dental's special touch of friendly, fantastic service. Alyssa is always very kind, knowledgeable, and swift during the cleanings; I have never felt uncomfortable or judged during a visit. I have seen both Dr. Lawrence and Dr. Friend during the final examinations, both are genuinely friendly and personable. I also can't say enough great things about the front desk staff; they are very patient, always have a smile on their face, and always happen to remember you when you walk in. On two separate occasions, I have had an unexpected dental issue (broken tooth and crown that came off.) In both cases, the office worked around my schedule and took care of me as quickly as possible. Between the friendly staff, the fantastic care and the flexible hours- this is a great practice. Be careful of this dentist. They will get you in quickly but don't take any insurance so they will bill you double or even triple what you would pay for an in-network dentist. They give you an estimate and say they will bill your insurance company but they don't tell you they are going to bill you the full amount with none of the regular deductions an in-network dentist would give you. My daughter had some dental work done here and because they didn't explain things correctly to her, she ended up paying triple what she should have. Almost $2,500 more!!!! When she called them, they said that they wouldn't reduce anything and she was out of luck. Very unprofessional!!! read more

Today was my very first visit to this practice, and I just can't say enough nice things about them! My visit to a different dental practice 6 months ago was, shall we say, less than stellar, so I (like a lot of people) was a little nervous about going to the dentist. I don't typically have a lot of problems or ailments to discuss when I go in for a cleaning... I just want to get 'er done and be on my way; today, however, I had concerns about a chipped tooth as well as a jaw injury that I sustained from (not even kidding about this) eating a banh mi sandwich (it was worth it). First impressions: the front desk lady was friendly, the waiting area was clean and comfortable, and AC/DC was playing on the lobby background music. All good signs. I waited less than 2 minutes before Jose, my hygienist, came to get me for x-rays and my cleaning. Now, I made it my 2016 New Years' resolution to floss daily, but even with the past 40ish days of (nearly) daily flossing, after 30 years of flossing "sporadically" my gums are still tender. So I greatly appreciated that Jose was thorough but still gentle with the cleaning and floss. He was so personable and friendly, too. After Jose was done, Dr. Patrick Lawrence came in to examine my teeth. I told him about my concerns with my chipped tooth and sore jaw, and he suggested several things I could do to alleviate my jaw pain. I thought I was going to have to make another appointment to fix my chipped tooth (mainly b/c at other practices I've been to in the past, that's just kinda how it went if you had another issue besides the routine cleaning), but Dr. Lawrence said he could take me immediately to fix it! He and a different assistant (Jen?) fixed the chip on my front tooth super fast, and it actually looks better than before it was chipped in the first place! They did a great job matching the color and he smoothed it out nicely, all while we discussed our favorite Super Bowl commercials from this past weekend. Awesome "bedside manner"! I also had some questions about Invisalign, and Dr. Lawrence took the time to show me several before-and-after pics of some Invisalign cases he had personally done and walk me through the procedure. All in all, this is quite literally the best experience I have EVER had at a dentist's office, and I will certainly be returning to this practice for my next cleaning and possibly for Invisalign, as well! read more

I went to see Dr. Jeffrey Friend at RVA Dental Care about a year ago to establish him as my regular dentist based largely on glowing reviews on YELP about his practice. My first question when I called to make an appointment was whether or not he accepted dental insurance. I was assured that the practice did accept dental insurance. I ended up needing a crown and a tooth implanted. By the time I realized the practice does not accept dental insurance, I was a third of the way or more into the multistep, multivisit process. The dental work ended up costing me thousands of dollars rather than half that much or less. When I mentioned to Dr. Friend that I had been told that they accepted dental insurance but later learned they don't, his response was merely that, "I have a lot of mouths to feed". I had this conversation with him twice, and at no time did he accept responsibility for the fact that his office staff may have misled - intentionally or otherwise (?) - me and presumably other patients about their policy of not accepting negotiated contract prices with dental insurance companies. In no way did I misunderstand what his office staff told me about accepting dental insurance Dr. Friend is pleasant and friendly and is probably a good dentist. Nevertheless, my experience was overall a negative one due to evidently being misled about their charges and having to pay more than I would have otherwise. I encourage anyone who intends to begin seeing the dentists at RVA Dental Care to be prepared for their policy of not accepting any form of dental insurance. read more

