I left an honest 3 star review in February 2020 after S&L remodeled my bathroom. I detailed my issues with S&L. The owner contacted me and asked me to take down my review. A little while later a friend asked for a contractor recommendation so I looked up S&L, to tell them who not to use. But to my surprise not only is my review is gone, but someone named Gil has posted a review with pictures of my bathroom!! So moral of the story, don't trust the 5-star reviews you see in here. Our experience with S&L was frustrating so say the least, including them failing inspections, not following our instructions causing us to need to buy $1000 in additional materials, poor craftsmanship (crooked and uneven tiles, and less than 2 years later and we had to regrout the tile ourselves because it was done improperly), not completely finishing the job (we couldn't get them back to do touch ups), rudely demanding payment (even though it wasn't due until they finished). read more

S&L came to my house to give me estimates on re-doing a bathroom. I wanted a new vanity and to transition the one sink to two. I'd already replaced the flooring, the shower surround and fixtures and the toilet. All I needed was the new vanity. I'd priced similar vanities on Wayfair for around $1,400 --- with faucets and backsplash, with an additional $250 or so to install by a local contractor. The representative (whose name has been mentioned here several times as giving great service, so I won't repeat it) took one look, listening to my needs --- that I had already put on HomeAdvisor and told the phone respresentative ---- and said $6000 to $8000. Gave me his card and left. Abrupt. Obviously, the estimator felt like he was wasting his time with my small project so I'm wondering why he even showed up. I told the phone person what I needed. The job had little scope. I didn't use them AND he obviously gave me an outrageous estimate to just get the heck out of there fast. Phone person is very nice, but should not have sent the estimator to my house in the first place. Why didn't they tell me they didn't do small jobs? read more

We had numerous concerns about the work by S&L in terms of quality control, attention to detail, supervision, and overall competence. They made many mistakes in their work that either they didn't notice, didn't care about, or were just sloppy. One example is that the website for the deck boards that were used clearly states that nails should never be used with these boards. S&L put the boards on with nails. We had to point this mistake out to them and they then had to take up and redo the work. read more

I live in a condo in SF. My shower plumbing leaked into the wall and had to be gutted out. Ultimately, I had to do a complete bathroom renovation. Initially, I was working with a contractor that was recommended by my insurance. That was a contractor from hell. I fired that insurance recommended contractor and started looking for another one online. I spoke with 5 different contractors and all of them except for S&L Remodeling tried to rip me off. One of the contractors I met with even required me to provide them with parking. The price point difference among these contractors ranged from 10,000 to 15,000. S&L gave me the lowest estimate. Choosing to work with S&L Remodeling is one of the best decisions I made. There were some unavoidable hiccups (like inspection delay by the City) but it was smooth from beginning to end. Shay (the project manager) was very responsive. You can text, call, email him anytime. After thinking about a kitchen remodel for over a couple of years, we finally decided to go ahead with the project. We had spoken to a few contractors about what we were looking for and the price range we were comfortable spending. Although, I'm sure these few contractors we did speak with did fine work, we just weren't really very happy with what we were hearing, which was pricing, product selection and timelines. We then contacted S&L Remodeling out of Walnut Creek and spoke with the project manager Daniel, who by the way was extremely easy to speak with and he saw our vision of what we wanted to accomplish. As much as we liked Daniel and what his company had to offer, we still had to think about the expenditure and what value this remodel would bring to our home. After finally making the decision to go forward with the project, we contacted Daniel again to finalize the decision of what product and color scheme we wanted. He brought his consultant Amy, to finalize cabinets, counter tops and hardware selections. The wife wanted white cabinets for the kitchen, which I was totally against. With Amy's consultation we settled on off-white cabinets along with a gray-green countertop and a dark gray back splash. Amy was very understanding and knowledgeable in what we wanted and guided us in the right direction for the desirable end result. In addition, we wanted to replace all of the appliances, that Daniel said there would be no problem doing. We had to wait several weeks for the appliances to arrive so that Daniel and his team would install them along with the new cabinets and countertops. After finalizing a deconstruction start date Daniel's team came in on that date and started the task of tearing down the existing kitchen. I was quite pleased in the manner with which they approached the task at hand. Not only did they have to remove all of the old cabinets and appliances, but then they had to go back and prep/repair the walls for the new cabinets and their installation. They worked very quickly and efficiently throughout the entire project. Henry, the on-site Lead, kept us in the loop with each day's passing progress. Obviously, there were little surprises and obstacles along the way, but they were able to quickly overcome these issues. The project was supposed to take from 4-6 weeks to complete. It took just about 4 weeks to finish the remodel and we can't tell you how pleased we are with the final results! The one thing that was of extreme importance to us was the amount of constant communication Daniel provided throughout the process. I can't stress enough his diligence when it came to keeping us informed about the process and his follow up about things we had asked about. In the end, we are thrilled with the results. The work is beautiful and we are enjoying our new kitchen. S&L has a solid representative of their company in Daniel, Henry and team. We would happily recommend S&L to our friends, neighbors and family. If there is any other work that we are looking to do in the future, Daniel and S&L Remodeling will be our first call! We had a horrible kitchen that had been badly remodeled 35 years ago and had a terrible layout. I spent years trying to find a way to remodel it economically. Because of the tough layout and very old materials, I couldn't do an easy Ikea type remodel which I had done in our previous house. For our new house I met with a bunch of different contractors over 8 years but they were all way too expensive. Eventually I found S&L. They gave me a very reasonable price which was 20K less than the next lowest one which was from a place that seemed shady. I don't know if this is the way they always work, but for our job I was responsible for buying all the finish "displayable" materials and their estimate included the rest of the job, including the designing of the kitchen which was done by a designer, Amy, who works with a few kitchen suppliers. She did a great design and then I went with her to her cabinet supplier and chose the cabinet option I liked. She also referred me to economical suppliers for the range hood and sink. I didn't love the flooring or countertop options she showed me, so I found a different supplier and S&L picked up the quart countertops I bought and installed them for me. Amy recommended vinyl flooring which I was against initially but I'm so glad I chose it because with dogs and kids and leaves being tracked in the wood flooring I originally wanted would have been hard to keep up. This was of doing things saved me a lot of money because I went out and bought the tile, windows, countertops and the flooring etc. and then didn't have to pay 20% or more mark up. S&L picked up the things I purchased that weren't delivered to my door - like the windows, trim, flooring, etc. I actually liked the process of researching and finding the materials so it worked for me. Just make sure to know exactly all the components you need that make up finish materials and have them all on hand when it's time to start. I had one contact throughout the process who was Tomer. He was very responsive and easy to get in touch whenever needed. He interfaced with those doing the work, although I spoke with them with Tomer a few times myself. The remodel went quickly and Tomer had them come back and fix all the punch list things that it can be hard to get contractors to do when they are 90-95% finished. I believe they took before and after photos of my kitchen, in Piedmont, and it really speaks for itself. If I had the money on hand at the moment I'd have them redo our second bathroom. I did refer them to my next door neighbors and they are redoing their bathroom in January. Definitely give them a call to get a quote and ask to see their before and after photos. read more

It was an extensive job; a full gut remodel from the floor to the ceiling, including new electric work & subpanel, running a gas line, attic insulation, and new windows, as well as installing appliances, cabinets, sink, and countertops.
