Bottom line up front: this place is a clean and well stocked grocery store. I have to admit after reading through a few of the negative comments I see about Safeway I am surprised. I have been going to this particular Safeway since the Shoppers in Annapolis closed over a year ago. Yes sometimes the prices are a little bit more expensive than the other less expensive grocery stores, but it appears that the products are fresh and the prices are reasonable. Let's make one thing clear it's not Wagmans or any specialty store, it is a good old fashion grocery store with an meat market, bakery, and produce department. You won't find many exotic products, but you will find the necessities always seem to be in stock and available. During the Covid crisis part one toilet paper was running low everywhere, this particular Safeway seem to find a way to keep toilet paper in the hands of its value customers. I can understand how some of the employees may not look totally excited to be at work, it is a rough job with limited appreciation from customers and poor pay from corporate America. But let's give them a break they are doing the best they can. Thank them once in awhile, they have gotten us through this pandemic. read more

Don't get a delivery from here. Stolen groceries, out of date groceries. They charge you before you get your groceries and if there is a problem you have to wait for your money to be refunded. Most of the time you don't get what you order! read more

This store has been remodeled and it is excellent! I wasn't planning on stopping here but I was next door...the imported foods section is AWESOME! A full aisle of everything needed for international cooking! The refreshed floral department is beautiful and the bakery and deli are stocked full of delicious items. So glad instopped in and I'll be back! read more

This review is being written during the COVID19 pandemic. Decided to stop in after visiting the Best Buy next door. It was pretty Coronavirus-proofed up. All of the employees wore masks and gloves. The registers had plexy-glass shields and even the debit/credit card swipe machine was covered in plastic! pretty awesome. It seemed a bit disorganized inside, but it's a massive store. After a few passes, I was able to find what I needed. And as a bonus, I found plenty of jumbo paper towels, so of course I had to pick up that golden ticket item! The store was a bit dark on the inside, maybe the lights were dimmed? Anyway, it had everything I needed, and the lines were not long or slow. read more

The worst customer service in Annapolis may be found at this Safeway on Housley Road. Today, I was yelled at by a store manager who, while I was trying to explain that I needed to return a product, then yelled at me when she couldn't understand me -BECAUSE SHE WAS TALKING OVER ME-what the real problem was. I shopped at this Safeway for the first time today. I found it quite difficult to get around in. They are using directional signs for the aisles, and some shoppers are trying to follow those. But the huge number of standing racks on the floor, with seasonal merchandise, specials, etc make it extremely hard to move around and maintain appropriate social distancing. The cashier was very nice. But I will not hurry back to this location. read more

I visited this location on 1/9/2022 in order to get my C booster. The process of getting the booster was painless, and expecting hours of waiting, was pleasantly surprised to get my shot within 20 min of my appointment time. All this despite there only being one poor pharmacist behind the counter helping customers and giving boosters. The shelves were quite empty, but I'll blame that on our current supply chain issues. That being said, OMG the bathrooms. They were so disgusting, and worse, neither had any soap. Yes, I entered the men's room, hoping to wash my hands. It's bad enough that one can infer emplyees aren't washing hands after using the facilities, but we are in a bad outbreak of Covid, and that means NO ONE using the facilities can wash their hands. I ended up pushing my cart with my elbows up to the entrance and a fellow shopper sprayed disinfectant on a paper towel for me to clean up. Do better Safeway. Or don't - I'll not be back. read more

After paying at the self check-out area, we were chased by a Safeway staff who accused us of not paying. We showed her the receipt. This is very upsetting for a retired person. This was not the first time that we received this type of treatment at the Housley Road Safeway. read more

I stop here on my way in to work and so do my co-workers. Stopped in this morning at 7:50am and NO DONUTS put out at the bakery. Staff walking around taking their time. The time for the bakery is advertised from 7am to 7m. My co-worker has stopped by in the morning a couple of times for a fresh bagel and NO BAGELS!! What the heck!! Folks on there way into work are the ones who are looking for these items for meetings and such. I would say this is poor management at this bakery. read more

