I new to Pittsburgh. HAD a 22yr old cat. Constipated, went to SHVH. Cat urinated on the way there. Took cat to wash off. Dr. ??? ( never introduced herself) comes in w$1000+ EST on bloodwork.( for constipation) . Gave me a stool softener & something 4 pain $ 300+. Sent me on my way. ABSOLUTELY the worst VET, CARELESS VET I've ever seen in 50yrs. 15+ CATS I've owned.I've had this question come up twice this week so far, figured I'd share to the public to inform and clear up some misconceptions. IF YOU DON'T Spend $$$ ,they Do Not CARE!! Vet never even looked my cat & me in the same room. As far as I know, she just wanted me to Order the $ 1000 bloodwork.​​​​ 1 Day & I lost MITTENS . Puff my cat and I went to Safe Haven Urgent Care because his appetite wasn't good after his recent diabetes diagnosis. He just got out of the hospital last week. Repeat blood work was done and fluids were given. Dr K and her wonderful technician were the best medicine for him. Her tech showed me how to give fluids to him to keep him hydrated. He was able to eat so I could give him his full dose of insulin. Thank YOU Safe Haven for being there for us! read more

Our dog suddenly started having terrible bloody stool. We took her in and she was seen within 10 minutes and taken back for testing. They even arranged a same day ultrasound when the first tests weren't conclusive. They sent us home with medication that made her start to feel better the next day. The staff was friendly and showed our lab so much love. Thank you! read more

My sweet boy passed away yesterday. Please be careful taking your pet there. He was being treated for seizures for years. My primary veterinarian consulted with this practice, his liver functions became elevated, Dr. Peterson left him on medication for a year, before changing his medication. Which lowered the liver functions to normal levels. Then he developed Cushing syndrome, did well for 6 months on Vetroyl, one of the side affects is loss of appetite, e mail twice and went in for his appointment. He was over medicated. Not a nice office, changing staff. Does not listen to pet parents. Took him to Blue Pearl great staff. read more

Dr. Peterson is the BEST of the BEST. She is kind and knowledgeable and is able to figure out things that primary care vets miss. She is also very affordable. An ultrasound at Safe Haven costs about half what my primary care vet charges and probably 1/4 what PVSEC or Medvet charge. We've followed Dr. Peterson for years and are SO glad that she has her own practice now. We've been to Safe Haven's Urgent Care too and they were great. Even when a critical case came in the ER doctor stayed calm and collected and never made us feel like an afterthought. read more

I literally cannot put into words the gratitude I have for Dr. Peterson and Safe Haven. We got some unexpected and startling test results from our primary vet last week. Our next step was an ultrasound, but the big pet hospitals in the area were booked out several months. I kept calling and looking online and another vet recommended Safe Haven. When I called, I realized that it was Dr. Peterson, the internal medicine vet we saw a couple years earlier at PVSEC. I had a couple appointments scheduled and my regular vet told me to trust my gut and go with whoever I felt best with. I went with Dr. Peterson and am just so grateful. Safe Haven reached out to me the very same day my vet sent the referral over... a Saturday. Dr. Peterson saw us Wednesday. Her staff was so friendly and kind on the phone. They sent a thorough and purposeful intake form and I sent some additional information as well. I was VERY anxious on our way there. When we arrived? Gosh the environment is just so serene and calming. Like nothing I've ever experienced in a vets office? Actually more calming than some spa waiting rooms I've been in. We arrived early and were thankful to find a location with great sidewalks to walk on and grass to potty in. Obviously they can't help their surroundings, but it's a bit tricky to arrive somewhere with nowhere to walk. We took advantage of the time to go for a walk and let our dog stretch her legs after the long drive and also get out some energy/nerves that she had built up too. When we walked in, there was a small waiting room that was literally spotless? I'm allergic to shedding dogs and cats so always dread having to go vet offices... but literally? Nothing. On the other side of that door is a huge waiting room. With plenty of space for multiple people to be there and still have their own space. There is a thoughtful fridge with complimentary drinks which was convenient and generous. This space was also SPOTLESS. Not a single piece of pet hair on any of the furniture? No "dog" smell or urine odors... nothing. There was a giant tv playing under water reef videos playing incredibly relaxing music. The thing we noticed immediately was that the environment and "vibe" was different compared to the waiting rooms we've been in before. The office wasn't packed, it wasn't chaotic, there were no barking dogs. It was just calm. Serene. Peaceful. We knew right away we made the right choice. Our dog is hesitant with other pets approaching her so waiting rooms are always stressful for all of us. Since it's a private practice, there are only 2 exam rooms. When we arrived, there was 1 person in an exam room and we were the only 1s in the waiting room. That person left, we were seen... and when we left, there was 1 person in the waiting room. They weren't double booked. They weren't rushed. We didn't have to pass numerous paths with other people or pets. Dr. Peterson was incredibly thorough. She answered every question I had before I even had a chance to ask it. She also reviewed all the documents that I had sent over prior. She provided all the information and details necessary, she's absolutely brilliant and her demeanor is so kind, patient and calming. You can just tell that she genuinely cares about pets like they are her own. I never felt rushed. I felt like we were her only patient. The entire staff made us feel like we were the only appointment of the day. Everyone was so friendly and kind, to us and to our dog. For the first time since we got the unexpected results, I have hope. I feel like we have the very best overseeing her care and I'm so thankful to have found Dr. Peterson again. You will not be disappointed by the medical care or the experience. It's all top notch. read more

