I live close to this Safeway. This is my main grocery store. It has been almost always pleasant. The pharmacy is by far 5 stars. They are always on point and helpful. They have been enormously helpful. Safeway should be so proud of their pharmacists. They are amazing. The food is generally great. I can find what I need, when I need it. The sales are fantastic! I shop the sales whenever I can. The store is clean and relaxing. The music is right up my alley. All in all, a good grocery store to frequent. read more

It's okay. In my opinion it looks a bit outdated. Then again other stores close by are as well. It certainly is a large grocery option. The employees who work here are both kind and helpful. Also checkout is usually quite efficient. The prices are the problem. Occasionally they'll have a outstanding sale on yogurts or beer. Yet for the most part overpriced compared with competitors. They do have a nice seafood section here, with plenty of choices. If you're in the area this works. My recommendation is to thoroughly price check, and just get a few items. read more

I have been shopping at the Giant location down the street for over 30 years and have always been pleased with the quality of fresh foods (vegetables, seafood, and meat), the friendly/helpful employees, and prices in general. Knowing on what days certain items are delivered helps to get the best choice. I was surprised to read reviews about spoiled fresh foods. I would shop at Safeway for a few items occasionally, more out of convenience. However, although inflation is an issue everywhere, I was very surprised at my recent findings. Some years ago, I would compare prices at Giant, Safeway, Target, and Walmart for grocery items. Most times, canned and some dry goods were, and still are, lower at Walmart. Safeway might have a few grocery items at lower prices, but not enough to make it worth shopping there. Also, before the Safeway store's renovation many years ago, you couldn't count on the quality of fresh vegetables, seafood, and meats. After the store's renovation, the quality improved significantly at Safeway. I have always found Safeway employees to be friendly and helpful. But, overall, Giant was the better option for lower prices. Recently, after paying $9.89 for a dozen jumbo Giant-brand eggs I checked yesterday, the price has increased to $10.79. A dozen jumbo Safeway-brand eggs are only $6.59. I compared prices from my recent Giant shopping trip; my total cost would have been significantly less at Safeway. From now on I will compare prices at both after preparing my shopping list, but looks like I may be switching from Giant to Safeway. Both stores are the same distance from my house. read more

Michael Wilson is an employee there and I just gotta say, he's stellar. I hope this gets back to him somehow. He made shopping so easy and explained to me where stuff was and went beyond the norm. On another occasion I arrived minutes before closing and he explained that they had to close the doors a few minutes early. This is the closest grocery store to me. Have been going there for years. It's been awhile since ordering a cake but they were good in the past. Went today to order a cake for my son's birthday. They have a huge book of cake designs and advertise cakes for any occasion and all the sizes. Was told I can't order a cake because they don't have a cake decorator at the moment and don't know when one will be there. Then why have the book available and advertise you do cakes if you can't actually do them? You even have already decorated ones in the case. Countless bad experiences, but one thing that's annoying is who they choose to stand at self checkout. If you're incapable of helping or listening to a problem maybe you shouldn't be in an area where people have multipul issues. Item wasn't ringing up the right price that was on shelf and even after asking the employee 2 times to help fix he shrugged it off and said "sometimes it's slow and takes a few minutes to load the right price"........what? I just looked back and forth between my husband and him confused and both times he told me to just scan it again. Like no buddy the price needs to be adjusted to the sale price on the shelf. Clearly he didn't want to confirm price check and adjust so decided to waste our time and eventually after standing there for 5-7 minutes looking like fools we just got our other grocery and left. I understand not everything catches in the system if there's a sale but that's why you have employees to fix those missed mistakes. Pharmacy is very well stocked and pharmacists are helpful. Cashier (Yaa) is very efficient and personable. And the Starbucks servers Ganett, Mercedes and others are also great. Overall, the store is well stocked and the staff is great. read more

The store gets three stars but the customer service gets two in my opinion. This store is pretty big and almost always has what I'm looking for. I'm not a fan of asking questions to employees on where to find things but I am a fan of buying lotto tickets or asking for rain checks. The employees I have encountered seem nice and overwhelmed but the customer service seems to lack employees. I have gone to ask for rain checks or lottery tickets and it takes forever for someone to help you. I really hope they hire more people because on weekends lines can be long in both self checkout and regular check out. If you are ever in a rush and need a quick trip, I suggest late evening or early morning shopping. read more

