Once again this is for the bakery. Two years in arrow they have produced a great cake for a super reasonable price.

Totally love this Safeway. Lived in Benicia for decades. Some years there was drama with employees I did not want to know, other years, it was friendly and quiet. Because I am disabled, I am noticed by others -- either to stare at, or, to ask, "what's wrong with you?", etc. What do the employees at this store notice? That I am looking at the ingredients on a particular product, and they ask, "have you used/eaten this before? It is comparable to these products, and we can provide a comparison-ingredients list, if you would like." Or, "would you like help carrying that case of water? Can I get you a basket?" Or, "this will be on sale tomorrow, if you want to come back then." Or even, "I can wait until you are checked out and help you get these bags into the trunk. Don't even worry that your bags say 'Lunardi's' -- you're still saving the environment!" The cakes are AWE. SOME. The deli is good. There is the occasional employee who is tired, or confused, but given all, it is a great place. My favorite employee is Tony. He has been checking for a long time, has a dry, quirky sense of humor, and nearly always remembers me. Thanks, for being there for my kids and me. We live somewhere there are no Safeways, and we miss you a lot. read more

Friendly of service here. They like to talk, which slows down the lines. So if you are in a rush, go to the self check out.

DO NOT BUY YOUR BERRIES HERE! I bought some blueberries here and when I got home to eat them they had mold on some of the berries. Partially my fault for not checking before I threw it in my shopping cart..but I've always trusted Safeway so lesson learned. Funny thing is I've seen mold growing on their strawberries before so I just didn't buy it and walked away. I even reached for the berries way in the back and still had the same disgusting result. Not shopping here any more, and I don't know what else they have that's been sitting around but they need to invest in better quality control...I will definitely drive a little farther to get to Raleys now, and they have better customer service anyway. read more

This place is terrible. Everything's a mess. Understaffed with rude individuals. Poor manners, customer service, you name it. Undermanned. Takes 30 mins to get a sandwich, don't even get me started on how long it takes to check out. Only thing I like here are the flowers. Would rather go to the freshly remodeled Raley's with quality employees, excellent products & the leisure/convenience of self-checkout. read more

Okay, its as good as any other that I have shopped at. Prices could be a bit more reasonable, but there is better selection than Grocery Outlet and it is convenient to my commute to Benicia. Long lines - All the time. Fair produce. Great people.

I am not usually a fan of Safeway. Any Safeway. So this would typically be a 1 star review but today was different. Maybe it was the ladies I stood near in line who were sweet and friendly, it sure wasn't the lines that wrapped this way and that way with no end in sight but what really did it for me today was the fact that I saved $6 bucks on some sausage. Ever since Raleys remodeled their prices have also had an overhaul, influx, they're just plain expensive. So today Safeway lucked out with 3 stars and I happily stood in the longest line imaginable, in the smelly store, on the filthy floor, being ignored, with a smile on my face. I love Safeway, but, this store location needs to do some more training. It is 2018. No one should have to be followed through every aisle of the store while grocery shopping. The store is always busy and no one ever opens another checkout line. never again. read more

I hate to say it but my friendly nearby Safeway just has not been the same for over a year now. It's poorly stocked, not as clean and there are almost always long lines. Been shopping there for 16 years and a very faithful customer. I now cringe when I remember I have a few items to get because I know there's no telling how long it will take me to get out of there. Remember some staff used to complain about the old manager that used to be there for years until I am told medical issues made him take a leave of absence. Though this manager was the smiley, over welcome type the man did know how to run a store. The place was clean, stocked and always plenty of cashiers . I miss the old Safeway. read more

The store is cramped, cluttered, and disorganized. The parking lot is as well. There is a poor product selection, with most of the limited shelf space dominated by house brands, assuming anything is in stock at all. Strangely, this store has grown substantially over the past few decades, yet it feels smaller than ever inside. The prices are also quite poor unless you opt-in to their data collection club, which they push on you at the check stand like a Best Buy salesman selling an extended warranty. The lines are always long with few check stands open. The checkers are always slow, with the only thing slower being the customers. If you want to be stuck for 10 minutes behind old ladies counting nickles and section 8'ers trying to figure out how to pay by combining coupons, food stamps, and second hand checks, this is the place to go. One look at the typical clientele will make you wonder if you accidentally wandered into the DMV. This place would give peopleofwalmart a run for its money. It gets bumped from one to two stars because I've actually had to start shopping here due to the most recent and worst ever product de-stocking Raley's has engaged in. Yes, Safeway actually has common, every day products that Raley's does not anymore. read more

