J&E Modern Construction renovated both our unfinished basement and outdoor breezeway of our almost…read more100-year-old rowhouse in NE WASHINGTON, DC. They did a FANTASTIC job! The job included demolition of existing non-weight-bearing walls, new framing, insulation, sheetrock, ceiling; new flooring, doors, windows, overhead lights/wiring; upgrading the stairway to 1st floor; building "mechanical room" for boiler; plus framing, screening, ceiling, tiling back breezeway; installing breezeway fans;; plastering & painting; and other finish work. We did NOT need the full bathroom done; it was already done. We also purchased & J&E installed stackable washer/ventless dryer. The finished basement includes a guest bedroom with private back entrance and private access to bathroom, a small room to be used as a recording studio, hallway/general access to washer/dryer, and small sitting area at base of the steps. Breezeway now provides a screened in patio. Importantly, J&E discovered some structural decay in the brick support pillars and beams/crossbeams at the back of the house in the breezeway and were able to repair the issue quickly and attractively for a reasonable additional fee. While J&E was not the least expensive bid we received, the quality, timeliness, and thoroughness of their work was first rate! Additionally, the communication channels (via WhatsApp) connected all the team leadership easily and efficiently. The response time was speedy. Yair Delayahu spent considerable time assessing the job; his estimates were incredibly detailed & parsed out financially. Shay Ovadia, and Orlando were terrific in guiding the project, and crew member Oliver and his teammates, plus electrical/plumbing teams, were all tremendously skilled, punctual, courteous, and responsive. Upon removal, I noticed that the stairs were not only badly damaged (from a previous owner's work), but were failing in multiple areas when accessed underneath. This was no longer a home improvement project, but now became a safety issue. I contacted Jonathan on a Tuesday afternoon letting him know that we had a staircase that was in need of repair. I reached out to 10 companies (that listed on their Yelp reviews that they offered carpentry) requesting a carpenter or carpentry skills, but only Jonathan and another company indicated that they could repair stairs that were damaged and in need of repair. The other company was not as responsive and indicated that they were fully booked through the summer, and that they didn't have the time. After texting and calling Jonathan throughout the day Tuesday, Jonathan indicated that he would come out the following morning to assess the damage with one of his highly skilled employees. Jonathan and his skilled carpenter were timely and direct in what needed addressed. He indicated that we would replace 10 of the 13 treads, and that they would reinforce all of the stairs underneath with 2x4's and other materials. Jonathan and his skilled carpenter were not only efficient, timely, and responsive, but the quality exceeded all expectations. Jonathan's carpenter worked nonstop Wednesday (not even a break!) and finished ahead of schedule on Thursday. The high quality work was much more than we had anticipated, and the price was reasonable (considering the urgency and timing). I highly recommend Jonathan and his company. We plan to use them for improvements and projects. Top Notch!

I've hired them to do additional work in and around our house-- more painting, replacement of floor tile, and work on our exterior fence. Will likely hire them to powerwash/stain our deck, too. EDIT: I wrote a more detailed review here 11 days ago, but I got a Cease and Desist letter from a…read morelawyer representing Gust, so I took down the details they contested in the letter because I've decided I don't want to waste the time, energy and money, nor experience what I feel would be emotionally damaging to relive with this company in court. I hired Gust to install hardwood flooring in one of my rental units, which began falling apart immediately, without anyone ever occupying the unit (i.e., no furniture, just people walking through once in a while to estimate other work). I was told by Gust that it didn't need glue because it was a floating floor. However, the manufacturer's instructions were that it needed to be glued at the tongue and groove (which I verified after the install). Because that mistake was egregious, and because of how I felt about my interactions with them since planning the project in August until they installed the floor in January, I decided they didn't seem competent enough to come back and fix the floor. So at the point that I discovered that the floor had been installed incorrectly, I requested that they provide references that would prove successful work of this kind or that they subcontract to someone with references (though I recognize I obviously should've done that before I hired them). They ignored that request, instead asking that I meet with them at the unit to discuss how to fix the floor. In my opinion, that was unnecessary, since they had already admitted (in writing) to assuming incorrectly that the installation didn't require any glue even though the vendor's instructions were clear that it did require glue. They also suggested using a tape-like product in lieu of adhesive, but I contacted the vendor, who said that was inappropriate, so I decided not to allow them to do it. Instead of arguing this further with them and/or giving them a chance to redo the work (or possibly screw it up even worse), I chose to pay someone else to completely undo and redo the work they did. I've been investing in real estate for years and have dealt with many contractors. In my opinion, Gust Renovations was unprofessional and incompetent and I exhort you to find another contractor AND to ask for and thoroughly investigate references for any contractor you engage with.
