I had the unfortunate need to use the restroom in the El Camino Ave, Mill Valley, Safeway. It was NOT a pleasant experience. Firstly it's disgusting. What would it take to scrub the tile and slap a coat of paint on the walls. Maybe have someone go in from time to time to actually clean it Especially with the virus out there. This might be the slowest Safeway in the world. If not, it would certainly qualify for the final round. That said, the staff are almost always incredibly nice and the services is excellent. It's smaller than the one in Strawberry. Beware if you're going around lunch time during the school year: hordes of students from Tam Valley High across the street descend and mob the deli counter and (the ironically named) express check-out. I like Safeway. Good deals, decent selection of Organic items. Most importantly, wine deals galore. But this location? This outdated location blows, but since it's the closest one to me, I begrudgingly go. The narrow aisles and dark outside are depressing. Go during the school year at lunch time and you will be very sorry! I get it - the Safeway's across from a high school - these kids need to eat - just make sure you steer clear unless you want to be run over. The thing that annoys me the most about this Safeway is it's bare bones toilettries/things selection. Sure, it has laundry detergent and diapers but want something 'unusual' like Scotch tape? I have lived in Mill Valley since 1969. I have watched this Safeway deteriorate over the past 10 years. Today I found the floors dirty, no shopping carts near the entrance to the store, products arranged in such a way that one could not reach them on a high shelf, several basics like rice Chex and corn Chex not in stock, and a manager who just said I'm sorry. I usually stop at a Safeway to get cash back and am always at a bind what to buy in order to get the cash back, 79 cent Snapple? Orbit gum? Chocolate? Well at this Mill Valley Safeway the usual Snapple was not a buy. That day the Buy one Get one Free tags swarmed the place and I couldn't control myself. I ended up purchasing the Buy one get one free POMBar a banana split flavor and an espresso bar chocolate flavor. Leaving Mill Valley and stuck in traffic I understood why the POMBar was buy one get one free; should have gone with the green tea Snapple. Also with the shortage of coca bean and the current scare of the increase of chocolate prices I bought 2 Hershey Dark chocolate fat and large bars which were on sale for 4 for $5.00. FYI: In case you don't know you don't have to but 4 bars, you still get the sale price if you buy one. This is also true with the 10 items for $10, you really don't have to buy 10 items. You can buy one, use the club card and get it for $1. The man boy that rag me up at Register One had pictures of a kid in baseball uniforms and soccer outfits, about 4 or 5 surrounding his cash register screen. I assumed this was my Safeway clerk as a child. Tempted to be a true girl from LA and put him on blast, asking why he has all those photos of flare and pictures of himself on a photo gallery for random strangers to see, I decided to not. It was actually reminded me of when I had to take those cheesy pictures at that age. I treated my cashier like every other out-of-town person who is just here for groceries and cash back. The team at the pharmacy here used to be stellar. Not anymore. A total disaster. Long lines, the staff don't seem to understand the system, it took four attempts to get my prescription filled this week. The staff told another customer that they had over 200 prescriptions waiting to be filled. I'm moving my business to CVS. I hope I never have to set foot in this store again. I should add that the new crew are good, kind people. This is just a failure of management who have taken a good operation and totally destroyed it. read more