First of all, no automatic check-out lanes. Big bummer because they are always crowded and a lot of the times when I shop here, it's slammed. They never restock the store. Most of the time when I'm here, they are out of the items I need and Raleys prices are outrageous. I started going back over the bridge to shop back at the Martinez Safeway. I have to pay toll and drive a ways but it's worth it. I like downtown Martinez, it's like driving into an 80's time warp where people are still watching the A-Team on TV and wearing acid wash jeans. I don't know what the other folks are talking about. This store is neat and clean and the staff are always friendly and courteous. I also like the fact that you don't have panhandlers waiting for you outside at this store! The people in Benicia must be truly spoiled and/or entitled if they rate this store poorly. Yes, sometimes the lines get a little long but plan your day accordingly and you won't get flustered. I have actually shopped here the day before Thanksgiving and was so very pleased with the items available in stock and how quickly I was checked out of the store. Love your store! read more

I got food poisoning from frozen food purchased at Safeway in Benicia. First package swelled up to the point of near bursting while it was in my freezer! Took it back and Colleen, floor manager very graciously said to replace it. Which I did but with a different meal, same brand. That one had been frozen, thawed, and frozen again. I noticed this after opening the package. Once again I took it back and got a third one. I threw up the entire night and was sick the following day. I called Safeway and they were concerned enough to notify the Safeway headquarters. It took the head office a long time to contact me. I left them several messages. They finally got back to me 3 weeks after the incident and were very rude about it. They said they would compensate me $10 dollars, that's right, ten dollars! Which I never received. Also I was told that the manufacture of the frozen meal, Bertollies, would be informed and would get a hold of me. They never did. While at Safeway I noticed the doors to the frozen foods were open and the alarms were sounding for quite some time. I was the one who shut the doors. Another problem I have with shopping there is the horrible, gross smell that is always present by the meat/fish department. I was told this was normal from the cleaning they do at night. This is not normal. Other stores do not have this offensive order. Seriously, I cannot breath on that side of the store. read more

This probably falls on "deaf ears" because this is a corporation but this store is the WORST. There are never enough checkers, the meat selection is atrocious and the deli is even worse! The checkers they do have are usually super chatty and don't work very fast. The deli always seems understaffed and running around like they don't know what to do, or who to help. Deepak made my sandwich today, put it in the toaster and walked off to help someone else. Never came back. The other lady working was too busy flirting with a customer to help. Total time to get a sandwich was 15 flipping minutes! I'll never come back. Ever. I hope this store gets bought out and restaffed. The only people that help you in this store are the sushi ladies and the Asian lady in the bakery. Their employees work on the hour and are obviously protected by the union. I'd rather give my money to Raley's. read more

The one star is being kind. I've had many problems with this Safeway location for some time now. I don't usually write Yelp reviews but I'm so upset with my Safeway experience I don't know what else to do. The woman making my sandwich didn't hear me say I wanted tomatoes and when I politely reminded her she responded with major attitude saying I never asked for them. Completely taken aback I decided to walk away from my transaction with her and pay at the front cash registers. After waiting in line for thirty minutes, this is where Desiree "helped" me. She was by far the rudest person I have ever come across working in customer service. Having worked at Costco most my adult life I typically have a bleeding heart for anyone dealing with the general public but nope not anymore! Desiree and the sandwich lady ruined my happy mood I was in when I entered the store. Its a shame I live within walking distance and now have to go spend more money at Raley's. Get it together Safeway! Maybe start training your staff on how to be decent to paying patrons! read more

I'm not sure if this review will get through to corporate or management, I highly doubt it. But I find myself compeled to say something since we really don't have many choices on groceries in town. First, most of the employees are amazing. Excellent customer service, super friendly and helpful. With that being said.... -It seems like everytime I go there they are out of nearly everything. Milk, none stocked, meat, only scraps left, eggs, they haven't had hardly any in a week now. Mostly all of their dry goods that are on sale are wiped out completely within two days or less after going on sale. So that tells me either they aren't stocking the shelves or they are having ordering issues. This is really annoying. Some things I understand, but eggs, meat, milk? Unacceptable. Those are BASIC staples. -Their produce sucks. I can't tell you how many times I have had to deal with rotten vegetables. ROTTEN!!! Why would you keep rotten food in the bins? Terrible. -WARNING! EXPIRED FOOD!!! Yep, all the time. Take special consideration to the yogurt, dairy, lunch meat etc. Read all your expiration dates. This is a serious issue and should be addressed. This could actually make people sick. - Finally, the deli section sucks. The deli counter people are friendly, but their salads are old and look gross. Their "olive bar" is rarely fully stocked. Again with the expired food, I've found lots of expired cheeses there. Also, if you plan on ordering a sandwich, give yourself a good 30 minutes. It takes them forever to make one for you. Unfortunately most of us are stuck with this place since the only other option is Raley's which is way over-priced. Hopefully someday things will change. read more

This store thrives on being a low volume store. they accomplish this by having poorly stocked shelves, often milk bins are empty of many products. They also excel at keeping the lines long. The cashiers are off doing other things, but not working checkout. Day or night, it is like this. The lines sometimes have 15 people or more in each of the 1 or 2 lines open. I have walked out of this store so many times. I usually drive past this store and go to Raleys. The employees are generally very nice, but they look tired. Management and corporate must be awful. It is a store of last resort for me. read more

