This store is one of my favorites. The staff is very friendly. The meat and fish counter is nice. The produce is always fresh and they are always bringing out new stock. The bbq ribs are great . Oh. I really enjoy shopping at United Market in San Anselmo as well! One of the most fun things about that market is that on each holiday, they have all kinds of gift items that you can pick up to really have a fun time with your friends and their children! They have really nice organic foods there and they have a hot deli with some really good things! The one thing that I give them the most praise for is having the very best meats you can buy anywhere. I particularly enjoy their T-bone steaks and other things like that. Everything is fresh and tasty! It's a fun market! I was inspired to write this by a quick stop for apples and vegetables after school yesterday. I shop here about once a week on weekday mornings (plus at the San Rafael location on school breaks and some weekends). The produce is farmers market quality--fresh from local farms--and usually even better priced than Safeway. The fish is the best around and i can only find certain cheeses, like Bulgarian feta, affordably here. Anyway, on this which grocery run between kindergarten and second grade pickup, I told my younger daughter that we weren't going to get treats (which was tough, given how alluring the Christmas display are--and yes, I'm hitting those next week). The store was packed because, it turned out, Thursday is "senior day." My vegetable loving daughter picked out some beautiful oyster mushrooms and a bunch of carrots in lieu of a treat. But then, at the checkout, the lovely cashier offered her a candy cane (after asking my permission) and a balloon. My daughter gleefully exclaimed, "And you said I wouldn't get a treat!" As my kindergartner beamed amidst the crowd of Thursday senior shoppers, I thought about how meaningful local businesses like United are to the community as a whole, from schools to sports teams to seniors. read more

What is with all of the pet dogs shopping with their owners? I ran in to get a few items on Saturday afternoon and there were three (3) dogs--not one a service dog--wondering through the store. Store workers did nothing other than step around them and pet them. I love dogs. I have always had one--often two or three. I take mine loads of places--where dogs are allowed. Not into grocery stores. One was extremely furry and rode in the cart. It looked elderly and not in full control of its bodily functions based on what was dripping out the bottom. Another was tiny and on a flexi-leash running amok. The third, also furry, was larger and mostly unattended. I like United--great produce, fish, meat, and I love supporting an employee owned store, but a grocery store shouldn't be doggie daycare. read more

Friendly, helpful staff. Better grade produce and dairy than other local markets. Great seafood section and a full deli counter. If I could give a zero I would. I went to the check out with my groceries and was completely ignored until I said looking at the cashier in the eye hello. He was like hello and looked away. Funny how my transaction didn't go through it said to put in a pin. But when my Russian neighbor walked in a few minutes later she had no problem using my card. I didn't give her a pin because this card doesn't have one. Why is it she was able to use my credit card but I wasn't. Call it what you like. United is our local grocer. We find we spend $50 less there every time than our trips to Whole PayCheck (FOODS/Amazon). They have great produce, (Whole Foods is way worse since Amazon took over). United hires great people from the community, and they tend to stay for years, so when you go there, it is like a small town grocery store. So it is not a big surprise that they carry local brands, and the good stuff you want, vs the corp stuff. read more

Wow. I love shopping here. Tbh, it's not a regular stop for me because the prices are dear. If they were lower I'd definitely rate 5 stars. The produce is above par! It's one of those stores that artfully display their fruit and veggies and makes me feel when I pick a carrot from the artfully displayed swirl of orange spears that I have obtained a delectable prized object! They had a lot of different varieties of mushrooms, some local. So fun! The check out cashier I spoke with was obviously so delighted to work there. Well the Yelp didn't have any photos so I figured I would do everyone a favor. I posted pictures of the menus and my sandwich. The sandwich was good. Nice flavor, warm and medium sized. The bread was not the Boar's Head that I was expecting but everything was good. I added onions and honey mustard to my Mediterranean Chicken Sandwich and substituted the provolone for Muenster cheese. The place was clean. The staff was friendly. I have no complaints. read more