There is no place I hate more than this Safeway. Without fail, they are always out of at least three items on my list. Also have tons of expired dairy products out. Be sure to check!! Just when you think it can't get any worse it does. They have locked the bathrooms. Yep. This is actually one of the cleaner safeways, having come from the classic 'theres a chance I might die here tonight' Safeways of Baltimore. I think the selection is weak compared to Giant, Safeway still hasn't figured out self-checkout, and the poor cashiers even ask able-bodied 20-somethings if they need help carrying 2 bags of groceries to the car. Plain and simple, I really like shopping here a lot. It is definitely an experience to come here. The store is always super clean and well stocked from fresh fruits to delicious bakery items. No doubt, they are much more expensive than Shoppers and Trader Joe's. Getting the Safeway Club can solve some of those differences but not all. One thing I have learned the last month about this particular location is never come here on a Sunday night. Talk about a wait, they go down to one cashier and only leave open 2 self check out lines. As you can imagine, a line can form pretty quickly if you have more than 5 customers waiting to check out! This past visit last night incurred a 10 minute wait. May not seem like long but I ask myself do I want to spend the remaining awake hours of my weekend stuck in line at Safeway??? Hell no!!! When I come back it will be when there are more cashiers and open self check out lines available! read more

This pharmacy is literally the worst in the history of pharmacies. Ever. I have been using them for years, but in the past year I do not think more than 1 or 2 out of my multiple prescriptions has been correct or filled without incompetence. I think the worst part about it is the "automated system" they use to call and tell you when your prescription is ready. I do not know what formula they use to determine when someone is called, but it definitely is not based upon readiness of a prescription. My husband has been called in to collect 2+ prescriptions in the past few months that weren't ready. I have had this happen 4 times since November now. I received a random call stating my prescription was ready and had no idea what it was because I hadn't refilled anything. I called them--they had no idea why I was called because there was no sign of it. When it came time to actually refill my prescription a few weeks later, it wouldn't allow me to because it had already been filled. I never got a real call telling me it was ready so who knows how long it sat there. Fast forward to this week when my doctor called in a pretty important prescription for me for a trip I am taking out of the country. He said he would ensure it would be ready Friday, as I was supposed to start taking it ASAP. I got the call from Safeway that it was in on Friday as promised---went to pick it up and NOPE. They told me to come back at 4:30 yesterday (which was Monday--3 days after I was supposed to get my medicine). So I received another call that it was ready yesterday. I went back to the store at 5, knowing it would be there since I received a call AND was also told it would be there after 4:30. Again, NOPE. Nothing was anywhere to be found and they assured me they would call the warehouse to sort it out. At this point, I do not feel super confident about this. I apologize for the length of this, but the bottom line is please, please do not take important prescriptions there. I am out a prescription I needed to start taking over the weekend and I still haven't been called with any type of solution almost 20 hours later. Not to mention the lady in front of me in the line seemingly was given the wrong medication. AND they are constantly changing my husband's pills around and do not tell him (I guess the generics switch or something), so frequently when he opens a new bottle the pills look different and that causes alarm. Seriously. I haven't had a good or even remotely decent experience here in months. Save yourselves. read more

On 2/28/18, I shopped there and checked out on register 2, helped by an employee named Charlotte. I forgot to get my Easter cards--quite a lot of them--and didn't realize it until that evening. I was told they had not been turned in when I called, but was told to come in and I'd be allowed to pick up the same cards at no charge to me with my receipt. I came in to do that and went to the service desk to gladly find out that Ms. Charlotte had turned in my cards. Thanks to Safeway and Ms. Charlotte for doing the right thing. read more

