I only shop at Safeway because it has organic milk at a reasonable price and a few other products I like. Once in a while, there's a good deal on something. Of the three grocery stores I frequent on a regular basis, Safeway is my least favorite, and I dread going there. The shopping carts are unwieldly, difficult to turn, and other customers have commented to me about problems they experience with the carts, "The cart has a mind of its own." I complained to an employee about the carts a year ago and she told me they were getting new carts. Really??? I also shop at KTA and Cost U Less and have no problems maneuvering their carts. I don't pick up a good, friendly vibe at Safeway like I do from KTA. It's hit or miss with the cashiers. Some are friendly and pleasant, others, not so much. I'm older. I'm used to being looked through and dismissed. Yesterday, a young cashier blew me off when I gave him a product that had been tampered with. He said it was normal. Is it normal to have the raw oats in the package exposed because the seal is broken? I gave him three bags and he piled most of my items into one, making it quite heavy. He didn't bother to put the two items that wouldn't fit into that bag into another bag. The fact that I'm a strapping 4'11", 98 pound specimen impressed him I guess. read more

I put in an online order with Safeway for next day delivery, I specified "Hand it to me". I ordered directly from the Safeway site. They use Door Dash for delivery. The order came. The person announced that he was delivering. I shouted out at least four times to wait. He didn't wait. I use a walker. When I got to the door, he was just getting into his car and then started backing out of the driveway, I tried to grt his attention. He drove off. The grocery bags were left on the porch. Due to some medical problems, I am not able to lift anything heavy or bend over very far.I called the Safeway Cutoner Service. They contacted the Door Dasher, but he didn't want to come back because he was on another delivery. The Safeway person advised that I call DoorDash directly. I spent about 20 minutes talking with the Door Dash person. She called the door dasher, but he would not come back. She asked for the Safeway store number. She put me on hold and attempted to contact the Safeway store. She said that the person at Safeway would not give her any assistance. She advised me to call Safeway again. I called Customer Service again. The person who I spoke with told me that she was not able to do anything. read more

Disabled folks beware! Yesterday the motorized cart I was using was confiscated by Safeway staff halfway through bagging in the self check out because I was too slow and standing (I'm unable to lift filled grocery bags or twist my body from a sitting position.) I was informed another customer was waiting for the cart and when I was through bagging a staff member would "assist me" by pushing a regular cart to my vehicle. Apparently, because I could stand it was assumed I was (1) able to walk to the parking lot (I'm not) and (2) had a car (being on prescription pain meds I'm not able to drive currently.) Seeing my response (dismay and tearing up) the staff member decided it was a good time to laugh and joke about my not liking onions. Perhaps I should have presented a doctor's note verifying my need need to use the motorized cart or explained beforehand the need to stand while bagging groceries. It never occurred to me the cart would be taken away while I still needed it or without asking me if I could manage without it. It's called detrimental reliance. Or perhaps a little education is needed regarding making assumptions about disabilities or the inappropriateness of laughing at a customer's distress. read more

Shopped at this store for over 30 years- last few I have been using the pickup service. I am tired of getting ripped off- discounts applying to buying in bulk are left off because somehow they only have one less than what you ordered and there is never a replacement!!! Really!?! Checking the app prior to leaving for the store does not work- and once you have pointed this out to them and they admit what they have done- YOU must go back to the store for the discount. We came in for some groceries to sustain us while we're visiting the "Big Island." This is just a grocery store but it seems better maintained than the stores where I live. The shelves and produce section were better stocked and better presented. Some of the prices are A LOT higher (water is the worst) compared to LA. transportation is expensive. But the employees were helpful and friendly. Oh - and if you live in California- your Von's club number gets you the discounts. AND they DO have the big savings on wine if you buy six bottles. We went to this Safeway several times when we were in Hilo. Super clean and the prices are comparable to the main land.

I mean is safeway, what can I say. They do have gas station, so you can redeem points there. They carry lots of mainland products and their prices are average too. They do have a good selection of flowers and gift like accessories. The store itself is not the cleanest. Their ussual section where you can seat and enjoy starbucks or quick lunch is ussually dirty and occupied by a non-so pleasant person or two. They do have bank of hawaii, coinstar machine and lots of parking space. The staff is friendly and there ussuall are enough registers open for Friday and Sunday rush. read more

