This Safeway seems to be getting worse each month. I no longer even attempt to shop here. It is a shame. I end up paying more at Raley's. There is a serious lack of checkers at all times of the day. I have walked out several times recently after shopping because of huge lines. I have walked in and left right away for the same reason. Also, the few times I have gone to the service desk for help was a cruel joke. There is no help. Raley's has none of these problems but you will pay more. read more

I purchased several items from there reduced frozen food section. After consuming one of the items i became ill throughout the next day. Trying to think of what made me ill i looked at the expiration dates on the packages i food i just bought. Here is what i found... Out of the items i purchased. Three boxes of Jimmy D Sausage Dou's expired in Feb (these made me sick). Two boxes of Don Miguel Breakfast Empanadas expired in July. Three boxes of Bob Evans Breakfast Burritos expired in August. Now heres the kicker. Almost all the boxes had the expiration dates covered with the reduction sticker! So they knew they were selling expired products. My only complaint with this Safeway is the ridiculous long lines. They NEVER have baggers which is just crazy and if something does not ring up right...pandemonium. They can call till there blue in the face for a price check!!! Raley's tends to more expensive but they always have baggers and are way more organized. 2 stars for the convenience. The thing about safeways is that they always seem understaffed in the deli and bakery departments during peak hours. Today was no exception, but one thing that prompted me to write this review was the fact that the company updated their register software today without properly training their staff. I had a girl start her shift at the deli to cater to me and 6 other patrons in line, and she had to excuse everyone because she did not receive proper training for the "new" register software. It was great that extra help finally arrived, but what good is the help if they don't know how to use the machines? read more

What is with Safeway stores in this area, they NEVER, NEVER have enough cashiers, and get this Safeway, if you want me to do my own checkout, give me a freaking discount!! It takes less time to drive to Pleasant Hill or Concord to Trader Joes that wait in line here and Glen Cove is getting just as bad!!! read more

The people that work here are friendly enough. Sadly they don't hire enough people to accommodate the traffic though and customers are made to wait longer then they should have to. I literally stood in line 20 minutes yesterday! They usually have 2-3 lanes open and one bagger to be seen. Many have suggested a self check out but they say they have no room. If they took out half of the registers they never use there would be room. Could be they don't have the money to make the change and/or hire more staff? Many people are taking their business elsewhere just due to this. I see the reviews are poor from many on here and on our local site. The manager should be paying attention and directing to corporate to get some changes made. I hope they do soon. read more

Having been raised in Benicia most of my formative teenage years, Safeway has always been the lessr of the two grocery stores in town. Before the renovation, the place always seemed to have a mildew smell. I would have thought that after the remodel and retooling that the smell would have been eradicated. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case. The deli department is slow and inattentive, produce department is mediocre, and the checkers persistent to make their donations bonus. The price differentiation between Raleys and Safeway is not enough for me to overlook the quality of service provided. How I wish there was a Trader Joe's! read more

Customer service is awful. While shopping there today an employee made it very clear that I was in his way in the produce dept. A short time later another employee decided to straighten the cheese cases while I was looking for something. He just stepped in front of me and acted like I was invisible never saying a word to me. When I was ready to check out the only line open was the 15 items or less check stand. When I mentioned this to the clerk he sighed, picked up the phone and asked for another clerk, then slammed the phone down and turned his back to me without a word. I waited at the front of the store for another 5 minutes before a clerk showed up and she took customers from the 15 items line leaving me standing there in disbelief. Stock is also a problem. They run out of the Safeway brand honey wheat berry bread very quickly but do they increase the order? No, they continue to order the same quantities and instead fill the shelves with other types that just sit there. What are you people thinking? Whoever is managing this store is doing a terrible job. read more

