I never thought I'd say this, but I had a great experience getting two root canals (one was an emergency!) with Dr. Jönsson at Saddleback Valley Endodontics. Both procedures were smooth, efficient, and surprisingly comfortable. Dr. Jönsson is warm, calm, incredibly smart, and exceptionally skilled at what he does, and somehow even interesting to talk to while working on a tooth that *feels* approximately two millimeters from your brain. He explains everything clearly, answers questions thoughtfully, and makes you feel completely at ease the entire time. His main assistant is also fantastic. She is kind, attentive, and professional. I had a root canal with Dr Jonson and had the absolute best experience of my life. He explained the whole process and it went so smooth with no pain. After the procedure was complete he advised me to take either advil, ibuprofen, or Tylenol for.any pain after the numbing subsided. I needed no pain meds after the numbing wore off. Dr. Chu and the staff at Saddleback Valley Endodontics were super helpful, and I was a patient for only 30 minutes. I needed a second opinion regarding a recommended root canal., They first took some comprehensive x-rays (3D even), and then Dr. Chu spent some time confirming where my pain was originating. Then, he gave me the good/bad news - he could do a root canal, same-day even, but due to the damage to my tooth it might not be a long term solution. After showing me the x-rays and answering all my questions, Dr. Chu said I could go either way, and summarized the pros and cons of the root canal vs extracting the tooth and replacing it. Here's the thing - Dr. Chu doesn't offer extractions, but I never felt pushed towards the root canal. I had a cracked tooth that was really bothering me and I was referred to Dr. Jonsson here at SVE. I was able to get an appointment in for a consultation a couple days after calling. This was already a great first impression. After the consultation, Dr. Jonsson advised me that I could either save my tooth and possibly have to get a root canal later down the road, or just get the root canal. I did not feel pressured to answer one way or the other, but I did feel educated enough on the situation to feel confident in my answer. He was very patient with me and even offered to do a same day root canal for me to help with the pain. The process was almost painless. The worst part was probably the needle to numb you and the soreness you feel days following the procedure. Dr. Jonsson offer to narrate everything that he was doing while he was doing it, which helped me understand what was going on throughout the entire procedure. I will never recommend anyone to get a root canal, but if you have to get one, this is the place to go to. Everyone there was extremely helpful and kind. The most important thing for me is going to a doctor that is honest and trustworthy. I felt that Dr. Jonsson met both these. I have now had two root canals at this office, one with Dr. Tatosian and one with Dr. Chu, and I highly recommend them both. The procedures were completely painless, and both dentists were very considerate and explained what they were doing as they went along. I had a root canal done here today by Dr Jonsson and i was quite impressed. He is extremely honest and will not do a root canal if not needed. I actually saw him a few months ago and he determined i did not need a root canal. When i had another issue i knew i could trust him so i went back. Unfortunately this time i did need a root canal. The procedure was not bad at all and i only have mild soreness in my jaw tonight. The tooth is one that is very hard to get numb but he did everything possible to assure i didn't feel pain. First thing to be aware of is that the office waiting room is very outdated and my experience has been, f you aren't willing to put money into that with how much money you make then you are most likely going to cut corners other ways also. Dr. Tatosian's assistant was as unpleasant as she could be, when you are already in a vulnerable state this is the last thing you want. The room I was in had wires coming out of the walls and lots of dental instruments out in the open in jars. I don't know how those are used but I wouldn't want them out like that and then in my mouth. I had an issue with an infected tooth and Dr. Tatosian asked the assistant for some dental floss and she pulled it out with no gloves on and dirty hands, That should be a basic courtesy to not put something in my mouth that is not sanitary especially when I already have an infection. Lastly Dr. Tatosian had one foot out the door the whole time. I was trying to get my consultation and it sure did not feel like an appropriate exchange of money. $400 for 10-15 minutes. The worst thing happened after the appt. because I wanted to take my X-rays with me because I knew I would not be back. When I got to the endodontist I was going to use I found out that the unkind assistant whether it was purposeful or not is up to you for interpretation but she put someone else's X-rays on the hard drive. Making it so I had to go back and get another copy, which if it was on purpose is just unethical. Best dental office I've ever been to, and I'm terrified of the dentist, I was planning on full anesthesia for a root canal. That's how bad my dental anxiety is. But I didn't need to do that! Go see Dr. Jonsson and don't hesitate. He and his team will take excellent care of you and discuss different treatment options that will work for you. I was in need of another root canal but I was too scared to go again because of experiences at other offices. Dr. Jonsson made me feel immediately at ease at both my consult and my root canal appt. Just finished my appointment with Dr.Jonsson, and he is by far the best dentist I have ever had. He is extremely professional and