I hate to give this Safeway location such a low star review because it has so much potential! Let's start with the location, this one isn't the nicest spot in town. Next to the del Norte Bart station with ihop, dollar tree and easy access to downtown Richmond - so if that doesn't ring ghetto to you then I don't know what is. The store itself is huge and had a huge parking lot to go along with it. The store is nice and rather large for Safeway in Richmond. So you have a nice big looking store and the company would pair it with terrible customer service reps from the cashiers and some of the assistant managers. There is more often than not no one around to help you out if you have a question, especially at the bakery. If the customer service here was quick and much kinder I think then more people would come here. I wouldn't come here unless I really need to. read more

This is one of the grocery places near me. I go here to do my shopping most of the time, but not necessarily by choice. Most of the time I go here it's for a quick run to get something. Parking's not too bad, but I don't mind walking if the parking space is far back. At least for a chain store it's reliable that for all the non-edibles and standard foodstuffs I need (name brands) chances are that it's there. Produce is fresh most of the time. The choices for microwaved food is quite a lot. The bad thing about this particular Safeway is that the store is a reflection of the city and its neighbors. It reeks of ghetto. -I've been asked for money at least five times. -Unwarranted advances from some of the questionable men. -Rude customers and cashiers. The complaints from Yelpers about the store being understaffed are true - whenever I go there's never a short line. At any one visit at the most half of the cashiers are open. read more

I think one star is unfair to the hard-working employees here, but this Safeway deserves one star. We've been living in El Cerrito for almost four years now and our trips to Safeway have decreased significantly. We used to go to the one on the corner of San Pablo and Macdonald, because it was closer, but they consolidated that one and the one by El Cerrito Plaza into this one mega-Safeway. We were excited at first, but that excitement has turned into resentment. First, here are the good things about this Safeway: It's big and clean and has tons of inventory. Here are the bad things about this Safeway: The parking lot was terribly designed. Now, whether that was due to city requirements or not, the fact remains, it's terrible. There are two narrow entrances: one off of San Pablo Ave and one off of Hill St., which is two lanes. The one on Hill St. is directly across from the BART station and is susceptible to BART traffic. If you're trying to enter from the West (where you'd have to make a left into Safeway), you're up against traffic flowing in from San Pablo Ave., and most of it is through-traffic or BART riders, so there's an unnecessary wait. That's not the worst part about the Hill St. entrance. It's actually the exit. Due to the the through-traffic from San Pablo, cars get lined up inside the lot because of that one car needing to make a left turn (towards San Pablo). Trying to exit from the section of the lot that runs parallel to Hill St. is a non-starter. You'll be stuck there forever. What they should have done is make an additional entrance on the corner of San Pablo and Hill that merges into the Safeway lot. In fact, all the entrances should be merging-type entrances/exits to encourage traffic to flow, rather abruptly slow down and turn into the lot. The other thing about the lot is all the spaces are 90 degrees. They should be diagonal, which would help traffic flow much better. Right now, each lane has two-way traffic and you have to make wide turns to get into a space. This lot is so big and never full, so making it more efficient (and safe) is a no-brainer. Here is the worst part about this Safeway: it's huge and has like 20 check-out lanes (including the self-check outs), but there's only about 1/8 or 1/4 of them manned. And it's usually during peak hours that the lanes are unmanned. This is unacceptable. For a store that's so new and big, why are there never enough cashiers? The lines should never queue into the food aisles! You'd think creating a big store for high-volume shoppers would actually put people behind the cashiers, right? Because of these reasons, we are never going back to this Safeway. We actually wish the smaller, dirtier Safeway on the corner of San Pablo and Macdonald was still around (now a Planet Fitness). Parking lot is better designed and the check-out time was much faster. It's a shame because there are some good, hard-working employees there (there are some rude ones, too). read more

This location exists to remind you that Safeway has a delivery service and that Amazon Prime Now will get your groceries and miscellany to your doorstep in under 2 hours. If you feel like you've got time to kill, this spot is ideal. There must be times of day when lines are short, maybe mid-morning Monday through Thursday. You know how some phone systems will advise you to call at certain times? This manager might as well post a sign at the door saying "I won't revise my staffing plan to serve your ideas of convenience. I am trying to earn the largest bonus possible. I suggest you shop Monday through Thursday 10am - 12noon or before 8am (or what his data shows as slow times) or better yet shop online." Then I could write beneath it - Or just use Amazon Prime Now. That said, the staff at the fresh fish counter will answer your questions and find what you're looking for. They get 5 stars. The cashiers have almost all been terrific. Customer Service counter almost never has any staff or signage indicating when they will return. Wine and beer selections what we expect in the Bay Area - Good - and eye-poppingly good if you're visiting from Utah. Pick up your Bear Republic and Lagunitas, a coupla pounds of shrimp, just don't try to do it if you're in a hurry. read more

