This is the fourth time I've noticed this during my shopping experience. As I traveled up and down the aisles, I navigated around Safeway employees who were shopping for online customers, filling the aisles with their oversized carts. I counted approximately five or six of them. When I reached the checkout area, all the self-checkouts were occupied, and there was a line of eight people waiting. The only cashier that was open had a line of more than ten customers. From this experience, I conclude that Safeway prioritizes the convenience of customers shopping from home over those who are physically in the store. Safeway, you need to do better. read more

I ordered a half sheet of tres leches cake on 7/19 and was so disappointed. The cake was mostly whipped cream filling which was very sweet and less than 1 inch actual tres leches. The tree leche was good itself but disappointed that I got mostly whipped cream filling all over and very little bread. read more

So here I am at Safeway on $5 Friday AND also the beginning of a holiday weekend. There's only like 3 cashiers and the lines are crazy!!!! Whoever the store manager is did not plan well. Even the self checkout had long lines!!! One more thing that's even more important than the long lines. With all the 1 star reviews, it seems no one is listening, but here goes. My biggest beef is that the store cannot seem to stock items during non-busy times. Is there no night crew anymore? I've never had this issue at Lucky or Nob Hill, and it is actually hard to navigate the store many times. I've had mostly reasonable service at checkout, though a strange refusal to stock paper bags is frustrating but not the fault of checkers...are you listening, management? This location bakes a mean jalapeno cheese focaccia (in fresh bagels section). Better than other Safeways. I was addicted for awhile -- it's heaven when it comes out of the oven at 6ish am. Warm, comforting breakfast. The time isn't always consistent. This location also has dry wings at the hot food counter sometimes, and the 50% off old deli food is occasionally food gone bad. I've learned to stay away from the 4-squares, the ones that are 3 cold salads (potato, macaroni, kale, etc) and a roll. Bathroom is generally clean, tho both toilet seats in the womens have broken hinges -- seat will unexpectedly shift under you sometimes. Store's always neat, clean, and organized, so kudos to management. read more

Store is clean, service is ok, with exception of 1 cashier (Cora)....do NOT get in her check out line. She will overcharge you. Been over charged for meat, bakery items, wine. She is so busy chatting, she's not paying complete attention to her job. If you have 2 different muffins from the bakery, she scans 1 of your items twice (typically the more expensive of the 2). Same with wine. When called out on the wine overcharge, her response was "well, let's see...how about if I give you an $8 credit"? Ummm, how about if you void your mistake, and rescan it correctly? We will wait in a longer line, or use self checkout to avoid this cashier. read more

I've been shopping at Safeway stores for over 15 years. I love the company and usually give a lot of grace for errors or mishaps. I have to say this store is a disgrace. The customer service is the worst. They literally give zero shits about helping customers. I've had multiple issues with my grocery delivery, saying over half the items were out of stock. Last time I drove straight to the store and found every item they were too lazy to include in my order. The manager said he would look into it and get back to me, he never did. I moved to hollister last year and was happy to have a a Safeway, but this is a horrible store. It's rarely organized. The employees always seem miserable. The kids standing out front with the carts have headphones in and aren't even friendly when you say hello first. It's got to be the worst place to shop. I have asthma and hate wearing a mask to shop because it gets difficult after a while. I use the delivery option to avoid this issue. Today my order was over an hour late. Nobody reached out, or tried to provide an update. I had to call the customer service number and find out it would be a half an hour more before it arrives and they couldn't give me a reason as to why. I also had to leave for work so, now I have to work a 15 hour shift and no groceries. Honestly, this has to be the worst store to ever exist. They're lazy and rude. My friend and I stopped here on the way to Pinnacles National Park to buy some supplies and use the restroom (which is significantly cleaner than any restroom you'd find at a park). Pretty big, clean and spacious. Has 3 entrance doors which I thought was unique to the Safeway's I've seen before lol. The bathroom had no seat covers and one of them had a broken seat. Just went there at 5:15am. All aisles were blocked with cardboard boxes as shelves were being stocked. Had to park the cart and attempt to navigate around the boxes. The deli counter was not even open. They said they would be ready in an hour! Very frustrating and last trip to this place. Nob Hill is so much better organized. read more

