One of the worst place to do shopping. They customer service is like a third world country. Basically, you are sitting there with no help at all. Even they see you and know that you need assistance, they will ignored you. If you ask them for help, they always pretend like they are busy and have no time. If you need a price checked (like from the 50% off area) and you tell the cashier it is 75% off - they will speak in Spanish to each other, no translation and tell you it's only 50% off. You will have to PROVE it yourself because the cashier's won't. Don't bother shopping here - I recommend the Safeway in Berkeley or Tara Hills. This place might be convenient but the security guard at the door says different. Very upset because they do not believe the customer and do not translate their decision nor do you know WHAT THE HELL they are talking about. It is poor, prejudice customer service. I HATE that people come over to the United States and try to treat Black citizens like shit. I complained via email to HQ in Pleasanton, I hope to get a prompt reply or I will write a letter. I stopped by the store this morning just before 5am when they opened, the only problem is they didn't open at 5am like they are supposed too. I stood outside with other waiting customers for over 20 minutes waiting for the doors to finally open. A employee coming to work came and knocked on the door and when someone came to let her in I asked the employee why they weren't open yet even though it was well after the time the store should have been opened and she got a attitude with me for asking and was very rude. They finally opened the doors at 5:23am and when I walked in I saw a table full of employees by the Starbucks inside having coffee and conversations. This whole thing was very unfortunate and unacceptable and I recorded most of it on video. Can someone help me get this video to someone in charge of that store. read more

I was skeptical about coming to this store because of the bad reviews. But this store was the only Safeway near the el Cerrito Bart station, so I had no choice. I came here for something to eat for lunch because I had a gift card. I walked in and seen one security card at the door and I expected him to say something about my backpack I was wearing because of the reviews but he didn't give me a hard time. I wanted a sandwich so I walked to the sandwich making station but a lady said they were closed, so I had to pick a pre made sandwich. I then went to get some chips, I couldn't find any small bags of chips so I asked this lady putting boxes away but she said she didn't work here. Which pissed me off just a little because she was obviously lying. But I eventually found the chips I wanted. I headed to check out but none of the lines were open, just the self checkout, which I had no problem with. Ambiance wise: The self checkout is kind of hidden because there are rows of snacks and drinks surrounding the area. Overall It's not that bad, it's just the employees come off as having an attitude like they don't want to be there. read more

I have been to Safeway many times when it was a busy time of day or evening and they had maybe 2 cashiers. It is such an expensive store for many items. And then for all the money they charge you your frozen products start to melt because the line at the cashier is so long. The deli almost always has only one employee working there and there are many customers waiting for a very long time. Some just give up and leave. They charge ridiculously high prices at their deli and give horrible customer service. It is so frustrating. I don't have anywhere else to shop that has a deli nearby me. I have complained to the managers many many times! They say things like we haven't been able to hire enough employees yet. But they sure do charge high prices and take your money! There are a few items which I can only get at Safeway which I really like. They have Signature brand products which is their Safeway brand. They have frozen meals that are Signature brand for only $2.25. I live on a disability income and I appreciate that so much. Also they have a brand of toilet paper called "Softly" which comes in "mega" rolls. It is the best toilet paper I have ever used! They do seem to have a good bakery department. I buy these cakes called "pudding rings" which are delicious and for $5 a good deal. They also have huge containers of baby spinach "Organics" brand which are only $5. I really appreciate that because I eat spinach salads every day. It is worth reading their weekly flier because sometimes they have good deals. Every Friday they have "$5 Fridays" and offer good deals. They just need to staff their store appropriately for the amount of customers shopping there. They have no competition in that neighborhood for a similar store so maybe that is why they aren't motivated to improve their customer service and be so cheap on having a sufficient amount of employees. read more

Hooray! A new Safeway! Not that I'm some rabid fanatic of the Safeway chain of grocery stores, but a shiny new supermarket in town is a good thing. More grocery options, more better. Since this Safeway is basically brand-spankin' new, it's really nice, clean & organized throughout. It's also really big with a vast & wide selection of everything you'd expect in a supermarket + departments galore. The parking lot seems reasonably large enough for a store of this size. My only knock against this Safeway is the same as I have against any major chain grocer. Too much of their selection is mainstream name brands. 1 item I wanted to get was chips (potato or tortilla) & there weren't many choices available that were not Frito-Lay. As much as I love grocery stores that have eclectic or unusual goods, this Safeway is still a very welcome shopping resource. It's big, clean & has a bunch of stuff, so hooray for the new Safeway! read more