There is a very weird paradoxical nature to this Safeway. It's a prime location, near BART, yet getting -- ATTENTION BAKERY DEPARTMENT! TWO, ZERO, ONE! -- suicidal leap into traffic. It's quite fancy on the inside, with lovely produce displays and perfectly stacked fruit. Maybe it's -- ATTENTION BAKERY DEPARTMENT! TWO, ZERO, ONE! --wood accents all over, making it feel like a Nordstroms or something. People have been complaining about the employees, and again,-- ATTENTION BAKERY DEPARTMENT! TWO, ZERO, ONE! --social level, they always treat me warmly and kindly. On a professional level, they really need some work. For example, here is a typical deli trip: Stand in line for 15 minutes-- behind ONE other person. Me: "Hi! I'd like a half pound of roast turkey!". -- ATTENTION BAKERY DEPARTMENT! TWO, ZERO, ONE! -- Them: "Ok". [looks sideways] [looks back] Them: "What did you want? Me: "Half pound of roast turkey" Them: "Ok, roast turkey" Them: "how much did you want?" I've moved here about a year ago and I have to say by far this is one of the worst Safeway I have ever been too in my life... it's weird because this is the most cleanest and organized Safeway I have ever been to but every time I go here no matter what time of the day it is no matter what day of the week it is the lines are always super super long they have 13 checkout lines but only utilize two at most!!!!!!!!! Went into this Safeway for the first time the other day, and was followed by security in every section I went in. I've just moved into the area 2 months ago and this is the closest safeway to my house; I've heard stories on how this is not a good Safeway to shop in, and now I've experienced it for myself. I felt so uncomfortable and targeted. Maybe this was a case of mistaken identity as I've heard a lot goes on around this Safeway but nonetheles, the employees should be more pleasant and welcoming to anyone who shops there. I went in at 8:45 am yesterday to pick up a few snacks before a meeting at 9:00 am. The self-checkout machines were shut down and there was only one open register, where 12 (12!!!) people already stood in line. After getting my items, I asked an employee if it were possible to open another register or self-checkout. Of course it wasn't. I pointed out that it was 9:00 am, people were getting on with their day and there were certainly enough customers in line to warrant at least one more register. Not according to Safeway, so I set down my items and left. This is my 2nd review of this store and my 3rd bad experience. I went back because it's my neighborhood supermarket: it's close and convenient and I want to like it. But so far every shopping trip there has included some bad experience and I've given on and will go back to the Albany store on Solano. NOTE to SAFEWAY MANAGEMENT: This store is very poorly run. I agree with the previous reviews about this newest Safeway in El Cerrito, replacing the older El Cerrito and Richmond locations in regard to its size, attractiveness and availability of a huge variety of goods and services. BUT its size is also a drawback. Starting with the parking lot: the convenience of the smaller Safeways was that there was parking, particularly "Handicapped" parking spaces right at the door. This old Target lot has the parking removed at a distance from the entrance and the disabled spots are few and spread out across the entire parking lot. I am not in a wheelchair, but have severe pain associated with mobility. Not being able to find a disabled spot to park makes a shopping trip far more difficult. And because this Safeway replaces two previous locations, the lot has been jammed each time I have shopped. The store is attractive, the entry right into the floral department is refreshing and welcoming. But the organization of items throughout the store needs some serious refinement. During my first visit there today I came across several groups of people standing together discussing how hard it is to find things despite the clear signs. For example, the bread department is strangely spread out in a circular area and one has to wander to find items that used to be organized together in one large "wall" of bread, rolls, buns, etc. I'm sure the management will refine the organization and make the store more customer-friendly in regard to locating items, but for now, the sheer size is discouraging. Some social anthropologist once wrote that grocery stores change up their displays to appeal to the "hunter/gatherer" in people, that we are "excited" by the hunt. Uh, no thanks. When I shop, I want to go in, find what I want, get it and get out. This is grocery shopping, for crying out loud, not a bloody safari. I like the self-checkout, the Starbucks, the custom meat and seafood service and the expanded deli. The produce department is beautiful and appealing to the eye but much of the fruit lacks the aroma of beautifully ripened, non-hybridized produce. I hope that familiarity with the layout, improvements on same by the management and refinement of organization will improve the shopping experience at this location. read more

