We received updates, pictures, and videos constantly, which made being apart from him so much easier while we anxiously waited to bring him home. Diane even helped arrange a puppy nanny to safely fly Meatball home to us since we are in a different state. When Meatball came home, we were honestly blown away. He was happy, confident, crate trained overnight, almost 100% potty trained, already working on commands, recall, leash manners, and overall such a well-loved, well-rounded puppy. But beyond the amazing training itself, what meant the most was knowing Diane was always just a text or phone call away whenever we needed help or reassurance. I've had two Bassets in my lifetime and there seems to have been a void since my last one passed…read moreaway. I've always had a Shiba Inu and a Basset Hound but for the last 3 1/2 years, we've only had a Shiba. So after my husband had a chance to interact with a few Bassets, he was sold on the idea of adopting a Basset. Initially, we applied through another organization who was difficult to deal with. So we decided to submit an application to Basset Hound Rescue of Southern California (BHRSC). We had to submit photos of every room in our home as well as the exterior portion. They also wanted to see what kind of yard you have as well as if we have a pool. I believe your application will be denied if you have a pool so be forewarned. Then we had to do a phone interview in which we answered simple questions. They wanted to know why we wanted a Basset and if we had any experience with the breed. Also, who will care for the dog and if all family members are on board with the Basset being adopted. They needed to know which veterinarian will be providing medical attention to the dog and used them as a reference. Coincidentally, our vet works with BHRSC already so he was able to provide a good reference for us! Anyway, a year and a half went by and we were starting to give up on this organization. Finally, we got an email about the Spring Games. They wanted us to bring our dog to the event to meet hounds that were up for adoption. Our Shiba didn't connect with any of their hounds BUT they had a better idea as to which personality would be the best match for our dog. While we were there, they told us about a dog that would be coming down from Visalia. Her name is Olive and she was an energetic, younger dog. So we held out to meet Olive! We were in constant contact with Megan, on of their volunteers. It took a couple of weeks for Olive to get a ride down from Visalia to Orange County! When she arrived, we were so excited! But then she had quite a few medical problems and some were contagious to other dogs. They paid for ALL of her medical care, X-rays, dental work, and lots of medications. I think it was about 3 weeks before she was clear to be adopted. Olive's initial meeting with our dog was a little rough but she pulled through. We could tell that she was in need of some confidence building and socialization. However considering what she's been through, you couldn't blame her for feeling a little insecure around other dogs. In the end, we knew that she was the dog for us! I signed the adoption paperwork and gave them the $350 fee. After that, we arranged a date and time to pick her up. When we brought Olive home, Megan texted me to see how she was doing. The next day, another adoption coordinator, Carol, called me to discuss and behavioral concerns and medical issues. We talked about the pre-existing conditions that Olive had but I brought up something that wasn't noted before. They told me to take her back to the vet for testing and the cost of the visit would be covered by them. With all of the confusion going on, Olive came out free and clear. BHRSC does not leave you hanging at any point. They are there for the life of the dog and want to make sure that this will be that dog's forever home. There is an adjustment period for the dog so if it doesn't work out, they will take the dog back or help out with training. That's what we love about this organization. Olive is such a cute little Basset with so much love to share. She is adjusting to her new environment as well as sharing a home with an unfamiliar dog. The good news is that she has bonded with our cat! Olive and our Shiba are slowly getting used to one another but we know that in time, they'll be alright! We are very happy with our decision to adopt a Basset because if we went a different route, we would not have met Olive!

She has a great helper Natasha who stayed overnight at our house keeping them company. We were kept updated with pictures and videos during our trip. One of our pups had a medical issue and she kept us up to date with her progress and condition while lovingly providing great care. She even made frozen treats for them also to keep them busy. Lola's incredibly sweet and a total push over with people but she's touch and go with other dogs. Long story short, she was a rescue and her previous owners bred her way too young then surrendered her soon after giving birth to her babies. When Gina started walking her and introducing her to other dogs she immediately was able to tell me that there seemed to be consistency in her aversion to male dogs, which made complete sense considering her lore. Her ability to read dogs is seriously next level. And aside from her talent as a dog whisperer her personality is outgoing as all get out. She's incredibly loving, personable, always showed me she cared deeply, and was not afraid to get her hands dirty. I'm so thankful for her and all the time and love she put into our relationship and her relationship with Lola.

