Was at this location on a Sunday evening, shelf was empty for the item I wanted, asked the gal working at shelf checkout. She said the girl with the keys would be right back and she would send her to check the back. She (Beatrice), the girl with the keys returned 15 minutes later.. Told her what I looking for, said it was on aisle 15, told her I'd started there. She had a bit of an attitude. I watched her go towards the back, turn and come back down the next aisle to tell me her manager said they were sold out. SHE NEVER SPOKE TO her manager. All in all 25 minutes later I walked out empty handed. Too many folks without a jobs to be putting up with this treatment, clean house Safeway, get rid of the attitudes and hire people who want to work. read more

I want to commend the security guard who was on duty on Friday, 3/15 at 9pm. A woman with a shopping cart full to the top sped past my husband and I, and out the door, without paying. That security guard was right there outside the door and he stood in front of her and would not let her take the cart. She walked quickly to the parking lot and sped off in a tan colored pickup truck. We couldn't believe it, but unfortunately, she was probably a regular. She was a thin, decently dressed black woman with some scars on her face. Often you see security guards just standing around, but this guy was on the case! There are some seedy characters around that Safeway, especially at night, so I just really appreciate the efforts of this security guard! Besides that, it's my neighborhood Safeway so I support it, but for some strange reason, they often run out of 1/2 gallon vit D whole milk. read more

Safeway on Foothill - You are my most favoritest Safeway ever! Safeway on Jackson Street... eh not so much... Foothill Safeway is always clean, has good parking, and nice staff. I have come here at all hours of the night, early morning, rush hour, etc. It's never packed! The parking lot isn't shifty like the Jackson street one can be. A review for the pharmacy at Safeway in Hayward on Foothill Blvd. - In a nutshell, if you or a loved one rely on a specific medication, especially one that represents a matter of life or death, rest assured that you/they will simply be allowed to die before this pharmacy stocks your necessary medication in a timely manner. After multiple issues with extended wait time for out of stocks, I finally spoke with the manager and the reason they cited after my child's medication was inordinately delayed a half dozen times, was that they are under pressure to keep their inventory in check in order to meet Safeway Corporate's $$$inventory$$$ demands. So basically, corporate greed over human health - no big surprise there. I stopped coming here a long time ago because my child needs his medication to be healthy, as most of us who take medication do. However my doctor inadvertently called his prescription in to Foothill Safeway pharmacy last week ON A FRIDAY and it sent me into panic mode because I knew that the pharmacy's ineptitude would probably send my child to the hospital. I scrambled in an attempt to reach his doctor before closing so she could send it to our regular pharmacy to no avail. And sure enough, I was right. Upon arriving at Foothill's pickup window I waited approximately 10 minutes with no one in ahead of me, while the two pharmacy employees had their heads down counting pills in the back. A family walked up after seeing me at the pickup window and instead of getting in line walked directly to the drop off window to pick up their prescription. The pharmacist knew them, looked up, saw me waiting, and helped the other family at the drop off window as they chatted her up. When I was finally helped, I already knew the answer but I was so desperate I held out hope that they might actually have his medication. They checked, and of course did not have it, and could not even offer me an approximate date for when they'd have it in. They offered up the feeble excuse that they didn't want to stock it because it was an inventory issue and it affected their bottom line. So please, please, please save yourself or loved one from the abysmal service this pharmacy represents, especially if you hope to get your medication on a timely basis. read more

I came to this Safeway because their hours said they were open until midnight on 11/25/20 I walked in to the store around 10:50 and they announced that the store was closing at 11pm!! There were many people at the store , I spoke to the manager and he stated that they were closing early because it wasn't busy. It wasn't busy because they kept telling people that arrived after 11 that they were closed. Next time don't post hours that are subject to change in a short notice. read more

The store's shelves are always empty. There are never any cashiers available during peak hours. Management is never around. Awful store to shop at. The only reason why they are still in business is that they are the only local store around. I'm hoping that Whole Foods will open a store across the street when the new shopping center is open so we can give them some competition and shut it down, or make them improve. It's been a few years since shopping at this location. It still has its charm, and very friendly staff. Stopped as a was passing by, and was also shocked to find better prices and quantity of fruit than other local grocery stores in the area. I normally shop in San Leandro. I also feel there is more of an adult atmosphere of working class than the rift raft. San Leandro has a high spike in crime related issues. read more

I don't expect too much when I go to any large grocery chain store. I realize that they have issues with employees who are no-shows or turn out to be lazy, so I expect that. I also allow myself a fair amount of time to shop and even more time to get through the cashiers. Safeway is famous for understaffing, so I expect the process to be slow. I do have to say though, I was in this store this past week and decided to get some lunch at their sushi area. The young woman making sushi asked if I wanted anything. I said, "I'd like fresh tuna." She stopped what she was doing and took about five minutes to make me what I asked for. It was fresh and tasty and I truly enjoyed it. She is an excellent example of what service is all about. So, it's people like her that I offer a four star rating. read more

