Great place to get Asian specific items from Dorian to Gochujang paste and many items in between. Yesterday I needed some spring roll wrappers and they had some in the frozen section. I always go there for fresh vegetables. The do have a fish section, but I have yet to try. I shop here regularly only because they carry many items that I need that aren't sold in traditional supermarkets. I recently bought a few yanyan's and all of them were expired, what a bummer. They also tend to close earlier than their actual store hours! I came here 15 minutes before 8 and their doors were closed and locked. Smell of fried fish hits you when you walk in, not unpleasant at all, it smells great and it's cool they'll fry any fish you buy for free. 88 has been around for maybe 1-2 years but it feels like it's been there for decades, they have cool packaged and canned goods from all over Asia and some Islander specific goods like Cassava and lamb shoulder. I would come for frozen and packaged stuff. The reason for the rating is I wish their seafood, meat, and produce vendors were better. I would not trust some of the stuff being sold here, especially after coming to grab strawberries for the kids and there was a huge moldy box right in the front row. If something like that is left there what goes un-noticed? They have a hilarious and sad "SHAME" list of shoplifters they printed out with dates and what they stole near checkout. I will continue coming here for sure to support them since they are the closest market to my bros apartment and will update this review if things change over time. read more

While I was shopping here, I overheard a conversation going on at Register #2. The cashier at that register was being so rude to the customer she was helping. The customer has a return because the produce or whatever she had bought was spoiled and had gone bad. Apparently, the cashier had asked what what was wrong with it, and the customer responded "would you eat that?" Then, the cashier responded and said "why you ask me if I would eat that!?" The conversation kept carrying on for a good 5 plus minutes and the cashier kept arguing over and over and saying the same thing of why you ask me if I would eat that, and then eventually said I just asked you what's wrong with it. Of course, the customers probably thinking why would you bother ask, you can clearly see it's rotten and gone bad... Either way, the customer still got her money back, but the customer service from the cashier was just so plain rude. The prices here aren't even cheap or reasonable, I wouldn't come here again! read more

Finally, an asian market closer to home! I still think they are in a soft opening as they do not have everything stocked still but still nice to see this market on Mission Blvd. It's a pretty big market with fresh meats, fish and veggies. This location replaced Eco Thrift. Many of the veggies are pre-packed for smaller portions. I saw some veggies starting to mold or wilt but I think it's because there was not many people shopping when they first opened. Now, after a couple of months opened, the parking is super packed. I do want to mention that the one entrance and exit to this parking lot sucks as well and as well as the parking spaces. The entrance is so small to have two cars enter or exit or it maybe, just the drivers can't drive?! Haha They need to rearrange the parking spaces as there is so much empty spaces. The prices are decent but some are expensive. They have the delicacy whole crepe cakes in the frozen section! I will have to try their many flavors. NOT THE PLACE TO BUY LIVE CRABS. When you buy a live crab here at this store, the worker gets it from their aquarium. The crab is still soaking and dripping in water, is hurriedly put in a heavy paper bag, then into a plastic bag and then weighed. In essence, the weight of the water plus the soaked heavy paper bag and the thick plastic bag is also charged to you at $13.99 per lb. This comes to a cost of about $2. OMG! Is this legal? Is this a scam? I complained and all I got was a blank stare. So, off I go and I went to 99 Ranch Market in Fremont and bought wifey's crab. They had a much more honest sales practice. The crab is put in the scale and weighed by itself. Then it is priced, then put in a plastic bag. Very Legit! I now stay away from 88 Market because of their dishonest practice. Came in as i was driving by and seen that this place was open. Parking was easy to find but the lot is on the smaller size and street parking isn't available. This place is just as any fish market, veggies, meats, seafoods, drinks, frozen goods, dry goods and everything else. They even have an indian section. With Fiji delights (Bongo, tin pulsami, bhuja, cha biscut) and halal tin mutton (7.50). The fish isle was a bit messy and wet (be careful), but they had an amazing sale on dungeons crab. Fish had some great deals as well. There were a bunch of signs around with mention of soft sale. Also picked up 2x spicey ramen, they had a deal of $3.99 for one and it was buy one get one free. (These usually go for 6.99 each at Ranch 99 and Seafood City) The cashier was really nice and friendly. If you use Credit or debit they do check id to make sure it is you (so many places dont do that and I really appreciate that extra step). read more