Grocery pick up was terrible. I injured my knee and couldn't walk so I thought I would utilize the curbside grocery service instead of driving the mobile cart around. My order was supposed to be done by 1PM but I had to call and ask why it was 3PM and I still hadn't gotten notified that it was complete. The man told me it was ready but they just didn't mark it so I wasn't notified. Substitutions were far from comparable. I ordered a 12pack of 12oz cans but got a 6 pack of 7.5oz cans (but I was still charged for the 12pack) I ordered 36 string cheese sticks and was given a 12 pack of cheese slices? Still charged for the original item. The shoppers need to be trained better. I am very disappointed. read more

So I'll start with the good, they have a a lot of friendly cashiers like cece who are genuine friendly and nice. The store itself is usually clean the bathrooms aren't bad either. The products is where my problem lies. I have had either spoiled, moldy or expired items on every single shopping trip I've been on as of late. My latest trip yesterday included some ears of corn. I went to cook them for my family tonight and you can see what I found below out of 5 corns only one was salvageable. I called Safeway right away and I told them I just wanted to inform them so they could go through the corn that way no other customers would have issues. The womans response to me was it's normal to have that in corn?! I told her I'm pushing 40 and have been cooking for 25 years and not once have I ever had a caterpillar in my corn and my family loves corn and we eat it regularly. She suggested bringing the corn back for a refund caterpillars and all Im very put off by the response of Safeway and the fact that they don't see to care about quality assurance of their products and produce. I would suggest if you must shop here that you check items carefully before bringing them home. read more

I have ordered curbside through this Safeway location multiple times. Today I was charged for an item I did not receive. In the past I have gotten bad produce. The time it takes the staff members to bring groceries to the car is unreasonably long. Went to Safeway this afternoon around 2:30 and purchased over 200.00 in food. The clerk in isle 6 was efficient, however not friendly, which is fine. The guy who was bagging my groceries was pretty rude. Although we didn't have words I could tell that he didn't want to be bagging my things and seemed disgusted. He threw things into the bags so hard that when I got home some of the meat I had purchased had come out of the package and had fallen to the bottom of the bag. Other packages had been ripped open and seemed as though he had stuck his thumb through the plastic. Once all the bags had been placed in the cart he shoved the cart at me and said have a nice day and didn't even look at me. My daughter was with me and walks with a cane. I have a back injury and park in the handicap parking space. This fool didn't even ask if I needed help out, which I believe is customary. My daughter and I unloaded our own groceries which is ok but it would have been nice to have been asked and treated with some courtesy. read more

This review is for their home delivery service. My husband and I bought over 200 dollars in groceries (which is easy to do) and decided to have a home delivery since both of us work so much and still go into the office. Today our order was delivered yet over half of our groceries were delivered. Well over 100 dollars never even made it to our house. The delivery woman was in such a hurry to get out that she ran doorbell and ran away. When I called customer service they honestly couldn't care less. We will not be doing any online orders and will probably start going to nob hill next door. I haven't had much issues in the store but I would never order online again. Want to update everyone. They had reordered my groceries to be delivered today between 8-10am and I've been on hold for ten mins waiting to find out where my delivery is. One of the newer and better stores. Clean and good selection. Starbucks inside. Gas station has lowest prices in town. Deli line can be slow moving during lunch and late afternoons. Soups are usually limited to 2 choices. Good wine selection. Bakery sometimes runs out of rolls. Parking is ok, but can get crowded. read more

Just left from grocery shopping with my grandmother and jeez was our bagging girl rude. Left at 5:20 cashier was Marissa in maybe Isle 3, she was very nice where as the girl helping her was so rude. She had long hair with extreme blonde highlights and bangs. We brought our own bags because #savetheplanet right, and after bagging everything she stood there and wanted my grandmother to lift the bags into the cart. There was only two of them both filled to the top. Even for the girl after we asked her to put them in the cart had to use two hands. I tried to lift them from behind the cart but was too short so I pushed them down and asked her if she could put them in. She stared at me for a second and rolled her eyes at me then looked at my grandma as she said thank you and rolled her eyes at her too. Just before us she was having a whole conversation with someone else in line, being super friendly. She shouldn't be working where decent costumer service is needed. Expecting an elderly lady to lift her own groceries into the cart. Attitude and disrespect are so ugly, girl pls get a new job. read more

