This Safeway is hands down the worst grocery store I have ever stepped foot in. The people are super mean especially at the hot food bar. On top of that they've consistently sold expired food and it's not even worth going back and getting your money back bc they're such a pain. I've had very few good experiences with guest facing employees at this location, Please Please Please hire some baggers for your scanners because they will not help no matter how many groceries you have they will just run the conveyor into your 2foot high pile of groceries and give you snarky looks like you're wasting their time. I spend a lot of money here every week seeing as it's the only location for groceries in leadville. The quality of the food at this Safeway is scary low. I have bought moldy cheese and returned it to find out that the entire shelf of cheese was moldy. I recently bought some Lucerne Pepper Jack cheese and discovered once I got home that a mouse had burrowed into the block. I returned it and found 2 more mouse chewed blocks on the shelf. The produce section is routinely picked over and empty by 6pm. I check every item I buy to make sure it isn't expired. The staff is very polite and friendly though. Don't know why this place is reviewed so low, but it's a pretty good Safeway for such a small twin. Sure, there isn't a fresh seafood station nor a fresh bakery, but they do all have cases with these options. I also appreciate every Safeway that has day-old baked goods! Came visit Leadville for the first time and this is the only groceries store around. It's not big but they got what I need for my Hostel stay nearby. I m from California and I love that they don't charge you for plastic bags like in CA. Will definitely coming back whenever I m in town. read more

Only giving them one star because I can't give them zero. This is by far the worst Safeway I have ever been to and I absolutely hate the fact that this is the only grocery store option in Leadville. They are CONSTANTLY picked over and out of products. Their shelves are never fully stocked or refilled. I can not tell you how many times I regretted not doing my grocery shopping in Summit because I get home from work and run into this Safeway and they're out of what I need. So frustrating to deal with and they need better management, a better buyer, whatever it is. A true disappointment 95% of the time I shop here. read more

Whenever I'm Leadville I stop at Safeway and stock up for my hostel. A 24 pack of water is mandatory for high altitude, as well as a multiplicity of bars for hiking 14ers. I bought some delicious chicken for tomorrow. read more

Don't waste your money on their breakfast burritos! They were ice cold inside and had a foul taste. Had to throw them all away. Most of the food in their deli is undercooked. So a Chuck Roast is $12.99 lb. At 4 lbs it will cost $51.96. However...........if you have the Safeway Club Card you will "only" pay $24.50 for it. GEE, what terrific savings, for a Chuck Roast. The produce Dept. is deplorable with wilted and bruised vegetables and fruits. They play us (locals and Tourists) for Idiots. The solution? A beautiful 40 minute drive to Wal-Mart super Center in Avon, CO or a 30 minute drive to Dillon (Silverthorne) CO and City Market. Or Whole Foods and Natural Grocers in Frisco. The $7.00 round trip in Gasoline is well worth the savings and superior selection. The local Managers here work their tails off and get no support from their Corporate Masters. TERRIBLE. read more

I have lived in Leadville for almost two years now and have delayed writing a review because I wanted to have some experience with the Leadville Safeway and be fair. As others have mentioned, it is indeed the only grocery store in our small mountain town. It is the only choice for those who live here year-round. It is very small, cramped, and (I understand from others) the prices are higher than at other Safeway stores. Sometimes the equipment breaks down (others have mentioned the freezer) and they are out of things. At one point, I started keeping a list of things I couldn't find during each trip--fresh garlic, ground cinnamon, reading glasses in my strength (225) my favorite yogurt (Fage 2%, not a rarity), chutney--but gave up. Products are in unusual places. Some products are so awful that I will publicly advise you not to try them (the sushi). Although very basic products are sometimes nowhere to be seen, the variety of holiday stuff and "extras" is mind-boggling. It is worth a trip just to see what there is. Tonight, there was a kind of grain I had never heard of before--freekah--and I almost bought it just to encourage Safeway to carry more whole grains. But then, there was also a bin full of plush Easter toys--lambs and--frogs (?). Sometimes they have bright blue colored orchids that nature never intended. There are individual serving size measures for popcorn, Valentine headpieces with hearts on them, and you-name-it. The biggest aggravation is the checkout lane. Often only one or two are open and the line extends into a major store aisle, causing annoying aisle blockage. I have never used the self check-out without a disaster. On the other hand--and this is the sole reason for any stars at all--the staff members are the friendliest, most helpful, most caring people you could ask for. I appreciate each one of them The pharmacist spent a long time explaining to me how the flu vaccine is formulated each year. The produce manager sold me a big bag of peeled garlic for the same price as a single head when it wasn't availabe. The cashiers have all worked at Safeway for as long as I have been shopping there and are the friendliest and most helpful anywhere. This despite the fact that they get some doozies of customers, I'm sure. I wish that Safeway's management would see fit to create a store worthy of its staff and its faithful community. Many times when I am shopping at Safeway, I think "I hate this store!" when I can't find the fresh baby spinach. And I have changed my mind by the time I have finished checking out--because of the staff. Safeway management: Please provide the store that our community and your staff deserve. read more

