The audacity Story time, Today I went to the original Round Rock location, downtown Round Rock, to buy my son's birthday donuts, It's tradition. Every year on his birthday he gets a dozen half glazed and half chocolate frosted donuts. Then I get a kolache and a dozen donut holes for myself. Well when I pulled up today the line was wrapped around all the way to Mays street. So I just followed the line of cars and got in line. You'd think that a line that long would take a long time but.... Round Rock donuts has this process down to a T. It took less than 10 minutes to get through that line and get my order. And those donuts came out hot and fresh. So did my kolache. Anywho, Don't let the lines scare you away, Just jump in and know they're going to move quickly. Also, If you're planning an office event or any type of event and you want donuts and coffee or kolaches donuts and coffee, Round Rock donuts offers a great menu for large orders and also they have a cake menu for custom cake orders. My wife and I were in the Round Rock area for a wedding. We decided before we headed home, we HAD to stop by the legendary Round Rock Donuts to get munchies for the road. For years, I'd heard so much good about them; it was about time to sample their goods. Since it was a weekday and a bit later in the morning hours, the line wasn't too bad. Watching the vehicles flying through the drive-thru, I could see that these folks have it down to a science. Order after order is being handed to their customers with military precision. We got a cinnamon roll and a fritter for the road, plus 6 donuts to take back home with us. The fritter was OK, I've had better. My wife's cinnamon roll was too huge to manage. It was definitely Texas-sized. The six donuts we took home were two blueberry cake donuts, two regular raised donuts, and two filled. Stopped by Round Rock Donuts while visiting the area. I've seen so many references to the orange colored glazed donuts and had to stop to finally try these. When you arrive there is plenty of parking in front of the donut shop. When you walk up you'll order at the window and they'll callout your order by your name when it's ready. The donuts took a few minutes to come out but to my surprise the donuts were nice and hot. These atmosphere is very easy going and laid back. Oh, Round Rock you had me at donuts. Round Rock Donuts has been around since 1926 and it's easy to understand why they remain a staple in the area. This place is legendary for a reason. I always recommend avoiding the drive-thru in favor of actually standing in line and going up to their walk up window because it'll save you minutes on the hour. A few things to knock out briefly: Their kolaches are pretty good, and I'm always getting at least one when I pull up. Their black coffee stands on its own. It's some peak donut shop coffee. Now the rest: Their donuts are so gas. They are bright orange, yeasty, and incredible. It's hard to explain what the difference really is between them and everywhere else, but if you try one of their glazed donuts fresh out the box, it's undeniable. Their cake ones are also fantastic. It's interesting to never see those get the praise that their glaze gets. As a whole, their donuts are still on par with most places' prices. They're not overcharging because they're popular. Donuts that are almost a breadlike consistency doesn't seem like a good idea but damn is it a fantastic one. Now back to reality, this place is fantastic. They have a good parking lot and drive in option which is what we opted for. We grabbed a regular and jalapeño kolaches, glazed and chocolate glazed donuts, a cinnamon roll, and a white chocolate raspberry latte. Here's our take: Regular kolache - pretty good kolache, definitely better than most places Jalapeño kolache - very good, took the regular and elevated it a few notches Regular glazed - good, a great way to get a taste for their donuts consistency for the first time Chocolate glazed - an out of body experience, easily the best chocolate glazed we've ever had Cinnamon roll - not good, maybe an off day but lacked that cinnamon flavor but glaze was good White chocolate raspberry latte - very good, sweet but not too much to overpower the coffee flavor If you are in the Austin area, or generally south of DFW just do yourself the favor and come down here, you won't regret it and you will probably write us a thank you letter.
