Typically come to this Safeway because it's the closest to me and usually not the busy. Right off of Middlefield & Colorado next to the Round table and 7-11. Decent size parking lot with flower section, Deli area and there's a pharmacy as well. The front of the location seems smaller and gets congested easily when you're entering the store. This isn't a 24-7 location but it does stay open until 2am even though I've come after midnight before and it has been closed. read more

I had to share this experience because it truly restored my faith in people. A few days ago, I accidentally left my purse at Safeway. It had everything inside, my ID, credit cards, and even my passport card. After searching everywhere with no luck, I honestly thought it was gone for good and started thinking about all the time and stress it would take to replace everything. Then today, I received a call from Jenny at Safeway customer service. She had found my purse. Not only that, she took the extra step to look through it, found my business card, carefully matched the name and photo, and made the effort to track me down and call me. She even told me she was hoping I would pick up the phone. I almost didn't, I thought it might be a random call, and I'm so glad I did. When I came in, everything was still there. Nothing missing. Completely intact. It turns out my purse had been sitting there for days, and Jenny was the one who took the initiative to finally check and make sure it got back to the right person. That level of care, honesty, and responsibility is rare. I also met the manager, Courtney, who was incredibly kind and appreciative. She mentioned how often feedback tends to be negative, which made me feel even more strongly about sharing this. As someone in a service business, I know how much positive recognition matters, and how often it goes unsaid. Jenny, thank you for going above and beyond. Courtney, thank you for leading a team that clearly cares. This saved me an incredible amount of stress and meant more than I can express. Hours say open until 2am but store doors are locked at 12am, with staff stocking inside. Also employees watch people of color seemed racist and its Safeway... not Whole Foods or Andronico's might get better service at the higher priced stores. Once again, Safeway on Middlefield Avenue in Palo Alto proves to be the worst supermarket around. We only shopped here today because we got our booster shot. We were overcharged even though I clipped the coupon to my account and signed out under my cell number which is my account. Theoretically this should not be rocket science. Same old story computer is not getting the pricing right and people get overcharged. If you shop here I advise you to look at your receipt carefully. read more

There was a very racist Asian female cashier on 1/2/26 in the afternoon. She was maybe in her early 20s. When I stood in line she was talking to an older Caucasian male. She was being very friendly and was wishing him a happy new year and giving him great customer service. As soon as I got there I said hello and she turned cold, had a frown on her stupid face and said NOTHING!! Didn't acknowledge me or even act like I existed. I thought maybe she didn't hear me, so after she finished ringing me up, I said thank you very much! And she still said NOTHING! Totally ignored me and didn't even look at me. If I wasn't in a rush I would speak to the manager! This is unacceptable behavior!!! I hope she gets worse treatment when she goes anywhere. Simply put, not good. I have been coming here for years. Even though they finally upgraded the place the customer service is horrible and management worse. The employees there do not have a friendly approach and are just non professional. Some of the food is at the expire date and inventory is way down, not to mention over priced. I always go to the middle field Safeway since it is close by. But no matter how long the line is ( only 1 checker working and no bagger) no one calls for another checker to come. There are always tons of people stocking shelf or doing various other jobs , but never is another person called open another line. Not sure but feels like there was a change in management and they have obviously put a priority on store appearance over customers. I live in walking distance to this location, which should be nice. But it isn't. I've lived here for over a decade and noticed a lot of changes here. In the last few months this location has taken a serious turn for the worse. And it needs to be called out. From a normal customer perspective: the shelf's are often sloppily stocked, if stocked at all, and the price tags on the shelf often do not correspond to the item above. So you think you found a good deal, but in reality they just over stocked the shelves with a different item to make it look fuller at the expense of accuracy. That is when the shelves look stocked, as you can see in my photos, god forbid you want a specific kind of dairy product. Their milk box ALWAYS looks like that photo. Doesn't matter the day or time of day. Their produce department has taken a nosedive lately too(see photos). The yellow AND red onions look like they've been on the shelf all week. Rather than trying to sell that to customers, it should really have been taken off the shelves. But no, management sees nothing wrong with items like this being offered for sale. And I saw the manager or assistant manager walk through the area no less than 3 times while shopping today. Another note on produce is they have terrible labels, the shelves are empty and again, labels don't match the product. If there are labels to be found. Many times there are none at all. From a delivery perspective: if you're picking up orders from here, get ready to offer LOTS of substitutions to your customers. They don't have a firm grip on their inventory at all and many things your customer wants, will simply not be there. read more