I stopped shopping here because of the long lines, and staff that were arguing with each other on several occasions while checking out customers. They were arguing so loudly and being so rude to each other and the customers it was uncomfortable. Several customers in line left the store and I had been waiting what felt like forever and was next up so I reluctantly stayed and was harshly checked out. Very bizarre. When I recently moved to the area I was thrilled to know there is a Safeway within walking distance, but since that moment I have been repeatedly disappointed. This store is dreadful on any weekday due to the hoards of high schoolers from the school across the street. My main problem with this store occurred tonight when a short, dumpy, brunette checker refused to sell me wine because I only had a VALID out of state license. Hello! I'm 23, and I just moved to the area. I don't have a California id yet just sell me my White Zinfandel and let's get on with our lives. A nice girl behind me offered to buy it for me, but she again refused. My advice to you is drive over to the Strawberry Village Safeway. This Safeway is like the DMV of Marin supermarkets. I know that sounds pretty harsh, but the only folks unhappier than the shoppers waiting in line are the folks who work here. I used to think the other Mill Valley Safeway was bad, but boy was I wrong. The only positives I can find at this location are 1) there's plenty of free parking and 2) my Safeway card gets me discounts on select items. But I'm beginning to realize that the money I save on groceries from my loyalty card isn't worth the time I lose just waiting in line here. No matter what time of day I shop at this Safeway or the other M. Valley location, I always wind up waiting 10-20 minutes in line to check out (whether it's for 2 items or 20). What makes it more painful is the giant 3's a Crowd sign that looms overhead (wherein they falsely promise to open up another check-stand in the event that there are more than 3 people waiting in line). This morning there were only two check-stands open and at least 7 or 8 people waiting with full carts of groceries in each line. I saw several employees who just seemed to be walking around the store (not really doing much), and not one of them stepped up to open a new check-stand. I really don't mean to be a Debbie Downer or Negative Nancy, but I'm writing this review with the hope that someone at Safeway corporate recognizes that this particular store has a 2-star average Yelp rating (that's really not good). Needless to say, the customers aren't happy here, and perhaps something should be done to improve the shopper experience. While I'm not a huge fan of spending my whole paycheck at Whole Foods Market down the road, I'd still much rather pay a little extra money for a faster, more pleasant shopping experience. read more

Saying goodbye to my old chum Safeway... I have a push pull relationship with the Safeway. As my debt rises with my Whole Foods grocery bill, so too does my forgiveness of Safeway's chronic understaffing. Back again at the Safeway, I remember....long, long lines and serious cart-jams during the evening rush hour...last night there were two checkers and one was an assistant manager (this is an improvement, usually they are in the office while the workers take the venom of the Marin entitlement crowd, self included). After what seemed to be 30 minutes in line, the gentleman behind me mentioned politely to the asst manager that he appreciated her hard work but it seemed there was a staffing issue. The assistant manager, who was not at all snarly about it, disagreed that there was a staffing problem and told us that her staffing coordinator was excellent and that they had no problem it was just that it was the change of shift and someone went on break. Ok, said I, if you are a patient and I am a nurse, perhaps you will accept the same explanation when you are in pain and there is a shortage of staff. She was a lovely woman but honestly if this is the kind of explanation I get from management staff when I am monumentally inconvenienced and the lines are halfway to the meat department then I see that this store is hopelessly doomed. What would it have taken for her to demonstrate empathy much less respond like a manager? When I suggested that management consider adjusting its shift change so that it does not coincide with the influx of rush hour shoppers she was dismissive (albeit kindly so) and reiterated it is not a problem. Hello. It's not like Safeway is a struggling small business we need to support through the rough spots... Where then, to shop? Get a second job so I can afford groceries at Whole Foods?Paradise Market? OMG NO. Safeway Strawberry? Same problem. Me thinks Rainbow Co-Op in the Mission on my way home from SF after work is the best idea, resurrected from habits of old... So long, old chum. PS I will surely miss the WONDERFUL deli staff...when i can get their attention for service (a feat unlike no other...they are made to do impossible multitasking in that department) I generally have a wonderful experience for there is a woman who puts her Southern stamp of approval on many a deli item for me and she is always right. read more

This used to be a great store and the pharmacy, upon which I depend for several drugs, used to be the best I'd ever known. Since the acquisition by Albertsons the pharmacy for all practical purposes has ceased to exist. It takes at least a week to get a refill on a prescription for routine and widely used drugs. The staff there used to be super sharp and quic The phone/fax automated system for doctors to send orders appears to be non functional or perhaps just ignored by the completely over-loaded staff. I hate to think what would happen in the case of a time-sensitive new prescription order, such as when a child needs an antibiotic immediately-this could be truly dangerous. I'm taking my business elsewhere, and decision I hated to make as this one is so convenient for anyone living nearby. read more

wow. I am at Safeway on Camino Alto in Mill Valley at 5:45 on Monday, 9/12. This is a frigging mess. There are 12!!! people in the EXPRESS LINE. WTF??? Really? All the other lines have at least 6 people. This is inexcusable. We have 2 Whole Foods and a new Real Foods in Mill Valley. Why would I come back to Safeway???? Less than 1/2 of the checkout lines are even open. I run a hedge fund. I am thinking Safeway is a short. I have been coming to this location for over 20 years but I think I'm done. read more

