Visiting Steamboat for some some snowboarding and other activities, I found equestrian riding with Saddleback Ranch. I've always wanted to ride horses, but never got around to it, but now that I had the time and went ahead and booked a 2 hour reservation. I loved that they provide free shuttle service for this activity, and even called the day before to confirm pick-up time and location, because I didn't know they could pick-up us in front of where we were staying. (I didn't realize the name of the condo we were staying at so I picked another location that was next closest). They were 10 minutes early to our pick-up, nbd since we were already there waiting. Then they went ahead and picked up a few other patrons before arriving at the ranch. There was a main ranch part where you submit your waiver (don't forget to print and sign/bring with you). But I did wish they had mentioned on their website that you can't bring backpacks, just essentials like your phone and wallet/maybe a bottle of water. Almost half our group had backpacks then was told we can't bring it along the horse ride. I got a horse named Chelsea. She specializes in teaching children. I got her because I mentioned that I was a nervous about riding so the staff accommodated and gave me a horse that was extra well trained. LOL. The staff was very attentive and would always check on the riders to see if we're okay. Definitely put some sunblock on, I can feel the UV rays blasting back from the snow (even though it was cloudy/no sun), thankfully I had sunblock on + face covering on. Ride took about 1.5 hours, they provided cookies and apple cider after the ride! Only thing was that, I'd def would plan for at least half the day, what I thought was going to be 2-2.5 hour excursion (with shuttle pick-up and drop-off), but ended up being 4.5ish hours instead. I appreciate that the ranch was super accommodating, but I feel like once the bus has driven far off enough, the group that wants on should just wait for the next one. We were almost to the main road when one of the groups changed their minds on the snowtubbing and wanted to go back to their hotel. We ended up making a u-turn to go pick them up, cost us another 30 minutes RT or so. Then they were also nice enough to drop someone's lost ID off, but would've been nice if they did it after dropping off everyone just out of business courtesy (although did they ask if we minded, but we didn't have the heart to be like, "can you drop us off first, it's getting late"-- we were the last group). We didn't get back to our lodge until almost 6PM. Other than that, everything was great and we had a lot of fun! If we ever come back, might give their snowmobiling a try. :) read more

They should probably take their Trump Pence 2020 flag down from the main entrance that you can't miss when entering into their facility. You attract more bees with honey. The extremely kind staff should not have to suffer for the potentially one stubborn owners delusional fantasies. That flag is as unwelcoming as flying the confederate flag. Other than all that...excellent customer service and experience. I would love to visit again, but would promptly turn around and ask for a refund if that flag continues to fly. read more

It was a great experience! We got the 2 hour tour which was the perfect amount of time (I was afraid it would be too short). The shuttle experience was also great- shuttle came a little early and took us back safely when it started snowing. The only thing that would have made the experience better is if there could have been 2 tour guides per group- one in the front and one in the back of the group with walkie talkies or some sort of communication. In our group we had a couple people get stuck in deep snow/fall over. It took a while for the guide to realize someone was missing which took more time to turn around to help out. So having one in the front and back would have made the tour go more smoothly. read more

Had an amazing time horseback riding and snow tubing on our family vacation. The guides for riding were fun and knowledgeable and kept us entertained with stories about the ranch and local wildlife. They did an excellent job dealing with both new and experienced riders too. Snow tubing is an absolute blast and the kids couldn't get enough of flying down the hills. Only word of advice would be to check on the timing of the return shuttle as we had to scramble to gather up the kids and get them on the bus. Highly recommend Saddleback Ranch! read more