This is the second time I've shopped here in a week, as it's close by. I have the distinct feeling I'm being treated differently because of my race. They were very chatty with a woman of color before me. The deli women were barely civil, made me feel like I was bothering them- no thank you or smile- very wooden expressions. Very unhelpful. I asked if the sale price would show up after my club card was scanned, and she made me feel like an idiot. I thought it a perfectly legit question. To top it off, I asked for 3/4 lb of meat and she cut .98 pound. She didn't ask if it were ok, just wrapped it and handed it to me in silence. She's either rude or ignorant of how much 3/4 lb is. Today the bored cashier barely acknowledged me, leaning against the wall, I forced her to say hello by smiling and saying hello. She spoke in monosyllables, no smile. She handed me the receipt while looking somewhere else and said thank you have a nice day while continuing to look to the side. I felt like she hated ringing me up and wanted me to go on my way. I really feel unwelcome here and like the staff needs classes in customer service. I'll take my business elsewhere even if it's further. read more

It's Safeway. It's a rather new Safeway (no sushi bar?!*) and yet underneath the lovely flower shop, Starbucks and "norm", I have to comment that not once but twice I've tried the deli for lunch and at normal lunch hours my chicken tenders (same item twice just to be sure) were dried out and should have been sold only discounted if at all. The deli counter is a bit dismal and the salad bar is the least appealing I've seen in recent memory. It is the closest grocer to my home but it is far from the best. The employees are awesome when they interact with older customers they have obviously been serving for many years but this Safeway is not a good representation of the grocer as a whole in my experience. If you're going to charge premium prices that are comparable or higher than Whole Foods or Fresh Market, you need to present the appeal and quality as well. read more

The most horrible safeway i have ever been! Twice it happened to me that the prices were punched wrong by the cashier. I let it go twice! I still go here because it is the nearest supermarket from home. But then there was this incident, I was given a receipt that's blank! Are you serious?????? The cashier dint inform me ahead that his station prints blank receipt. I could have just let it go but i felt that i paid more that what i ought to! So i came back to ask for a printed receipt and it took forever for the supervisor on duty to print a receipt. After 20mins, she came back with 4 copy paper with my printed transactions. And they're 4 copies of the same thing and it didnt have all my transactions! I was soo frustrated. I just had to return all my grocery and had a refund. Read signs carefully. They are notorious for "filling in" extra stock in empty slots, reflecting different prices than they actually cost. I've had several instances where this happened, and after several return trips to the store after examining my receipt, I'm only told that they can refund me for the products if I don't want them, but they will not honor the labeled price. They just rip the tag off after you point it out to them and tell you "too bad". I wouldn't complain about it if it weren't an every week occurrence. read more

Compare the food pricing of Safeway to Whole Foods across the mall and Fresh Market, Safeway prices seem to be in line and higher with WF and FM; but the food at Safeway is not even the same quality food you'll find in WF and FM. There are rarely enough employees scheduled on any given day at any given time. Frequently the line at the one available register will be 6 or 7 deep. The self check is sloooooowwwwww and frequently freezes because it thinks you've picked something up or put something down when you actually haven't. The person running the self check is usually the same person working the customer service desk,meaning they could be selling lottery tickets or renting out a carpet cleaner while you wait to get the self check station unlocked. Often, most of the carts are out in the parking lot. Frequently, all of the hand baskets are stacked at one entrance, leaving the other entrance completely without. They are often out of the most illogical things, like corn on the cob, in summer, when everyone else has huge bins of it. And it's expensive compared to other grocery stores in the area. Most of the employees are cordial but overworked given the short-staffing, and sometimes their aggravations show. I don't blame them though, that is management's fault for not hiring enough people or having enough on the schedule. The store must still be on dial-up or DSL because the credit card readers are very, very slow. I can scan 10 items at the self check in less time than it will take me to finish paying using the card reader. And the card readers are poorly mounted, almost like they were an afterthought. The only thing this place has going for it for me is convenience. read more