I always spend times read ingredients, compared nutritions...really hard for me to pick a loaf of bread. just share few reasons: they either has 1higher sodiums, 2 nuts I can't eat, 3 raisins,4 flaxseed, 5 high fructose ,6 soy lecithin, 7corn, 8 artificial colors, 9, wrapped by inner plastic wrapping( which I consider during the heat sealing, plastic could released toxic chemicals leached in to bread? so,I stop eat the 1st & last pieces but now, I don't even buy, FYI, some organic bread didn't have that inner plastic wrappings, not sure why? now, talk about Safeway, I love this stores, worker all friendly, food are fresh, store are nice clean & neat, especially love the LOCAL SECTIONS, came here almost everyday. gave Ken & everyone a two thumbs up. read more

Hate to be this guy but if it helps someone else out then it's worth it. Do not use the delivery service from this location. Several times I've had the unfortunate experience of having them drop off my items well before the window I scheduled, and with ZERO notifications that it was on its way, or that it had been delivered off after the fact. Ok this post is very long but worth the read to tell you about what incredible customer service I got from 4 employees of Safeway delivery!!! Which I HUGELY suggest to you for any of your grocery needs. So here goes and this is what I emailed them. I can't thank you enough for everything everyone of your people did for me this time!!! Everybody went WAY out of their way to make sure my delivery went down exactly as I requested along with all my idiosyncrasies and requests. Let me explain. 1. I pretty much only drink Canada Dry Ginger Ale and water so when I order the Ginger Ale I order a bunch at a time. This time I ordered 30 of them. I called late one night at 10:30 pm. I spoke with the replenishment manager (sorry I'm bad with getting names) who was a female in the El Cerrito, Ca location. She took time out of what I could imagine is a VERY hectic job to go out to the isles and in back to check and count how many there were. When she saw you were out of them she told me she was going to place a special order for me and they would be there in 2 days and just as she said, in 2 days they were there. Amazing as so many people say they are going to do special requests at many businesses and drop the ball and forget. 5 stars for that! 2. When the order picker picked all my items they didn't know she had placed them in a special place in the back for me so they did not know to add them to my order. When the day came I called and asked the person in dot com to check for me and she went in back to look for me, found them and called me back to report that she did find them and had to take them to the cash out area and have someone run them thru a register since my order had already been paid for. She did and I got what I requested. 5 stars for that! 3.Then I forgot to ask about my request to have one of my items Tilamook sharp white cheddar 2lb block, unwrapped and have the deli department slice it for me 1/8th" thick so I can use it for sandwiches. This was the only thing in this whole experience that got missed. So I called back and actually was put on hold as the phone kept ringing in customer service and nobody picked up and the call rerouted 3 times. A minor issue but very understandable. But on a side note I know how extremely important phone customers are to any business. If any call is not gotten to, that customer will probably take their business elsewhere. So a little reminder to all employees to answer the phone at anytime if they hear it ring more than 3 times, run and pick it up and put the guest on hold weather it is their job or not. Anyway back to my call. So I called back and chose to speak with the deli department and this time someone picked up. So I got to speak with a young man and asked him to get ahold of dot com for me again. But he didn't just do that he actually took the time to ask me specifically what I was calling about and not just put it on someone else. He truly wanted to take the time to help me himself if he could. Unfortunately he could not this time but he still took the time to thank me for calling and apologized for me having to wait so long on my last call. This young man was fantastic and truly only had in mind to give me outstanding customer service!!! So he put me on hold and got dot com for me. 5 stars for that! The girl that answered was also super. She went outside to the delivery truck as my order had already been pulled and put on a truck. She found my cheese and saw that it wasn't sliced as I requested & took it back inside to the deli and had them slice it just as I asked and took it back outside and added it back to my order. Then took time to call me back to let me know that it had been done. 5 stars for that! 4. The young man that deliverd my groceries had to lug all those bags (about 20 of them) down a flight of stairs to get the my home and did without question. When he was done I begged him to help me put them in my fridge because I am very handicapped with major back issues right now and would have an extremely hard time trying to stand and get those items put away. Now I know that this may be against your policy which is a lost chance for that special added touch and a missed opportunity for customer service above and beyond that will only create extremely loyal customers!! So PLEASE DON'T REPRIMAND HIM!!! So he took the little time to put all the refrigerated and frozen items in the fridge for me. I told do not worry about the dry goods as they won't spoil and I could take my time in putting them away. So he went out of his way to put them away for me which only really took like 4 or 5 minutes anyway. So I give him 100 stars for his extreme care and concern for people in their daily struggles. Gorgeous Safeway! It's newly revenovated with a giant Starbucks and outdoor patio seating with heat lamps and free wifi. I've been to my share of safeways and this one, tops it. The parking garage is huge, but there's only two entrances and exits which suck since its right by the Bart station, which has a lot of traffic and congestion. The inside is clean and organized. The far left back entire of the Safeway is a dedicated "cafeteria" with all the ready made and hot foods and etc lined up. Everything else is your typical Safeway, but this one is spacious not super crowded. The staff are friendly and helpful. read more