The pharmacy department in Safeway is terrible service the prescriptions are never ready they have long wait times even after they promised of the prescription would be ready at 2 PM it turns out that sometimes they lose the prescription don't know what you're talking about. i was just in the store. i was just getting a few energy drinks and donuts. i went to one of the registers and put my things down and as the lady at the register watched me do it. there was a group of girls in front of me that forgot their mochi ice cream and she decided even tho she watched me put my things down she scanned the ice cream as mine and then gave me a dirty look when i told her those are not mine. she then continued to stare at me and with attitude "why didn't you tell". i told her those are note mine and she saw me put down what was mine. that was really rude and unnecessary. she has dark brown hair, short, on the heavier side, black eyeliner. i didn't see her name tag so i'm not sure her name. but i would suggest going to self check out unless you want attitude your whole transaction read more

This negative review is towards the meat department. I went in to buy salmon on 7/20/2019 at 7pm and the man at the counter gave me a snare look and told me to hold. I did not appreciate his eye roll specially that it's not like I was being impatient. After he finished placing hamburger meat back into its section he drags all five 7oz salmons into a plastic bag, keep in mind he didn't change gloves after touching raw meat, and dumps them into a plastic bag and half wraps it! I don't know what this guy's problem was but I left the Salmon at the register and decided to go elsewhere! I'm new to Hollister and thought safeway was a good place for my groceries since I always go to the locations in San Jose. But sadly I will stop going to Safeway for my groceries I was falsely charged in this location. I bought only 3 Items and the cashier said something was wrong with the printer for the receipts and if I was ok without a receipt and I said that it was fine. Later I found out he charged me around 460 dollars! I called safeway later that day and they let me know this wasn't the first time something like this has happened with that being said I told my bank about the situation and they did a investigation but Safeway denied everything! I will not be coming back to Safeway any time soon. read more

I went to Safeway to buy oysters, I got there at 7:20pm and they close at 8pm in the meat&fish product dept. The employee said that he can't help me because he's training somebody and I asked him nicely if he could just help me real quick because it doesn't take that long to pack the oysters and the fact that they're still open but he said he can't. I was so disappointed. My wife went there to try if they'll help her she got there 7:25pm and same thing he didn't help her. My wife called the manager and told about the concern. The manager talked to the employee if he can help her and the employee told to the manager that he can't because he's training somebody and asked the manager to watch the trainee so he can help my wife but the manager didn't do anything. So they ended up turning away customers. The manager could've done something to this problem since the employee offered an alternative way to help my wife but he wasn't willing to watch the trainee. I understand if you're short staff but if the customer got there on time no matter what you still help customer. This is one of my BIG DISSAPPOINTMENT to Safeway Hollister! I guess I've been here over a dozen times now. Time to write a review. :-P Three stars because it's better than some Safeway's I've been to but it's definitely not the best. It's cozy and has a good selection of just about anything, including the deli/bakery area. I've found so many neat potato salads that I've never heard of here. The bakery offers cookies I've still never seen at other Safeway locations. So why still 3 stars you're wondering? Well.... the staff is not very friendly and has a very limited knowledge of what and where things are in the store. Much less do they know what things are used for. I was under the assumption that most people do grocery shopping once in a while and understand what items are even if they don't use them on a daily basis. Take myself for instance - I am not a cook. I'm terrible at cooking but I learned for years from my grandma what everything in the kitchen was used for. So when I hear items being asked for, at least I can sort of point people in the right direction. I guess it's not a requirement to work here. For that, I'm disappointed. Many times we stop here for specific things while on our way to the central valley. Every single time (I'm not joking, every time) the employee asks me "what's that used for?" I'm sad to say that if I lived in Hollister and this was the Safeway I'd have to do my regular grocery shopping at, I'd drive to San Jose. Did I mention the bathroom here is disgusting every time too. Bring your own TP/tissue because it's out most of the time. A nice store to stop at but not for a regular food shopping spot. The bonus is that there's a gas station here too so you can use your points. read more