To start this review, allow me to take you back in time. I am an 8 year old with a bit of a sweet tooth and (in hindsight) not-the-best insurance, so needless to say, I didn't see a dentist very often in my early years, and when I did, I can reasonably say that the jokers that I did see were likely not exactly leaders in their field. I vividly remember one particular individual that either (a) didn't believe me when I said that I wasn't numb or (b) didn't care, and continued to drill despite my shrieks of pain! Obviously, I repeatedly closed my mouth as the torture continued, to which he responded by cramming a door stop (or something that really resembled one) in my mouth and continued to drill away. That was the last time I saw a dentist for over 10 years. I'm not kidding. Fast forward several years later and my dental situation reached a point where I had to do something (what ended up being 2 root canals). Thankfully, I had a "grown up" job with good insurance at this point, so I ventured off to find a dentist that also dabbled in psychiatry to remedy the scars (both physical and mental/emotional) of my youth. I polled a combination of co-workers and friends and found a surprising trend (5 of 20) that suggested that I go see Dr. Friend (as a side note, there were no other repeat suggestions in the remaining 15 data points). His name immediately had me at ease, and with testimonial data on my side, I made an appointment. At the time, his office was in a stripmall office complex off Broad and Libbie; easy to get to near I-64, and had plenty of parking. I was nervous as I was walked back-- a loud noise away from having a PTSD-like flashback -- and was seated in the chair as I waited to see the highly-recommended Dr. Friend. After a short wait, a voice rang out through the 80's music playing in the background saying "Nick, what's happenin', bud?" I looked over my shoulder and the first thing I saw was blue Dr. Martens with FLAMES on the sides. Yes, flames. I have been seeing Dr. Friend ever since. 15 years and still going strong. Dr. Friend was very appropriately named; a warm, genuine, and friendly guy that truly cares about his patients. He has an incredible bedside manner, is very gentle, and EMPHATICALLY tries to eliminate all traces of pain in his patients. What I particularly like is how he goes out of his way to explain, in layman's terms, what is happening in your mouth. I am taking my 3 year old for her first visit in a few months. The only thing that I don't absolutely love about Dr. Friend is that, for some reason, he is considered out-of-network (but is part of a partner network) by my insurance, which makes him a little pricey, particularly for major services (e.g. wisdom teeth). That said, I'd easily pay double to get the level of service that I get from Jeff. He is, literally, the best. read more

Came here almost two year ago for a set of invisalign retainers. Dr. Collie is professional, incredibly nice, and cares. He will give you the best advice for taking care of your teeth. There was a time I was really upset about the lack of transparency over the prices of the retainers, but in reality, a lot things are just out of their hands. When I first called to ask when their first available appointment was, I asked that question a few times. I was interrupted and did not have my question answered until I gave them all my personal information. I also asked if they take my insurance. They said they did. I made the appointment, despite feeling pretty off about the whole conversation! They called to get my insurance details a week before my appointment. I gave it to them and I asked will everything be covered and are you in-network? They said "actually, we are out-of-network in all dental plans, but we will go through a detailed estimate with you before any work is done." So basically they misrepresented themselves to me about their availability and coverage to get all my personal information in their system. They assured me they took my insurance but did not mention anything about being out-of-network for all plans. I cancelled my appointment and will be using an in-network provider. read more

Do not let the dentist and their assistants fake smiles fool you. They only care about how to get as much money as they can from your wallets rather than providing a professional and quality dental service. The dentist, Lawrence, is just a dishonest hypocrite and a fake Christian with a fake smile trying to have you pay much more than other dentists for services. Plus, Lawrence does a terrible job on fillings. They are very good at acting like they care about your dental health, but they actually do not. My first visit to this practice was amazing. I had sent them an email about their availability on a Saturday and I got a same day appointment in about an hour! I was only seeking a free second opinion. I saw Dr Friend and he went straight to the issue. Then going above and beyond he not only identified the problem, he went on to fix my freshly crowned molar with a little filing down. Perhaps it took 10 minutes, but the thing was, I was only there for their opinion, and yet they made the adjustment for free. It's safe to say there's not another dental practice in Richmond which would do this! I was just a little leery because it was my first visit and it all seemed too good to be true. Yet true nonetheless! My only disappointment was I later learned that they somehow don't accept the very popular Humana Medicare Advantage insurance. I can't say enough good things about this practice, and I only pray that they will decide to accept this popular insurance. I know they'd get lots more patients! read more