Terribly managed! I would put no stars if I could. Safeway should be ashamed to allow its store to be in such disgusting shape. Smells bad, run down inside, the bathroom area is horrendous. If you go here when Angie is working be prepared for the absolute worst customer service in the grocery store industry... I have never in my life been compelled to write a negative review about a cashier at a grocery store but after several weeks of dealing with her and witnessing her treat people with disrespect I had to. I have seen her treat elderly with not a single ounce of compassion when they ask a simple question about there groceries... it must just really annoy her and she isn't afraid to show it. I've witnessed people look at each other "wide-eyed" and can't believe the way she talks to people. This lady is horrible... I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way about the cashier that just so happens to work the morning when I'm on my way to work... I won't shop here anymore. Aaaah, Safeway. Or as I like to call it, the land of expiration! I shop here twice a month since I live in town and share a car with my husband. I shop on Thursdays and do my returns friday. Even though I try to check every single item when putting it into my cart, a few always slip by so I have to return Friday to get a refund or trade for an item that's not passed it's expiration date. I'd say 30% of the goods in have passed the expiration date. The manager and workers are all very nice and I'm sure they just haven't figured out supply and demand which I'm sure can be complicated in a small tourist town with a 7 month winter. I will probably start doing my shopping in Vail or Frisco once the roads clear up but Safeway is ok. Alco has closed btw so it is really our only option. read more

Safeway is a typical small town monopoly. Other than Saturdays, Alco and Family Dollar there are no other grocers. And anyone that knows those three also know what I mean there. Pretty bad when I can drive to Vail and go to the City Market and save enough that yes it literally pays for the fuel used round trip. Anything else is extra. I typically go to Wal Mart in Avon for supplies and then go to City Market in Vail. Could go to the City Market in Avon, but I know the manager there and I'll just go to Vail instead. read more

Always under staffed. Completely fails to recognize that the largest rush of customers are visitors picking up only an item or two. No express lines. Only two self checks with zero assistance assigned to it and restricts items that can be bought at self check, I.D. required.. Rarely anyone at the customer service desk. Corporate management would do well to allow local management to address these deficiencies. Check out City Market in Buena Vista. This is a far better place to stop for those few supplies you forgot. read more

First of all Craig was a terrible manager. Greg was good, but he's no longer there. Kelvin is bad but not as bad as Craig was. If this store had any competition at all it would immediately shut down. Not many people are willing to drive 40 minutes one-way to the next grocery store, so Safeway can do whatever it wants. The lines are always long and some of the cashiers are rude. There is a handful of pleasant employees, but there are some that I avoid at all costs. The prices are decent for being in the middle of nowhere. They manage to fit a decent amount of variety, but the store is small and that means very narrow aisles, a few of which barely fit two carts wide. And if they have displays in the aisle, it's one cart at a time. None of this matters though, there's no competition. Sure you can buy a few things at Family Dollar, but good there's no produce, no meat, no refrigerated items except over-priced milk and eggs, and no frozen items. So unless you can eat dry cereal, crackers, and canned soup all day every day, you either shop at Safeway or drive 40-45 minutes each way to the next grocery store. read more

We're stuck using this store because its the only grocery store in our small town. Its a constant roller coaster. Sometimes they have what I need, sometimes they're completely out, or stop carrying items I usually buy. They're prices are decent, they offer lots of coupon deals, BUT you have to check EVERY SINGLE RECEIPT because there is ALWAYS mistakes that the registers don't pick up. Which is MADDENING! I'm ALWAYS taking my receipts back, having to wait for them to check all of MY math & then they give me a refund. This is such a waste of time! They have the best manager, he is SO helpful!!! (Craig) & some really good employees, but some really bad ones too! Krista is the rudest person I've ever dealt with in a retail store, anywhere in the world. She is SO rude that I avoid dealing with her. Everyone I know in town say the same thing about her. She's HIDEOUS & I have no idea why they allow her to deal with their customers. She should be fired or put in the back where NO ONE will come into contact with her! She's THAT bad! Stuck using Safeway. Good thing I like to eat & that Craig is there! This is the most disgusting store I've ever been in. I can't believe they spent 2 million dollars on a "remodel", the second you walk in the door you are smacked with the smell of old fryer oil, and it permeates throughout the store. I certainly wouldn't purchase any frozen goods there, I can't tell how many times I've attempted to purchase ice cream there only to find it melted while still in the freezer case - which only tells me one thing: the management team doesn't give a crap about any of it. The previous store manager was always on the sales floor or registers - the new joker is never there, or hiding out in the office. The rest of the management team is either on the phone or yelling at other team members and unaware or oblivious to their surroundings or customers. I've spent my last dollar there, can't stand the low moral of the staff perpetuated by the obviously unworthy and incompetent managers there. read more