Sure Safeway might not have everything that a Whole Foods snob would be looking for but for the average family that doesn't have a crazy exotic taste for rare foods and recipes you can find 95% of what you are looking for here. The guys who regularly work in the produce department are G-R-E-A-T. I am an idiot when it comes to remembering where stuff is and I am always making new recipes and getting ingredients that I might not have gotten before so I am always asking where something is. These guys will ALWAYS help you find something. The meat department guys are great for suggestions and even with dumb questions nobody treats you like some kinda jerk. Checkers are always nice. Baggers are friendly as well. And management, well they are a shining star compared to most supermarkets. Most supermarkets have management that will treat you and the employees like dirt. Quite a few times I have had a store manager (3 different ones actually) ask me if I needed help and there impeccable knowledge of the store is amazing to a dummy like me. Case in point: MANAGER: CAN I HELP YOU SIR? ME: YAH I'M LOOKING FOR A BAG OF WALNUTS. MANAGER: SURE NO PROBLEM IF YOU GO TO AISLE 4 (BAKED GOODS) AND HEAD DOWN 2 THIRDS OF THE WAY ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE ON THE 2ND LOWEST SHELF ARE THE WALNUTS RIGHT BELOW THE SUGAR.....WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO SHOW YOU? ME: NO I CAN FIND IT THANKS SO MUCH! So I head down thinking, no way is this really gonna be there that specifically and sure enough....aisle 4.....2/3 down....right hand side...just below the sugar. I have been shopping at the Hollister Safeway ever since they took over the former K&S Market in 2000, and it's where I shop the most over the other stores in town. I will go to another store if Safeway is too crowded, which it sometimes gets since it's the grocery store preferred by most in Hollister. Safeway is the best in town, though all the other grocery stores have great service too. I always check the weekly Safeway circular for each week's deals. I always have excellent service when making my purchases. All customers: Be sure to have your club card, and save and use coupons whenever possible. read more

The first time I used Safeway's pick up and go my pick up time was at 5:00. I waited for almost 2 hours for my groceries out in the parking lot before I decided I needed to go home. They told me they would call me when it was ready but when it got close to 9 o'clock I decided to call them. Finally at 9:30 at night my groceries were ready for me to pick up. I was so upset over this I decided not to use them again. Today I wanted to give them a second chance because I wasn't feeling good. I can place my order online and they gave me a pick up time of 2 o'clock. I sent my son there at two to pick up the groceries. They told him half an hour. He waited in the car for half an hour and then called again. They told him it would be another half an hour. He's already gone through this game before the first time with me so he knew it could be an all day experience. I didn't want to spend the day doing this so I called and canceled my order. From now on I will be using Nob Hill's pick up and go. The groceries are a little more expensive but at least they do what they say they're going to do. read more

Typical standard fare and everything you would expect from a Safeway in any Cali town. OK selection. I like their chocolate chip cookie they make in store and sold in the variety packs Excellent service and I simply love being asked by every clerk in the building "did I find everything I was looking for?". Every Last One of Them. The isles are wide enough to navigate in most scenarios. I do occasionally get stuck behind Ms. Oblivious to the Known Universe, while she is yakking with Mrs. Center of the Charted and Uncharted Universe. I really like it when the clerk offers to help with the cart. Especially when I have a full basket of groceries and a not so well mannered two year old, screaming she wants to hold the "lerleeler", which may truly exist in one of the bags already in the cart, but tragically escapes daddy's comprehension, which leads to a subsequent meltdown requiring immediate attention. (about half way home daddy realizes the meaning of "lerleeler" is the Fruity Pebbles "cereal" now out of arms reach) Convenience of the gas station is what keeps me coming back over my other local favorite grocery store, Nob Hill. And I am so glad they added a Starbucks inside the store because there is not another Starbucks for at least 300 yards in any direction. read more