Been shopping at this Safeway for 50 years and I had such a terrible experience I don't ever want to go back. I wanted to get some lunch meat from the Deli so the was a long line. That was Ok when it was my turn the young lady went down where they keep the meat and I told her what I wanted and she smiled and said yes, I waited and then I pointed to the mortadella she smiled and said yes, got it so then I asked for salami she looked at me and said yes and she waited until I showed her what it was. Good I got that. Then I asked her for Liverwurst well I didn't see any out there and all she keep saying was yes when I asked if they had any, So I said you don't understand a word I say do you and she said Yes so, I asked her if she could please get someone to help and she stood there and keep saying yes. Well, I'm an 80-year-old diabetic and I'd been there for a good 25-30 minuets finally got someone to help me and they said they were out of it. So ok did my shopping got in line and just so happens the checkout gentleman was the manager. I told him what happened and said I understand everyone needs to work but they need to train them a little more because this young lady did not understand one word I said. No apology just said we will all talk about it tonight. and did I forget to put my number in so I put my number in and that was that. So, Trader Joe's here I come, they care there. read more

So obviously I come to this Safeway because it's the closest and most convenient for me. Sometimes it's hit and miss regarding lines, but overall I think their produce is normally fresh and the store itself stays pretty clean. I would normally use the self-service checkout, but a few days ago I went through a regular cashier and he was hands down, the nicest cashier ever. I didn't buy a lot but there was a coupon that came for something I bought. He scanned the coupon and gave me cash back instead of the coupon. So nice. I normally throw those coupons away or don't take them at all. His customer service definitely made my morning. I wish I remembered his name. But regardless, Safeway should have him teach customer service to all employees. I wouldn't normally yelp a grocery store, but this past experience was something I wanted to share. read more

We'll obviously this is the best Safeway in the area. Only like a mile away from the Castro valley Safeway and in a much more populated area. Also a lot bigger, so therefore more choices. They have more lines open so you get out if here faster. Definitely will go here more often then the cv location even though a little farther. However only complaint is I don't think this location is 24 hours. I believe they close at 1 am. Is there only downfall. read more

Where do I begin? This place stinks starting with the checkout lines that daily trail down the aisle. However, last night's experience was dramatically worse than that. I purchased a cartload of groceries. FYI, I'm a senior with limited mobility. The checker called four times for a courtesy clerk to no avail, while I waited for 15 minutes. Asked for manager and he was nowhere to be found. Went home and called customer service three times and waited with no luck. If you hold long enough the line cuts off. Another 30 minutes. Went online to fill out a complaint. Clicked submit and and it said, "Service unavailable. Please try again later." Another 30 minutes. Called corporate. If you don't have a name or extension, you can't get through. Dialed "0" for operator but it asked the same question about name or extension. Another 10 minutes. We're talking 1-1/2 hours now! Most disturbing is that it appears there's no way to make a complaint. Honestly, one star is extremely overstated. This is a minus 5. read more

While the produce is pretty good, wide selection of organic products, the service such as deli and cashiers are sooooo slow!! I've been here for almost 20 min and the lady has made one long sandwiche and two veggie bowls. While the other counter worker is just walking around not helping out! Totally unacceptable!! Great thing about Safeway is if you buy flowers, and you get two or more bouquets they don't charge you for combining the bunches into a single arrangement. Lucky charges you like $4 in comparison. I generally don't come to this location, as I have one that's closer to me, but I come here every now and again if I need to grab something really quick. Service is decent but sometimes it's hard to find someone to assist you. And like Lucky sometimes they don't open enough registers or the self-service check-outs will glitch out. As with many grocery stores of this type, much of their so-called selection includes their store brand, Safeway Select. Still, I think this is the only place where I can find my Southwest Salsa (also Safeway Select Brand) read more

The worst customer service.... i ordered a cake, i came 30 mins early to pickup so when she looked around and discovered it wasnt done and told me pickup was for 1pm i said ok thats totally fine, i went and bought sushi and a drink for me and my kid and we sat with my 2 month old twins, instead of going back in 30mins i waited for 45mins just to make sure i was giving them time, i returned with my twins and sat waiting for 10mins for customer service with my at this time crying babies, yes BOTH of them... and before i could actually recieve any help i looked over the counter to realize she was doing 1 of my 2 cakes i ordered, which left me alil upset only because if they were running behind i would have thought we would recieve a call, thinking thats why they asked for our numbers in the first time, i then receive service only for her to tell me she has started on my smaller cake and has to start me bigger one right after........ this! has really upset me ive been sitting here with my 3 kids for over an hour no one ever said it was gonna take another hr to finish up no call, no just stopping by in the sitting area as she passes me by.... i instantly become upset and come out of my charactor ONLY because i have my twins with me who are only little babies, she brushes me off with an attitude and share smart remarks with her co-workers, one lady who works with her named Patricia actually takes the time to share she understands how this could be frustrating given my situation that instantly calmed me down just to know she understood my situtation and how hard it was sitting in a grocery store with little babies who at this time is very upset and a 7 yr old in and out the restroom... i appreciate that employee she then brought the cakes up to me in the front and helped me to my car. so she is definitley a star in my eyes but for the other rude employees i have no words... atleast kind words i truly belivin if you dont have nothing good to say dont say it at all...... read more