This is twice that this has happened and with the same clerk. I was overcharged both times. Both times, I returned within half an hour. Both times, Carol . This time I was charged for two cans of coffee. Also I use points to get free items, and my bag of sig select 7ct avocados did not ring up as free. Carol said to come back the next day like she did last time. She said that there was no mgr available to help. She didn't even try to listen to the explanation. So yet again I have to return today. The last time the mgr that helped me said that they have to have a mgr staffed. Mixed messages. Obviously the problem never got resolved because it happened again with the same person. This morning I decided to go to the Safeway deli to get sandwich meals for my coworker and I. Upon arrival I instantly noticed the same lady/deli worker from a previous visit and said hello. I didn't catch her name but she looks like she's the main one back there. She sounds like she's got an islander accent. While I was waiting my turn I noticed that her nose was runny, and when she got back from grabbing bread from the bread isle there was no swap of food prep gloves. She left the deli to go grab bread because they were completely out of bread variety and the person in front of me wanted wheat. This was the first red flag. Second red flag was when she was prepping the guys sandwich in front of me there was a lot of things "they didn't have". Finally it was my turn and instantly she said there wasn't any meat, sauce or peppers for the meal deal that was advertised. At this point I was well into my lunch break and I had to settle for whatever. When she was preparing my coworker and I's sandwiches I couldn't help but notice how old the veggies were. Seemed like they were there from the day before at least. I'm not exaggerating. After I got my food, there was a clear disgusting smell coming from the sandwich and I knew it was the tomatoes and onions. Sure enough they were bad. No way they were prepped that day. I suspect they had been sitting from at least the day before. This is the second bad experience I had at this deli and the first time another cashier tried to step in speak up for me but I kept denying any wrong doing from the deli worker to not be rude or disrespectful to anyone. Clearly, the other Safeway worker that was trying to call the deli worker out on my behalf must know the deli being disgusting is common. Did I mention the whole time this ladies nose was running and she kept having to suck in her snot? This was a terrible experience because I had to throw my Frankenstein Sandwich out and remained hungry for the rest of my shift. The midtown Safeway....... its a rough one for sure. It super small, the parking lot is really small, it seems to be understaffed, and if your looking for anything beyond basics you may be out of luck. The meat selection also quite limited. We really view this particular Safeway as a 11 PM need something for the morning emergency stop. The staff is usually friendly but they clearly seem to be understaffed and that impacts the whole customer service experience. The only exception here is one of the clerks, Yolanda. Yolanda always has a smile on her face, is always friendly, and despite my infrequent visits, remembers me by name. read more

First time ever I tried the deli at Safeway, the one on Middlefield in Palo Alto. I ordered and ate a hot ham and cheese sandwich on sliced sourdough bread with mayonnaise. It was fantastic. The best sandwich I have eaten in ages. Wow. What a pleasant surprise. I also ordered a small bag of chips and a bottle of water. The total price was modest, to say the least. One of the two guys got really close to me and told me to leave the store because they don't need customers like this. I proceeded to go about my shopping by for some reason they decided to bring the manager to try to force me out the store. The manager got really close and I had to ask her twice to keep the 6 feet distance from me. I told her what happen and told her to go and check the store security recording and that's when one of the two guys got really aggressive and defensive. I just went out and started crying ... I really needed the milk and it was the only thing I brought I was inside in the store t for around 5 minutes only it did not seem fair to me To the cashier He would embarrass me that way thanks to the cashier who ignored him and only he said pass you card.... The service wasn't helpful, the deli cut I requested wasn't correct, the order wasn't correct, and to make matters worse today my request was met with disdain before Elizabeth came to the rescue. I understand these are difficult times, so I always believe I. Kindness and respect . I can see why this store is rated so low. I went last night at about 10:15 pm. Shopped around and found most items I was looking for. This store is on the smaller side for a Safeway, I only came here because it was a 24 hour store. I was standing in line to checkout at somewhere around 11 and began to rethink my decision to shop here. They had one checkstand open and the line in front of me was about 6 and behind me another good 7 people. I felt bad for the couple behind me as they had 3 items. I had about a half of a cart full. So I let them in front of me. I'm confused as to why they only had one checkstand open with about 15 or so people waiting to check out. Anyway the checker was a bit gruff, didn't even acknowledge me or ask if I needed bags. I did but still at least say hi, boo, something. He loaded the bags and shoved them to the end of the counter so I could put them in the cart. I always separate my groceries per boxed and frozen/refrigerated stuff. So why when I went to put the bags in my car, I decided to look through the bags and everything was just willy nilly. That is a huge pet peeve for me. So I stood in the parking lot and rearranged the groceries before going home. I'm only anal about this because I wanted to put the refrigerated items away first and I don't like to find surprises later. Like melting frozen food in with staples. read more