I like this grocery store and find overall it best suits my family's shopping needs. They have regular sales and if you shop sales you may do better here than elsewhere (ala Shoppers). The freshness and quality has always been great - it is not a Trader Joe's but the store is clean, staff friendly, store well stocked and with consistently good sales on a variety of items. This is the worse Safeway around. My biggest issue is their deli. Every single time I go there I have to wait forever for service. Last time I went there was another woman waiting who said she'd been there over 5 mins. Not one of the deli workers even acknowledged us. It's not like they were super busy, We were the only two customers there. I looked around and they had 6 people working. 6. Not one on the counter. One was fooling around at the hot food case, one was stirring the salads, one wiping down counters, one was sweeping and so on. It was the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. I finally asked if anyone was waiting on the counter and a young girl looked at me like I was crazy and said someone will be with you soon. WHAT? Stop sweeping the damn floors and wait on your customers. I just walked away at this point. This happens to me every single time I go there. I did send a message to corporate and received a nice VM back from the store manager asking me to call and discuss the poor customer service issues so I did call back. Twice. I was put on hold both times by customer service for over 10 mins each so both times I just hung up the phone. I just go to the Crofton location now. Much better service. read more

I have gone here for years--many because I pass it on the way to other places. It seems like staffing has gone downhill of late. One time I encountered a very long line with only one check out lane open. Finally, one of the customers went wandering around the store to find someone to open an additional lane. A recent trip required one cashier and two supervisors to get me through the the check-out lane. Apparently some sales items require the cashier to get a supervisor to approve the discount. Much delay and waiting. Supervisor not happy with this. I guess they cannot trust their cashiers. I like the bakery, deli is lame, butcher is good. Fruits and veggies ok. This is the worst grocery store you could possibly choose. Please do yourself a favor and go to Giant at Forest Drive. 1. At this particular Safeway they quite often try to cheat the customer by putting discount stickers on produce, but when you actually arrive at the register and are not paying attention, you will be paying the full price. This literally happens EVERY time I shop there. I got so tired of this B*S that I started writing down prices and showing all of these discrepancies to the manager. Such a joke. Just this last time I bought a green cabbage that showed $2.49 each, but at the register it charged me $5.04! Each pepper showed $1.25, but at the register it was $1.69! Tomatoes showed $1.99, but at the register scanned $2.99! And this is in just 1 shopping visit. 2. They also once sold me a box of cookies that was 2 years expired! They refunded me, but c'mon, 2 years?! Is there ANY quality control at all there? 3. Their self checkout registers are so awful that you need a checkout assistant for every other scan. What's funny is that it starts by asking if you brought your own bag. Even if you selected "Yes" and then placed the bag in the bag area, the register will stop scanning and you will need the assistance of a Safeway worker, which is often enough nowhere to be found. 4. I was so tired of using their terrible self checkouts one night that I decided to use the full service lane since the cashier seemed to have nothing to do anyways. Boy did I regret it! It first started with her not liking my reusable bag, which was "too dirty". She advised me that I should never place meat in it and then not wash it (I am vegetarian and NEVER buy any meat for ANY occasion). Because she was elderly, I did not say anything. Then she proceeded to wrap my raspberries in 3(!!!) plastic bags. When I noted to her that the reason I brought my reusable bag was to save plastic bags, she proceeded to instruct me that if the raspberry container opens up, I will lose all of my berries. She then wrapped my blackberries and strawberries the same way as well. I was so pissed when I left that store it makes my blood boil even now as I am writing it. 5. Just called their pharmacy to have my prescription transferred: 4 calls, no answer. The pharmacy doesn't close for another 4 hours... All in all, you got the picture. Is it really worth going there? Giant is only a couple of minutes away. Even better - Trader Joe's is closer, much cheaper and better quality than both Safeway or Giant. read more

Every other time I go, and I go every week, the stock is different or lacking completely in store brand that is significantly cheaper for most people. They only ever have a minimal amount of registers open. Most of the cashiers either are very slow, bag things really badly, or have a horrible attitude. They also have stuff to stock shelves all over the isles right in front of the shelves in the middle of some of the most busy shopping days. But hey, their meats are the best around when they have everything. read more