The management of this store is absolutely abominable, though the people who work there are friendly and hardworking. The main problem is at the check out counters. There are simply not enough of them open at any given time. I just bought a ton of stuff for my husband's surprise birthday tonight and the store manager Matt went out of his way to provide great service, helping me pick out cake, deflate a float, pump balloons and was extremely hands on helping everyone at the store any way he can. Ok, of all Safeways out there.... this place has the best service. I came here for some deli meats for the picnic and the lady was just so nice to my demands. 4 slices of salami? This is for the pharmacy. They aren't very helpful in trying to get your medication. It seems as though they don't care at all that someone in need needs to get their medication. Re JUSTIN COLLINS: At Safeway the other day, I had (for me) a full and heavy cart... I have COPD and between the mask and weight of the cart, by the time I reached the checker I was very breathless, which must have shown, because before I could speak the (masked & gloved before everyone was required!) young man said "Are you ok? You must have asthma or worse... Do you have your inhaler?" As it was, I had just picked it up at the pharmacy, but the lack of oxygen was getting to me and I hadn't realized it, so had not yet used it... Justin (I later learned his name) then CLOSED his line, literally refusing to allow me to do anything until I had opened and used the inhaler, then regained my breath. He couldn't get a take-out person for me so he loaded all my groceries himself and locked out so he could take them out to my car. He is to be especially commended for his wonderful, attitude during this time! read more

This Safeway is a disgrace to all other well kept Safeways in the world. As I walk in, I am greeted by a bunch of employees who will not talk to me but will follow me around the store as if I'm about to steal something. Next, I walk up to get some chicken tenders, and they give me the smallest one! Next, I walk up to the donut rack and find them in disarray, with bites already taken out of them. I also can't stand looking for one product, and seeing a mess in the aisle that the employees were too careless to clean up. To top it all off, I wait in line every day by smelly high school students buying Coke and pizza sticks for lunch. And another thing, I can't stand when I punch in my club card, only to find that the deal they once had for bagels is no longer active. Biggest disappointment yet. Just walked in and walked out. There are hardly any cars in the parking lot and all checkout lines are way, way backed up. Not worth it. Too bad as only other close choice in immediate Mill Valley is Whole Foods. I used to shop at Delano's because it was so convenient to my house, but I have switched to Safeway where they all know me now and I LOVE the savings. They make it so easy to see what it on sale and what is the best deal. Today, for example, I bought two spaghetti sauces (that I would normally buy anyway) and got three free. Wow. I think you get a typical bag of groceries for $25 here, as opposed to $40 at the other MV markets, and the selection is great. And I love getting free gas. I must have gotten around $39 so far, and in a Prius that goes a long way. This morning I was feeling especially tired after running the kids to school, so I let Don wheel my groceries out to my car and load up. Great customer service. read more

Our community would be better served if this location closes, to put in a Trader Joes. Otherwise it might help to upgrade the checkers and put in some self scanning check out stations. The checkers are few and bad currently, an unattractive combination, to be sure. The lines and service are horrible. I routinely drive the extra 5-10 minutes each way to go to the Strawberry Safeway location instead. DMV lines are far more pleasant and efficient than the Camino Alto Safeway store check out process. read more

