The ambiance is nothing fancy since it is the seafood counter of a supermarket. So if you are looking for the frills, this isn't your spot. We are in our car and it was delicious! To find the seafood counter, go to the far back corner of the grocery store from the door. We were briefly confused because the corner straight in the back from the door is a deli counter. Great place to pick up last minute party food items. We came in and picked up 40 chicken wings and other yummy party snacks and it was perfect. The chicken wings were so ono. Especially the salt and vinegar. Pieces were big and generous. This our go to place for party snacks. read more

The management at this store is top notch. This particular Sack n Save works hard to bring in authentic items from Japan. is my favorite store for Japan matcha kit kat and authentic Japan pottery they bring in around Christmas time. I found the Japanese sweet potato in their produce section. Not the purple one from Okinawa, the one that is all the rage right now as the smokey caramelly one that you roast. I happened to luck out one day they had just placed a bunch of thick cut short ribs bone in...for 6.99/lb! We bought a bunch and continue to pull bags out for easy slow cooker dinners with taro leaf. I go in around 10 AM usually and find lots of fresh selection in the cut fruit area. I like their prepared raw chicken in miso marinade, I made it into a soup with vegetables. read more

I REPEAT I REPEAT SACK N SAVE HAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE POKE BOWLS. How can you go wrong with an $8 poke bowl especially in Hilo. You go to other places and you're paying $15 for the same size. The ratio of poke to rice is top notch and I can't speak more highly about it. I usually add furikake and shoyu which make the bowl even better. I really disappoint on there poke in this store. This store should not call foodland they should be call SALTY LAND . We get 4 different kind but its all the same salty. I never gonna come back on this store again. Even the cashier is too sallty . I order 4 pack of food. And she only give me 1 chopstick and a fork. We prefer to shop uptown Sack n Save because their setup seems more spacious. The customers can shop more freely, so the atmosphere seems a lot nicer to shop around for groceries than downtown Sack n Save. We don't have to worry about accidently bumping into any shoppers while we are shopping too. We prefer to purchase our fruits and vegetables at uptown Sack n Save. They look a lot more edible than downtown Sack n Save. They sell pre-soaked teriyaki meat in containers. To our surprise, the meat remain tender and delicious. Their cupcakes are delicious and moist. I enjoy their Chantilly cupcakes! If you are on a tight budget, they sell them in smaller quantities. We've had nicer customer service from uptown Sack n Save. The cashiers are a lot more understanding and helpful towards their customers' needs. They are friendlier and interact with their customers in a much more positive manner. We went there today for poke and other staples. The man behind the counter was friendly and helpful. We ordered a few different poke styles and all were delicious. Fun to try the wasabi one, perfectly spicy. The store was bright and clean and we enjoyed shopping there, my husband and I made sure we had three yes three COVID 19 tests before going out here in Hawaii. He is a toxicologist who is currently helping with vaccine delivery systems. For anyone to suggest we broke any rules by not quarantining doesn't understand the rules or thinks they know them. With NEGATIVE TESTS RESULTS YOU HAVE NO QUARENTINE. SO PLEASE DONT ATTACK ANYONE WHO IS FOLLOWING ALL I REPEAT ALL THE RULES, MY SAFETY AND THOSE OF OTHERS IS PARAMOUNT TO SAY ANYTHING ELSE MEANS YOU HAVENT UNDERSTOOD THE RULES. Just like KTA, Sack N Save has a great selection of grab-and-go bento style foods and poke. Here's a few things you might want to pick up on your next trip: Spam Musubi is the best compact, all-in-one food on the planet. Everybody makes it a little differently from how much nori to wrap around it and how they flavor their spam from just plain fried to adding shoyu or family recipe teriyaki sauce. Sack N Save's version looks like a huge nigiri sushi with just the right amount of sticky rice, a thick slice of spam, and just the right amount of sauce. I don't like spam that is overly sauced since it overpowers the spam flavor that I love. It's wrapped in plastic wrap to keep the rice sticky and makes the nori a little chewy but good nonetheless. Rating: 4.5/5 Spicy Ahi Poke is similar to a Spicy Tuna Roll you might get at a sushi bar, but much creamier. They use more of the Japanese mayo and sriracha mix than KTA for a creamier consistency. Everything is covered in this so, in the case, it looks more like an orange parfait. The tobiko sparkles through with the bright orange color. Although, it was very creamy, the flavors along with the onions, green onions, and ahi worked well together. Rating: 4.5/5 California Poke with Avocado is definitely haole-style. The flavors are very mild and the avocado is just too soft to marinate with the fish causing a mushiness. Folks that love the California Roll, might want to try this one first as an entry to the poke world. For me, it just didn't match, but good effort. Rating: 3/5 Korean Style Marlin Poke is tastes like marlin and kimchi flavors mixed together. It has a tiny bit of vinegar flavor with chili peppers, sesame seeds, and green onions, but no cabbage. The flavor works really well with the marlin, bringing big fish flavor to the forefront. Rating: 4/5 Korean Style Mussels Poke is very similar to the Korean Style Marlin Poke. Same ingredients, but the mussels give it very a different texture and flavor profile than marlin. The briny and creaminess of the mussels are a nice contrast to the spicy kimchi flavor. Rating: 4/5 Garlic Ahi Poke is a nice play on flavors. The ahi is cut into nicely sized chunks, not too big and not too small, so the shoyu and flavor penetrate the fish just right. The flavor profile is almost Korean-style and just love the garlic. I could eat this all day long. Rating: 5/5 Mussels Poke is very simple with ogo and little bit of chili pepper. It's briny but it balances with the sweetness of the mussels. The ogo adds a nice crunchy texture contrast to the creamy, soft mussels. Rating: 4/5 read more