What an amazing experience, we did the package with 3 hours snowmobiling and tubing and it was outstanding!! The most beautiful views I have ever seen, the tour guide was very patient, very knowledgeable, he made us feel safe through our the whole trip, I first thought 3 hours would be too much, but is definitely enough, I wouldn't do a longer trip just because snowmobiling can be a little bit of a workout, and my left pinky was hurting a bit maybe for trying to press the breaks, they provided lunch a few options to chose from, hot chocolate, cookie, chips, and then we went tubbing for about 2hours!! OUT-freaking-STANDING!!! We booked the 2hr snowmobile tour and wow I could have done this all day. Our guide Jared was excellent and clearly had the moves on the sled. He was patient and friendly in helping anyone who got stuck or ventured off course. He even let us have open range to test our skills in freshly snowed fields until we had our fill before continuing on the trail. Overall I would recommend this to any and everyone who is even considering. Saddleback Ranch was 5- stars from start to finish. One of the highlights of the trip for sure. I have been twice for the Sleigh Ride and Dinner in the winter. Both outings were enjoyable but not a once in a lifetime experience. The family that owns the Ranch are exceptional folks and cannot do enough for you. They are very customer oriented and ready to please. The sleigh ride on 20 person sleighs pulled by two large draft horses takes about a half hour through a part of the 8100 acre ranch to a dinning hall. After arrival and drinks, the meal is served via a serving line and seconds are certainly acceptable, as long as the food lasts. BBQ Brisket, HUGE Chicken breasts and Vegetarian Lasagna and the entre accompanied by a salad, baked potato and baked beans. All were good but nothing exceptional. Dinner is accompanied by a singing cowboy and after dinner, one of the cowhands teaches calf roping with a small mockup of a calf. Everyone is encouraged but not forced to try your hand. The evening closes with dancing and the shuttle van is brought to the door for the 30 minute ride back to town. This is a good value for money and a nice diversion for those in town for a ski holiday. read more

I really wasn't sure what to expect when booking the trip - I was worried that it would be akin to a nose to tail horse riding experience but sitting on a snowmobile. We did the horseback riding tour in the mountains. Thy offer hotel pickup, but we drove out and it was easy to locate. It was a 2 hr tour that looped to the top of the ridge and back down through the valley. The 360 views were amazing. Deb was a great tour guide, interactive and helpful. Did the sleigh dinner ride to the ranch and had dinner. Not impressed. The food wasn't that good. Iceberg/romaine salad with not much else in it. The beans had bacon so not vegetarian friendly and seemed lI'm e from a can. They had pre packaged rolls. And then your meat. Our party's order was messed up so some of us that can't eat beef, pork or chicken were out of luck. Who doesn't plan for extra?? I got the salmon out of the grace of a friend but it was dry and overcooked. The cash bar was extra and it seemed you couldn't do byob. Dessert was ok but coolwhip instead of fresh whipped cream?? Overall food was a disappointment and the staff just seemed like they were coraling us like their cattle and getting us on our merry way home. Way over priced for what you get. My wife and I booked the sunset tour for snowmobiling then 30-45 minutes of snow tubing afterwards. Nickname of our guide was, Minnesota, he was a good guide. Downfall of our ride was other people being first timers and getting stuck, we were first timers too as well but have drove UTVs and jet skis before. People getting stuck, delayed us and let us not as much time in the playground is what he called it. We're you just get to free ride on this area of land. When we got back to the ranch, 5:30 we drove over to the snow tubing area and we got the tube and went to go down and was told they closed at 6:30. It was 6:18 or so when went up on more time and then went down, 6:25 they wouldn't let anyone else go up. Not even 2 other people at 6:20 go up one more time. For how much to pay for the package, I felt like it was a let down for a business side. Letting people tube until actually 6:30 would be nice. We literally went down 3 times before we had to go and that was with literally like no one there. Other people in our group, only got to go down 2 times. Spent the day horseback riding and snow tubing. What a great time and a super friendly staff. Highly recommend.