The customer service at this location is AWFUL. I have heard multiple employees multiple times talk to each other and customers about how much they hate their job. 2 workers in the deli argued over making a sandwich for me, as they both didn't want to, so I left . At self check out on one occasion I asked for help and was told to do it myself. I shop at this location weekly because the selection is great, but why are these employees so unhappy? No smiles, they hardly ever interact with customers, throw groceries carelessly, and just seem downright miserable. Horrible store. The cashier was operating in slow motion and then our coupons were not applied correctly so we had to go to the customer service counter to wait again to get that resolved. Let me kick off this review by saying that I feel sorry for this Safeway's employees. Because I know it's not their fault they are understaffed...BUT all in all, this Safeway sucks. I think it's beautiful, decently stocked && is so big it can be a bit overwhelming at times (especially if you're going in for one small thing) but the layout && stock doesn't take from the lack of love I feel upon entering this establishment. Double check every expiration date, especially when buying from the deli/bakery. Just don't do the bakery at all really. All the balloons on the cakes look sad && all the cakes look old. When purchasing a sandwich, be prepared to wait at least 15 minutes...&& when you get to the counter you'll have to explain in full detail exactly how you want your sandwich--- and they still won't get it right. How is sandwich making your job...but you make nasty sandwiches? I've watched them literally slap some shit together in front of my face with an attitude because they're short staffed && tired. Sometimes they don't have the things that all delis have....how do you run out of stock in the grocery store? Beware. You're better off at subway. The lines are crazy long. I've waited in line for an hour before. They have several check out stands but only two (3 if you're lucky) are open at all times. Some employees are ridiculously slow && sad looking. I know they're short staffed so I try to keep a positive attitude when I'm in line. Some are cool, most are rude && some of them look like they'll burst into tears at any moment. (No exaggeration) If you need alcohol that's locked up they can never find the employee that has the key. All in all..I go to this Safeway all the time because it's 5 minutes away from my house BUT I always dread it. I try my hardest to get in && out. After 4 years, I've upgraded my review to 2 stars. Why? Because they've gotten more fresh and organic foods. But the customer service remains as abysmal as ever. And forget about buying alcohol here. They still won't come open up the locked liquor cabinet in a timely way. Yesterday, I bought some sliced jicara root. I got it home and discovered it was old and slimy, so I returned it. The woman at the returns desk, Anna, was slow-moving, sullen and rude, as if I was imposing on her by returning rancid food. She needs to take a quick refresher course on basic manners: "Thank you," "I'm sorry," all that kind of stuff your mother taught you. 2015 REVIEW: It's two years later, and I am downgrading my review (from three stars to one star). I've lived in this area for two years and have gone to this Safeway and I've stopped due to how slow it takes to check out. They never have enough Checkers abs their staff is extremely rude. The reason I am making this review is because of their public restrooms for customers that have a code to get in looks like this. It's always been gross and never have seen it actually cleaned but I walked right out. It's so fucking disgusting! I use to work at a grocery store and this comes down to staffing and management. The Asian American lady at the deli was incredibly slow and rude. She didn't even know what her specialty sandwiches were. We asked for one of each and she just said "no". We had to list every ingredient out even after we told her what kind of sandwiches we wanted. The African American lady was basically ignoring that we were there and refused to help the other one. Maybe you should teach your employees to study their own menu so they know what they are making!! Also she hardly spoke English!!! Okay so I'll admit I come here on a regular basis to mooch the free Wi-Fi and Yelp my little heart away but due to the cool free service I have become a regular customer even though Safeway can sometimes tend to be on the expensive end of grocery prices. It's a new store so it's clean and shiny. My only complaint so far is that the aisles don't make sense to me. Instead of them being in straight rows they built them off center from each other so you can't look all the waaaay down an aisle to see what's there. I just think it's a weird design but maybe someone thought they were being "creative". Who knows.... Safeways average about the same, but whatever is up this one's butt I don't know. They close one entrance hours before the store locks up and have basically 1 cashier 7:30 or 8-on. REALLY irritating to be waiting almost 20 minutes to pay especially if you're only getting a few items and you have no other time to shop and are forced to wait behind someone with a Costco amount of groceries. This Safeway is huge -- too huge. The layout doesn't make a lot of sense and the staff doesn't know much about what they stock, so you can waste a ton of time wandering around. The first time I went in there, I was looking for hummus, and it was in a fridge on the opposite end of the store from the produce department, over by the booze. [Taking the bit about bad walking access from BART out -- now that they've finished working on the BART improvements on that section of track, the little gate and path are now open again.] The employees were really excited and friendly when the store first opened, and the few that you see around now have had the joy beaten out of them. This is the store that the East Bay has been waiting for. A year in construction and the old Target building is finally gone. The wait was well worth it as the East Bay has a new Safeway mecca. The previous Safeway's were either small or lacking in one way or another. Nevertheless, we no longer have this problem. The new store opened August 11, and parking was nonexistent, which is typical for any grand opening. The exterior is a carbon copy of the