This is a cute spice shop in Viejo San Juan. I was interested in salt free options and they had a few selections which I bought. They have a huge variety of sauces, salsas, and jams. The hot sauces also come in TSA friendly sizes! I appreciate that they had a tasting station. I was particularly curious about the banana jam and my daughter has been a huge fan. Best best best place we visited during our souvenir buying day. First of all, RJ is wonderful. The right amount of customer service, informative without being overbearing. We stayed after to talk about art school and the Latino diaspora in NYC. Upon the walk in, it smells divine and music is playing. The store has a taster table with a ziplock of chips so you can try the salsas and jams! They also have a TSA approved under 3.4 oz section (which is GENIUS) though not everything was on there. But they ship to the states and we're definitely shipping that guava picante. Other favorite which we got was guava jam, jerk sauce, and mango pepper sauce. The seasoning were also amazing. Everything had great descriptions. The back of the store had the most unique items that make wonderful gifts. The other souvenir places all have the same silly little items. At the spice shop, we picked up gifts like: loose leaf tea, handmade dolls, embroidered dish towels, ground coffee, soap, etc. they also have mini gift sets with a little bit of everything. The smells coming from this place were wonderful. The young lady who took care of us was quite pleasant. My girlfriend enjoys good tea and she was able to find something which really interested her. This store is a gem in Old San Juan. i love that it is so clean and orderly and they make it easy to sample before you buy. I purchased one small bottle of the Sunsational Garlic, Savoury Ginger and Hot Sauce. Although I sampled all of them, I wasn't sure exactly which foods I would pair them with. Fast forward one.month, the garlic is 1/2 way finished and the ginger is close behind. I wish I purchased larger bottles! I'm sooooooo glad that I can order more online. I haven't tried the hot sauce only because I have 4 types of hot sauce currently opened and in use. Suggestion: I currently mix the garlic with the ginger and matouks hot pepper sauce. Yummy. Once Matouks is empty AND I order more garlic and ginger, im going to mix all three. I will then have three amazing sauces from the two caribbees !! read more

SUPER FRIENDLY and HELPFUL STAFF! There is a testing table with alll bottles and jars laid out. They also provide you with individual ziplock bags of cracker/chips to use for the taste testing. Everything is very hygienic. you are not dipping into anything (which I have always found very unhygienic). Here you are pouring from bottle onto chip/cracker. for the jam, there are plastic knives to use. while i was very excitedly taste testing and mentally tallying what i will be buying, i suddenly remembered that i am limited to the 3.5oz bottle due to tsa regulation for liquid carry-on. I was immediatley very sad. Then the nice owner/manager informs me that they ship...but how much is shipping?!...it is so expensive to ship anything right now. Well, it is ONLY $15 for shipping and the box can hold quite a bit! so we ordered 2 - 14 oz (FUEGO and the Yellow hot sauce) 2 - 5.5 oz (FUEGO and the Yellow hot sauce) 3 - jars ( 2 guava jam and 1 hot pepper jam) all the above fits in their $15 shipping box! I cannot wait to receive our hot sauce. This place also sells herbs and jams and syrup and many other stuff. They also have online store. This is an awesome spice store in the heart of San Juan. They have a great selection of spices, sauces, and scents. There are testing areas available to try the flavor and heat of different things they sell. In addition to food products, they sell souvenirs, perfumes, cologne, soaps. They support Save-a-Gato foundation. I highly recommend stopping in. They were decorating for Christmas when I was there. The store is excellent, and the employees are helpful. read more

Spicy Caribbee is a really nice little boutique type of a spice store where the staff is more than willing to give you all kinds of hints to spice up your cooking. They carry various spice creations of their own along with various sauces such as a Creole Green, Island Thyme, a Passionfruit Pepper, Saucy Tamarind, rubs, honeys, soaps and fragrances. As I wanted to prepare a dish of snapper nuggets from a recipe and preparation technique as was related to me by Chef Carmine of St. Kitts, I stopped by to purchase some Lime Orange Pepper; something I haven't been able to find stateside. And though I may be showing my culinary bias, I think mine came out not better, but every bit the equal of hers. I also purchased some banana ketchup, common to the islands but not so commonly found stateside as I've found it works really well, better than tomato ketchup, in preparing various tasty and unique dips. I knew even before coming to Puerto Rico that I would stop at that place. Tee-hee....thanks Yelp! To be totally honest I would have found the place anyway. You cannot miss it when you wander in the streets of Old San Juan: it's just steps away from El Convento and the cathedral. The best part? being welcomed by the intoxicating smells of spices. So potent, rich and complex that it gave me the same tongue-titillating feeling that I get from the taste of vinegar: it makes my mouth water. Love at first smell. And I found indeed enough to entertain my taste buds for a while. The choice of sauces is overwhelming but you will be guided in your choice by a free tasting on crackers. Feel free to try whatever you want, even twice if you are indecisive, no one will care. There is something for everyone. If condiments are not your thing, settle for exotic jams (mango, guava and such) or coffee (mmmmmm!) or even housewares like towels, cups, utensils and baby goats. Bottom line: decent selection of what they say they sell, helpful and friendly staff, touristy prices I'm a huge fan of spices, coffee, and tea, so I knew I wanted to check this place out. The sales person was particularly helpful and friendly, and I purchased a small bag of tea and a bag of coffee beans. I had hoped to find a few particularly hard-to-find spices, but I had no luck. They have a decent selection of bulk spices, which will be impressive if you are used to only a grocery store selection. I live next to a Penzey's spice store, which has a larger selection and better prices. Their selection of sauces and packaged products seems great, but it wasn't what I was looking for. Their products certainly seem to be popular, given that they were also sold in the shop at the resort I was staying at. There are samples of a few of the sauces. They have a small selection of bulk teas, mostly flavored black teas. I bought a small amount of the orange spice, a flavored black tea. It is nice, but wasn't particularly cheap. It is nice to be able to see and smell the teas before buying. Finally, they had a few different types of coffee beans. It was a bit more expensive than the coffee I typically buy at home, but that is what I expected. I've brewed the coffee, and it is ok. Nothing spectacular. read more

The shops are identical in offerings for both Old San Juan & the Tortola location. The Old San Juan location lacked in local color, but, was nicer. This is a nice stop in Tortola for a little shopping in a quaint setting. The selections were very good and we enjoyed our brief visit while on a brief cruise ship stop. One negative note: We stopped in the very same shop while in Old San Juan. There were numerous samples in the San Juan shop to try before you make your purchases.