accurately found out my problem within 5 minutes, then gave me some clear instructions for the next steps. The office is also very organized and the stuff are welcoming as well. I appreciate that they sent me the new patient's form electronically for me to fill out prior my appointment so this way it not only can save both side's time but other patient's time. You can say this review is long overdue! I had root canal done by a regular dentist in 2003. Oh boy, what a mistake and such long horrible experience. I had to do it again in 2005, but this time my new dentist recommended SVE. He said, they are the experts and the best around. He was right! It was a night and day difference. I could not believe the professionalism, the process, the tools they used during the procedure, things the previous dr. did not do. And it was so fast. I was in and out within 1 hour. Fast forward to 2020, what a year it was! One stressful night I woke up with my jaw so tight that I had broken several teeth. No job, no money, no insurance - I hold on until I was able to take care of it. New dentist, indicated that potentially I needed 2 root canals. One infected molar with an abscess and one with cavities close to the nerve. This dentist recommended an endodontics dr. in Dana Point. I set up the appointment with them, while I tried to find Saddleback Valley Endodontics. I did go to the appointment in Dana Point, and that dr. said I needed 2 root canals and actually wanted to do the not infected tooth first!!! Why? O Why? $$$$. I felt like I was in car showroom and he thought he was the salesman of the year. Finding SVE took a little bit of investigation, I did not remember where had I gone or the name of the doctor, or what year was that. I only remember that I took La Paz and the building. I look at pictures of the dental groups around the area and bingo! I called, they confirmed I was there in 2005. The dr. that performed that procedure had retired. Set up the appointment with Dr. Jonsson. The initial appointment was great, took the pictures, and I asked to double check the previous root canals since it had been some time. He said for sure I need 1 root canal as I did have an infection already and a hole in my bone. He gave me the name of a dentist to check the 2nd tooth and see if he can fix it without the root canal (fixed now, see review for dentist). Procedure day, I was nervous, will not deny it. The nurse and the doctor were really kind to me. They even gave me a blanket because I was cold! Dr. Jonsson asked if wanted to know what was happening, I said yes. He was explaining everything he was doing. Pretty cool, if you like to know details! Dr. Jonsson was really professional, honest, kind and patient, answered all my questions. Recommend Dr. Jonsson and Saddleback Valley Endodontics to anyone in need of a Root Canal. It was a pleasant experience! - A Root Canal! I was referred by my dentist to check a tooth which was causing me intermittent pain. Dr Jonsson and his team did an excellent job trying to recreate the "phantom pain" in my mouth. After a very thorough oral exam and studying multiple X-rays, Dr Jonsson made his recommendation to re-do an old root canal as the previous dentist missed a portion of the root. Zero transparency... they charged $400 for 10 minutes consultation and told us we need to pay upfront because it is their business policy...we have 2 different dental insurances (both are great insurances) however they both said the claim code is not covered by them... 400 for a quick less than 10 minutes consult... they make you pay upfront because they know insurance won't pay them. Over the last six years, I have had several root canals from both Dr. Jonsson and Dr. McNicholas. Both are just outstanding. Given the choice, I will never go anywhere else. I was very nervous because I've never had any issues with my teeth and only heard horror stories about how brutal this procedure is, but I was pleasantly surprised. Dr. McNicholas was great. I haven't been to the dentist in the last 20 years (over half my lifetime ago). Growing up, I had (and I feel that I still have) bad dental anxiety - and my gag reflexes are very sensitive. However, this past week I've developed a very bad infection on 2 neighboring molars that half of my face was affected by this pain. I'd say this was my worst pain to date. It became so unbearable that I decided to visit a dental practice - but they couldn't do root canals on molar teeth. So when they recommended Dr. Chu, at first I wasn't anticipating this visit because it was scheduled for 2 days later; I've been trying to get something scheduled ASAP. However, now that I just recently had the procedure, I must say it has been one of my best dental experiences ever! Dr. Chu was aware of my background, and he was very understanding throughout. My visit was unique because I had to get 2 root canals during the same visit (this was the remedy to my pain!). Long story, short - let's just say that I'm glad I toughened through the pain the extra 2 days. I thought I'd have to get sedated through this procedure, but I was awake the whole time and just had the numbing agents injected. Honestly, the final 30 min of the 1.5 hour procedure was my toughest, but I'm glad he was able to fully complete the procedure. His assistant went through the post-op with me, and advised that I'll still be in the same pain as prior to the procedure. However, 4 hours later and I barely have any pain! We brought our 10 year old grandson to SoCal for vacation and a trip to Disneyland. On day one he literally ran into a friend and the result was our grandson with a broken tooth. We were able to get him in to see a dentist who told us he needed to see a specialist. Thankfully they contacted Saddleback Valley Endodontics, the amazing staff got him in to see Dr Jonsson.