design that was posted at the construction site for the past year. The design came out much better than I imagined, with a heavy emphasis in a contemporary and modern exterior that just looks great. I made my way inside and the floral department is front and center. The department is large and spacious with tons to select from, as well as balloons for that special occasion. I browsed for a minute before being offered some assistance. The selection of product is exciting, especially as the Richmond store barely had a department and almost had no balloons to choose from either. I continued to make my way around and the produce section was impressively large. There were swarms of employees stocking and Safeway suits greeting and meeting their customer base. The produce was in pristine presentation and looked perfect (for now). The department had just about everything and anything one might need for a night of home cooked dinner. The meat and seafood department is close by and the glass displays were full of fresh cuts and fresh seafood. Plenty of protein was stacked up and they even had shish kabobs ready for grill and ready to go in fifteen minutes. A nicely designed Pharmacy that resembles a doctor's office was up next. The pharmacy even has a waiting area that's closed off from grocery shoppers to allow privacy. However, a window is located on the outside for customers looking to drop off their prescriptions. The department is open all-around and allows customers to ask any available staff member any questions they might have. I made my way to the bakery department and what's this..a wood fired brick oven?! Are they making pizza's back there?! Obviously, they weren't making pizzas, but fresh sourdough bread was coming out and everyone was taking notice as the bread filled the department with its fresh aroma. Everyone was grabbing fresh pastries and desserts and they even had tiramisu on sale for $5. This will undoubtedly be one of the most popular departments in the store, along with the wine isle. It's no Safeway without $5 DOLLAR FRIDAY!! I finally reached the hot food area and it's big! The department has tons of hot food ready, along with all of their classics, such as their wings, chicken tenders, potato wedges, etc. I spotted an Asian section as well, but I didn't get to check it out as there were too many people surrounding it. However, I did reach my ultimate destination, the Signature Café. I strongly believe this is one of Safeway's best sections, as they make great sandwiches at a great price. I ordered a Tuscan Chicken on pesto split crust bread. The sandwich is made of grilled chicken breast, marinated mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, onions, and aioli dressing. The sandwich artist was a little lacking in the making of my sandwich, but I'll give her a break as it was her second day. As I made my way to pay, they have a sushi section with a sushi chef making fresh rolls. There were quite a few customers chatting with the chef and purchasing his rolls, which guarantees this to be a popular spot. The store even has an outdoor patio for customers to enjoy their lunch with FREE WIFI and even outdoor heaters for those windy nights. The whole experience is amazing, especially since the East Bay doesn't get such luxuries, due to our reputation. I'm sure lots and lots of people will be enjoying the patio, as it's really a nice place to enjoy your lunch rather than eating in your car or on the go. Overall, the new Safeway is amazing and one of the best I've seen. I've lived in the East Bay for seven years and it's nice to finally have a store that exceeds our expectations. I go into this store for 1 item only now -- one variety of the Safeway breads, but once again there is none on the shelf at 3pm. Most of the other bread spaces are full and unsold, but this one is empty again and even after pointing it out several times, they don't have the sense to order a higher quantity of the sold out bread and less of the other un-purchased breads. I've given up on the coconut flakes I used to buy in the bulk food section -- the bin has been empty for 4 months even after talking to a manager about it. The only other reason left to return here is to get a laugh at the prices: $5 for a small slice of cheesecake, $3 for a slice of sheet cake. I have seen one of the smallest Safeways in the Bay Area. Now I have seen one of the largest. This review comes from the second day of grand opening. This store occupies the old Target store, and It makes use of its space as the store contains 17 aisles with a split down the middle, 14 checkout stands and pretty much everything Safeway has to offer in a store, including full service deli, bakery, pharmacy floral dept. and Starbucks. It also adds an outdoor dining area and FREE WIFI! It features the 2011 version of the Lifestyle layout, which includes the square aisle hangers that face away from the front and a re-colored bakery color scheme that matches the deli. Other than that, it's what you'd usually find at a Lifestyle'd store. The outside fasade of the store is beautifully sophisticated. The pharmacy's decor has a wood feeling, which resembles a doctor's office. With this store located right across the street from El Cerrito Del Norte BART, it is the best place to grab a bite to eat, and you don't have to eat at the station either. There are over 25 tables throughout the store. This store is the best Safeway I have ever been in! It would be the absolute perfect Safeway if it included a gas station that is separated from the parking lot. Maybe later it would happen. Good enough place for a consolidated market. Nothing really spectacular about it or outstanding to be honest except a few departments like the meat, deli, bakery and flowers. Lots of people in here so I try to avoid the crowds since it can be a long wait :( read more