My initial experience of the store was that it was okay, but after a few more visits I would downgrade my rating to a 2 stars. On a recent trip, I bought a number of items that I later realized were after the expiration date. I tend to not pay attention to these things, but when a family member was visiting she noticed a bunch of items in our refrigerator that were out of date and threw them away. When I asked why, she said that they were expired. They were all items (about 4) that were purchased at Safeway within 2 weeks prior to that. She noted that the items had expired over a month before, and one 6 months before. I take some responsibility for this, as it is good to check the expiration dates before purchasing items. However, the store also should be responsible for making sure that these items are removed. If it was one item, I wouldn't worry much as I am sure this happens at all stores from time to time. However, it was about 4 items. I also should add that I did not attempt to return the items (they had been thrown away), so the store might of responded responsibly had I done so. Still, it is something that should not have occurred to begin with. read more

Never enough check stands open. Very frustrating. Going to raleys even though it's further.

The Benicia Safeway is probably the worst Safeway I have ever shopped at. The staff looks dirty and unkempt. The uniforms are dirty and ill fitting. I had the dubious displeasure of seeing the manager last week, and I was not surprised that the staff looks like shit. The guy had greasy hair, stains on his shirt, and his pants were hanging halfway to the floor. They also have this knack of stocking the shelves at 9 in the morning so that the shoppers are made to feel they are negotiating an obstacle course. The deli staff is rude and never has fresh fried chicken on hand. usually the deli is staffed by one person who stands at the front of the counter but won't help anyone because she is doing who knows what up there. It takes 15 - 20 minutes to go through the check stand, because only one cashier is available. Usually this person looks half asleep, and has a" I could really give a fuck attitude." Benicia Safeway, go to the Lahaina Safeway on Maui, and take notes on how not to be a bunch of frigging losers. That Safeway sees more shoppers in a month than the Benicia Safeway sees all year. The place runs like a well oiled machine. read more

My complaint it with the floral department of this store. Easter Sunday my husband bought an arrangement in a very plain looking vase, nice assortment of flowers, but priced WAY too high for a grocery store floral department! The flowers were stuffed in the vase so tightly that not all of the stems were receiving water so the flowers were droopy the next day...and now...2 days later they are all almost dead. The stems of the flowers need oxygen to survive and the arrangements I see at Safeway are not put together correctly in order for this too happen. They need to either use a larger vase or fewer flowers. In any case, they need to charge a more reasonable price for inferior flowers. If I wanted to pay $75 for an arrangement I would go to the florist where I know I would get premium flowers. The whole purpose of shopping at the supermarket for flowers is NOT to pay florist prices. Safeway must not get that! The arrangement I received didn't even have a nice vase. It will most likely go in the box for a Goodwill donation. I would have complained, but after visiting the store today to check out the rest of their arrangements, I noticed all of the "customs" are way over priced so this must be the way they do business. I decided to keep the bouquet, take out the surviving flowers and make a small bouquet. Besides, my husband did pay the over priced amount without question, but I think he did so because he was a little embarrassed that he misread the price tag. I won't buy flowers at Safeway again. Raley's here in town has much nicer "grocery store" flowers! read more

Prices are reasonable if you have a Safeway club card. If not, you're being ripped off. Takes too long to check out. Needs a self checkout line or more cashiers. Do they not trust Benicians? Also needs more lighting and wider aisles. If you need to talk to customer service you'll have a very long wait. read more

while it doesn't have as much "stuff" as the only other supermarket in town (Raley's), it does have cheaper prices and a decent selection which has recently been improved by a renovated deli and addition of a Starbucks (Hey, Benicia now has three Starbuck's, we're really coming up in the World!)...friendly service and good selection at better prices than Raley's make this the better of the two supermarkets...but why oh why can't we get a Trader Joe's here in town? read more

Oh my gosh.... There is always a line! I think it must be a corporate thing because when I lived in San Diego, Von's (the company's sister store)always had s line too. In addition- something about the entrance near the produce section smells terrible every time I walk in. Although it's a little pricier, I would recommend Raleys instead! read more

I don't like coming here. At all. This store is extremely small. The aisles are cluttered. The staff here is unfriendly. There lines are always crowded and there is rarely more than 2 check out counters up. The beer selection is pathetic. There often a lot of items out of stock. The store is dirty. The parking lot is a mess. This store is a bad representation of Safeway. Side note, I came in one day and was looking through the lot of discounted items. There was a shelf with a decent amount of items on it, and next to it was a grocery cart with a TON of items in it. I started rambling through the cart of items when one of the store employee's came up to me and said 'That's my stuff bruh'. I thought he was joking. But he went back to the shelf of discounted items and started throwing even more stuff into his cart and walked off with it. That just rubbed me the wrong way. I'll gladly go to the newly remodeled, highly personable, Raley's in town then deal with this. read more