Patrick (tall, black, grey hair, male) is a checker he was extremely rude I walked up to the counter to buy my wine I smiled and said hello to him he didn't respond at all not even a smile he hand gestured to me that he needed my ID I handed that to him he did not give me the Safeway discount right away until my friend mentioned it I paid and took my receipt. As I was walking away he said "Have a nice-" He did not even finish the sentence! I've never had an experience like this at Safeway before I will also bring this to corporate! read more

I just moved to Benicia . I've always been a faithful Safeway shopper but I might just have to change grocery stores . The first time I shopped at this Safeway the lines were horrible . There was two lanes open with about 10 people in each lane ! Yesterday I decided to give this Safeway a second chance . Same thing happened . There was only 2 lanes open with huge lines . Not only that but the cashier looked unhappy and he didn't smile once or bother to ask us how we are doing ( like most cashiers at other safeways do ) I will not be coming back. So last week I went to the Starbucks inside Safeway and ask for cash back with my purchase. When I got to work I realized that I didn't get my cash back. I called and was told just to come to customer service when I got back into town. Tessa was at customer service I explained to her what had happened and she was great she pulled the til and sure enough it was over $10. She gave me my cash back and for my trouble she also gave me a gift card. This Safeway always gets a bad wrap because the "lines are long" but to be honest they have the BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE. read more

This store is going downhill fast. Lack of employees really reflects on the store and the few employees that are there. Today their produce was horrible and they were out of a lot of product in general. I usually avoid the deli simply because it's way under staffed and the staff who are there suck, or are new and you can tell they don't want to be there. Safeway is filthy, poorly lit, rude employees...all in all dirty dirty dirty place! I complained about the milk coolers after being horrified by the amount of mold, thick build up of milk that has spilled on the shelving, floors, and jugs. The smell of rotting milk is what clued me in. Nothing has been cleaned nearly six months later. The meat dept. shares the produce dept. and again the smell is unbelievable. They have rotten produce on the shelves, expired pre packed produce...oh yeah, they are so overdue for a health inspection. Now the dim lighting makes sense though...if you can't see the mold on what you're buying... YUCK! It's amazing to me that more people haven't gotten sick from buying their filthy food. Employees having extremely private conversations in the isles while they are supposedly working(late night drinking escapades, etc.), looking at me crossly as if I'm intruding on them while trying to get by. Messy shelves...kids meds intertwined with adult meds., searching all over the place to find what I need. I love Raleys, clean, friendly staff but wow expensive! So now I take the time to drive to American Canyon to Super Walmart rather than take my chances at Safeway. Walmart doesn't mark their groceries up and they have everything I need in a clean, well lit environment. read more

Good to grab stuff after work. Close to the First Street area so its perfect for picking up the giant sandwiches for a picnic on the water front. Personally I like Raleys better, but this place gives close competition. The worst thing about this store is that the check out lines take forever to get through, but I have found that it is a normal thing at any Safeway I have been to. read more

I receive a Gift card every year for 50 dollars. When I went into use it this year the clerk told me all I could use was 24 dollars , even though the resister tape show that there was 26 dollars left. Made me talk with the manager. Had to get out of line and talk to the Manager. was told that the clerk was right and given a hard time. Basically I was treated poorly took more of my time than they should have and never apologized for anything they did. Benicia only has two grocery stores so either I go to Vallejo or the Relays. read more

Safeway is killing me, I love the store. I know where everything is and I do think it is less expensive than others but for almost the last year there is rarely more than 2 checkers on at a time. It has definitely gotten to the point that I have been willing to pay more just to get in and out of the store quicker. read more

If you're planning on going to Safeway: 1. Plan twice as much time as you think you will need 2. If your list contains something you would get at Whole Foods, forget it 3. Make sure your car insurance is up to par, the parking lot is chaos 4. Make sure your healthcare coverage is adequate, the parking lot is chaos 5. Beware of small-talk and awkward conversation. It's usually what holds up the Express Lane 6. Short lines take the longest, normally due to the regulars trying to return things or explain how they "forgot to pay" 7. Do not attempt to "get-in and get-out" it just isn't happening 8. If it's something you absolutely need, they probably don't have it 9. The evening is the worst time to go, they usually only have 2-3 checkouts open 10. Just go to Raley's. Every time I build up the courage to go to Safeway, I kick myself. And if you're anti-social, in a hurry or know what you want in life, you can use their self-checkout. read more