I like this store much better than KTA! Much better prices and much better selection by far!! The isles are clearly labeled, wide and open isles, plenty of cashiers and a very nice bakery selection. I cant believe there is no review written by me for Safeway. Its pretty weird knowing that this is THE one of the few places I frequent in this Big Island. You dont know how happy I was to see Safeway when I first got here because I would always go to Vons or Pavillion for grocery back home. Safeway is clean, fancy and sells a lot of high quality produce, deli and goods. Parking is plenty. But be careful on Fridays. Because of $5 Fridays, parking can be pretty crazy. My advice to you is that dont even attempt to park near the entrance. You should try to park in the back to avoid chaotic scenes ans possibly prevent from other people scratching your car since a lot of people come in and out of the parking lot. Grocery in general in Hawaii is prerrt expensive. Safeway is a lot more expensive compared to its neighbor, Target and other markets but I still shop here because it seems a lot more fresh to me. Also, they have a lot of good deals most of the time from the meat department as well. Safeway also carries these sweet potatoes I like. I am not talking about Ube but Im talking about Asian sweet potatoes where inside is rather yellow. These are very sweet and very similar to Korean sweet potatoes. Everyone in Safeway is very kind and they always try their best to help you as well. They provide paper bags so if you forgot your own grocery bag, its OK. It has a Excellent Beer and Wine selection for your so called "Happy Hour". 5. They have a Food Court with a small dining area inside, that has a Sushi Bar, Chinese Food, and a Deli to name a few (for those day's ur A** is too Lazy to cook). 6. Full Service Florist (=Roses) to get something for your "Honey Bunny", hint, hint, lol! 7. Bank of Hawaii to cash your Cha Ching's $$$ to spend on your "Honey Bunny". 8. Full Service Bakery to Carb Load for more Curve's, he he! 9. Full Service Meat & Seafood Dept. for that mouth-watering BBQ, Party! 10. Full Service Pharmacy for you Addicts! (only joking, ha ha!). This review is strictly for the floral department in Safeway. My mom had a terrible experience with a flower company...long story short, the flower delivery she had scheduled a week or so before my grandmas birthday was cancelled the day before (reason: we can't deliver it)! Mom was beyond mad since driving to their house in Hilo to deliver flowed is not going to happen. But this review is for another company and another time. First of all, since when did Hilo have a Safeway (and Target)? The parking lot was nice and we went straight to the HUMANGOUS flower section. There were a ton of arrangements to choose from and we ended up with an orchid arrangement. Esaiah was awesome! He helped to make sure everything was good with the orchid before we left from writing the card to making sure it was freshly watered and wrapped up. If you need flowers in Hilo, go check out Esaiah in the floral department for great and friendly service. read more

Safeway in Hilo in not a safe place to shop. Today I saw customers violating the store's mask policy as soon as I entered, so I brought it to the attention of a store employee... who did nothing. I was there during the store's self-proclaimed "senior hours," but there was (as always) a father shopping with his three- or four-year-old daughter. He had a mask almost on; I could see his nose and mouth. She had no mask at all. I asked another store employee about the policy. She shrugged and walked away. I waited and waited in the cheese section for a store employee to get off his phone and move away. Another employee came up to ask if I had a problem, and yes -- it was because the guy on the phone had no mask. She took off her mask while she was talking to me, then rushed off to get the manager when I insisted that she move away from me. The manager came rushing right up to me to offer apologies. No action taken -- the first guy was still standing at the end of the aisle with no mask on -- but an apology, which really helps one keep quarantine. I should have left then and there, but I had a very full cart and decided to pay and get out. I had a choice of two cashiers. One was a bald-headed guy helping the "self-checkout" people -- his nose was uncovered while he was in close proximity to customers. The other was a cashier wearing no mask but a plastic visor. Those visors are practically useless for Covid-19. I unloaded my cart and returned to the store to complain about the risk of catching disease from cashiers not properly wearing masks. I came back in to see the bald-headed guy no longer wearing a mask at all, talking to another employee. It's pathetic because wearing a mask is so easy. It takes no effort at all. I wear glasses and have no problem with it. My asthmatic niece has no difficulties at all. I don't understand any argument against the proper wearing of masks. And if Safeway employees don't want to wear masks, maybe they shouldn't be working with the public. read more

High prices, especially on produce; they NEVER have everything that is on sale and no longer give raincheck as I was rudely informed by cashier ("come back tomorrow, it might be here"), never mind the 50 mile round trip some must make; ALWAYS check your receipt BEFORE leaving the store as prices charged are very often wrong and always in their favor. They must make tens of thousands a year on overcharging; never enough cashiers, so your frozen food thaws while waiting; just basically a sad experience every time. Never improves. read more

So Safeway is a large, organized, and clean supermarket with plenty of parking. There's a Starbucks and a Bank of Hawaii conveniently inside for you to grab some cash before wasting half your grocery money on fancy bean-water. They even have a gas station now! This is where the fambam and I like to go fill up the tank. When you drive a gas-guzzlin' truck like I do, you can appreciate saving a few dimes here and there. Safeway Club is the way to go. Score some discount on your foodie needs. Want something on sale but they ran out? Get a raincheck. Line moving too slow for you? Go to the self check-out because we all know people are too lazy to ring up their own items so do it yourself. Cutie from the mainland coming to visit? I only really go here when orange juice is on sale but the last experience was particularly bad. It was the evening of July 3rd, the night before the biggest BBQ day of the year, and there were 3 employees in the entire store. Two of them were manning the register's as the lines backed up well into aisles, all self checkout lanes had been closed, and the store security guard was bagging groceries. The third employee was either a. not capable of operating a cash register or b. on a treasure hunt with a very important piece of paper in his hand which limited his field of vision to the point that he was not aware of the 30 or so customers waiting to check out. I'd shop here more often if I was on food stamps or had lots of money and didn't care about the prices being twice what they should be. p.s. the produce sucks, you are better off at the farmers market where you can spend $10 for a week's worth of veggies. read more

Best thing about this place is the self check out. I would come in, get my ideas, and leave quickly. Customer service is good too as I have returned items with no receipt and got store credit. Large, clean store, and well stocked. Cheaper than KTA for mainland staples like apples and spinach. Very convenient too that there is a Bank of Hawaii inside. read more
