I came to Sabor Isleno expecting a normal dining experience, but what happened to me was deeply upsetting and discriminatory. When I arrived, the staff refused to serve me, and while I was seated with my translator, I overheard multiple employees speaking in a hateful and degrading way about African-Americans.
It was not just uncomfortable--it was outright racist. I heard staff members make negative statements that black people are "dirty" and were also using disrespectful, demeaning language. The tone and attitude were consistent with treating people of color as inferior. I found that behavior extremely discerning and unacceptable, especially in a place where everyone should feel welcome.
There was one bright spot: one of the ladies (the one who was able to speak with the bartender / help) treated me with respect and gave great service. She was the only person working there who seemed willing to help people of color. Because of that, I left feeling even more frustrated that the rest of the staff showed such blatant disregard and disrespect.
I also think it matters that I came there to spend my money like anyone else. I expect basic human respect, not racism or refusal to serve. This experience felt like a serious violation of dignity and fairness.
For context, my best friend's father--who is from Puerto Rico and who has been like family to me--has never treated black people differently. Seeing how I was treated at Sabor Isleno was painful, and it's something that needs to be addressed.
I believe the restaurant should take this seriously and review staff conduct immediately. Discrimination and hate have no place in customer service. If Sabor Isleno wants to earn trust, they need to ensure their team understands that everyone deserves respect, and that racism must never be tolerated. read more