We went to purchase one of the cakes they have ready on display for my brothers birthday. We chose the cake we wanted and as the lady prepared do we could take it. We went to go look for a candle. I have previously bought many quick cakes from this store so I gave them my trust. We payed and headed home ready to sing happy birthday! Once we began singing happy birthday we noticed the cake seemed a little off but we figured it was just us. After singing happy birthday we cut the cake and noticed the frosting was hard and crusty. Once we looked at the fruit on top not only was it dry but it even had mold on it. My brother was the only one that tasted it when we did the whole bite the cake before you cut it tradition. He said it tasted rotten since it was a tres leches cake. We felt so bad that we had ruined his birthday. We rushed to get our money back and although the manager was very polite the lady who sold us the cake was one of the most rude and stubborn ladies I have ever encountered. She told us that it was not her responsibility when she was the one that probably traded the good cake we chose for an old nasty one she had on the side! Some of the staff is polite while others are not so sociable and some are on the ghetto side. . The kids working the carts and bagging are rude and need some customer service training skills. I have to give this Safeway props where props are due. I enjoy getting Safeway's sandwiches or breakfast wraps, and thus, I find myself going to many Safeway locations for said delectables. This particular Safeway blows all other locations it if the water when it comes to the quality and time they put into these sandwiches. They are amazing! Other locations seem to focus on quick turnover. The focus at the Foothill Safeway in Hayward prioritizes the quality of the food over all else. This does not mean they are slow. The slowness you may experience is from the line that forms every week day morning if people yearning for their breakfast wraps/sandwiches. Why other locations don't hear the veggies and fillings of the wraps separately is beyond me! They heat the fillings and melt the cheese over them and then heat the tortilla separately. Nothing harshes mellow more than a "hot" sandwich or wrap with cold fillings. Kudos to you, Foothill Safeway team, for doing it right by sticking to your guns and preparing excellent sandwiches for all us sinners in the world. read more

Once again I am back to review this poorly performing store. I now only go when desperate. I would rather drive another 10 more miles to Castro Valley Safeway. 1 month ago: Veggie section had rotten fruit. I mean seriously? I hunted down the lone worker and asked why they would have rotten oranges (several) and rotting grapes. They could be seen a mile away. She said short staffing. Does food decompose in one day? Ofcourse manager was not available. 1/4/12: Husband bring groceries back and I find spaghetti in same bag with dish soap which has leaked over spaghetti (Fortunately its in a plastic bag). Why would they do that? Soap and food? Hubby told me the ringer/bagger said she was very tired. Sigh! I am convinced the manager doesn't care. This store should be closed or replaced. read more

I will never come to this Safeway ever again. Today was my first time at this Safeway because I needed to pay my car registration and this Safeway had a DMV self service machine. Before I headed to pay my car registration, I stopped by at the Deli Café and standing there for more than 10 minutes to try to get a breakfast sandwich. The lady who's preparing a burrito for a customer ahead of me and that customer had many special requests for his burrito. After she placed the burrito inside the oven to heat it up, she was wrapping turkey separately without asking me. I don't understand why cant she ask what would I want to order. My feeling was she didn't see anyone besides the customer who's waiting for his burrito. This place is suck and the employees works there are all suck. read more

The only reason I even go to this location is because I live right up the street. This store SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The shelves are always empty or stocked with expired items. One time I bought bagels and when I opened them the next day they were COVERED in mold. Not a few spots, COVERED! WTF? No matter what time of day it is, there is always only two registers open. A few months back, I went at 5:30 on a Friday. What a joke. There were only two registers open, one was self-check out, and I was the 13th person in a line that was 23 deep!!!!!!! Seriously? I spent more time in line than I did shopping. Drive a few miles farther and go to Castro Valley. The Safeway at the top of the Blvd is nice, clean and always stocked. Or go to Lucky's 02/12/13, I went in to grab a few things and got in the 15 items or less line. The guy in front of me had 25+ items, I just thought he didn't see the sign. As the cashier was ringing him up, he was THROWING the guy's stuff on the counter. When he was almost do ringing him up, the cashier said, rather rudely, 'Just so you know, this line is 15 items or less.' Uhh... Maybe if you had more lines open, people would feel like they have to get in a short line. Every other line, there were 3 open, had atleast 4 people in it. If you don't like your job, get another one. Don't take it out on the customer, we are job security. read more