There is a male employee that works at this specific location, Foodland has chosen to keep him employed here, though complaints have been filed. This location sounds dangerous to me, female shoppers should stay away: "If you didn't already know, I was an employee of Sack N Save/Foodland and ran the Facebook Group "We Be Meat and Stuff" where I advertised all our current sales. Let me start off by saying I busted my butt for this company. I went from courtesy clerk, to a fish cutter, to a meat wrapper and then a meat cutter in 2 & a half years, all due to my hard work and dedication for this company. But starting in March of last year I was sexually harassed by a coworker at Sack N Save. This man would harass me in multiple ways but the worst being when he'd cut open packages of expired hot dogs, stick the hot dogs in his pants zipper and then proceed to ask me to come show him what I would do with the hot dogs. This happened multiple times even in front of other coworkers. This employee was put on indefinite suspension for 11 months. Once I transferred from Puianako Sack N Save to Downtown Hilo they brought him back to work. I wasn't even notified he was coming back and literally almost ran into him when I went into the store to retrieve some items out of my locker. Now wait a minute, I'm suppose to be working for a company and under a union(UFCW 480)that has a ZERO tolerance for sexual harassment in the work place. Now not only were there witnesses who made written statements about the incidents but he was left with no choice but to admit it, which he did. After his return to work I made DOZENS of phone call and left DOZENS of messages to Foodlands HR department and to this day have NEVER received a call back. I contacted my union who had very little info to give me but informed me that it was Foodland who had the final decision to bring this man back to work and that I would be receiving a letter with an explanation of why. I NEVER received any such letter! I am not the only woman who was harassed by this man, however I am only wanting to provide the facts of what I had to deal with as an employee of Foodland. It should also be explained that I kept this to myself for a year and half because from the little communication I did receive from my union and in-store management I was made to feel like if I discussed this matter with anyone, my job would be in jeopardy. I have come to realize I was working so hard for a company that had complete disregard for my safety and well being and for that reason I had to leave the company. I can only pray that this man who is still a Foodland employee does not harm or harass anyone else." read more

Hard to believe that I'm the first to review this place! Perhaps b/c it's next to KTA and just gets ignored. I've been a fan for Foodland (and Foodland Farms) and this location is the same store just with a different name. Absolutely no reason why they use a different name, but I still shop here! What I can't get at the Farmer's market, I usually end up here. I like the produce selection and quality better than Safeway and prices are a bit better than KTA. read more