Rang the button thing, spoke to the pharmacy, called the store's customer service line. Heard over the loudspeaker 3 separate calls for a manager/key holder to head to aisle 14. Customer service is definitely not a priority at this Safeway. I strongly recommend avoiding this location at night if you plan on using self-checkout. Pretty much everyone I know has had a bad experience with that grumpy guy with brown hair and glasses who works the self-checkout. I understand working in customer service can be stressful, but it seems as if this man literally tries to ruin everyone's day. I've even seen him yell at an elderly woman who was having trouble using the machines, mind you helping people is his job. This El Cerrito Safeway could have been a decent supermarket if not for bad produce, locked up cabinets, poor service and not enough shopping carts. God help you if you need toothpaste or want to buy a bottle of liquor. I understand they are dealing with a lot of thieves and therefore, shop lifting. But if you're going to lock up the items you sell you should at least have people ready to assist you in a timely manner. Also, unless on sale, prices are bordering on absurd. I've never left a 1 star review in my many years on Yelp but this place deserves it. I've only shopped here once a week for the last 4 weeks. At least two of the following have happened in each visit: - Blatant shoplifting with store employees doing little more than shaking their fist - Instead of actually stopping shoplifting, store uses it as an excuse to prevent paying customers from buying alcohol at self-checkout - Most self-checkout machines broken or only accepting cash resulting in long lines - Staff member had no idea where chilled wine was and said he didn't even think they had it. I soon found it a few steps away. - Horribly long lines for cashier checkout - Lots of food at the deli but absolutely no one to help the many confused customers - Crazy person speeding her shopping cart toward other customers demanding they move out of the way This place is a complete failure. It should be completely restaffed/remanaged or replaced (demolished?). You'd think for all the trouble, they'd at least have good deals, but TJs is cheaper. Sometimes I will probably still have to shop at this Safeway because of time constraints but I'm doing everything I can to plan ahead and come here as little as possible. read more

It's been over five years since I last visited this Safeway. New observations: 1. Staff did not know where the newspaper racks are located in the store, and as it turns out, there were no Saturday papers or early/preview Sunday Chronicles to be had 2. Many of the standard first aid and personal hygiene products are in locked cases 3. On the plus side, faux news, e.g., those venerable sources National Enquirer and the Star, is readily available in the checkout lane racks. read more

Only speaking for the bakery section. I came in 2 days before I needed my order to get a cake. The worker, I didnt catch her name was very helpful. I ordered a decorated cake that I wanted to add toys to so I had a specific idea and explained to her how I wanted it and she knew exactly what I wanted. I also ordered 20 cupcakes in different flavors and colored frosted, she wrote everything done for me. I picked up my order 2 days later and I was so happy how it turned out. It was so cute and I was glad I went there to get my cake. Everyone at party commented how cute and moist the cake was ( got chocolate cake with fresh strawberries) I will continue to make future cake orders there! read more