I am very happy with this Safeway. The staff is friendly, the shelving and inventory is really good, AND there's a Starbucks and seating area in there. I sometimes get a cup of coffee, and sit while I make my shopping list. There is an Asian lady who is a cashier and has been there for a long time - she's my favorite employee- letting me know when things are on sale and what the deals are. read more

Felt compelled to post a review to warn other people about this Safeway. Stopped by to get some snacks after some beers at the nearby Glory Days and we were immediately greeted by a strong smell of something akin to dog poop mixed with rotten produce. What could possibly be worse than a grocery store that smells like rot? If you guessed "cockroaches", you'd be right! We managed to snap a picture of one running around near the Starbucks. Needless to say, we hustled out of the store without buying a thing. I don't say this lightly. I would STRONGLY suggest staying away from this location until they get their act together and clean things up. This is the nearest grocery store and the usual grocery store for staples. I prefer other stores for produce and fresh meat. They don't have a large selection of organic products; I usually shop elsewhere for those items. The store is clean, the service is reasonable, and has a reasonably large selection. They have some self-service check out stations that are useful when I stop in for just a few items. They do have a Starbucks inside and branch of Suntrust with an ATM. I often make use of the ATM. read more

I am not sure why this location gets such a low rating, but I actually drive a few miles out of my way to shop at this store. I will start by saying that there are two Safeway locations in Burke: one is small and chaotic and the other is kind of dirty and doesn't leave a great impression. This location has had several remodels in my almost 30 years in Burke. The latest update changes the colors to a soothing and relaxing color palate with soft lighting . They don't have the bright fluorescent lighting that most other stores have. This location also has a Starbucks inside that that's crazy good baristas who are mega-times better than either of the two freestanding locations in Burke! The cafe area has a long community table to work or socialize. They also have WiFi ! There is outdoor seating as well for both the coffee customers and for those who want to grab a quick lunch from their deli. Here is where I become somewhat obsessed with a grocery store... the store has to be fleas from the moment I enter the door... anything amiss or dirty and I walk right out. I like the specials to be clearly displayed when I enter and they always have this done. They also score points for actually listening and learning in a marketing class! This is evidenced by the way the florist and produce are situated inside one entrance and the ready to go meals, soups, rotisserie chickens, and a big deli is located just inside the other entrance. Either way you do in you smell the freshness ! Speaking of freshness reminds me why I no longer shop at Giant... too much food wasted from not being super fresh when purchased. This is a really large location and I would guess that there are probably about 40k skus. Very rare is the time that they don't have something I needed to get. They are happy to order it for you if you ask at customer service. The produce is pretty good quality and is average price. They have a small organic section and carry mostly American produce. The meat department is well stocked and often times the mess clerk can repackage your items (like you need 4 steaks and they only came in a 3 pack. They will take one out of another package and rewrap it. I know most of you are saying well duh... most places do that but they do not so it any longer. The bakery has fresh breads, bagels, cakes, cupcakes , cookies, danishes and tons of their yum things. They will gladly slice a loaf if you request it. Since we don't really have any where food to go for bagels we buy ours here. Come close to 7am when they are just getting out. For the best check out experience get someone who is older. A lot of Burke naiives don't care for this Safeway. Having shopped here for a few years, I've noticed a few things that turn customers off. TURN OFFS 1. Infant seats on shopping carts ARE NEVER ACCESSIBLE. Safeway does have shopping carts with a seat for your baby, but the carts are ALWAYS in the back behind 30 other carts. Also, your car seat won't fit in their shopping cart. Unless, you are wearing your baby, grocery shopping with an infant is impossible. 2. Employee hygiene. There is a particular employee who works there and has hygiene issues. The employee's stench is so strong that is can be smelled 2 registers away. It is beyond me why management has never addressed this issue. The person's stench always makes me feel ill and I go out of my way to not be at the employee's register. Also, there is no way in hell that I want him touching my items for purchase. 3. Limited staff. This Safeway always seems to be short handed. It is a low traffic Safeway but you will always have a line at the register. 4. Limited produce. This location often appears to be out of items or their produce isn't the freshest. WHY I SHOP HERE 1. It is across the street. 2. It's usually empty. I enjoy an empty grocery store. 3. I don't need help. I come, I shop, if I don't find what I need there are 3 other grocery stores within a mile. read more