Driving home from getting some chores done in Palo Alto and stopped in this Safeway to pick up a couple items I had forgotten to get when I grocery shopped the day before. This Safeway is by far the smallest Safeway store I have ever been in. Tiniest parking lot, and inside it was only slightly larger than a convenience store. Seriously they have very, very low variety of products here. Very few selections, and just sort of disorganized and hard to figure out. Since they did not carry the brand of cat food my kitties eat, I decided to just leave and go to my own neighborhood Safeway, so I ended up getting nothing here. I doubt I would ever come back now that I know what it's like. As a side-note, I found it quite bizarre that one of their checkers was wearing one of those surgical masks....was he the sick one?.....or was he deathly worried of catching the bird-flu from a customer?.....so weird! read more

Employees (with a few exceptions) are grumpy. Early on in the pandemic they were very slow to adopt safety measures among employees. Many times they are out of what I need. The store is small so inventory is more limited - not their fault. But it isn't always efficient to try shop there for this reason as well. Worst of all they are using anticoagulant rodenticides around the building - that cause agonizing deaths not only to rodents but also to all wild and domestic critters who catch and eat them. Birds, pet cats - etc. Do not support this store and these practices. read more

Had an apt scheduled online thru the Albertsons app. = 6 months after the last shot (according to CDC), but Cynthia the "Pharmacy Tech something" - had difficulty adding the month June + 6 to get to December and we got canceled / turned around, only to return and point that out. The Safeway at this location in Midtown Palo Alto used to be known as the "bad" Safeway amongst my friends, especially compared to the nearby Safeways in both Mountain View and Menlo Park. But after a remodel and slight expansion a few months ago, it has improved and I'm glad to see Safeway respond to competition from Whole Foods and other supermarkets. Perhaps the nicest neighborhood perk was when they threw a Grand Reopening for their nearby customers. Not only did they provide 10% in store coupons to be used throughout the month, they also mimicked a bit of Costco/Whole Foods by having free food samples throughout the store. Goodies included flank steak, juice samples, pasta, and sandwiches. I skipped a few dinners due to their generosity. Now that the promotional period has passed, we're left with a Safeway that has 1) a remodeled and expanded sandwich station 2) a larger seafood section, including more non-frozen options (see pic) and 3) a new organic food section. The tiny parking lot can still get crowded, but the nearby location and the great hours (they seem to be always open...) will keep me coming back. BTW they have all new ergonomic shopping carts and encourage the use of reusable cloth shopping bags. After some prodding from gf (i collect plastic bags like a fiend), I'm happy to report that I used my own cloth bags for the first time here and they worked really well. The cloth bags I brought were: 1) a hideous bright green and orange bag labeled prominently with the the narcotic known on the streets as "China White" 2) a blue bag adorned with a large logo of my last grad school 3) a pink and white swag bag from the 151 Boutique Elite event As I left, I told the bag boy to stuff as much as he could into the first two bags. As much as I love Elite swag, pink isn't really my color. Thus with two overstuffed bags, I happily left Safeway as a fashion-blind, but educated, fan of narcotic drugs. read more

Today at 1:30 I tried purchasing a box with a bottle of wine and chocolates inside for my boyfriend's birthday coming up. The tag that said it was 25% off had a bar code on the side so I tried to scan that at the self register. The box was too big and it couldn't read the tag so I took off the tag from the box and tried to scan, but it also wasn't working. I asked an older lady with glasses and curly hair for help and she was extremely rude and assumed I grabbed the tag from a random product, "Did you just grab this tag from some shelf?" I explain that it's part of the box and I clearly removed it since the sticker removed some of the paper on the box, but she didn't believe me and told me to go to someone else and walked away with my tag. I asked if I can have it back to check out and she firmly and rudely told me to go to someone else and put it away at a register. Leo who helped me was always nice to me everytime I come to Safeway, so I was thankful for his help. When the other barcode on the box wasn't working either, he asked her for the tag and she walked over and told him, "I don't think the tag is part of this product." Oh, so she think I'm lying now? She stated, "It says, 'wine and sweet treat'." I replied to her, "Right. The chocolate is the sweet treat and the wine is right there." Keep in mind the box is completely see through... I'm so upset with her customer service and how rude she was when I was simply asking for help. Management needs to do something about her attitude towards customers. This is more like an express Safeway. It's small most likely due to Palo Alto's ridiculous price per square feet real estate prices so be thankful the town is blessed with a grocery store affordable for middle class Americans like myself and not overrun by fancy gourmet stores or Whole Foods takeovers. This store, although be it small and cramped, is stocked with your daily essentials. The selection may be small so don't come here expecting a wide variety of gourmet options like a fully loaded premium Safeway with larger schematics and set sizes. They really should do a better job at organizing the shelves and hiring more staff because there's almost always a line at the register. Overall, in summation...this Safeway gets the job done if you want to get in and out with daily essentials but also have time to navigate the narrow aisles without bumping into fellow shoppers. Must also allocate an additional 7+ minutes for standing patiently in the line queue. read more