This place is actually called 88 Seafood Supermarket. I've been looking forward to this place opening. We were driving by after breakfast and noticed it was open! It was a soft opening, so there were some empty shelves, but the shelves that were not empty were stocked to the brim (is that a saying?). I was not familiar with most of the items in the store. I was a bit overwhelmed, but having a blast! I found an incredible bargain on red curry. We also bought some fried garlic, which we have cooked with a lot! It's delicious. The back of the store is chock full of fresh fish. Again, I was overwhelmed. Also, I was just browsing and wasn't in the market for fish (literally). I will definitely stop back and learn more about all the different products on the shelf. After lunch at the strip mall across the street, we decided to walk over to 88 Market to check it out. The market has its own parking lot in front, which makes shopping convenient. The store is bright, well organized and clean. 88 is an Asian market that has a good size produce section on the right with meat and seafood in the back. The seafood section had a wide variety fish and shellfish and they had tanks of live fish, crab and lobster. There are seven aisles of canned, bottled and dry goods. In front of the store, they have an extensive selection of brands of rice. Wow! Then right in front of the registers, they have a Hall of Shame consisting of 8x10 color pictures of customers caught shoplifting. Shoplifters beware! Since I shop in SF Chinatown, I see that the prices are about 10-20% higher, but for the convenience it would be worth it especially for residents in the area. read more

Compared to the larger Asian market chains around here (e.g. Marina Foods, 99ranch ,etc), this place is a bit smaller and older. The parking is small and a bit cramped as well, it was packed when we arrived but we luckily found parking spot after waiting for someone to leave. I can't imagine during peak hours on a weekend afternoon. It's located off Mission Blvd near Sonic Burger. I was pretty amazed at the large selection of seafood, I was going to come here to buy crab closer to Thanksgiving but after reading the most recent reviews on the mistreatment of some customers, I decided not to come back. The vegetable/fruits selection is a bit smaller than the larger Asian supermarket but the prices are comparable. The market is a bit old and run down inside, I felt a bit gross walking through the store. The aisles are cramped so only one cart can go through at a time. Given there's not much Asian market in Hayward besides Seafood City, Island Pacific, etc, this is a good alternative if you don't want to drive too far. read more

This is the closest Asian market to my boyfriend's house so we usually shop here when we need last minute groceries and don't have time to drive further. I've had several negative experiences here and the convenient distance is not worth it anymore. All the fresh vegetables are so dirty; I find dirt and bugs every time I wash them. I literally have to wash them multiple times to remove all the dirt. During my last visit, we purchased frozen ramen noodles that were moldy! How do frozen noodles grow mold?? It was well before its expiry date so I'm assuming their refrigerator wasn't cold enough which caused it to spoil. Solid Asian market in Haystack! It's nice to not always have to cruise to Oakland or San Jose to get some authentic groceries. They have plenty of meats, seafood & veggies to create whatever your heart desires during this quarantine. Just gotta make sure to come not too late if you want them to slice your meat up! Color me unimpressed... Small Asian market, crowded very tight aisles. Some produce ok, some past their prime. Seafood was mostly frozen and unappetizing. Quite a few things marked "misc." If you're not familiar you're SOL! I wouldn't go back, a lot of small markets have better and fresher ingredients, with much better signage. Went in to this store yesterday and won't be going back. We bought some tiger shrimp that once cooked, was horrible. My husband took everything that we bought, back to the store. The fish may look fresh, but there are flies flying over and sticking to the seafood. This place is NOT sanitary. Where the seafood is, there is water all over the floor from the melted ice that the seafood is packed on. Flies everywhere. Very shady establishment. No one speaks English. Can't get a manager's name. Poor customer service. Was physically assaulted when I tried to take a photo of a cashier. Called local police department to confirm I was not breaking the law with taking her photo - dispatch validated I was not breaking the law. Culturally speaking, its unfortunate that this business continues to run without any regard or any accountability of how they treat their customers. Yes, we won't be shopping here anymore - but that doesn't resolve the issue of something just is not right at this store. I filed an incident with the police to document the events and he agreed - something is definitely shady at this store. Update: Feb. 12, 2022 Was able to get a hold of a very friendly employee at store #4, San Leandro on Feb. 11, 2022. I requested to speak with a manager and a manager was not available. She asked if she could be of assistance. I explained in detail of the incident that took place at store #3, Hayward. She profoundly apologized and was in shock and horror that a cashier behaved in this manner. She said she would relay my concerns to a manager. I have yet to hear back from a manager. I have been looking forward to the opening of an Asian market nearby and this store did not disappoint! Since it was a soft opening, I wasn't expecting all the shelves to be filled but there was a overwhelming amount of items out. It was lacking on meat and seafood but expected due to soft opening. Great variety of meat, seafood, produce, and dry items. Prices were decent, some items were cheaper and some were more expensive than other stores in nearby cities. I moved to Hayward a year ago from the Peninsula (previously San Jose) and was really feeling the lack of an Asian supermarket in town. There were certain items we had to remember to pick up in San Jose when we were off visiting relatives. It's going to be so great to have one in town so I can pick up fresh clams (in at least 5 varieties!), beef bones for soup, taro root, chrysanthemum tea, and different brands of instant noodles than what the normal grocery stores sell. It looked like it's primarily stocked with Chinese and Vietnamese ingredients. I was looking for some Japanese dashi powder or at least some kind of kelp/bonito flakes to make dashi for miso soup, but they didn't seem to have any. That's fine -- my husband is Vietnamese so most of what we're looking for is here, and a lot of the shelves were still empty so I might have more luck next time. I really look forward to coming back here to get ingredients for hot pot! read more