We love Dr Peterson. 5 years ago we were referred to her when our dog's regular vet couldn't figure out what was wrong with her. Dr Peterson took one look at everything and immediately diagnosed her medical condition that was causing her pain and medical problems. She has been wonderful and given our GSD the best care. She gladly answers all my questions and explains everything including options for treatment so we can make the best decisions for our GSD's care. DO NOT BRING YOUR PETS HERE. It pains me to write this out but everyone should know before choosing this place for your animals. We brought my 3 year old Grate Dane in with blood in her stole. Her heart rate was 200 beats per minute. We got an ultrasound and X-ray. They found nothing so they sent us home with diarrhea medication and told us to get Pepcid from the store. He told us to feed her a bland diet and we're good to go. Told us nothing but good news. The next morning my sweet angel passed away right in front of me. Ever since her passing they have been NOTHING but awful people. No compassion AT ALL. I had to drive 35 minutes back to the place just so I can get the email with her records. They assured me to send it immediately after our call and 2 weeks later I had to drive back just to receive her records. The CEO Greg told us if we would like the rest of our paperwork we would need a Subpoena from a JUDGE. I lost my whole world. She was our baby. They hung up on us multiple times trying to get answers. WORST EXPERIENCE IVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. The nightmare is still not over. Take my advice and go somewhere else. Greg owns the whole place and does not care about your pets. All he sees is money. I have a 19 minute long video of the whole conversation. He kicked us out and told us "good luck on your case" smiling cheek to cheek. Just because I wanted every piece of information they had on my baby for a second opinion. They told us this is a business we have to be worried about the money. They should worry about their job which was to take care of my girl. I can't change the past or I would of never gone to this pet hospital. If they didn't tell me she was fine and to go home I would of been at every vet I could find. They stole my last night with her from me. THE MAN PICTURED IS GREG THE CEO. He was the one that told us to get a subpoena. I am only posting this to let people know her story. Dr Peterson at Safe Haven has been such a delight to work with. I've been bringing her my medically complex cat, Milo, for almost a year. I brought him to her upon recommendation from both a family member and another specialist. Safe Haven is incredibly responsive to any questions and provides wonderful care to their patients. All of the medical professionals I've interacted with have been very kind, compassionate, and helpful. The techs have all been very attentive and excited to see Milo when he is in (it helps that he is the sweetest orange boy ever!). Dr Peterson personally types up the most detailed discharge sheets I have ever seen from any vet at any hospital. This facility is truly a gem. I also had one of my cats at urgent care a few weeks ago, and the team in that building was wonderful as well. I would recommend Safe Haven to anyone. read more

I have worked with both Dr. Peterson and Dr. Cloonan for my dog Lil and would recommend this hospital to anyone. They went above and beyond to make sure my nervous baby felt safe when she was feeling her worst with pancreatitis levels that just kept rising and an irritable bowel flare up we couldn't get under control. This was our worst nightmare because we lost our last dog to pancreatitis and were afraid it was going to happen again. They were very understanding, very thorough, took time to make sure we were informed, and answered all of our questions and did not once make us feel pressured into any of the decisions we made. Jeff was also super helpful in helping set up her follow up ultrasound appointment. They were very affordable compared to my other option of going to local emergency hospitals - keep in mind this is MY experience and that any type of urgent care pricing can vary depending on the diagnosis, diagnostics needed, and measures taken to care for your baby! - and sometimes the ER is the best place for them. We are now also on a specialized diet at their recommendation, and in turn her irritable bowel and pancreatitis are now under control! I took my Pomeranian here with an injured leg, never been there before. While I was sitting on the floor with my dog the vet Dr. Brendan Cloonan quickly reached out but I stopped him and asked him to let my dog sniff him. Apparently this frightened the vet who then proceeded to quickly grab my dog by his harness and drag him across the floor. Not only did he grab the harness but also a handful of fur and my dog's leg was injured. So of course my poor dog let out a pretty good yelp. I did get my dog away from him, picked him up and handed him to the vet. My dog doesn't bite, never bit anyone even when in pain. Dr. Brendan Cloonan needs to either learn how to be gentle with injured animals or get out of vet medicine. I'll never take my dog to this place! My regular vet recommended this place due to it being after her hours and I'll make sure to let her know exactly how rough this vet was with my dog. read more