I don't know whats up with the negative reviews. Ive only been to this Safeway three times one the last couple years (I dont live in benicia.) This last time I did some grocery shopping on my way back home, this store was on the way. While I was looking through the yogurt section for what I usually buy a lady named Christina (or Christine?) asked if I needed help. Since I couldn't find what I wanted (Fage 2% greek yogurt [20grams protien in 8oz. Crazy awesome]) she offered to look in storage for me. They didn't have any, but dang that was really kind of her. Never had service like that at a Safeway before. Even in the checkout line the cashier (her nametag said lovely?) Helped me grab all my bags. I never use a cart so I always find a way to carry it all... I walk up a flight of stairs to get in, I dont like making multiplie trips. I appreciate the gesture. Thanks homies. read more

So impressed with this Safeway and Roberto in particular. We were loading our groceries into the car, forgot our bags but were clear that the groceries could be loaded directly into the cart. We are two self sufficient adult and could handle with no problem. ROBERTO saw my daughter load infant Grandson into he car. He immediately started loading for us. I have lived in Benicia for 2 years and have frequented this Safeway many times and the only good thing I have to say about it is that the staff is friendly. The prices are ridiculously high as compared to other Safeway's I visit on occasion and especially compared to the discount grocery stores such as Winco and Food Max. The ground beef and ham I have purchased here have water added to them for weight as it can be easily seen when cooking these meats. I don't understand how the Safeway in Pleasanton for example can have much lower prices than this one. I only go here now when it's late and I have no other choice. read more

My husband and I are, or used to be, strictly safeway shoppers. We recently moved from concord to benicia and we have a raleys literally within walking distance from where we live. We were going to continue our safeway shopping until I read all of the really bad reviews on yelp. We stuck with good ol' expensive raleys...and target, of course. My dad and I decided to stop by this safeway specifically for coffee filters and ended up spending about 100 for thanksgiving stuff. This was the safeway I remember. I am I months pregnant so if something smells or looks bad, it really smells or looks bad to me and I didn't notice anything that would prevent me from shopping there. I was a little taken aback by the lack of baggers...not enough of an issue to stop me from shopping there. Overall, it's safeway and it's benicia. read more

Horrible service. There were two lines open tonight at 9 o'clock at night with two people ahead of me. The checker, Frankie waited on one lady with just ice cream. That ONE transaction alone took 10 minutes !! There was a Person, apparently on break,in line right in front of me buying one item. That transaction took three or four minutes. It took 17 minutes just to get my few groceries because the coworker and Frankie were talking so very much that Frankie the checker could not pay attention !! And did not seem to care. Awful place. I keep saying I'm never coming back to the store. And this time just proves it's just not worth it!!! read more

I am usually compelled to come here (since it's closer) but no longer: I will be going to Raleys from now on. Some of the staff is rude, and it's rare to have more than 2 checkstands open at a time (even during peak hours). The store is dark, cramped, and messy. Quality produce gives them 2 stars, but even then the selection is better at Raleys. read more

I was waiting in line and Moe came over to have me come in her line, she was so happy. It's nice to shop in a store with such great customer service. She was so nice and was so nice to my girls. I like this store. I also love the girls in the deli, they are always helpful! (Wish I remembered their names so I could say exactly which ones) they went out of their way to explain what was in some of the things in the salads. read more

I LOVE the bakery at this Safeway in Benicia. They made my grandsons wedding cake on such short notice, and it was absolutely beautiful!! Sara the decorator did an amazing job and the cake was delicious, moist and favorable. The bakery manager made it all possible. Thank you for making his day complete and stress free. read more