They used to have one of the best pharmacies in town. Through a series of pharmacist changes, they have got to have the worst service. Today's pharmacist is useless. The Tech is holding it together for a pharmacist that seems confused, and is moving at a snail's pace, not recognizing customers in the growing line. The Tech rocks. About bakery: so I called them to order a cake and when I picked up the cake I was disappointed. I spoke to the baker over the phone, I specified I round cake, told him the name on it (boy) and asked for a dinosaur design which of course he said no. I felt like they don't even care. Like he was brushing me off and like he wasn't listening. I should of went with my feeling because when I got there the cake was a SQUARE sheet. And it had PINK BALLOONS. He said he would fix but u could still see the pink frosting. I didn't even mention the shape and to top it off he was like u never said a name. Which shouldn't even matter he should've asked or not put anything on the cake until I got there. Anyway the cake itself tasted good. I was really sad that HE didn't listen to the customer nor care. I would say be really clear about what u want and if possible go in person and make sure u repeat what u want to them to be sure ur getting what u asked for. read more

What's up with all the low star reviews? How can you hate on Safeway? The name says it all. It's the safest way to buy groceries. There's a big parking lot with plenty of spaces. They share their parking lot with a recycling service.The place is lousy with shopping carts and shopping baskets. They recycle those white plastic bags. This is my go to spot for basic pantry items and fresh produce and even organic meats. The staff are mellow and friendly, most will know who you are after a few visits. They all greet you regardless of whether they've ever seen you before. They hire some staff that are mentally challenged that otherwise would be unemployed so they help the community and get good karma points. I figure if you shop there some of that positive karma will rub off on you and void out the 3 pints of non free trade coffee in your shopping bag. They always have donation drives for breast cancer, prostate cancer, and other assorted diseases. They absorb a couple of thousand high school kids midday every weekday who migrate from Tam High and get their lunch there (WARNING: avoid being there at all cost during this influx. If you're in there at about 11:45 AM, the public announcer will warn the staff to gird their loins and every adult shopper shudders and scampers over to the check outs to escape like rats in a sinking ship). This keeps these underdeveloped wildlings from being loosed upon our defensless community. More karma points. Oh yeah, they have a killer beer selection. Double karma points. read more

I hate to give a one-star, but after more than a thousand trips to this store over the years I think I am able to objectively say "this place is close to hitting rock bottom". Entire shelves sit empty for days on end. And the staff just shrug their shoulders. And I'm talking basics like club soda and frozen products. Lines are long, staff seem unhappy...Uggh. I went to Safeway today to buy some turkeys for a donation drive at my office building. In very big font the signs over the turkeys say $9., $11., and $9.99. I was going to spend a hundred dollars on turkeys, so I put 10 of them in my cart. When I got up to the cashier, he saw all the turkeys and said that the deal was for one turkey per customer, after spending $25. I told him what I saw on the signs. He insisted he was correct and so we said, we will buy the other turkeys full price. When he started ringing up the turkeys, each turkey was ringing up around $10, with the discounted price. So I told the cashier, see that is what the sign is saying over the turkeys as well. We called the manager. He told the Manager that the turkeys were ringing up incorrectly and he refused to ring up any more turkeys for us. The manager told him to let us buy the two turkeys that rang up and he argued saying he didn't want to because it was wrong. What an ordeal, the customer behind us said she would buy us a turkey because she was in a hurry and we were holding things up. Eventually the cashier took our money at the insistence of the manager. Afterward I went back to the turkeys and looked at the sign and saw in teeny tiny writing, one turkey per customer with a $25 purchase. Why put this in such small writing and the $9 in such big font. It is very miss leading, and then to have the cash register giving out the discounts as well, yet being told it is incorrect. Beware, don't pick up more then one turkey at Safeway, if you get our cashier, he will have a melt down!! I think Safeway should have at least donated one turkey for all the misunderstanding they created, but that didn't even happen Happy Holidays Safeway, I won't be shopping there anymore. read more

This Safeway is average. Dimly lit, and somehow primitive. I've encountered much better. My biggest complaint is that the shopping carts shock you. They literally shock you as you are holding onto the handle. I am almost certain this has something to do with the locking wheel contraption that is built into most shopping carts recently. The wheels lock if taken over a particular yellow line in the parking lots. I explained this shocking situation to the checkout girl and she reacted as if she had never heard of this problem. As I exchanged carts, she then let the "cart collector" take the shocky cart back to the grocery cart line outside. This was not a concern or priority. So it is okay for customers to spend their money at this store all the while being delivered shocks as they roam around this store??? Not cool Safeway. read more