Big fan of United Market for many reasons (mostly compared to Safeway): Clean store with friendly workers Never a long line at the registers (they are on top of it and will open more as needed). Well stocked deli, prepared foods and product departments Pricing comparable to or better than Safeway 75% of the time Note that because of promotions, mostly for processed, brand name food products, I will comparison shop at Safeway and buy some of those products there (I may shop at both stores on the same day for different items), but always prefer United. If you are able to go, the United Market in Central San Rafael is much larger, with an in house bakery and overall larger selections. read more

I've been a fan for more than thirty years but no more. Today an unmasked employee came up to within two feet of me to rearrange the rotisserie chickens I was looking at. I backed away and he continued with the chickens, did a helluva job but it was hard on me waiting with my walker; I'm 81. We've been twice to this market so far on our way to various destinations. It's a bit on the pricey side, but very good quality. Our purchases here have been limited, but I always notice how nice the meat and fish section looks. On our latest trip, we ordered a sandwich to go from the deli and it was delicious. read more

There are a couple things I love about both locations of United Markets that other supermarkets just don't seem to get right. First, they manage their checkout lines. If the lines start getting crowded, they call in more cashiers--and these cashiers show up very quickly. When a cashier opens up a new register, they survey the lines and take the people who arrived first, instead of just leaving things to a Hobbesian world where the oblivious and inconsiderate get checked out first. This is Marin, remember. Second, they are consistently stocked. I walk away with the groceries on my list without having to visit another store. I can't say either of these things about Sprouts, Whole Foods, Safeway, or Trader Joe's. Also, they have plenty of parking and the lots are not crazy to navigate. Having just bought a house in the neighborhood, my wife and I immediately sought out our local grocery store. Having bought a house in the neighborhood, my wife and I prayed to God it'd be someplace reasonable, and not Andronico's or Whole Paycheck. Thankfully, our new local market is United. It's a huge upgrade over the Soviet Safeway in Terra Linda we used to rely on. They've got a great selection of produce - most of it local, a good amount organic, a bulk section with plenty of wholesome grains, and a great selection of natural foods at good prices like organic milk and eggs. Their meat is good - not phenominal, good - but VERY reasonably priced. Sambos at the deli are hefty and inexpensive - for the Marin locals, think Scotty's sandwiches, but 30% cheaper. All the staff are courteous, and greet me with a smile every time. I'll still head to Costco for things I go through quickly - toilet paper (I enjoy beans, so sue me!) kitchen towel, etc., but for my everyday shopping, I'm VERY happy to shop here. read more

Now I'm moving, and I think I'll miss you most of all. You have everything I need--you have Totino's Party Pizzas *and* organic produce. You have cat food, toothpaste, and excellent cheeses. You often put Crystal Geyser on sale. More importantly, you inhabit that incredible middle ground between the depressing holocaust that is Safeway, and the depressing chi-chi snobfest that is Whole Foods or Andronico's. I tend to do 90% of my shopping at Good Earth but there are a few items I can't find anywhere but here. Rich Tea Biscuits, Digestive Biscuits, Wine Gums, Clotted Cream (usually better for me if I can't find that) Walkers... I could go on. I thought I was going to go mad waiting for my next care package from home and then I found United Markets. Aside from the Brit food I also saw a lot of Scandinavian and German stuff. There was an affluent older European immigrant crowd shopping with me and I wished I had a hidden camera to document the comical parade of outfits. Nice staff, clean store, good selection and a hell of a lot better that the generic-ness of the big chains- plus they support our local community. The Red Hill Ave location had a great flower shop attached, a small but decent selection of British goods (hob nobs!) and is open to product selections. The prices aren't the cheapest around, but hey, they're not aspiring to be Wal-Mart and I'm not looking for that in my neighborhood anyhow. The organic produce selection is larger than you big chains and the conventional produce selection is impressively priced for good quality. United Markets Delivery - DELIVERY GUYS ROCK!! Heaven. Simply put, I am in heaven. Shopping at my United Markets one day in April I noticed a sign near the entrance that stated they would soon be delivering groceries via a service, aptly named, Delivery Guys. Little did I know that my quality of life would increase to the level it has since that fortuitous moment. Seriously, if you are so busy (and who of us is not?!) that you think having someone shop for you at United Markets, checking you out and handing it over to one of the very nice delivery people from Delivery Guys to bring it to your front door would be nice, RUN to your computer to sign up!! All of this for only $15 per delivery. I 'shop' once a week for all of our groceries. I have been lucky enough to have had this service since it first went in to operation, and I cannot tell you how many hours a week it has saved me. Not only the part about getting into our car, driving to the market, collecting all of our groceries, paying for them, putting them into the car, driving home and unloading them...well, I still unload them, not from the car though, just from the bags, but that is IT! AWESOME! This has eliminated all of the hours I would spend fretting each day about when I might get to the market, if I would have time that evening after work to get to the market, etc. I now spend approximately 10-15 minutes once a week at the market getting a few extra items. Hey, it's a great excuse to stop by and see all of the wonderful people who work there with whom I have built friendships over the 29 years I have been lucky enough to shop at United Markets. :) Thanks, Delivery Guys, for making my marketing experience so easy!! read more