My family is frequent shoppers at our Safeway. Friendly staff, available pharmacy, fresh reasonably priced produce and a florist who competes with Trader Joe's and whole foods on freshness and availability. The staff is friendly and management has always been immediately responsive the few times we have had issues/concerns. read more

As of late 2018, this Safeway made the smart choice and added the self check out stations. There are still not enough people working at this location to account for the check our lines for items that are harder to purchase or cannot purchase at self check out (alcohol, gift cards). I go there if I absolutely have to. Otherwise I go to the Safeway by the Kohl's off of Burke Centre Parkway. There are lots of high school kids who work there so there are always speedy checkouts. read more

I came in here today because its my day off and we needed to re-stock the refrigerator. The first thing I noticed when walking in was the produce section. It is quite robust, and I could see right away that the fruits were very fresh. One thing that I could not find was a salad bar which would have been a nice thing for lunch. I settled on prepared salad greens and some low fat dressing. The meat and seafood sections were equally abundant. I walked passed the pharmacy which features a clinic, and it seemed nice too! They had some nice deals on some of the other prepared food also so I picked up an order if 6 chicken breasts for later in tonight. Since we came in right around noon, there were only a handful of customers, so the place was fairly quiet. After about 40 minutes we were able to fill-in the cart half way which should hold us until next weekend. The store was clean and the few employees that I did see seemed professional also. read more

I was actually scared to go here as it only had two stars. I needed milk so my daughter and I went. This place was spotlessly clean. The isles were large (even in produce) so getting around people was easy. The had a ton of fresh cut fruits and vegetables as well as guacamole made in house! I never thought I would write a review for a grocery store, but this safeway is so consistently terrible that I have to let others know. Over the past year I have had consistently bad experiences every time I visit this grocery store. Their staff are unfriendly and unhelpful- specifically their cashiers desperately need better training. Every time I have gone to the cashier with a vegetable that is not in the norm (Serrano pepper, Poblano pepper, etc.) they have no idea what the code is or how to find it and have to call over another employee. This is not only frustrating but slows down the entire checkout line. Additionally, their sale prices consistently do not come off at checkout- I have had to go to customer service several times after checking my receipt to get a refund for something that didn't come off. Their self checkout is also a disaster- the machines are slow and the weights need to be calibrated. One time the man who supervises the self checkout lanes actually yelled at me for bringing a full cart to checkout, saying that I should've gone to a cashier line (there is no item limit for self checkout). Another time, the machine I was using froze after an employee tried to fix the price on an item (yet again their sales not ringing as advertised) and at the instruction of the employee, I had to check out my entire order again MYSELF at another station. Finally, they have had a plastic covering (looks like Glad press n seal) over their credit card keypads since the start of COVID- not only does this make no sense, as they do not change it between customers, but is actually serving the opposite purpose of harboring bacteria since it does not seem like they clean the ripped and frayed plastic at any point. Will sadly need to find another grocery store further from my house! read more

What is going on with this Safeway? Usually when I walk into Safeway, especially one in the 'burbs, it's bright, clean, organized and well stocked. This particular location, however, feels dark and depressing. The produce look terrible - herbs are brown in their packages, hardly anything looks fresh - most of the flowers are in a sorry state, and sometimes I can't find items that most grocery stores have. Luckily, their bakery and deli sections are good and the cashiers are friendly, but that's about it. With all the other grocery options in the area (with another Safeway just down the road, too), I avoid this store if I can. read more

This store declined over the years. No need to elaborate on what others have said about the long checkout times and removed self-checkout stations (complete idiotic move). I saw a manager paging employees to come open another register when lines started getting long. Instead of opening one himself and helping out, he just kept staring at the waiting customers. It's a shame because the Starbucks, Pharmacy, and SunTrust are functional. I bet that within a year or two, this store will be shut down and replaced by an Asian grocery market. I do most shopping at the one next to Spartans. It is brighter, cleaner, appropriately staffed, meat is both fresher and cheaper.