What can you say about this place other than long lines, employees who either look like they want to cuss you out or ask you to help them escape, over priced food, and I'm sorry but i don't know how people can tolerate their hot food counter. That food is beyond bland- it's blah. I give two stars because it's open late and they keep the shelves stocked. So in a pinch and usually before or on a holiday, I can run in here to grab some last minute items then wait in line for a good hour (if I'm lucky). And don't even think about going to their Starbucks to get a drink and have a seat because they have regulars who grab their seats early and don't leave. Ever! read more

The store is nice looking. It has good parking and convenient to BART. I spent 15 minutes just at the deli. There was a line for fresh cut meats and the guy with a lot of hair in his net was not friendly or accommodating. He didn't greet you nor asked if you wanted help. Someone finally came to service me and three people left the line because it was taking so long-that's how I got to the head of the line. I don't understand what is wrong with the staff here. I like going here because it's always clean but when it comes to customer service they are lacking. You get the cashier who always talks to his/her coworkers without greeting you or acknowledging that your right infront of them listening to everything. The last one (this last Saturday) if your going to talk about how horrible your hours are then go to your manager's office! Also my son's FIRST birthday cake, I had to get it from here only because we came from vacation & didn't have time to pre-order anything anywhere. The cake lady was rude as hell and when I asked her to put his name on the cake, she messed it up, walked away where I can't see her & came back with the same cake already covered. I ASSUMED she fixed it but I got home and the writing was so bad that we couldn't even take a picture for our MEMORY! So thank you rude ass lady! This store is absolutely awful. There are a handful of cashiers that are incompetent, and they slow the entire store down and make it unbearable to shop there. The last time I was in the store was July 2016. I was waiting on line and the cashier got in an animated conversation with the woman she was helping at the time... I guess they were friends, because the cashier abandoned the line and went with her customer to investigate the price of a large bottle of wine. They were giggling as they left (literally). This cashier did not say that a single word to me, or to the person on line in front of me. She just left her line and giggled off to the wine aisle. She was gone for 3 minutes before I asked the cashier on the aisle next to the one I was on to page a manager, which she did. After another few minutes, she paged the manager a second time. I didn't leave the line because (1) I was incredulous and (2) I was curious to see if the cashier would ever come back. The manager arrived at the same time as the cashier, her friend and a bottle of wine in tow. The manager never acknowledged my existence. Neither did the cashier. The helpful cashier on the next aisle looked over at me and started apologizing for what was going on. She looked humiliated, and I honestly felt badly for her: she was the only employee in the store who had made any attempt to help me in any way. Realizing that enough of my time had been wasted, I left my groceries on the belt, and walked directly out the door. read more

I arrive to Safeway between 6 am and 6:30; I have tried various days. Various trips and every trip in December and January, the produce employees had their masks below their noses, touching their faces, and putting produce out. I mentioned it to management every single time. Seems to be better, but customers are not wearing their masks on their nose and no one is asking them to put it on correctly. If you are concerned about your health and can shop elsewhere, please do so. If you can't, please double mask, keep your distance, and bring wipes. I can't believe how far down the shopping experience has fallen. I've been a Safeway customer since the seventies, and have always enjoyed the experience. Now, not so much. The latest issue of Consumers Report ranked Safeway 91st out of 96 stores; five from the bottom! 8 out of 14 categories were rated 'worse'. They have some work to do. This Safeway has the appearance of being above average, slightly more luxurious than your regular ol' Safeway. They have a sushi bar, organic produce section, bulk foods, a Starbucks and a pharmacy. It's pretty comprehensive at first glance. BUT I can never get out of here without standing in a 10-person deep line. All the while, they play a public service announcement while you're shopping that states "If there's more than 3 people in line, we'll open another lane - it's that simple!" But yet, there is no accountability on this promise. It's all talk, no action! Also: - the bulk section is always lacking pens and twist ties. Quality control! - only 1 of the 2 entrances have shopping hand-baskets available. Why not both? On a warm fuzzy note, one day I was short 71 cents and the cashier gave me a dollar of her own money so I could buy toilet paper! Quite touching and awesome. read more

This is a perfectly fine Safeway. It's definitely bigger than you see in Berkeley and San Francisco, which is nice. It's got all the good stuff like a bakery and sandwich shop. The staff are pretty chill. But still, this is a corporate grocery store. Produce is expensive. Super expensive. I'd rather drive the extra miles to Berkeley Bowl. Got a dog? Hide it in your coat.
