It's my friend's birthday today and this is his new favorite place, so I went for my first time to what we're calling "shhhhhhh...donuts." As in: Joe: Man, it's so hot, and they're pushing me really hard at work, and I don't know if my front tire is gonna come in before.... Bob: [handing Joe a box of fresh, sweet, delicious goodness] Shhhhhh....donuts. The owner is Vietnamese, so we talked about being Vietnamese and why don't I speak it, and how long has she been open (6 weeks) all as she put together this bouquet of donuty goodness. No tattoos, no hipsters, no fried chicken, just a damn fine donutery. $9.00 and about 20 donuts and a handful of donut holes later, I think my friend is gonna have a fine birthday. read more

There are no better donuts in Austin, Sorry Mrs. Johnson and Ken's who are a very close second. These melt in your mouth when they are fresh from the fryer, and in the mornings, that's frequent, because it's a small shop, and they do a bustling business. The owneres are the nicest people you could ever want to give your money to. The husband had a bad heart attack/stroke recently but seems to be back on his feet and doing well. When I bring a dozen to work, I have to be discreet about who I let know - coworkers first, then select friends, or I lose friends. The best thing is that this is a neighborhood place that you can walk to, or stop at on your way to work. Old retired guys hang out there, working people, gangsta wannabes, non-English speaking hispanic laborers, local folks going through hard times - heck, police chief Art Aceveda has a signed picture on the wall. I've even seen encroaching hipsters there on occasion. I guess word is out. Everyone can scrape together change for a donut! And I tease them all the time about teaching me English, because I didn't know the word for "long john".. Oh, and they do kolaches and breakfast things, which they make from scratch. I've had the sausage and egg biscuit, it was quite nice, but not why I go there. But this is a donut SHOP. Not a great selection of donuts but they rule on the kolachies. However you spell them... Ive yet to try one. Also lots of breakfast options, pre-made burritos or croissants with egg etc... all the pigs in a blanket or roll you can dream of. read more

Best neighborhood donut place. My family owned a donut shop and bakery when I was a child so I'm kinda a donut and kolache snob and these are the real deal! Sunday morning donut run! Having read the great reviews about SH Donuts, we saddled up the scooters and headed out. Since we had lunch plans, we initially took it easy. I ordered the last long John, my companion got an apple fritter and we shared a pig in a blanket kolacheese (no cheese). Washed it all down with some 2% milk. We sat inside and watched a steady stream of costumers come and go. The owners were so sweet, funny and friendly; it was fun to watch. Then, we decided that was not quite enough because it was pretty darn tasty, so I got another pig in a blanket and my companion got the cinnamon twist. Washed down with more milk. Enjoyed the food and had been coming to this place for years usually getting it to go. Happen to eat there once and after finishing eating went to the bathroom. The owner started banging the door of the bathroom telling me to get out for no reason. Extremely unprofessional behavior and will not be coming back.They definitely don't want you to eat there or are welcome to use their bathrooms apparently. So if you eat there, get it to go. Dang, these are good donuts!!! I feel stupid for driving all the way to Krispy Kreme last week when SH Donuts is local, in my neighborhood, and SO MUCH BETTER. I got the orange glazed just because I've never had an orange glazed donut before, and it is uniquely delish. The donut part is lightly crispy on the outside and fluffy and delicate on the inside, and not greasy. I'm in love. Don't miss out on the apple fritters! I got one of those, too and it's light and crispy with lots of apple bits. They are so good the dog is simultaneously crying and growling at me for another bite. I feel the same way! Got boudin kolache and a sausage/egg/jalepano kolache as well as a glazed donut. The donut dough is super soft!!! All the chains don't get nothing on this place. We are visiting Austin for the memorial weekend. Stopped by this place for breakfast. My son was having stomachache and threw up. Holy crap this place is awesome. The apple fritter is to die for. Huge, crisp on the outside, soft and fluffy inside, and chock full of apple goodness. Love it. Glazed donuts melt in your mouth, and the cake donuts are amazingly moist and delicious. For those of us who love savory morning treats...they make delicious kolaches, as well as croissant breakfast sandwiches which are amazing. The croissant is perfectly airy, and the bacon is crispy and copious. The couple who own and operate this place are extremely sweet and welcoming. Yummy!!!! Is all I have to say. There is something about these donuts and kolaches that is so addicting and delicious. The owners are soooo very nice and wonderful. I haven't tried the breakfast tacos...I don't think that is their speciality. Oh but the ham and cheese crossaint kolaches and chocolate filled donuts with real chocolate pudding!!!! How good is SH Donuts? Good enough for me to create a Yelp profile just to tell you about it. There are donut shops aplenty in Austin, but one this good is rare. SH takes some effort to find if you're not in East Austin. (And, I'm willing to bet, not many Yelp users are.) You have to know it's there, and be looking for it -- and then not be put off by the fact that it's a spare, undecorated converted gas station. If you aren't, rewards await. SH offers breakfast tacos, kolaches, coffee, milk, etc., etc. A decent selection. But the reason we come? THE DONUTS. I'll be up front and tell you I have no idea what they do different. None. But whatever it is -- is simply incredible. SH's donuts are light, exquisitely flavored (orange zest in a donut!), and delicious. Oh, and it's something like a half dozen (more than enough for two) for $3.25. What a deal. And the nice lady at the counter always throws in free donut holes. A word about the proprietors, by the way: they're a Cambodian immigrant couple with a 3-year old son who moved to Texas from California (and, of course, arrived in California from Cambodia) to start this business. The American dream. The Texas dream! Some of the friendliest people you'll ever meet. When we've stayed to eat there, it's been a real pleasure chatting with them. And they make spectacular donuts. Their cinnamon twist really has got to be one of the best I've ever had. In addition to donuts, S H has got a wide variety of savory pastries including kolaches and meaty croissant rolls. But it doesn't end there, the offer about 4 kinds of breakfast tacos. The tacos are all pre-made (not pre-fab but earlier in the day) so they're not quite Taco Deli level of awesome (if you want Taco Deli, you should just go there already). But they're still good!