The next day I received a phone call and text message from the Foster parent. She was very friendly and nice. She answered any questions I had and we set up a time the following week to meet the dogs. My main concern was making sure the new doggy got along with my current puppy. My current pups is a Pomeranian. I brought my Pom to meet two different dogs through PoochMatch. My puppy didn't like either one. The first dog, my puppy was growling and didn't like. The second puppy they tolerated each other a bit, but my Pom would run away any chance she got. I am still confused as to why. My Pom is very friendly and has been fine around other dogs. I'm not sure why she didn't get along with the possible adoptions. It was still a nice process to go through and I'd recommend for anyone wanting to rescue. I really want to rescue. The second puppy we saw was homeless and needing a home badly. Poor baby.

Choosing Marti was easily the best choice I could have ever made and I am forever a client of Marti's. I will never look elsewhere when adopting my next Havanese (or a breed that isn't a Havanese, for that matter). I adopted Cookie, formally Cartier, from the "C" litter. From our first phone call in Fall 2024, Marti was attentive to the details of my life and what kind of puppy temperament would be best fit for my lifestyle. She is kind, SO communicative, and the most detail-oriented, loving, and caring person/breeder. Seeing how loved these puppies are far before they are even born was constant reassurance that I made the best choice. I would receive multiple texts/pictures/videos a day when Cookie was born. So anxious and excited to get my puppy, Marti answered all of my questions and was always so reassuring and kind. Cookie came to me loving her crate (this was a game changer), being exposed to so many sights and sounds (her groomer says she is better behaved than adult dogs she's been grooming for years ), and is the epitome of a perfect puppy and I truly owe it all to Marti because she set Cookie (and the rest of her litter) up for complete success. They were not…read morevery far from my home area so I called Marti and set up an appointment to see the remaining two puppies in the litter. All of the puppies were there when I visited the next day. Each one of the puppies were absolutely precious and they were happy and lively. The mother was nursing all of them . I wanted a female and there was 1 male & 1 female left. All the other puppies from the litter were spoken for. I quickly fell in love with Roxie and gave my deposit that night. I had to wait another month until the puppies were old enough to go to their new homes. Marty updated me with photos of my puppy and she also provided me important paperwork to look review. The entire process was very easy. The home where the puppies were living was very clean and orderly. Marti truly has the puppies, best interest and was so sweet and caring and accommodating to me. I had asked if she could keep the puppy for one more week because of my busy work schedule, and she was more than happy to do that. I have never purchased a dog before, but this process was very easy. My puppy is absolutely precious and everybody that meets her is obsessed with her. She is an absolute delight, and very well-behaved. I might add. I highly recommend Harris Havenese if you are thinking about getting a Havanese puppy. I received a call from Nici who arranged for a meet and greet in an office in Los Alamitos. We also had a tentative home check arranged. After a meet and greet between Eli with another prospective adoptive family, Nici advised that Eli would probably not be a good fit in my household. I couldn't agree more with her assessment because I have a smaller dog in my home that would probably be prone to getting injured by Eli's sheer playfulness. He is a solid dog with a lot of energy. The other dog in my house is a senior teacup chihuahua. I am so happy that Eli has since found his forever home. His story is one that tugged at my heartstrings and I just had to meet him. Even though it did not work out between us, K9 Kismet is a legit rescue that cares about the wellbeing of the pet and thoroughly vets their applicants.

My initial enrollment with the Veterans/First Responder Service Dog Training (VFR) team began back…read morein February of 2024. What started as a simple intention to gain basic obedience training soon evolved into an ongoing, dedicated commitment to getting my pound rescued dog certified as a full-service dog. I continue to work towards becoming an efficient handler of my service dog, and because of my VFR training, my service dog has mastered almost twenty of the required thirty commands towards graduation. As a result of our training activities, I walk five miles a day, have lost over sixty-five pounds (65lbs), and have been able to stop the use of most of my previously prescribed medications. Because of our training, I was able to take my dog on vacation with me while we visited multiple national parks, a UNESCO site, restaurants, museums and stayed at four-star hotels, without having to pay for pet service fees. VFR affiliation means more to me than basic obedience training, it is about the unspoken camaraderie of the membership that consists of military veterans (and active duty) as well as first responders. Jenny and James are fantastic people, and I am indebted to them for the training they provide at no cost to me.