There is a world pandemic but United Market's employees do not stay 6 feet away, employees stock the store during shopping hours (preventing shopping for customers). Today was the last time I try to shop there (8:00 am). I will purchase everything online and when the pandemic is over I will continue to order meats, etc., from online businesses to be delivered. read more

Dealing with tough issues is never fun. However I'd like to take the time to thank the supervisor, Robert, in how he handled a difficult situation in the store and maintained a strong moral stance. My girlfriend was inappropriately touched by another customer, however the mental ailments that he had forbade him to take measure of the situation. I'm glad there are people like him willing to do anything to facilitate a safe shopping environment for everyone. While the gravity of the situation may have not been fully understood by all parties, Robert took the extra time to personally ensure that those who perpetrated were clearly communicated with but also treated with the same respect that I was when talking with him about the situation... and that a solution was found on both ends because of his calm, and mature demeanor. I live in Denver, but visit family in Marin several times a year. United Market is always the go-to. It's not particularly big, or particularly up-scale, it's just a reliable, local market with a nice selection, and a super friendly staff. What brings me back time after time is that United is the only place I can get all my favorite Marin delicacies that I can't find in Denver: bagel sticks from Marin Bagels, bay shrimp from the bay, and of course, IT'S-ITS from ice cream heaven (that's right, the holy trinity of California food.) United is the only market for miles around that carries all of this, plus an impressive selection of baked goods for when you inevitably run out of bagel sticks. read more

I like this place a lot. It's extremely neat and clean, they have a great selection of produce, and a butcher on duty provides great cuts of fresh meat. The staff is nice, and the checkout line is always extremely quick. Having a number of tellers on duty helps. Some of the items are a little pricey and rarely seem to go on sale (cereal, for example). So if you're thrifty you might need to get certain things elsewhere. Maybe someone could tell the owners of Albertsons to come over and take a few pointers? read more

Before moving to Marin, I had never heard of United Markets. The one in San Anselmo is in an otherwise unremarkable, white building with few windows. The produce is locally sourced and the organics selection is always more competitively priced than at neighboring grocery stores. The market is otherwise in an older building and it's difficult to tell how well maintained and clean the store is given the store's naturally aged and yellowed plastic shelving set against original vinyl flooring. It's a fine place to pick up groceries for anyone focused on staying within a budget without sacrificing access to fresh produce. There is also a United market in San Rafael. read more

I've only been around the north bay for a couple years and have been trying to find a great market as an alternative to the big chain. Got lost and stumbled across this place and decided to try it out. Of course, I was trying to find the San Rafael location I'd driven past the week before. Definitely really liked this place. The bread is fantastic! Loaves that are still warm when you buy them-awesome! Bagels-awesome! Local products-awesome! Prices are a bit higher than at other places, which is suspected, a bit of a bummer, but not a deal breaker for somethings. Also, the location is great, it's a bit hard to navigate because its small, more of a basket shopping place than cart, produce section is a free for all traffic jam at times. read more
