We had an excellent experience with Gilor Remodeling Group, especially Jesus (project manager) and Arturo (one of the work crew). We've done several other home improvement projects in the past and had such a headache with the contractors and sub-contractors not showing up when they said they would, or not paying attention to details, so I know how rare it is to find a contractor you actually like! Plus, their bid came in much lower than the three other contractors who quoted for us. We replaced four bathroom vanities which seemed like a small project, but required more skilled work than we originally imagined - including redoing plumbing and moving electrical to accommodate the new layout of vanity, mirrors, and lighting. The crew was very careful to cover surfaces to prevent damage (and also avoid dust getting on all our things) and to clean up their tools and equipment at the end of each day so we could have our space back. Arturo did really stellar work and clearly pays attention to the small details, like smooth caulking lines and patching each little area of drywall and paint to ensure a completely finished project. Their communication was great, and when we ran into a few hiccups with how to best install wainscoting, Jesus ensured we were happy with the plan before the crew moved forward with it. I wanted a kitchen upgrade to be done within a 3 week time window (when my wife would be gone on a trip). The job: quartz countertop, tiled backsplash, "floating" 4' long shelf, new double sink & faucet; dual fuel commercial grade range with hood (which required running 2 electrical lines--a 110 & a 220); recessed LED lighting and repainting the room (which required a great deal of cosmetic prep work). I got bids from 3 companies that could do the work in that time frame. I usually don't go with the lowest bidder, but I did in this case. Or Heim (co-owner/project manager) is calm, knowledgeable, personable, flexible and reassuring-- he sold me on Gilor. (Reps from the other two companies were more anxiety provoking--talking about possible problems (asbestos removal?, the need for an entire electrical service up-grade?, etc.) that would drive the total cost through the roof. Or Heim spent a lot of time running down materials & presenting us with options which saved us a ton of work (when we did a bathroom re-model a few years ago, the project manager left us to do all the materials choosing/purchasing on our own.) After meeting with several contractors, I decided to hire Simple Builders, who had been referred by a neighbor. They had the best value quote - not the highest or the lowest - but what really gained my confidence was that Gil and his crew came out to confirm that a wall I wanted removed was not a load bearing wall, before making his proposal. My project was executed in record time, and was within budget - exceeding my expectations. The building permit process, which in Berkeley can be challenging, was smooth and all inspections passed as scheduled. Upgrading the electrical power to enable the induction range was a challenge. Initially, before the project began, Gil explained to me various ways this could be done and what the codes required. The team had to redo the wiring in several places - which required opening the ceilings in the laundry room and hallways. After meeting with half a dozen contractors to review our project, we decided to hire Simple Builders. Our project was remodeling a kitchen, master bath, loft bedroom, half bath and replacing flooring and painting walls. Simply put, Gil provided not only the best value quote, but also noticed details (like uneven flooring). He drove to us on-site 3 times (!) before we signed. It was clear that he took our project seriously. Remodeling in a multi unit condo building is difficult, as it is easy to upset neighbors and the HOA. Only once did we get a complaint from a neighbor about construction noise going into the evening. Minutes after sending a text message to Gil from Simple Builders, the crew was packing up and offered an apology to the neighbors. Very professional and understanding. Our project was concluding at the start of COVID-19 shelter in place. This was very difficult for us, as we had planned to move in without any other housing arrangements as a backup. We wanted to re-do our bath in our new house. Gil and his team were right on the quality of their work (electrical and plumbing). Our house was built in the 40s...had no crawl space they knocked right through the wall of our master bed to get to the plumbing. Then repatched like pros.