We had so much fun here. The hill is a perfect for a day with the family. They have a nice warming hut which is good for putting on and taking off all your winter gear. They also offer food and drinks there. The staff at the hill were friendly, professional and helpful. There were two reasons why I didn't give this five stars. First, we were confused by booking. We weren't sure if you had to reserve spots for the hill. It wasn't clear to us. We tried calling but didn't get anyone so we headed over to the ranch. When we got there and I inquired in at the main building about if reservations were needed. The lady there snapped at me and made a sarcastic comment. I felt this was unprofessional and unnecessary. As a side note, you do need a reservation for the shuttle from town to the ranch but if driving yourself then you don't need one to tube. The second reason has to do with the hill design itself. If going down the curly run when they they are busy one has to be exteremly careful as that the tubers can collide into those in the line waiting for a ride up. It would be nice if the curly lane was more designated or if lane to line up more protected from on coming tubers. It can be challenging if with small children to get out of the way fast enough. We didn't experience any issues ourselves but you do have to be very aware. We will definitely go back for a visit again in the future and maybe try other activities they offer. read more

My friend and I were visiting from NYC and did the morning 11am ride. The ranch staff was very friendly and fun and we had a couple of great horses to lead us over the mountains and through the valley. You get breath taking views and the horses were pretty bombproof. My family of 3 did the Winter Horse Back riding tour. This was our first time ever riding horses. The horses were well trained and made riding quite simple. The snowy scenery was breathtaking. However, there was so much snow on the ground that we had to ride in what felt like a pony line the entire time. At no point were we able to do any horse riding/trotting. We understand this was because of the mass amounts of snow, so unavoidable and beyond their control. The 2 hour ride was wonderful, but an hour and a half would've been enough for us. Our female guide was very knowledgeable about horses but had a weird bed side manner. Her comments to riders appeared rude/annoyed at times. Dismounting was a disaster for me. I am very short and had hoped that we would use the mounting block for dismounting too, especially since this is something I have never done before. Well that wasn't the case, so be sure to speak up and ask for additional help so you don't get stuck and fall. My boys went in for hot chocolate and cookies. A treat we were all looking forward too, but the hot chocolate was luke warm at best. All in all we enjoyed ourselves and had a wonderful time. Just wish the end of the trip was as good as the beginning. read more

Great family fun. We booked the tubbing hill and sleigh ride dinner package. Communication was detailed and informative from start to finish. The owners and their employees where supper friendly. We had a large party and it was nice to be able to come and go from the tubbing lodge during our tubing time to stay warm and have a beer while waiting for the sleigh ride dinner. Can't say enough about the sleigh ride. Justin who was our driver and is also one of the owners answered our questions about the horses and the ranch on the way to dinner. My family has made Steamboat an annual summer vacation to escape the heat in Texas. Part of our new routine is to book a trail ride with Saddleback. This year, we were lucky enough to have one of the owners, Luanne, as our trail guide. It was great to get the ranch history first hand, ride through the 2600+ head of yearlings on the ranch, and just have a top-notch ride. Stealthily celebrated a very important birthday by going on Saddleback's Sleigh Ride Dinner. By chance, we were seated next to a lovely couple from Scotland, both on the sleigh and beside at dinner. The dinner was delicious (Salmon/Steak), our hosts extremely friendly, and we got in a wonderful half-slowdance before it was time to head out. The only downer worth mentioning is: riding back to our car in a shuttle instead of on the sleigh again. I realize the horses need a break, and most people probably had Saddleback pick them up in a shuttle, but it would have been romantic to ride in the sleigh after the moon had risen and the stars had come out! We booked a 2-hour tubing activity and it couldn't have been more fun! The shuttle was easy to locate at Gondola Square, the ride out was easy even though it was snowing and it's a well run operation. Everyone is very friendly. The ranch is huge, 8000 acres, and we were able to see horses, cows, snowmobilers and lots of acreage on our drive out there. It was really cold so I would suggest dressing in layers and wearing goggles. Helmets are optional and we didn't bring ours and didn't feel we needed them. The "black diamond" hill was my favorite where you lay belly down and go head first. Keep your feet up and you'll have a really fun ride down! They do have a hill where you can go down as a group holding on to each other's tubes. They have a "magic carpet" where you sit in the tube, they hook you up to a line and it takes you up the hill for each ride. If you have to walk you'd be exhausted! There's a small building serving chili, snacks and hot chocolate. It's a great place to wait before you board the bus back to Steamboat. Highly recommend! read more
